Abstract
In this study, the relationships between periodontitis and total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), and selenium levels were investigated. A total of 122 participants, including 61 periodontitis patients and 61 periodontally healthy individuals, were included. Serum TOS, TAS, and selenium levels were measured, and the biochemical and clinical parameters were compared. The relationship between selenium levels and periodontitis was assessed through univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression. Compared with the healthy group, the periodontitis group had significantly higher TOS and significantly lower TAS and selenium levels (p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis also revealed a significant correlation between selenium levels and periodontitis (p < 0.001). Our study demonstrated that periodontitis was related to TOS, TAS, and selenium levels. The present study investigated the relationships of periodontitis with TOS, TAS, and selenium levels. Selenium levels could serve as an important biomarker for periodontal disease, as they are strongly correlated with the TOS value, the TAS value, and clinical parameters. Furthermore, lower selenium levels were observed in periodontitis patients than in healthy individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have indicated a potential relationship between iron status and oral health outcomes, specifically periodontitis and dental caries. This study employed Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the causal effects of iron status on these oral health conditions. The focus of this study was on key iron biomarkers, namely serum iron, ferritin, transferrin saturation (TSAT), and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC). METHODS This two-sample MR analysis employed genome-wide association study (GWAS) data. The instrumental variables (IVs) were selected based on their genome-wide significance and independence from confounders. The statistical analyses employed the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method, MR-Egger regression, weighted median, and weighted mode. Additionally, sensitivity analyses were conducted to verify the reliability of the causal association results. RESULTS The MR analysis indicated a suggestive negative causal relationship between TIBC and periodontitis, with an odds ratios of 0.875 and a 95% CI of 0.766-0.998, with a P-value of .047. No significant other associations were found. The results of sensitivity analyses demonstrated the robustness of these findings. CONCLUSION This MR study suggested a potential negative association between TIBC and periodontitis, highlighting the importance of considering iron status in the clinical management of chronic periodontitis. However, more standardized, multi-population studies are needed to confirm this causality.

Abstract
AIM Recent findings suggest that mitigating ferroptosis could serve as an effective strategy for treating inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the role that the enhancer of zeste homologue 2 (EZH2) mediated the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (stat3) methylation plays in the modulation of ferroptosis in pulpitis. The study results offer potential advancements in the therapeutic approaches for pulpitis and provide new insights and strategies for managing this condition. METHODOLOGY Bioinformatics analysis combined with methylation capture sequencing of EZH2fl/flCre+/- pulp tissue was used to explore the association between pulpitis and ferroptosis. In this study, we used an EZH2 knockout model prepared through lentiviral transduction and an LPS-induced inflammatory model of endometrial mesenchymal stromal cells to confirm the role that the EZH2/STAT3 axis plays in ferroptosis. RESULTS Bioinformatics analysis identified a link between pulpitis and DNA methylation. Methylation sequencing further revealed the association of methylation with ferroptosis and the regulation of STAT3 methylation by EZH2. In vitro, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation induced ferroptosis, whereas EZH2 disruption suppressed STAT3 expression but increased Glutathione Peroxidase 4 (GPX4) expression, leading to the escalation of oxidative stress and exacerbation of ferroptosis. This illustrates the complex interactions between methylation, ferroptosis and oral inflammation, highlighting potential therapeutic targets. CONCLUSIONS Overall, pulpitis plays a crucial role in EZH2-mediated STAT3 methylation and activates ferroptosis by regulating GPX4 expression. This study provides new insights and strategies for treatment and advances our understanding of the pathogenesis of pulpitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic prostatitis (CP) is one of the general diseases in urological practice, with category III prostatitis being particularly prevalent. The trace metal abnormalities might be a primary cause of prostatitis, however, their specific roles in category III prostatitis remain largely unexplored. METHOD In total, 42 expressed prostatic secretion (EPS) samples from IIIa prostatitis patients, 42 from IIIb prostatitis patients, and 45 from controls were collected, along with 42 serum samples from IIIa prostatitis patients, 45 from IIIb prostatitis patients, and 50 from controls for analysis in this study. To investigate the diagnostic potential of trace metals in category III prostatitis, we analyzed the concentration of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) in EPS and serum of patients with category III prostatitis and healthy controls using a flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS). RESULTS The Results showed that the concentrations of Zn, Ca and Mg in both serum and EPS samples of all subjects with category III prostatitis were significantly different compared to controls (all P < 0.05), while Cu levels were significantly altered in all EPS samples (P < 0.000). In the category of IIIa prostatitis group, the levels of Zn, Ca, Mg in EPS, as well as Ca in serum were significantly reduced (all P < 0.000), whereas the serum Zn level was markedly elevated (P < 0.000). In the category IIIb prostatitis group, the EPS levels of Zn, Ca, Mg were decreased significantly (all P < 0.05), and the levels of serum Ca, Mg were markedly decreased (all P < 0.000), however, the EPS Cu level increased significantly (P < 0.05). Moreover, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that the levels of Mg and Zn/Mg in EPS had better diagnostic value for category IIIa prostatitis (Area Under the ROC Curve(AUC) = 0.796, 0.791, respectively, all P < 0.0001); while Cu and Cu/Ca levels exhibited better diagnostic value for category IIIb prostatitis (AUC = 0.880, 0.901, respectively, all P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Summarily, there are significant abnormalities in the concentrations of Cu, Mg, Ca, and Zn in EPS and serum samples of patients with category III prostatitis. The levels of Mg, Cu, Zn/Mg, Cu/Ca in EPS may serve as potential diagnostic markers for category III prostatitis.

Abstract
AIM Tobacco smoke exposure, zinc intake, and periodontitis are closely related. This study intended to assess the relationship between tobacco smoke exposure and zinc intake and its effect on periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study included 9364 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) of USA. A weighted multivariate logistic regression model was used to investigate the independent relationship and interaction effect among tobacco smoke exposure, zinc intake, and periodontitis. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated. The additive interaction was evaluated using relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion of interaction (AP), and synergy index (SI). RESULTS In all, 56.57% participants had periodontitis. Compared with participants without tobacco smoke exposure, those with tobacco smoke exposure had increased odds of having periodontitis (OR, 1.96; 95% CI, 1.67-2.31). Similarly, patients with adequate zinc intake were found to have decreased odds of having periodontitis than those with inadequate zinc intake (OR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.76-0.98). Importantly, there was antagonistic interaction effect between zinc intake and tobacco smoke exposure on periodontitis (RERI: OR, -0.432; 95% CI, -0.829 to -0.034; AP: OR, -0.242; 95% CI, -0.470 to -0.014; SI: OR, 0.645; 95% CI, 0.446 to 0.932). CONCLUSIONS Tobacco smoke exposure and zinc intake were independently correlated with periodontitis risk. Decreasing tobacco smoke exposure and optimizing dietary zinc intake appear to be important measures that could be taken to control periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ferritin is an iron storage protein essential for iron homeostasis regulation and an indicator of iron stores. It is an acute phase reactant and is elevated in inflammation and chronic infection. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with periodontopathogens possessing haemolytic activity which leads to increased local iron concentration and iron disorder. Inflammation and excess systemic iron are mediating risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus. AIM To evaluate and compare the salivary ferritin levels in subjects with chronic periodontitis with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODOLOGY Unstimulated saliva sample was collected by standardized spitting technique from 45 individuals, aged between 30 and 65 years divided into three groups. Group I-Healthy individuals, Group II-Subjects with chronic periodontitis with type 2 diabetes mellitus, Group III-Subjects with chronic periodontitis without type 2 diabetes mellitus. The salivary ferritin levels are analysed using latex-enhanced turbidimetric assay in an autoanalyzer. RESULTS The salivary ferritin level was elevated in chronic periodontitis with type 2 diabetes mellitus (Group II) and in chronic periodontitis without type 2 diabetes mellitus (Group III).

Abstract
Poor oral health conditions in adults are associated with chronic pain. A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the link between tooth loss and chronic pain. The study involved 8,662 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Tooth count was categorized into 4 groups, and chronic pain was defined as persistent pain lasting over 3 months despite treatment. Location of the chronic pain, demographics, comorbidities, lifestyle determinants, and dietary intake were retrieved. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to explore cross-sectional associations between tooth count and chronic pain. Compared to participants with more than 20 teeth, those with severe tooth loss presented greater odds of chronic pain (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.111, 95% confidence intervals (CI) = 1.213-3.676 for patients with 1-8 teeth). Edentulous participants presented with significantly higher odds of chronic pain in the lower extremities (78.4%) and buttocks (49.5%). In the multivariate model, apart from rheumatic arthritis (aOR = 4.004, 95% CI = 2.766-5.798), variables of higher chronic pain included smoking (aOR = 1.518, 95% CI = 1.228-1.878), and hypertension (aOR = 1.463, 95% CI = 1.013-2.112). On the contrary, being Mexican American (aOR = .603, 95% CI = .414-.880) was associated with lower odds of chronic pain. The findings suggested a significant link between chronic pain and tooth loss, independent of ethnicity, lifestyle determinants, and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis. PERSPECTIVE: A U.S. nationwide study examined tooth loss and chronic pain. Those with severe tooth loss had increased odds of chronic pain. Edentulous individuals presented higher odds of pain in lower extremities and buttocks. This study highlighted the link between tooth loss and chronic pain, independent of comorbidities and lifestyle factors.

Abstract
AIMS To systematically investigate the association between individual and combined metal exposure and periodontitis. METHODS Data encompassing complete periodontal examinations and metal detection in blood and urine samples were procured from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014. Three statistical methods, namely weighted logistic regression, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, were used to evaluate the independent and combined associations between metals and periodontitis. RESULTS Elevated concentrations of blood cadmium (odds ratio [OR]: 1.73, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.15-2.61) and blood lead (OR: 1.17, 95 %CI: 1.02-1.34) exhibited a positive association with periodontitis, even after adjusting for potential confounding factors. The BKMR and WQS regression suggested that the co-exposure of metals was also positively associated with periodontitis. Moreover, estradiol and albumin were identified as potential mediators in the relationship between the WQS index of the 10 metals in blood and periodontitis explaining 25.36% and 2.02% of the relationship, respectively. Furthermore, generally consistent patterns of associations between metals and periodontitis and mediating roles of estrogen and albumin were observed after a series of sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSION This study provides evidence of positive associations between elevated levels of cadmium, lead or metal mixture and periodontitis, which may be partially mediated by sex hormones and oxidative stress indicators.

Abstract
Background/purpose Periodontitis is an independent risk factor for diabetes mellitus (DM), and DM patients had an increased risk in susceptibility to periodontitis. And serum zinc (Zn) levels were low in patients with periodontitis combined with DM. Herein, this study aimed to explore the association between dietary Zn intake and the risk of periodontitis in DM patients, in order to provide some scientific references for the prevention and treatment for periodontitis clinically. Materials and methods Demographic and clinical data of DM patients were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) database in 2009-2014 in this cross-sectional study. Weighted univariate logistic regression and backward regression analyses were used for covariates screening. Weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to explore the association between Zn and periodontitis with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses of age and gender were also performed. Results Of the eligible participants, 1281 had moderate or severe periodontitis. After adjusting for the covariates, we found that comparing to DM patients who had not reach the recommended Zn intake level, those who reached had low odds for periodontitis [OR = 0.76, 95% CI: (0.58-0.99)]. In patients who aged ≥65 years old [OR = 0.59, 95% CI: (0.36-0.97)] and were female [OR = 0.71, 95% CI: (0.51-0.99)], reaching the recommended level of Zn intake was related to low odds of periodontitis. Conclusion Sufficient dietary Zn intake antagonized the risk of periodontitis, which may provide some references for diet management in DM patients to reduce the risk of periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This review was based on the following question: "What is the state-of-the-art regarding the effect of zinc exposure in the oral cavity on a population of adults and children, compared to dental products containing materials other than zinc, considering in vivo (clinical trials and observational studies) and in vitro studies?" according to a PICOS strategy format. This study aims to analyze zinc application in dental materials, with different compositions and chemical formulations, considering how mechanical and biological properties may influence its clinical applicability. METHODS In vivo (clinical trials: controlled clinical trials (CCTs) and randomized controlled trials (RCTs); and observational studies: case control and cohort studies) trials or in vitro studies published in English or Italian during the last 10 years on children and adult patients with zinc exposure were included by three different reviewers using the MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases. RESULTS Titles and abstracts were evaluated following the eligibility criteria. The full texts of eligible studies were then reviewed against the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Scientific and technical information of the 33 included studies were collected into evidence tables, reporting data on in vivo and in vitro studies. A narrative approach was adopted. CONCLUSIONS Antibacterial activity was found to be the most studied property of zinc, but further investigations are needed to establish adjuvant zinc therapies in patients with oral disease.

Abstract
Objectives Vitamins are micronutrients that are required in small or trace amounts. They play an essential role in the metabolism and maintenance of tissue function. This investigation aimed to assess if a deficiency of certain essential vitamins is a risk factor for developing periodontitis. Methods The subject population consisted of 100 subjects, 50 with generalized chronic periodontitis and 50 periodontally healthy volunteers. The following clinical parameters were measured: Gingival Index, pocket depth (mm); Clinical Attachment Loss (mm). Serum samples were collected and analyzed for levels of cis-β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, vitamin B 12, folate, vitamin D, and vitamin E. Individual data collected was summarized and analyzed using statistical software. Results All the clinical parameters for periodontal status in the periodontitis group compared to healthy volunteers were highly significant (p < 0.0001). The mean levels of all the micronutrients, vitamin A precursors cis-β-carotene and β-cryptoxanthin, folate, vitamin B 12, D & E were lower in the periodontitis group than the healthy volunteers, although the difference was statistically significant only in case of β-cryptoxanthin, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D (p < 0.05). Conclusions The findings of our study suggest that serum micronutrient levels especially Vitamin A, Vitamin B 12, and Vitamin D may be modifiable risk factors for periodontal disease. Providing an optimized combination of various vitamins in each meal in combination with sufficient measures of standard oral hygiene care may provide an important role in the prevention of periodontitis.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with bacterial biofilm. It is characterized by loss of periodontal support tissue and has long been considered as a "silent disease". Because it is difficult to prevent and has a health impact that can not be ignored, researchers have been focusing on a mechanism-based treatment model. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent regulatory form of cell death, that directly or indirectly affects glutathione peroxidase through different signaling pathways, resulting in a decrease in cell antioxidant capacity, accumulation of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation, which cause oxidative cell death and tissue damage. Recently, some studies have proven that iron overload, oxidative stress, and lipid peroxidation exist in the process of periodontitis. Based on this, this article reviews the relationship between periodontitis and ferroptosis, in order to provide a theoretical reference for future research on the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a common type of inflammatory bone loss and a risk factor for systemic diseases. The pathogenesis of periodontitis involves inflammatory dysregulation, which represents a target for new therapeutic strategies to treat periodontitis. After establishing the correlation of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) level with periodontitis in patient samples, we test the hypothesis that the cfDNA-scavenging approach will benefit periodontitis treatment. We create a nanoparticulate cfDNA scavenger specific for periodontitis by coating selenium-doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (SeHANs) with cationic polyamidoamine dendrimers (PAMAM-G3), namely G3@SeHANs, and compare the activities of G3@SeHANs with those of soluble PAMAM-G3 polymer. Both G3@SeHANs and PAMAM-G3 inhibit periodontitis-related proinflammation in vitro by scavenging cfDNA and alleviate inflammatory bone loss in a mouse model of ligature-induced periodontitis. G3@SeHANs also regulate the mononuclear phagocyte system in a periodontitis environment, promoting the M2 over the M1 macrophage phenotype. G3@SeHANs show greater therapeutic effects than PAMAM-G3 in reducing proinflammation and alveolar bone loss in vivo. Our findings demonstrate the importance of cfDNA in periodontitis and the potential for using hydroxyapatite-based nanoparticulate cfDNA scavengers to ameliorate periodontitis.

Abstract
Although increasing evidence is emerging on the contribution of chemical elements in periodontal health, no studies have concomitantly evaluated the ionic profile in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva in relation to the underlying periodontal status. Our hypothesis is that these biofluids have distinctive ionic content. Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to analyze the elemental composition of GCF and saliva in order to explore which biological matrix and which combination of elements could discriminate between periodontitis and periodontal health. Twelve ions were analyzed in GCF and unstimulated saliva from 54 subjects (18 periodontally healthy, 18 untreated severe periodontitis and 18 treated severe periodontitis) using inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). These analytical techniques were able to determine levels of sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), while the other elements were below the detection threshold. Na and K ions were detected at elevated concentration in untreated periodontitis compared with treated periodontitis and healthy periodontium. Ca was increased in untreated periodontitis, but the difference was not significant. In saliva, only Na was significantly associated with periodontitis. The combination of Na and K in GCF enabled the correct assignment of a subject to the periodontitis or healthy group. Based on these preliminary results, GCF demonstrated higher clustering potential than saliva.

Abstract
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 80% of people rely on medicinal plants for their primary health needs. Traditional medicine's principal benefits are their vast population knowledge, low severe adverse effects rate, low cost, and the lack of a medical prescription to use them. While obesity has become a global health issue, an increase in finding cheap and fast ways to lose weight escalates medicinal herbs' use for this purpose, both in dietary supplements or in teas. At the same time that Brazil aims to expand traditional medicine, reports regarding toxicology and poisoning put natural products' safety in check. Plants can accumulate heavy metals and metalloids leading to health risks; however, there is a lack of information on that matter, possibly due to a lack of international standardization regarding elemental contamination - this study aimed to determine metal and metalloid concentrations in slimming medicinal plants and their respective teas and evaluate their safety consumption. Metal and metalloid content were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). All plants and teas were within the set limits for tolerable upper intake level (UL), provisional tolerable daily maximum intake (PTDMI), and provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI). The hazard quotient index (HQ) was above 1 for almost all plants, and the Hibiscus sabdariffa tea regarding aluminum content. The arsenic level was above the Brazilian Pharmacopeia limit in natura plants demonstrating risk in their consumption. Some herbs also presented detection for elements with no safety limits set, such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic, which could mark as a red flag for consumption once their security intake is not precise yet.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the morphological characteristics and stability of dental composites immersed in saliva collected from patients with leukemia. Material and Methods: A total number of five patients without systemic disease and 20 patients with leukemia (acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)) were included for saliva sampling. Composite disks were immersed in the leukemia, control, and artificial environments for 7 days. At the end of the experiment, atomic force microscopy (AFM), color stability (ΔE), and saliva elements analysis were performed. Statistical significance was considered for a p-value under 0.05. Results: The most changed surface resulted for ALL with a roughness that was almost double that of the untreated sample and was significantly increased compared to the healthy saliva. The effect of CLL was not as intense as observed for acute leukemia, but was significantly over the control. ALL seemed to modify structural components of the saliva, which were able to deteriorate the surface of the composite. ALL saliva promoted a significant dissolution of the initial feature of the samples and promoted nano-particle clusterization. All dental composites showed clinically acceptable color change values (ΔE < 3.3) in all four-leukemia salivas; CLL and CML showed large color differences for all composites. The total concentrations of P, Na, and K showed wide ranges of variations, while the coefficient of variation in Fe, Cu, and Mg showed narrow variations between the salvias’ investigated. The salivary concentration of zinc decreased considerably in the CLL and CML environments compared to the ALL and AML environments. Fe and Cu were significantly increased in the CML environment. Conclusions: Control and artificial salivas have a mild erosive effect on the surface of dental composites. The acute stage of the disease seems to deteriorate the surface roughness rather than its morphology, however, in the chronic stage, it is the surface morphology that mostly deteriorates.

Abstract
Objectives The present systematic review examined the available evidence on distinctive salivary ion profile in periodontitis compared to periodontal health and provided a qualitative assessment of the literature. Background Macro and trace elements are essential for cellular physiology, and their changes in biological fluids can be revelatory of an underlying pathological status. Methods Data from relevant studies identified from PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases were retrieved to answer the following PECO question: “In systemically healthy individuals, are there any differences in any salivary macro or trace element concentration between periodontally healthy subjects (H) and patients with periodontitis (P)?” Quality of included studies was rated using a modified version of the QUADOMICS tool. A consistency analysis was performed to identify significantly discriminant chemical elements. Results After the screening of 873 titles, 13 studies were included reporting data on 22 different elements. Among them, levels of sodium and potassium were consistently and significantly higher in P compared to H. Conflicting results were found for all the other elements, despite concentration of calcium, copper, and manganese mostly increased in saliva of P. Levels of magnesium were found higher in P than in H in 2 studies but lower in 3. Zinc resulted significantly increased in saliva from H compared to P individuals in 2 studies, but one study reported opposite results. Four studies were considered as high quality, while reporting of operative protocols and statistical analysis was a major limitation for the others. Due to high methodologic heterogeneity, meta‐analysis was not performed. Conclusions Levels of macro or trace elements were differentially identified in saliva across diverse periodontal conditions, having a major potential for investigation of oral homeostasis and for high‐resolution periodontal diagnosis. Products of inflammatory physiologic cellular impairment, such as sodium and potassium, were the most consistently associated with periodontitis (PROSPERO CRD42021235744).

Abstract
The oral conditions of an individual are the result of different factors, including the subject's genotype, oral hygiene habits, the type of diet, and lifestyle, such as smoking. Nutrition in the first years of life can affect dental health for a long time. To prevent mouth diseases, it is also important to eliminate unfavorable eating behaviour and to amplify protective ones. Eating habits, especially in pediatric age, are an easily modifiable and controllable factor, and diet, in addition to influencing the health of the oral cavity, plays a fundamental role in systemic health. Indeed, a sugar-rich diet can lead to conditions, such as diabetes, being overweight, and obesity. The present research was an epidemiological study, with the aim of highlighting some of the associations between nutrition and oral health. In particular, we studied those lesions of hard and soft tissues that are diagnosed most frequently by dentists: caries, enamel hypoplasia, periodontal disease, and aphotoxic lesions and their associations with nutritional deficiencies and excesses including proteins, vitamin A, vitamin D, B vitamins, and iron and calcium minerals. To perform this study, we recruited 70 patients from the pediatric and orthodontic clinics, aged between 3 and 15 years (y), with mean age of 10.4 y.o. The study was conducted by providing a questionnaire to pediatric patients' (supported from their parents or guardians) on individual eating habits, followed by an accurate oral cavity specialistic examination. The nutritional data were processed by using Grana Padano Observatory (OGP) software, freely provided online by the OPG. The statistical tests performed were the chi-square (χ2) for independence, and Cramér's V test was used to evaluate the associations between eating habits and oral pathologies. The results showed that certain nutritional vitamin deficiencies and nutritional excesses were associated with definite oral pathologies.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19)-induced severe acute respiratory syndrome is a global pandemic. As a preventive measure, human movement is restricted in most of the world. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), along with the World Health Organization (WHO) have laid out some therapeutic guidelines for the infected patients. However, other than handwashing and vigilance surrounding commonly encountered oronasal symptoms and fever, no universally available prophylactic measure has yet been established. In a pandemic, the accessibility of a prophylactic biologically active substance is crucial. Ideally, it would be something readily available at a low price to a larger percentage of the population with minimal risk. Studies have demonstrated that zinc may reduce viral replication and increase immune responses. While consuming zinc (within the recommended upper safety limits), as a prophylactic might provide an additional shield against the initiation and progression of COVID-19 would need clinical studies, the potential clearly exists. Even after vaccination, low zinc status may affect the vaccination responses.

Abstract
Over the past decade, there has been growing interest in the association between macro and trace minerals in body fluids and systemic diseases related to chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. Due to the paucity of data in the literature on periodontitis, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the relationship between mineral elements in saliva and periodontal status in patients with untreated and treated periodontitis compared to periodontally healthy controls. Salivary samples from 66 nonsmoker healthy patients (20 periodontally healthy, 24 untreated severe periodontitis and 22 treated severe periodontitis) were analyzed by using inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS). Significant increases in copper (Cu), sodium (Na), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) concentrations occurred in saliva of severe periodontitis subjects compared to periodontally healthy controls. No differences were detected between healthy controls and treated periodontitis patients apart from levels of zinc (Zn) and lithium (Li) that were found to be increased and reduced, respectively, in periodontitis group. Most subjects were correctly separated by cluster analysis into active periodontitis and periodontally healthy individuals. Treated periodontitis individuals were classified as healthy subjects. Based on these preliminary results, the assessment of salivary concentration of mineral elements might be useful in discriminating periodontal health and disease.

Abstract
Changes in the macro and trace element composition of saliva might be indicative for pathological changes in periodontal tissues. However, there is a lack of evidence in the literature showing associations between mineral elements and periodontal status. The aim of this study was to determine whether such associations occur. Totally, 190 systemically healthy non-smoker participants (mean age 32.2 ± 6.02; 50 periodontally healthy, 50 gingivitis, 50 chronic periodontitis, and 40 aggressive periodontitis individuals) were included in this cross-sectional study. Salivary levels of some macro and trace elements were measured by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Kruskal-Wallis's test was used for statistical analysis. Statistically significant differences were found in sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), vanadium (V), chromium Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), rubidium (Rb), strontium (Sr), and selenium (Se) concentrations among the groups. Significant increases in the essential minerals Na, Mg, K, Ca, Fe, and Se occurred in both periodontitis groups when compared to the gingivitis and periodontally healthy groups. Lower Se, Sr, Fe, Mn, and V concentrations were found in the aggressive periodontitis group than in the chronic periodontitis group. The results of this study demonstrated that assessment of mineral element concentrations in saliva might be useful in assessing periodontal health and disease. However, further studies are required to determine whether the change in a specific mineral element is the result of periodontal disease or is involved in its pathogenesis.

Abstract
Zinc, a metal found in the Earth's crust, is indispensable for human health. In the human body, around 60% of zinc is present in muscles, 30% in bones, and the remaining 10% in skin, hair, pancreas, kidneys and plasma. An adequate zinc balance is essential for the maintenance of skeletal growth, development and function. It is also necessary for basic cellular functions including enzyme activation, cell signaling and energy metabolism. Inadequate zinc status is associated with a wide variety of systemic disorders including cardiovascular impairment, musculoskeletal dysfunctions and oromaxillary diseases. In this article, we briefly discuss the role of zinc deficiency in the genesis of various oromaxillary diseases, and explain why adequate zinc homeostasis is vital for the maintenance of oral and general health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This case-control study aims to evaluate the oral health status and orofacial problems in a group of outpatients with eating disorders (ED)-either anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN)-further focusing on the influence of vomit. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-five women outpatients with AN or BN diagnosis were invited to participate, of which 33 agreed. ED outpatients and matched controls were submitted to a questionnaire and clinical oral examination. RESULTS Multivariate analysis identified a significantly higher incidence of teeth-related complications (i.e., tooth decay, dental erosion, and self-reported dentin hypersensitivity), periodontal disease, salivary alterations (i.e., hyposalivation and xerostomia), and oral mucosa-related complications in ED outpatients. Dental erosion, self-reported dentin hypersensitivity, hyposalivation, xerostomia, and angular cheilitis were found to be highly correlated with the vomiting behavior. CONCLUSIONS ED outpatients were found to present a higher incidence of oral-related complications and an inferior oral health status, compared to gender- and age-matched controls. Alterations verified within outpatients were acknowledged to be quite similar to those previously reported within inpatients, in both of nature and severity, thus sustaining that the cranio-maxillofacial region is significantly affected by ED, even in the early/milder forms of the condition, as expectedly verified within outpatients.

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the profile of certain trace elements having therapeutic properties related to diabetes mellitus. The investigated plants were Aloe camperi, Meriandra dianthera, Lepidium sativum, Brassica nigra, and Nigella sativa. These plants are traditionally used in the management of diabetes in Eritrea. The elemental analysis was conducted using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) techniques. The accuracy of the methods was verified using in-house reference materials (CRMs) and no significant differences were observed between the measured and certified values. The analysis displayed variable concentrations of the different trace elements including Zn, Cr, V, Mn, and Se in the plants. Moreover, the levels of major elements, such as Mg, Ca, K, Na, and Ba, and heavy metals, such as Fe, Cu, Ni, Co, As, and Pb, were determined and found to be in the permissible limit defined by WHO. Among the plants, Meriandra dianthera showed the highest levels of Mn, Cr, V, and other elements and the values were significantly different (P < 0.05).
