Abstract
The present research aimed to review the clinical applications of botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A) injection into the anterior belly of the digastric muscle (ABDM) and to highlight the potential role of the BTX-A injection into ABDM in preventing postsurgical relapse. Five Class II malocclusion patients who underwent orthognathic surgery received BTX-A injections into both ABDM for the prevention of postoperative relapse. The relapse was evaluated using lateral cephalometric radiographs by comparing the postoperative cephalometric analyses at two different time points, postoperatively at 2 weeks (T1), and long-term, at 9 months after the surgical intervention (T2). The results demonstrated no significant differences between T2 and T1 for the Selle-Nasion-point A (SNA) angle, Selle-Nasion-point B (SNB) angle, point A-Nasion-point B (ANB) angle, mandibular length, and sagittal mandibular position. The patients exhibited stable occlusion without any signs of relapse after the surgery. A single BTX-A injection into the ABDM can effectively prevent postoperative relapse in Class II malocclusion patients, following orthognathic surgery. From a clinical perspective, in case of optimal dosage and procedure, BTX-A injection could be considered as the primary option for the prevention of postsurgical relapse for Class II malocclusion patients.

Abstract
Guided bone regeneration is frequently used to reconstruct the alveolar bone to rehabilitate the mastication using dental implants. The purpose of this article is to research the properties of eggshell membrane (ESM) and its potential application in tissue engineering. The study focuses on the structural, mechanical, and histological characteristics of ESM extracted from Gallus domesticus eggs and to compare them to a commercially available porcine pericardium membrane (Jason® membrane, botiss biomaterials GmbH, Zossen, Germany). Thus, histology was performed on the ESM, and a comparison of the microstructure through scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) was conducted. Also, mechanical tensile strength was evaluated. Samples of ESM were prepared and treated with alcohol for fixation and disinfection. Histological analysis revealed that the ESM architecture is constituted out of loose collagen fibers. However, due to the random arrangement of collagen fibers within the membrane, it might not be an effective barrier and occlusive barrier. Comparative analyses were performed between the ESM and the AFM examinations and demonstrated differences in the surface topography and mechanical properties between the two membranes. The ESM exhibited rougher surfaces and weaker mechanical cohesion attributed to its glycoprotein content. The study concludes that while the ESM displays favorable biocompatibility and resorb ability, its non-uniform collagen arrangement limits its suitability as a guided bone regeneration membrane in the current non-crosslinked native form. Crosslinking techniques may enhance its properties for such applications. Further research is needed to explore modifications and processing methods that could leverage the ESM's unique properties for tissue engineering purposes.

Abstract
Cancer still represents one of the biggest challenges in current medical practice. Among different types of cancer, oral cancer has a huge impact on patients due to its great visibility, which is more likely to create social stigma and increased anxiety. New early diagnose methods are still needed to improve treatment efficiency and patients' life quality. Raman/SERS (Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy) spectroscopy has a unique and powerful potential for detecting specific molecules that can become priceless biomarkers in different pathologies, such as oral cancer. In this study, a batch of saliva samples obtained from a group of 17 patients with oro-maxillofacial pathologies compared with saliva samples from 18 healthy donors using the aforementioned methods were evaluated. At the same time, opiorphin, potassium thiocyanate and uric acid were evaluated as potential specific biomarkers for oro-maxillofacial pathologies using multivariate analysis. A careful examination of SERS spectra collected on saliva samples showed that the spectra are dominated by the vibrational bands of opiorphin, potassium thiocyanate and uric acid. Given the fact that all these small molecules are found in very small amounts, we filtrated all the samples to get rid of large molecules and to improve our analysis. By using solid plasmonic substrates, we were able to gain information about molecular concentration and geometry of interaction. On the other hand, the multivariate analysis of the salivary spectra contributed to developing a new detection method for oral cancer.

Abstract
Guided bone regeneration (GBR) utilizing eggshell membrane (ESM) as a potential biomaterial for dental implant therapy augmentation was explored in this study. ESM, an environmentally friendly waste product, possesses collagen-rich characteristics. The biocompatibility and histological responses of ESM were investigated in a rat model. Twelve young adult Wistar rats were used in this study. ESM samples were implanted in subcutaneous and intramuscular pockets, and samples were collected at 48 hours, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks post-implantation. Histological analysis revealed the changes in ESM over time. Results showed that ESM maintained its structural integrity, induced a moderate cellular response, and exhibited slow degradation, indicating potential biocompatibility. However, the lack of organized collagen arrangement in ESM led to the formation of irregular and polymorphic spaces, allowing cell migration. Encapsulation of ESM by newly proliferating collagen fibers and multinucleated giant cells was observed at later time points, indicating a foreign body reaction. Crosslinking might improve its performance as a separation membrane, as it has the potential to resist enzymatic degradation and enhance biomechanical properties. In conclusion, ESM demonstrated biocompatibility, slow degradation, and lack of foreign body reaction. While not suitable as a complete separation membrane due to irregular collagen arrangement, further research involving crosslinking could enhance its properties, making it a viable option for guided bone regeneration applications in dental implant therapy. This study highlights the potential of repurposing waste materials for medical purposes and underscores the importance of controlled collagen structure in biomaterial development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim was to assess, in vitro, the effects of radioiodine-131 (I-131) on the structure of titanium implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 28 titanium implants were divided into 7 groups (n = 4) and irradiated at 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, 192 and 384 hours. At the end of the experiment, each sample was investigated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical measures. RESULTS The control sample revealed a smooth and compact surface. The small micro-sized porosity is slightly visible at the macroscopic level, but the precise details cannot be observed. A mild exposure to the radioactive solution for 6 to 24 h showed a good preservation of the macro-structural aspects such as thread details and surface quality. Significant changes occurred after 48 h of exposure. It was noticed that the open-circuit potential (OCP) value of the non-irradiated implants move toward more noble potentials during the first 40 min of exposure to the artificial saliva and then stabilizes at a constant value of -143 mV. A displacement of the OCP values toward more negative values was observed for all irradiated implants; these potential shifts are decreasing, as the irradiation period of the tested implants increased. CONCLUSION After exposure to I-131, the structure of titanium implants is well preserved up to 12 h. The eroded particles start to appear in the microstructural details after 24 h of exposure and their numbers progressively increase up to 384 h after exposure.

Abstract
This study aimed to provide a complex analysis of the modifications in craniofacial skeleton development that may arise following the diagnosis of pediatric benign jaw tumors. A prospective study was undertaken involving 53 patients younger than 18 years of age, who presented for treatment at the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca, with a primary benign jaw lesion between 2012 and 2022. A total of 28 odontogenic cysts (OCs), 14 odontogenic tumors (OTs), and 11 non-OTs were identified. At follow-up, dental anomalies were identified in 26 patients, and overjet changes were found in 33 children; lateral crossbite, midline shift, and edge-to-edge bite were found in 49 cases; deep or open bite were found in 23 patients. Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) were found in 51 children, with unilateral TMJ changes identified in 7 cases and bilateral modifications found in 44 patients. Degenerative changes in the TMJ were also diagnosed in 22 pediatric patients. Although benign lesions could be associated with dental malocclusions, a direct etiological factor could be not identified. The presence of jaw tumors or their surgical treatment could, however, be linked to a change of the occlusal relationships or the onset of a TMD.

Abstract
Non-melanoma skin cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in the human body and unfortunately the incidence continues to increase. NMSC is represented by the basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), which are the most prevalent forms, and basosquamous cell carcinomas (BSC) together with Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), which are rare types but with a very aggressive pattern and poor prognosis. The pathological diagnosis is hard to assess without a biopsy, even by the dermoscopy. Moreover, the staging can be problematic because there is no access clinically to the thickness of the tumor and the depth of the invasion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of ultrasonography (US), which is a very efficient imaging method, non-irradiating and cheap, in diagnosis and treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer in the head and neck region. Thirty-one patients with highly suspicious malignant lesions of the head and neck skin were evaluated in the Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery Department and Imaging Department in Cluj Napoca, Romania. All tumors were measured with three transducers: 13 MHz, 20 MHz and 40 MHz. Doppler examination and elastography were also used. The length, width, diameter, thickness, the presence of necrosis, status of regional lymph nodes, the presence of hyperechoic spots, strain ratio and vascularization were all recorded. After that, all patients were treated by surgical resection of the tumor and reconstruction of the defect. Immediately after surgical resection, all tumors were measured again after the same protocol. The resection margins were evaluated by all three types of transducers in order to detect malignant involvement and the results were compared with the histopathological report. We found that the 13 MHz transducers offered a big picture of the tumor but the level of details, in the form of the presence of the hyperechoic spots, is reduced. We recommend this transducer for evaluation of surgical margins or for the large skin tumors. The 20 and 40 MHz transducers are better for viewing the particularities of malignant lesions and for an accurate measurement; however, in the case of large size lesions, assessing all three dimensions of the tumor can be difficult. The intralesional hyperechoic spots are present in case of BCC and they can be used for differential diagnosis of BCC.

Abstract
Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is one of the most frequent types of malignancy in the human body with an increasing incidence. Short, non-coding RNA molecules called microRNAs (miRNAs) can control post-transcriptional gene expression and they have a significant role in several physiological cellular processes and pathologies, including cancer. Depending on the functions of the genes, miRNAs may function as oncogenes or tumor suppressors. The aim of this paper was to describe the role of miRNA-34a and miRNA-221 in head and neck NMSC. Thirty-eight NMSC match paired (tumor and adjacent) tissue samples were evaluated by qRT-PCR. Total RNA was extracted and isolated from tissue samples using the phenol-chloroform (Trireagent) method according to the manufacturer's protocol. The concentration of RNA was measured by a NanoDrop-1000 spectrophotometer. The expression level of each miRNA was calculated by threshold cycle. For all statistical tests, the 0.05 significance level was used and two-tailed p values. All analyses were conducted in an R environment for statistical computing and graphics. We found the miRNA-221 being overexpressed in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (p < 0.05), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and basosquamous cell carcinoma (BSC) compared with adjacent normal tissue. Additionally, the levels of miRNA-221 were two times higher (p < 0.05) in cases where the excision of the tumor was done with positive margins (R1), which means that we are the first to highlight the potential role of miRNA-221 in the microscopical local invasion. Mi-RNA-34a expression was altered in the malignant tissue compared with the adjacent normal one both in BCC and SCC but not statistically significantly. In conclusion, NMSC are challenging because of their increasing incidence and rapidly evolving development and discovering their molecular mechanisms of action lead us to understand tumorigenesis and evolution, while also contributing to the implementation of novel therapeutic keys.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to identify and summarize the characteristic features of eggshell for regeneration purpose in oral surgery procedures. Methods A review of literature was undertaken based on the PubMed database. A search to reveal the current state of knowledge and the current uses of the eggshell as a biomaterial was performed. The characteristics of the materials, the specific use, the procedure and the outcome were extracted from the articles. Results The materials have been found to be used in humans, animals, and in vitro studies. There is a wide use regarding oral surgery especially in experimental models. There have also been attempts to enhance certain properties and improve the capabilities of eggshell as a biomaterial. There is yet a commercial product to be developed and approved for human use. Conclusions Eggshell can be an important biowaste which can be of use in guided bone regeneration procedures, but it has not yet entered the commercial phase and approval through official regulation channels.

Abstract
Background and objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the available evidence of using enamel matrix derivate in the treatment of peri-implantitis. Materials and methods: Three electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) were searched until August 2022 to identify relevant articles. The inclusion criteria consisted in human clinical studies that reported the use of enamel matrix derivate (EMD) in surgical and non-surgical treatment of peri-implantitis. The risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and for non-RCTs ROBINS-I tool. Results: Clinical studies included were published between 2012 and 2022 and consisted of two randomized clinical trials (RCTs) for non-surgical therapy and two RCTs, three prospective cohort studies, and one retrospective case series in surgical therapy. Due to the heterogeneity of patients' characteristics and assessment of peri-implant therapy, statistical analysis could not be achieved. Conclusions: The use of EMD indicated a positive effect on both surgical and non-surgical therapy. However, the available literature is scarce, with low evidence in non-surgical approach and modest evidence in surgical approach using EMD. More RCTs with standardize protocols are necessary to evaluate the efficacy of using EMD in both therapies.

Abstract
This study aims at evaluating and categorizing patients’ objective and subjective postoperative recovery symptoms after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery assigning the healing process. The patients were monitored throughout the recovery process, and their symptoms were managed. A prospective, observational study was performed. Patients with Class II and III malocclusion (aged 18 to 35) were evaluated and monitored preoperatively, and postoperatively at 48 h, 2 weeks, 1 month, and 3 months postsurgery. A questionnaire was used to assess pain and anesthesia/hypoesthesia. The most common objective and subjective signs that were correlated with the healing process were edema, hematoma, trismus, pain, and anesthesia/hypoesthesia. Edema peaked at 48−72 h postoperatively (distance between eye’s external canthus and gonion, mean difference = 4.53, between tragus and cheilion, mean difference = 7, between tragus and gnathion, mean difference = 4.65, p < 0.001); mouth opening amplitude was significantly decreased during the first two weeks postsurgery (class II, mean difference = 32.42, p = 0.006, class III, mean difference = 44.57, p < 0.001), but it steadily and considerably improved over three months. The nose tended to widen postsurgery. The most severe pain experienced by patients was of medium intensity in the mandibular body, described as pressure, and usually did not spread. Patients were most severely and persistently impacted by anesthesia/hypoesthesia.

Abstract
Background and aims Labio-maxillo-palatal clefts represent one of the most common congenital malformations, which manifests through aesthetic, functional and psycho-social alterations. The long course of multidisciplinary treatments represent a psycho-emotional and financial burden for both the patient and his family, being an important factor in the complex management of these patients.The study aims to assess the quality of life of parents of children with clefts and the psychosocial impact on the family and society. Methods The study included 40 subjects who met the inclusion criteria for this study. Following patient informed consent and the approval of the ethics committee, the data were collected by applying the quality-of-life evaluation questionnaire. The evaluation was performed using the Likert scale (1 - not at all to 5 - very satisfactory), and the data were statistically processed. Results Most of the questionnaires were completed by the mother, who accompanied the child to the regular check-up; 58% of parents believe that their social life is not affected by having a child with a cleft, and 83% say that interfamilial relationships have not been affected. Most parents consider that the postoperative result was very good, which led to improved psycho-social integration of the child. Conclusions The study confirmed an acceptable quality of life for the children's parents, which was not influenced by the family presence of a child with a cleft. At the same time, the excessive care of the parents for the child with the cleft was confirmed. The postoperative improvement of the aesthetic aspect led to a much better psycho-emotional integration of the child in the society.

Abstract
Simple Summary In individuals with severe malocclusions, orthognathic surgery seeks to rebalance the relationships between the jaws by providing a stable occlusion, a healthy muscle balance, and the functioning of the temporomandibular joint. Cone beam computed tomography may be used to determine the position of the mandibular condyle in the glenoid fossa. This study aimed to assess how the position of the mandibular condyle varies in class II and III malocclusions before and after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. Before and after orthognathic surgery, 56 TMJs from 28 patients were studied. Following surgery, both class II and class III patients experienced changes in the anterior joint space, posterior joint space, condyle position, and condyle angle. The preliminary findings are promising for determining changes in condyle position and joint spaces that might guide oral and maxillofacial surgeons to address a debilitating clinical affliction. Abstract This study aimed at evaluating the mandibular condyle position changes before and after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery in class II and III malocclusion patients. CBCT scans from patients who underwent bimaxillary orthognathic surgery were analyzed: Le Fort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO). Both condyles were independently assessed for their largest anterior and posterior joint spaces, smallest medial joint spaces, and condyle angles concerning the transverse line. In the sagittal plane, the minimum size of the anterior and posterior joint spaces was measured. In the coronal plane, the smallest medial joint space was measured. The position of the condyle within the glenoid fossa was determined before and after surgery. A total of 56 TMJs from 28 patients were studied. Following orthognathic surgery, the anterior and posterior space in class II increased. Postoperatively, the anterior joint space in class III decreased. In 42.85% of malocclusion class II patients and 57.14% of malocclusion class III patients, the pre-and post-surgical position of the condyle changed, the condyle was anteriorly positioned (42.85%) in class II patients and centrically positioned (71.4%) in class III patients. Significant changes in the joint space, condylar position, and condyle angle were found in the class II and class III subjects.

Abstract
The temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a syndrome that affects the masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Its pathophysiology is not yet fully known. Cephalometric analysis is used for routine evaluation regarding orthodontic treatment and other purposes. The aim of this study was to assess if using cephalometric analysis and TMJ conservative therapy to evaluate the hyoid bone position and the cervical posture reduced symptoms in adults with TMDs compared to no intervention. The authors conducted a systematic review of the literature (PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase) for clinical studies of TMDs with conservative treatment and lateral cephalometric analysis of the hyoid and cervical posture. To assess the risk of bias for non-randomized clinical trials ROBINS-I tool was used. Out of 137 studies found, 6 remained to be included. Most of them found a link between TMD and lateral cephalometric analysis, but there was a high risk of bias. This review found a possible link between TMDs, the neck and cervical posture. There is a benefit reported regarding the use of the lateral cephalometry as a treatment, but more extensive prospective randomized clinical trials are necessary to be able to draw definitive conclusions.

Abstract
The current study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) examination in cleft children and adolescents, the age of the first CBCT exposure, and the criteria that justified the first CBCT exposure. A number of 229 non-syndromic cleft subjects aged between 0–22 years receiving treatment in the same specialized surgical center in orofacial cleft treatment were studied. A cleft group of 64 cleft lip and palate (CLP) children with at least one CBCT exposure was identified based on CBCT records. Parameters related to diagnosis and treatment planning in cleft deformity were considered dental anomalies and bone morphology changes. The examiners assessed whether the treatment option was necessary, not necessary, or could not be evaluated at the age of CBCT exposure. A number of thirty-nine unilateral clefts and fifteen bilateral clefts were identified. Posterior palatal cleft was present in six children (mean age: 15.03±5.55 years; male/female ratio: 1/0.8). Alveolar bone morphology changes were found in 90.58% of cases; jaw relationship changes in 71.82%; nasal fossa morphology changes in 74.99%; airway obstruction in 49.98% and maxillary asymmetry in 87.48%. Orthodontic planning was necessary for 85.93% of CLP patients, and orthognathic surgery in 39.05%. The usefulness of CBCT in patients with CLP varied with age, with reduced value for the evaluation of impaction and root resorption under the age of ten.

Abstract
Orbital fractures are a common finding in facial trauma, and serious complications may arise when orbital reconstruction is not performed properly. The virtual planning can be used to print stereolithographic models or to manufacture patient-specific titanium orbital implants (PSIs) through the process of selective laser melting. This method is currently considered the most accurate technique for orbital reconstruction. Even with the most accurate techniques of bone reconstruction, there are still situations where enophthalmos is present postoperatively, and it may be produced by intraorbital soft tissue atrophy. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the orbital soft tissue after posttraumatic reconstruction of the orbital walls’ fractures. Ten patients diagnosed and treated for unilateral orbital fractures were included in this prospective study. A postoperative CT scan of the head region with thin slices (0.6 mm) and soft and bone tissue windows was performed after at least 6 months. After data processing, the STL files were exported, and the bony volume, intraorbital fat tissue volume, and the muscular tissue volume were measured. The volumes of the reconstructed orbit tissues were compared with the volumes of the healthy orbit tissues for each patient. Our findings conclude that a higher or a lower grade of fat and muscular tissue loss is present in all cases of reconstructed orbital fractures. This can stand as a guide for primary or secondary soft tissue augmentation in orbital reconstruction.

Abstract
Background and objectives: The aim was to evaluate the current literature on the influence of inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis/Crohn’s disease) in dental implant osseointegration in human clinical studies. Materials and methods: This review was conducted under the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were electronic screened to find relevant articles published until October 2021. The inclusion criteria consisted of human clinical studies that reported the use of dental implant in patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease. Risk of bias was assessed according to The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology criteria. Results: A total of 786 studies were identified from databases. Of these, six studies were included in the review and reported the use of implants in patients with Crohn’s disease. No articles were available for ulcerative colitis. Included articles indicated that Crohn’s disease may determine early and late implant failure. Besides Crohn’s disease, several patients presented associated risk factors and systemic disease that determined implant failure. Conclusions: The presence of clinical studies on the influence of IBD in implant therapy is low. When recommending an implant therapy to IBD patients, the multidisciplinary team should be aware of side effects and a close collaboration between members of this team is necessary. More data are needed to sustain the effect of IBD on implant therapy.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the morphological characteristics and stability of dental composites immersed in saliva collected from patients with leukemia. Material and Methods: A total number of five patients without systemic disease and 20 patients with leukemia (acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)) were included for saliva sampling. Composite disks were immersed in the leukemia, control, and artificial environments for 7 days. At the end of the experiment, atomic force microscopy (AFM), color stability (ΔE), and saliva elements analysis were performed. Statistical significance was considered for a p-value under 0.05. Results: The most changed surface resulted for ALL with a roughness that was almost double that of the untreated sample and was significantly increased compared to the healthy saliva. The effect of CLL was not as intense as observed for acute leukemia, but was significantly over the control. ALL seemed to modify structural components of the saliva, which were able to deteriorate the surface of the composite. ALL saliva promoted a significant dissolution of the initial feature of the samples and promoted nano-particle clusterization. All dental composites showed clinically acceptable color change values (ΔE < 3.3) in all four-leukemia salivas; CLL and CML showed large color differences for all composites. The total concentrations of P, Na, and K showed wide ranges of variations, while the coefficient of variation in Fe, Cu, and Mg showed narrow variations between the salvias’ investigated. The salivary concentration of zinc decreased considerably in the CLL and CML environments compared to the ALL and AML environments. Fe and Cu were significantly increased in the CML environment. Conclusions: Control and artificial salivas have a mild erosive effect on the surface of dental composites. The acute stage of the disease seems to deteriorate the surface roughness rather than its morphology, however, in the chronic stage, it is the surface morphology that mostly deteriorates.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) is a biomaterial used for periodontal regenerative therapy due to its properties of stimulating cementum development and bone synthesis. Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects healing and predisposes to infection. The aim of this review was to evaluate the current studies available on the application and results of EMD for periodontal regenerative therapy under diabetic conditions. Materials and Methods: Five databases (PubMed, ResearchGate, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar) were searched for relevant articles, using specific keywords in different combinations. The inclusion criteria were clinical trials, case reports, case studies, and animal studies published in English, where periodontal treatment for bone defects includes EMD, and it is performed under diabetic conditions. Results: Of the 310 articles resulted in search, five studies published between 2012 and 2020 met the inclusion criteria and were selected for the current review. In human studies, the use of EMD in infrabony defects showed favorable results at follow-up. In animal studies, periodontal regeneration was reduced in diabetic rats. Conclusions: EMD might promote bone healing when used under diabetic conditions for the regenerative periodontal therapy. Due to limited number of studies, more data are required to sustain the effects of EMD therapy in diabetic settings.

Abstract
Vascular anomalies comprise a wide and heterogeneous group of lesions that may be found in all parts of the body, with most of the cases of vascular malformations involving the head-and-neck region. Ultrasound (US) is the reliable first-line imaging technique to assess flow parameters. However, in some cases, US fails to depict the real extent of the lesions. On the other hand, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows the evaluation of the full extension and anatomic relationship of the vascular anomalies with the neighboring structures and provides hemodynamic characterization using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI), avoiding unnecessary invasive catheter-based procedures. DCE-MRI angiography can make a distinction between low- and high-flow vascular anomalies and it is useful for selecting adequate therapy and appreciating prognosis. The aim of this paper is to review the role of DCE-MRI in the evaluation of flow characteristics and lesion extent in vascular anomalies of the head-and-neck region.

Abstract
The present study investigated the capacity of Suprathel® (a copolymer membrane, so far validated for skin regeneration) to also regenerate oral tissue – mucosa and bone, by comparing this biomaterial, in a split-mouth rabbit model, to Mucoderm®, a xenogeneic collagen matrix certified for keratinized oral mucosa healing. The clinical reason behind this experimental animal model was to determine whether the benefits of this advanced skin regeneration product (Suprathel®) could be conveyed for future evaluation in clinical trials of oral tissue regeneration in humans. The outcomes of this study validated the use of Suprathel®, a terpolymer of polylactide with trimethylene carbonate and ε-caprolactone, for stimulation of oral epithelium and alveolar bone regeneration in rabbits. Both Suprathel® and Mucoderm® exhibited comparable results and the null hypothesis stating a comparable regenerating effect of these two materials could not be rejected.

Abstract
Preoperative diagnosis of parotid tumors plays a crucial role in selecting and planning the surgical treatment. Ultrasound (US) with its modern techniques can contribute to the differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. This paper aims to achieve a comprehensive review of the ultrasound techniques used in the differential diagnosis of parotid tumors, based on the latest literature data. Considering that most parotid gland tumors are located in the superficial lobe, US is frequently the first imaging technique used for the diagnosis of parotid tumors. Sonoelastography can provide additional data on the elasticity of parotid tumors, but there is an overlap between malignant and benign parotid tumors parameters. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound adds value to conventional ultrasound and allows a more complete characterization of parotid tumors. Many authors have reported promising results using contrast-enhanced ultrasound in the differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. Multiparametric ultrasound with a careful and systematic approach usually allows an accurate differential diagnosis of parotid tumors.

Abstract
Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on dental treatments, the present research aimed to assess the infection rate among dental practitioners from Romania and to analyze the economic impact of Covid-19 on dental offices. We designed a web-based survey distributed to dental practitioners from Romania. The survey included questions that assessed demographic data from the dentists who completed the questionnaire, along with economic aspects and epidemiological aspects related to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental practitioners. Five hundred and seven dentists completed the survey. Three-quarters of the assessed dental offices reported a decrease in the income and patient volume compared to 2019. More than half of the patients visiting the dental office paid more attention to the risk of infection and to prevention methods. Most dental offices implemented specific protective equipment for doctors. Three thousand seven hundred thirty-five dental practitioners were working in the 507 assessed dental offices, and among them, 238 COVID-19 cases of contamination were recorded. High contamination rates were registered in October (48, 20.1%), November (66, 27.7%), and December 2020 (52, 21.85%). Contamination mostly took place at home (114 cases, 47.8%) or resulted from event attendance. This study underlines an overall greater level of safety and an increased patient addressability in dental offices.

Abstract
The current paper presents a case report of lower eyelid reconstruction after removal of a basal cell carcinoma. Our novel reconstruction method consists of translation and rotation of a paramedian forehead flap into the defect, conjunctivorhinostomy for reconstruction of the nasolacrimal duct, and placement of a sandwich ear cartilage graft that is primarily seated into the forehead flap to maintain the vertical dimension of the eyelid. This “all-in-one” technique has the advantage of one-step reconstruction, avoiding multiple surgical procedures.

Abstract
Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer is one of the most common cancer types and the face is the most affected region. The diagnosis of the skin cancer relies on clinical inspection, palpation, dermoscopy followed by incisional or excisional biopsy. When skin cancers are removed from the face, many factors are involved, including aesthetics. In addition, surgical planning with preoperative acknowledgement of the tumour margins is often the key to avoid incomplete excision, the need for reintervention, or in the prevention of functional and aesthetical defects in the treatment of skin tumours. In recent years, the development of new technologies in sonography, including high frequencies transducers can provide a full range of data. It can offer valuable information regarding the size of the tumour including the depth of invasion, the extent of the tumour, histology and subtypes of the lesions which are helpful for the treatment plan. It also may be efficient in detection of positive margins after surgery and it could play a role in the treatment of skin cancer, prevention of local recurrences and overall control of the disease. Abstract
An accurate preoperative diagnosis of parotid tumors is essential for the selection and planning of surgical treatment. Various modern cross-sectional imaging and cytologic investigations can support the differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. The aim of this study was to achieve a comprehensive and updated review of modern imaging and cytologic investigations used in parotid tumor diagnosis, based on the latest literature data. This literature review could serve as a guide for clinicians in selecting different types of investigations for the preoperative differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with its dynamic and advanced sequences is the first-line imaging investigation used in differentiating parotid tumors. Computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET)-CT provide limited indications in differentiating parotid tumors. Fine needle aspiration biopsy and core needle biopsy can contribute with satisfactory results to the cytological diagnosis of parotid tumors. Dynamic MRI with its dynamic contrast-enhanced and diffusion-weighted sequences provides the best accuracy for the preoperative differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. CT allows the best evaluation of bone invasion, being useful when MRI cannot be performed, and PET-CT has value in the follow-up of cancer patients. The dual cytological and imaging approach is the safest method for an accurate differential diagnosis of parotid tumors.

Abstract
Introduction In recent years a link between periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases has been proposed. Oxidative stress has been found to be involved in their pathophysiology. Objectives The aim of this study was to demonstrate that a wire ligature placed around the first mandibular molars of the rat causes inflammation in the periodontium and lipid deposits in the aorta, via oxidative stress. Methods Twenty male Wistar rats were divided randomly into two groups of 10: Control group and Periodontitis group. An orthodontic wire ligature was placed around the cervix of the first mandibular molar and was kept in place for 4 weeks. Clinical attachment loss was determined to assess the gingival recession. Aorta was harvested after 4 weeks and the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the aorta tissue homogenate were determined. Lipid deposits were evaluated using Oil Red staining and immunofluorescence under confocal microscopy. Total lipid deposits in the aorta were assessed using a computer morphometry system. Results Significant gingival recession was observed in the Periodontitis group in comparison with the Control group. Increased MDA levels were present in the aorta in the ligatured rats in comparison with the Control group. Significant lipid deposits were observed in the aorta of the Periodontitis group as opposed to the Control group. Conclusions The affixing of an orthodontic wire ligature produces gingival recession, increased oxidative stress and lipid deposits in the rat descending aorta.

Abstract
The associations between periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases have been intensely studied in recent years. Oxidative stress is involved in the initiation and both progression of periodontitis and atherosclerosis. Antioxidants can reduce the effects of oxidative stress on inflammatory diseases. Our aim was to measure the effects of a grape seed extract (GSE), rich in antioxidants, on atherosclerosis caused by ligature-induced periodontitis in rats. Thirty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups of 10: control group, periodontitis group, and periodontitis group treated with GSE (GSE group). Periodontitis was induced by placing an orthodontic wire around the cervix of the first mandibular molar and keeping it in place for 4 weeks. On days 1, 7 and 28, blood samples were taken to assess oxidative stress and inflammation markers (malondialdehyde and glutathione - MDA, reduced glutathione - GSH, C reactive protein) and lipids. After 4 weeks, the animals were euthanized, and aortas were collected for histopathologic examination. MDA was significantly higher in Periodontitis group compared to the other groups only at day 7. GSH was significantly increased in the Control and GSE groups on days 1 and 7, compared to Periodontitis group and on day 28 higher in GSE vs. Periodontitis groups. C reactive protein was significantly increased in the Periodontitis group on days 1 and 7 compared to both groups. Cholesterol was significantly decreased in the aortas of GSE group at day 28 compared to the Periodontitis group. Oral administration of a grape seed extract reduces the oxidative stress, inflammation and atherosclerosis in a rat model of ligature-induced periodontitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the study is to evaluate the ultrasonographic dimensional changes of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle (ABDM), occurring after intramuscular botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) injection during orthognathic surgery, in a series of five Class II malocclusion patients. METHODS All the patients received 20 units of BTX-A, into both ABDM, intraoperatively. The length, width and cross-sectional area (CSA) of the ABDM were ultrasonographically measured at three different time points: T0 (preoperatively), T1 (postoperatively at 2 weeks after the surgical intervention), and T2 (postoperatively at 6-9 months). RESULTS A statistically significant higher length of the ABDM was noted postoperatively, at T1 and T2 compared to T0. The patients showed an increased length by 12.2% at 2 weeks postoperatively and continued to increase, reaching 24.6% at 6 months. A decreased width of ABDM by 6.5% at T1 compared with T0 was also found. CONCLUSIONS Postoperative ultrasound (US) follow-up measurements in patients with Class II malocclusion, orthognathic surgery and intraoperative BTX-A injection in the ABDM, showed dimensional changes of the muscle, with elongation and thinning. The muscular modifications were more pronounced at 6 months postoperatively, indicating consistency and potential benefit of using BTX-A in reducing the risk of surgical relapse. Further data on longer-term follow-up and larger number of cases are necessary.

Abstract
The search for bone reconstruction materials and methods is an ongoing challenge. The aim of this review is to systemically search the available literature concerning the clinical performance of eggshell as a substitute material in guided bone regeneration in oral surgery. Five databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase) were searched up to February 2020. Clinical trials that used eggshell as a bone substitute material were included in the review. Animal and in vivo studies were excluded from the review. ROBINS-I was used to evaluate the risk of bias. A total of 840 studies were retrieved, out of which 55 full-text articles were screened. Five studies were finally included: one study showed critical and four serious risk of bias. A total of 74 patients and 88 intervention sites were included in the five studies. Clinical and radiological evaluation showed complete healing during the follow-ups. Statistically significant radiological and clinical evidence of new bone formation was achieved for socket preservation, grafting after third molar extraction, and cystic/apicectomy grafting. One patient with complications was reported. Histological analysis and micro computed tomography confirmed that it promotes bone regeneration. A comparison with synthetic hydroxyapatite showed similar healing characteristics. Within the limitations of the included studies, the eggshell can be safely and efficiently used in guided bone regeneration procedures, but more research is needed to completely evaluate the full potential of this material.

Abstract
In the context of the SARS-CoV-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) pandemic, the medical system has been subjected to many changes. Face-to-face treatments have been suspended for a period of time. After the lockdown, dentists have to be aware of the modalities to protect themselves and their patients in order not to get infected. Dental practitioners are potentially exposed to a high degree of contamination with SARS-CoV-2 while performing dental procedures that produce aerosols. It should also be noted that the airways, namely the oral cavity and nostrils, are the access pathways for SARS-CoV-2. In order to protect themselves and their patients, they have to use full personal protective equipment. Relevant data regarding this pandemic are under evaluation and are still under test. In this article, we made a synthesis about the way in which SARS-CoV-2 spreads, how to diagnose a novel corona virus infection, what the possible treatments are, and which protective personal equipment we can use to stop its spreading.

Abstract
Objectives: To review the main clinical, radiological and treatment aspects of patients with post-traumatic bifid mandibular condyles (BMC), to report a new case of BMC in a patient with history of trauma and to discuss the long term adaptive changes of the opposite condylar head. Methods: An electronic search in major medical databases was accomplished. Case series and case reports, prospective or retrospective cohort studies of patients with characteristics of traumatic BMC were included. Extracted data included demographic variables, clinical aspects, imagining examinations and treatment methods performed. Results: The systematic review included 60 patients with 72 post-traumatic BMC. The unilateral involvement (73.3%) and mediolateral condylar orientation (75%) were the most common types of post-traumatic BMC described. Most of the patients were symptomatic, with ankylosis (60%), limitation in mandibular movements (55%) and facial asymmetry (41.6%) being the most common clinical signs. Conclusion: The presence of the post-traumatic BMC is accompanied by important clinical signs, a correct and an early evaluation being essential for an optimal treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to reveal the frequency between cleft lip/palate and leukemia in pediatric patients by a systematic analysis of the current literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS Electronic search on three database (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane) was carried out using the following keywords: cleft lip, cleft palate, facial cleft, oral cleft, orofacial cleft, leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, lymphoma. Studies published until March 2020 reporting an association between leukemia and cleft lip/palate (CL/P) were included in our research. RESULTS Five articles (2 case-controls, 3 cohorts), met the inclusion criteria. Case-control studies involved 268 patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and 177 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), of which 9 patients had CL/P. The cohorts studies involved 10 patients with ALL, of which 6 patients with CL/P, 2 patients with cleft palate and 1 patient with cleft lip and palate. CONCLUSION This research was able to indicate a limited evidence of the association between CL/P and leukemia. In order to draw a clear conclusion, studies with larger cohorts are needed to establish this correlation.

Abstract
Nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HA) is a material with multiple uses due to its biocompatibility and its resemblance to the nonorganic bone structure. It is used in various dental domains such as implantology, surgery, periodontology, esthetics and prevention. The aim of this study is to provide a wide understanding of nano-HA and to promote treatments based on nanomaterials in dentistry. A search in two data bases, Scopus, and PubMED, was conducted over a 5 years period. We chose a 5 years period because this revealed the most recent published studies with the key words 'nano-HA' and 'dentistry'. A number of 32 studies were included in this systematic review. In implantology the main use of nano-HA was as a coating material for titanium implants and its effect was assessed in the matter of osteointegration and inflammatory response as well as antibacterial activity. In tissue engineering the use of nano-HA was directed to surgery and periodontology and this material was assessed mainly as a grafting material. In esthetics and prevention its use was mainly focused on dentinal hypersensitivity treatment, remineralizing potential and as bleaching co-agent. Nano-HA is a relatively novel material with outstanding physical, chemical, mechanical and biological properties that makes it suitable for multiple interventions. It outperformed most of the classic materials used in implantology and surgery but it should be further investigated for bone engineering and caries prevention therapy.

Abstract
Background and aims The principles of biomechanics comprise all the interactions between the body (tissues) and the forces acting upon it (directly or via different medical devices). Besides the mechanical aspects, the tissues response is also studied. Understanding and applying these principles is vital for the researchers in the field of oral implantology, but they must be equally known by the practitioners. From the planning stages to the final prosthetic restoration, they are involved in each and every aspect. Ignoring them inevitably leads to failure. Methods The first part of this paper includes a review of our current research in oral implantology (mechanical, digital and biological testing), while the second part includes a review of the available literature on certain biomechanical aspects and their implications in everyday practice. Results Our research opens new study directions and provides increased chances of success for dental implant therapy. The practical aspects of our findings, combined with the available literature (from the basic principles described more than 40 years ago to the most recent studies and technologies) can serve as a guide to practitioners for increasing their success rate. Conclusion While no therapy is without failure risk, a good understanding of the biomechanics involved in oral implantology can lead to higher success rates in implant supported prosthetic restorations.

Abstract
Introduction In recent years a link between periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases has been proposed. Oxidative stress has been found to be involved in their pathophysiology. Objectives The aim of this study was to demonstrate that a wire ligature placed around the first mandibular molars of the rat causes inflammation in the periodontium and lipid deposits in the aorta, via oxidative stress. Methods Twenty male Wistar rats were divided randomly into two groups of 10: Control group and Periodontitis group. An orthodontic wire ligature was placed around the cervix of the first mandibular molar and was kept in place for 4 weeks. Clinical attachment loss was determined to assess the gingival recession. Aorta was harvested after 4 weeks and the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the aorta tissue homogenate were determined. Lipid deposits were evaluated using Oil Red staining and immunofluorescence under confocal microscopy. Total lipid deposits in the aorta were assessed using a computer morphometry system. Results Significant gingival recession was observed in the Periodontitis group in comparison with the Control group. Increased MDA levels were present in the aorta in the ligatured rats in comparison with the Control group. Significant lipid deposits were observed in the aorta of the Periodontitis group as opposed to the Control group. Conclusions The affixing of an orthodontic wire ligature produces gingival recession, increased oxidative stress and lipid deposits in the rat descending aorta.

Abstract
Objectives:The aim of this CBCT study was to evaluate the postoperative volume changes of the rhinosinusal airway space, maxillary sinuses and nasal fossa, that occur after Le Fort I osteotomy, using individual segmentation of 3D virtual models. Material and methods:A number of 16 patients (with Class II and Class III malocclusions) who underwent a CBCT examination for orthognathic surgery at six month-interval between preoperative and postoperative evaluations were included. Patients with thickening of the sinus mucosa, craniofacial syndromes, maxillofacial trauma, rhinoplasty or other maxillofacial pathological conditions were excluded from the study. Individual segmentation of airway volumes was performed by the ITK-SNAP 2.0 software. Paired student t-test was used for the statistical examination of volume changes and Pearson's test for the assessment of intra-rate correlation. Outcomes:A statistically significant decrease in the rhinosinusal volume in Class II (9.36±3.43 cm3) and Class III malocclusions (3.65±2.96 cm3) was found after Le Fort I osteotomy. A decrease in volume was also found for maxillary sinuses (5.63±1.52 cm3 for Class II and 6.72±4.5 cm3 for Class III malocclusion). Nasal fossa decreased in volume (3.79±3.8 cm3) in Class II malocclusion patients and increased (3.07±2.39 cm3) in Class III malocclusion patients. The Pearson correlation revealed a high intra-rate agreement of measurements. Conclusion:Le Fort I osteotomy modifies the postoperative volume of rhinosinusal aerial spaces and individual segmentation on CBCT images is a useful tool to analyze the changes.

Abstract
Background: Once inserted and osseointegrated, dental implants become ankylosed, which makes them immobile with respect to the alveolar bone. The present paper describes the development of a new and original implant design which replicates the 3D physiological mobility of natural teeth. The first phase of the test followed the resistance of the implant to mechanical stress as well as the behavior of the surrounding bone. Modifications to the design were made after the first set of results. In the second stage, mechanical tests in conjunction with finite element analysis were performed to test the improved implant design. Methods: In order to test the new concept, 6 titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) implants were produced (milling). The implants were fitted into the dynamic testing device. The initial mobility was measured for each implant as well as their mobility after several test cycles. In the second stage, 10 implants with the modified design were produced. The testing protocol included mechanical testing and finite element analysis. Results: The initial testing protocol was applied almost entirely successfully. Premature fracturing of some implants and fitting blocks occurred and the testing protocol was readjusted. The issues in the initial test helped design the final testing protocol and the new implants with improved mechanical performance. Conclusion: The new prototype proved the efficiency of the concept. The initial tests pointed out the need for design improvement and the following tests validated the concept.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the microscopic structure of soft tissue covering titanium plates and screws used in jaw surgery (mandible fracture and orthognathic surgery), after a minimum period of 12 months from insertion, and to quantify the presence of any metallic particles. Periosteum covering the osteosynthesis plates was removed from 20 patients and examined by light microscopy in order to assess the cell morphological changes and the possibility of metal particles presence in the soft tissue. Local signs of tissue toxicity or inflammation were taken into consideration when evaluating the routine removal of titanium maxillofacial miniplates. No signs of screw loosening or acute inflammation were detected on the osteosynthesis site, but de-coloration of the periosteum was seen, and metallic particles were observed to have migrated into the soft tissues. Even if the titanium is well-tolerated by the human body in time, without severe local or general complications, our findings suggest that plate removal should be considered after bone healing has occurred.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study is to evaluate the early and long-term postoperative dimensional changes of the muscles of the mandible in patients with orthognathic surgery for class II and class III malocclusions by using ultrasonography (US). MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-six patients who underwent bimaxillary orthognathic surgery for class II or class III malocclusions (14 and 12 patients, respectively) were ultrasonographically examined. The length, width, and cross-sectional area of the masseter and suprahyoid muscles were measured at three different time points: T0 (preoperatively), T1 (early postoperatively at 1 month after the surgery), and T2 (late postoperatively at 9 months). A repeated measures ANOVA was used to calculate statistically significant dimensional changes of the mandibular muscles. RESULTS Statistically significant dimensional changes were found postoperatively in class II malocclusion patients only. The digastric muscle showed higher values for the length and lower values for the width (p < .05) at T1. The geniohyoid muscles were higher in length at T1 and lower in cross-sectional area (CSA) (p < .05) at T2. A decreased measured length and an increased measured width were found in case of the mylohyoid muscle (p < .05) at T2. The early and long-term postoperative dimensional changes of the masseter muscle were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS The mandibular muscles showed a variable adaptive response to the orthognathic surgery. US should be considered for the long-term follow-up of muscular dimensional changes in class II malocclusion patients. CLINICAL RELEVANCE From a clinical perspective, US is a reliable, non-invasive, and widely available method, which allows monitoring the postoperative muscular changes occurring in class II malocclusion patients.

Abstract
Suppurative head and neck infections of odontogenic origin are the most frequent type of head and neck infections. According to the literature, 7-10% of all antibiotics are currently prescribed for their treatment. Since penicillin was invented, the overall antibiotic sensitivity and resistance pattern of the isolated pathogenic microflora has continuously changed. The response of microorganisms to antibiotics and the development of resistance to their action is a purely evolutive process characterized by genetic mutations, acquisition of genetic material or alteration of gene expression and metabolic adaptations. All this makes challenging and difficult the correct choice of empirical antibiotic treatment for head and neck space infections even today. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the literature and to evidence the most frequent locations of odontogenic head and neck infections, the dominant pathogenic microbial flora, the genetic mutations and metabolic changes necessary for bacteria in order to aquire antibiotic resistance and as well its susceptibility and resistance to common antibiotics. We also aimed to highlight the possible changes in bacterial resistance to antibiotics over time, and to assess whether or not there is a need for fundamental changes in the empirical antibiotic treatment of these infections and show which these would be.

Abstract
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have become known for the treatment of gastric-acid related disorders. Similar to any other drugs, PPIs have possible adverse reactions, being associated with bone fractures, infections, kidney disease, mineral deficiency, dementia, and pneumonia. Multiple analyses have stated that PPIs therapy may affect bone regeneration and osseointegration process, causing an increased risk of bone fracture, deterioration of bone metabolism and impaired bone healing. In this review, we emphasized the current literature regarding the influence of proton pump inhibitors in the bone regeneration process. Results from the studies suggest a link between PPIs intake and bone regeneration, but several concerns are raised regarding inadequate recipient bone, surgical trauma, limitations on the titanium surface, comorbidities or interference with other pharmacological agents. Further studies are needed to determine whether the impaired bone regeneration process is due to PPI or coexisting factors.

Abstract
Bone is a complex tissue with unique properties such as high strength and regeneration capabilities while carrying out multiple functions. Bone regeneration occurs both in physiological situations (bone turnover) and in pathological situations (e.g. fractures), being performed by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. If this process is inadequate, fracture nonunion or aseptic loosening of implants occurs and requires a complex treatment. Exogenous factors are currently used to increase bone regeneration process when needed, such as bisphosphonates and vitamin D, but limitations do exist. Cannabinoid system has been shown to have positive effects on bone metabolism. Cannabinoids at bone level mainly act on two receptors called CB-1 and CB-2, but GPR55, GPR119, TPRV1, TPRV4 receptors may also be involved. The CB-2 receptors are found in bone cells at higher levels compared to other receptors. Endocannabinods represented by anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol, can stimulate osteoblast formation, bone formation and osteoclast activity. CB-2 agonists including HU-308, HU-433, JWH133, and JWH015 can stimulate osteoblast proliferation and activity, while CB-2 antagonists such as AM630 and SR144528 can inhibit osteoclast differentiation and function. CB-1 antagonist AM251 has been shown to inhibit osteoclast differentiation and activity, while GPR55 antagonist cannabidiol increases osteoblast activity and decreases osteoclast function. An optimal correlation of dose, duration, moment of action, and affinity can lead to an increased bone regeneration capacity, with important benefits in many pathological situations which involve bone tissue. As adverse reactions of cannabinoids have not been described in patients under controlled medication, cannabinoids can represent future treatment for bone regeneration.
