Abstract
BACKGROUND Ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a noninvasive diagnostic method for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and a predictor of cardiovascular events. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to evaluate the association between individual or combined essential metals and ABI, as well as assess the collective impact of essential metals when coupled with healthy lifestyle on ABI. METHODS A total of 2865 participants were recruited in Wuhan Tongji Hospital between August 2018 and March 2019. Concentrations of essential metals in urine were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. RESULTS The results of general linear regression models demonstrated that after adjusting for confounding factors, there was a positive association between ABI increase and per unit increase of log 10-transformed, creatinine-corrected urinary Cr (β (95 % CI): 0.010 (0.004, 0.016), PFDR = 0.007), Fe (β (95 % CI): 0.010 (0.003, 0.017), PFDR = 0.018), and Co (β (95 % CI): 0.013 (0.005, 0.021), PFDR = 0.007). The WQS regression revealed a positive relationship between the mixture of essential metals and ABI (β (95 % CI): 0.006 (0.003, 0.010), P < 0.001), with Cr and Co contributing most to the relationship (weighted 45.48 % and 40.14 %, respectively). Compared to individuals with unfavorable lifestyle and the lowest quartile of Cr, Fe and Co, those with favorable lifestyle and the highest quartile of Cr, Fe and Co exhibited the most increase in ABI (β (95 % CI): 0.030 (0.017, 0.044) for Cr, β (95 % CI): 0.027 (0.013, 0.040) for Fe, and β (95 % CI): 0.030 (0.016, 0.044) for Co). CONCLUSION In summary, our study indicates that adequate essential metal intake together with healthy lifestyle behaviors perform crucial roles in PAD protection.

Abstract
Background The assessment of heavy metals' effects on human health is frequently limited to investigating one metal or a group of related metals. The effect of heavy metals mixture on heart attack is unknown. Methods This study applied the Bayesian kernel machine regression model (BKMR) to the 2011-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data to investigate the association between heavy metal mixture exposure with heart attack. 2972 participants over the age of 20 were included in the study. Results Results indicate that heart attack patients have higher levels of cadmium and lead in the blood and cadmium, cobalt, and tin in the urine, while having lower levels of mercury, manganese, and selenium in the blood and manganese, barium, tungsten, and strontium in the urine. The estimated risk of heart attack showed a negative association of 0.0030 units when all the metals were at their 25th percentile compared to their 50th percentile and a positive association of 0.0285 units when all the metals were at their 75th percentile compared to their 50th percentile. The results suggest that heavy metal exposure, especially cadmium and lead, may increase the risk of heart attacks. Conclusions This study suggests a possible association between heavy metal mixture exposure and heart attack and, additionally, demonstrates how the BKMR model can be used to investigate new combinations of exposures in future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The impact of trace elements and heavy metals on human health has attracted widespread attention. However, the correlation between urinary chromium concentrations and blood pressure remains unclear and inadequately reported, and the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between urinary chromium concentrations and blood pressure in adults in the United States (US). METHODS We utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018 for this study. Multivariate logistic regression and multivariate linear regression were used to explore the association of urinary chromium concentrations with hypertension and blood pressure. Additionally, we also performed subgroup analysis and restricted cubic splines (RCS). RESULTS A total of 2958 participants were enrolled in this study. The overall mean systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were 123.98 ± 0.60, 72.66 ± 0.57 mmHg, respectively. The prevalence of hypertension was found in 41.31% of the whole participants. In the fully adjusted model, we did not observe a correlation between urinary chromium concentrations and the risk of hypertension and systolic blood pressure. However, we found a negative association between urinary chromium concentrations and diastolic blood pressure. In subgroup analysis, we observed a positive association between urinary chromium and the risk of hypertension among participants older than 60 years of age and those who were Non-Hispanic Black. The interaction term highlighted the influence of age and race on this positive association. We also found a negative association of urinary chromium with diastolic blood pressure in male, participants who were current smokers, overweight, and other races, as well as those without alcohol use and anti-hypertensive drug use. However, the interaction term only revealed the influence of alcohol consumption on the negative association. CONCLUSION Our study suggested that urinary chromium concentrations may show a negative association with diastolic blood pressure and this association was significantly dependent on alcohol consumption. Besides, a positive association between urinary chromium and the risk of hypertension was also found among participants older than 60 years of age and those who were Non-Hispanic Black.

Abstract
The evidence about the association of the essential trace element (ETE) mixture with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) amongst older adults is limited. This study aims to evaluate the associations of single ETEs and the ETE mixture with the 10-year ASCVD risks and its predicting factors in Chinese community-dwelling older adults. A total of 607 community-dwelling older adults were included in this study. Blood levels of vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), and selenium (Se) were assessed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The predicted 10-year ASCVD risk was calculated using the Prediction for ASCVD Risk in China (China-PAR) equations. Traditional linear regressions and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to assess the associations of single ETEs and the ETE mixture with the 10-year ASCVD risks and its predicting factors such as systolic blood pressure (SBP), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), diabetes, and waist circumference (WC). In linear regression models, blood Cr levels were negatively associated with the 10-year ASCVD risks after adjustment for covariates (β = - 0.07, 95% CI = - 0.11 ~ - 0.03); The 3th quartile (Q3) of Se levels was also associated with a lower 10-year ASCVD risks when compared with the lowest quartile (Q1) of Se levels (βQ3 vs. Q1: - 0.12, 95% CI = - 0.22 ~ - 0.02). In BKMR models, the negative associations of Cr and Se with the 10-year ASCVD risks were observed. Higher blood levels of ETE mixture were associated with decreased 10-year ASCVD risks in a dose-response pattern, with Cr having the highest value of the posterior inclusion probability (PIP) within the mixture. Furthermore, a positive association between Cr and HDL-C and a negative association between Se and SBP were found in both linear regression and BKMR models. Cr and Se were negatively associated with the 10-year ASCVD risks, individually and as a mixture. ETE mixture showed a linear dose-response association with decreased 10-year ASCVD risks, with Cr being the most important component within the mixture. The negative association of the ETE mixture with the 10-year ASCVD risks may be attributed to Cr and Se, mainly mediated by HDL-C and SBP, respectively. Further cohort studies are needed to clarify this association.

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to explore possible connections between manganese exposure and the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in older US adults. The relationship between serum manganese levels and CVD was explored in 2427 people aged 60 years and over using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2011-2018). Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to investigate associations between CVD risk factors and serum manganese concentration. The relationship between manganese levels and the prevalence of CVD was probed using generalized linear models and restricted cubic spline curves. Stratified subgroup analysis was subsequently constructed to rule out spurious interactions between variables and manganese. Compared with the lowest quartile, the modified odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CVD prevalence across the manganese quartiles were 0.71 (OR: 0.51; CI: 1.00), 0.70 (0.50, 0.99), and 0.49 (0.34, 0.72). In the full adjusted model, a prominent negative relationship was observed between serum manganese concentration and CVD. A restricted cubic spline curve was used to show a nonlinear negative relationship between manganese concentration and CVD. In summary, manganese levels are negatively correlated with the risk of CVD in a nation-wide study of older US adults.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have been associated with environmental pollutants. The scope of this study is to assess any potential relation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), their hydroxylated derivatives, and trace elements with heart failure via their direct determination in human serum of Greek citizens residing in different areas. Therefore, we analyzed 131 samples including cases (heart failure patients) and controls (healthy donors), and the respective demographic data were collected. Significantly higher concentrations (p < 0.05) were observed in cases' serum regarding most of the examined PAHs and their derivatives with phenanthrene, fluorene, and fluoranthene being the most abundant (median of >50 μg L-1). Among the examined trace elements, As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, and Pb were measured at statistically higher concentrations (p < 0.05) in cases' samples, with only Cr being significantly higher in controls. The potential impact of environmental factors such as smoking and area of residence has been evaluated. Specific PAHs and trace elements could be possibly related with heart failure development. Atmospheric degradation and smoking habit appeared to have a significant impact on the analytes' serum concentrations. PCA-logistic regression analysis could possibly reveal common mechanisms among the analytes enhancing the hypothesis that they may pose a significant risk for CVD development.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) constitute the first cause of death among the population of developing and developed countries. Atherosclerosis, which is a disorder with multifactorial etiopathogenesis, underlies most CVDs. The available literature includes ample research studies on the influence of classic cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. However, environmental exposure to heavy metals, among other substances, is still an unappreciated risk factor of CVDs. This study aimed to assess the concentration of some heavy metals (copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), and iron (Fe)) in the blood serum of postmyocardial infarction (post-MI) patients and patients free from myocardial infarction (MI) as well as estimate the relationship between the occurrence of MI and increased concentration of heavy metals. The concentration of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, Co, and Fe) was assessed using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique in a group of 146 respondents divided into two groups: post-MI group (study group (SG), n = 74) and group without cardiovascular event (CVE) having a low CV risk (control group (CG), n = 72). The concentration of the analyzed heavy metals was higher in SG. All the heavy metals showed a significant diagnostic value (p < 0.001). The highest value of area under the curve (AUC) was observed for manganese (Mn) (0.955; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.922–0.988), while the lowest value was found for zinc (Zn) (0.691; 95% CI = 0.599–0.782). In one-dimensional models, high concentrations of each of the analyzed heavy metals significantly increased the chances of having MI from 7-fold (Cu) to 128-fold (Mn). All the models containing a particular metal showed a significant and high discrimination value for MI occurrence (AUC 0.72–0.92). Higher concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mn, Co, and Fe were found to considerably increase the chances of having MI. Considering the increasingly higher environmental exposure to heavy metals in recent times, their concentrations can be distinguished as a potential risk factor of CVDs.

Abstract
Published systematic reviews concluded that there is moderate to strong evidence to infer a potential role of lead and cadmium, widespread environmental metals, as cardiovascular risk factors. For other non-essential metals, the evidence has not been appraised systematically. Our objective was to systematically review epidemiologic studies on the association between cardiovascular disease in adults and the environmental metals antimony, barium, chromium, nickel, tungsten, uranium, and vanadium. We identified a total of 4 articles on antimony, 1 on barium, 5 on chromium, 1 on nickel, 4 on tungsten, 1 on uranium, and 0 on vanadium. We concluded that the current evidence is not sufficient to inform on the cardiovascular role of these metals because of the small number of studies. Few experimental studies have also evaluated the role of these metals in cardiovascular outcomes. Additional epidemiologic and experimental studies, including prospective cohort studies, are needed to understand the role of metals, including exposure to metal mixtures, in cardiovascular disease development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Zinc is one of the most important microelements in the body and zinc homeostasis plays a critical role in maintaining cellular structure and function. Zinc dyshomeostasis can lead to many diseases, such as cardiovascular disease. Our aim was to investigate whether there is a relationship between zinc and cardiac markers, and the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) by zinc quartiles. METHODS We enrolled a total of 529 patients and measured their serum zinc levels and cardiac markers. We performed further studies after dividing subjects into four groups according to their concentrations of zinc by quartile to clarify the relationship between zinc levels and risk of increased acute myocardial infarction prevalence rate. RESULTS We observed that there was a significant inverse linear relationship between zinc and Lg(creatine kinase) (p=0.011), Lg(creatine kinase-MB) (p=0.002) and Lg(cardiac troponin T) (p=0.045). In addition, the acute myocardial infarction prevalence rates were 28.8%, 24.8%, 20.5%, and 18.2% by patients with zinc quartiles, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio between the lowest and highest zinc quartile groups was 1.92 (1.019-3.604) (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The present study revealed a relationship between serum zinc levels in that zinc levels were significantly inversely correlated with serum creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase-MB (CKMB) and cardiac troponin T (cTnT) levels. Furthermore, we found that the prevalence rate of acute myocardial infarction decreased with increasing zinc quartiles.

Abstract
Daunorubicin (DNR) is a widely used antitumor drug, but its application is limited because of its cardiotoxic side effects. The present study was designed to investigate the interaction between DNR and cardiac myosin (CM) in the presence of chromium(III) (Cr(3+)) and manganese(II) (Mn(2+)) using fluorescence spectrometry under simulative physiological conditions with the aim of exploring the influence of metal ion on DNR-CM complex and finding out an aggressive approach to abrogate of DNR-induced cardiotoxicity. In detail, the quenching and binding constant of ternary system, including metal ion, DNR, and CM, were measured and compared with the DNR-CM. The data from in vitro experiments indicate that the presence of Cr(3+) or Mn(2+) distinctly decreased the binding force between DNR and CM, and alleviated the cardiac toxicity caused by DNR. In addition, the variations in mice body weight and myocardial enzyme level were examined by in vivo experiments. Animals receiving Cr(3+) or Mn(2+) supplementation of DNR showed preservation of the normal pattern of the heart, especially 2.0 mg Cr(3+)/kg body wt or 50.0 mg Mn(2+)/kg body wt exhibited an obviously protective effect accompanied with body weight raise when compared with the mice treated with DNR alone, decreased the ratio of heart to body weight (BW) and the ratio of left ventricular mass to BW to the normal levels, and inhibited the leak of myocardial enzyme caused by DNR. As a result, this study suggests that pretreatment of lower dose of Cr(3+) (2 mg/kg wt) and moderate dose of Mn(2+) (50 mg/kg wt) might be useful and play an important role in ameliorating the cardiotoxicity of DNR treatment in cancer patients.
