A Methodology to Measure Glucose Metabolism by Quantitative Analysis of PET Images

Positron emission tomography (PET) with F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) tracer is the standard clinical technique to measure myocardial and vessel metabolism and viability and to investigate the metabolic syndrome associated with cardiovascular diseases. The quantitative analysis of PET images allows one to study the cardiovascular physiological processes, by extracting quantitative parameters from the analysis of the tracer kinetic. Here, we propose a new methodology to quantify and evaluate the evolution of glucose metabolism inside the myocardium and the large vascular structures over time. We merge and analyze PET and CT cardiac images, extracting different volumes of interest (VOI) and performing quantitative measurements. To validate it, we apply the methodology to merge images of the aorta vessel for patients affected by metabolic syndrome. The application of the proposed approach to the use case reveals a correlation between administered drugs and metabolic syndrome, measuring the glucose metabolic rate (MRGlu) in both the myocardium and aorta. The proposed methodology can be used to evaluate some cardiovascular risk indexes of diabetic patients, too. The proposed methodology can also be deployed to analyze other application domains.

Review of cardiovascular imaging in the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology 2022: positron emission tomography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance

In 2022, the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology® published many excellent original research articles and editorials focusing on imaging in patients with cardiovascular disease. In this review of 2022, we summarize a selection of articles to provide a concise recap of major advancements in the field. In the first part of this 2-part series, we addressed publications pertaining to single-photon emission computed tomography. In this second part, we focus on positron emission tomography, cardiac computed tomography, and cardiac magnetic resonance. We specifically review advances in imaging of non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, cardio-oncology, infectious disease cardiac manifestations, atrial fibrillation, detection and prognostication of atherosclerosis, and technical improvements in the field. We hope that this review will be useful to readers as a reminder to articles they have seen during the year as well as ones they have missed.

Review of cardiovascular imaging in the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology 2022: single photon emission computed tomography

In this review, we will summarize a selection of articles on single-photon emission computed tomography published in the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology in 2022. The aim of this review is to concisely recap major advancements in the field to provide the reader a glimpse of the research published in the journal over the last year. This review will place emphasis on myocardial perfusion imaging using single-photon emission computed tomography summarizing advances in the field including in prognosis, non-perfusion variables, attenuation compensation, machine learning and camera design. It will also review nuclear imaging advances in amyloidosis, left ventricular mechanical dyssynchrony, cardiac innervation, and lung perfusion. We encourage interested readers to go back to the original articles, and editorials, for a comprehensive read as necessary but hope that this yearly review will be helpful in reminding readers of articles they have seen and attracting their attentions to ones they have missed.

Although the year 2020 was different from other years in many respects, the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology published excellent articles pertaining to imaging in patients with cardiovascular disease due to the dedication of the investigators in our field all over the world. In this review, we will summarize a selection of these articles to provide a concise review of the main advancements that have recently occurred in the field and provide the reader with an opportunity to review a wide selection of articles. We will focus on publications dealing with positron emission tomography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance and hope that you will find this review helpful.

Ten things to know about ten imaging studies: A preventive cardiology perspective ("ASPC top ten imaging")

Knowing the patient's current cardiovascular disease (CVD) status, as well as the patient's current and future CVD risk, helps the clinician make more informed patient-centered management recommendations towards the goal of preventing future CVD events. Imaging tests that can assist the clinician with the diagnosis and prognosis of CVD include imaging studies of the heart and vascular system, as well as imaging studies of other body organs applicable to CVD risk. The American Society for Preventive Cardiology (ASPC) has published "Ten Things to Know About Ten Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors." Similarly, this "ASPC Top Ten Imaging" summarizes ten things to know about ten imaging studies related to assessing CVD and CVD risk, listed in tabular form. The ten imaging studies herein include: (1) coronary artery calcium imaging (CAC), (2) coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), (3) cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography), (4) nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI), (5) cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), (6) cardiac catheterization [with or without intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) or coronary optical coherence tomography (OCT)], (7) dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) body composition, (8) hepatic imaging [ultrasound of liver, vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE), CT, MRI proton density fat fraction (PDFF), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS)], (9) peripheral artery / endothelial function imaging (e.g., carotid ultrasound, peripheral doppler imaging, ultrasound flow-mediated dilation, other tests of endothelial function and peripheral vascular imaging) and (10) images of other body organs applicable to preventive cardiology (brain, kidney, ovary). Many cardiologists perform cardiovascular-related imaging. Many non-cardiologists perform applicable non-cardiovascular imaging. Cardiologists and non-cardiologists alike may benefit from a working knowledge of imaging studies applicable to the diagnosis and prognosis of CVD and CVD risk - both important in preventive cardiology.
