Abstract
Obesity represents a significant global public health concern. The excessive accumulation of abdominal adipose tissue is often implicated in the development of metabolic complications associated with obesity. Our study aimed to investigate the impact of particular deposits of abdominal adipose tissue on the occurrence of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism complications. We established cut-off points for visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and the VAT/SAT ratio at which selected metabolic complications of obesity-related diseases (disorders of carbohydrate and/or lipid metabolism) occur. We conducted an observational study involving 91 subjects with first- and second-degree obesity, accounting for gender differences. Anthropometric measurements were taken, body composition analysis (BIA) was conducted, and biochemical determinations were made. Our findings suggest that commonly used parameters for assessing early metabolic risk, such as BMI or waist circumference, may overlook the significant factor of body fat distribution, as well as gender differences. Both visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue were found to be important in estimating metabolic risk. We identified the cut-off points in women in terms of their elevated fasting glucose levels and the presence of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR: homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance) based on SAT, VAT, and the VAT/SAT ratio. In men, cut-off points were determined for the presence of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) based on VAT and the VAT/SAT ratio. However, the results regarding lipid disorders were inconclusive, necessitating further investigation of a larger population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Being overweight or obese has become a serious public health concern, and accurate assessment of body composition is particularly important. More precise indicators of body fat composition include visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass and total body fat percentage (TBF%). Study objectives included examining the relationships between abdominal fat mass, measured by quantitative computed tomography (QCT), and the whole-body and regional fat masses, measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), as well as to derive equations for the prediction of TBF% using data obtained from multiple QCT slices. METHODS Whole-body and regional fat percentage were quantified using DXA in Chinese males (n = 68) and females (n = 71) between the ages of 24 and 88. All the participants also underwent abdominal QCT measurement, and their VAT mass and visceral fat volume (VFV) were assessed using QCT and DXA, respectively. RESULTS DXA-derived TBF% closely correlated with QCT abdominal fat percentage (r = 0.89-0.93 in men and 0.76-0.88 in women). Stepwise regression showed that single-slice QCT data were the best predictors of DXA-derived TBF%, DXA android fat percentage and DXA gynoid fat percentage. Cross-validation analysis showed that TBF% and android fat percentage could be accurately predicted using QCT data in both sexes. There were close correlations between QCT-derived and DXA-derived VFV (r = 0.97 in men and 0.93 in women). CONCLUSION Clinicians can assess the TBF% and android and gynoid fat percentages of Chinese women and men by analysing existing abdominal CT-derived data using the QCT technique.

Abstract
This review sought to meta-analyze previous research observing the effects of fat mass distribution on the fall risk among people with obesity. The literature search yielded five qualified studies enrolling 1218 participants (650 with android vs. 568 with gynoid). The outcome variables included the annual fall prevalence (primary outcome) and the center of pressure (COP) movement measurements during a posturography test (secondary) among people with android or gynoid obesity. Meta-analyses were conducted using the inverse variance weighted random-effects model. The odds ratio (OR) and standardized mean difference (SMD) were used as the effect size for the primary and secondary variables, respectively. The results revealed that more people with android obesity fall annually than their gynoid obesity counterparts (OR = 1.78 [1.34, 2.37], p < 0.0001). People with android obesity also exhibited significantly faster overall COP velocity (SMD = 0.49 [0.11, 0.88], p = 0.01) during standing compared to individuals with gynoid obesity. Our results indicated that people with android obesity could have a greater fall risk than those with gynoid obesity. Given the limited number of studies included, more well-designed and quality work is desired to further clarify how fat mass distribution alters the fall risk among people with obesity. A standardized approach to quantify the fat mass distribution (android vs. gynoid) is imperatively needed for people with obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of fat and lean mass in specific regions with all-cause and cardiovascular-related mortality. DESIGN Population based cohort study. SETTING US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003-2006 and 2011-2018). PARTICIPANTS 22 652 US adults aged 20 years or older. EXPOSURES Fat and lean mass in specific regions obtained from the whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES All-cause and cardiovascular-related mortality. RESULTS During a median of 83 months of follow-up, 1432 deaths were identified. Associations between body composition metrics and mortality risks were evident above specific thresholds. For all-cause mortality, Android fat mass showed elevated HRs above 2.46 kg (HR: 1.17, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.34), while Android lean mass (ALM) had similar trends above 2.75 kg (HR: 1.17, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.33), and Android total mass above 5.75 kg (HR: 1.08, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.16). Conversely, lower HRs were observed below certain thresholds: Gynoid fat mass (GFM) below 3.71 kg (HR: 0.72, 95% CI 0.56 to 0.93), Gynoid lean mass below 6.44 kg (HR: 0.77, 95% CI 0.64 to 0.92), and Gynoid total mass below 11.78 kg (HR: 0.76, 95% CI 0.70 to 0.84). Notably, below 0.722 kg, the HR of visceral adipose tissue mass (VATM) was 1.25 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.48) for all-cause mortality, and above 3.18 kg, the HR of total abdominal fat mass was 2.41 (95% CI 1.15 to 5.05). Cardiovascular-related mortality exhibited associations as well, particularly for Android fat mass (AFM) above 1.78 kg (HR: 1.22, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.47) and below 7.16 kg (HR: 0.50, 95% CI 0.36 to 0.69). HRs varied for Gynoid total mass below and above 10.98 kg (HRs: 0.70, 95% CI 0.54 to 0.93, and 1.12, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.23). Android per cent fat, subcutaneous fat mass (SFM), AFM/GFM, and VATM/SFM were not statistically associated with all-cause mortality. Android per cent fat, Gynoid per cent fat, AFM/GFM, and VATM/SFM were not statistically associated with cardiovascular-related mortality. Conicity index showed that the ALM/GLM had the highest performance for all-cause and cardiovascular-related mortality with AUCs of 0.785, and 0.746, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The relationship between fat or lean mass and all-cause mortality varies by region. Fat mass was positively correlated with cardiovascular mortality, regardless of the region in which they located. ALM/GLM might be a better predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular-related mortality than other body components or body mass index.

Abstract
Objectives Evidence of the relationship between android fat mass and gynoid fat mass with the mortality prediction is still limited. Current study analyzed the NHANES database to investigate the relationship between android fat mass, gynoid fat mass and CVD, with all-cause mortality. Method The study subjects were NHANES participants over 20 years old, two indicators of regional body composition, android fat and gynoid fat were measured by Dual Energy x-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). The other various covariates data obtained from the NHANES questionnaire and laboratory measurements, including age, gender, education, race/ethnicity, uric acid, total serum cholesterol, albumin, Vitamin C, folate, alcohol drinking, smoking status, history of diabetes, and hypertension. Mortality status was ascertained from a linked mortality file prepared by the National Center for Health Statistics. The study population was divided quartiles based on the distribution of android fat mass and gynoid fat mass. The relationship between these two indicators with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality was investigated by using Cox regression. The covariates age, gender, smoking status, drinking status, history of diabetes, and history of hypertension were stratified. Results In the fully adjusted model, Q3 had the lowest HR in android fat mass and gynoid fat mass. When examining the relationship between android fat mass and CVD mortality, current smokers and drinkers had the lowest CVD risk in Q2 [smoking: 0.21 (0.08, 0.52), drinking: 0.14 (0.04, 0.50)]. In diabetic patients, compared with Q1, other groups with increased android fat mass can significantly reduce the risk of CVD [Q4: 0.17 (0.04, 0.75), Q3: 0.18 (0.03, 1.09), Q2: 0.27 (0.09, 0.83)]. In ≥60 years old and female, the greater the gynoid fat mass, the smaller the HR of all-cause mortality [Q4 for ≥60 years old: 0.57 (0.33, 0.96), Q4 for female: 0.37 (0.23, 0.58)]. People <60 years old had a lower risk of all-cause mortality with gynoid fat mass in Q3 than those ≥60 years old [<60 years: 0.50 (0.27, 0.91), ≥60 years: 0.65 (0.45, 0.95)]. Among subjects without hypertension, the group with the largest android fat mass had the lowest risk of CVD mortality, and the group with the largest gynoid fat mass had the lowest risk of all-cause mortality [Android fat mass: 0.36 (0.16, 0.81), gynoid fat mass: 0.57 (0.39, 0.85)]. Conclusion Moderate android fat mass and gynoid fat mass (Q3) had the most protective effect. Smokers and drinkers need to control their body fat. Being too thin is harmful to people with diabetes. Increased gynoid fat mass is a protective factor for all-cause mortality in older adults and females. Young people's gynoid fat mass is more protective in the moderate range than older people's. If no high blood pressure exists, people with more android and gynoid fat mass have a lower risk of CVD or all-cause mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the correlation between body components with insulin resistance (IR) and islet beta cell function in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) or pre-diabetes mellitus (pre-DM) and to explore whether this correlation differs in males and females. METHODS 111 newly diagnosed diabetic or pre-diabetic patients were recruited in this cross-sectional study. 75g oral glucose tolerance test was used to determine the diagnosis of DM or pre-DM. Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and glucose disposition index (DI30) was calculated to assess IR and islet beta cell function, respectively. Whole-body and regional lean mass (LM) and fat mass (FM) were obtained by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Partial correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were used to determine the associations between body composition, IR, and islet beta cell function. RESULTS More body fat and appendicular fat was observed in female patients than in male, though with similar BMI. Legs fat % was negatively correlated with HOMA-IR, whereas legs lean % was positively associated with HOMA-IR in females (r = -0.673, p = 0.017; r =0.664, p = 0.018, respectively). The regression analysis showed that legs LM was positively correlated with HOMA-IR in females. However, in male patients, android FM was positively correlated with HOMA-IR (r = 0.462, p = 0.007), and trunk LM was negatively associated with DI30 (r = -0.458, p = 0.007). Nevertheless, no significant correlation was observed between body composition and islet beta cell function in female patients. CONCLUSION Android FM was positively correlated with IR only in male patients but not in females. Besides, relative legs fat and LM were independently associated with IR in female patients but not in males. Further studies are needed to explore the underlying mechanism.

Abstract
AbstractThis study aims to investigate the association between trajectories of the cognition and body mass index (BMI) among Chinese middle and old-aged adults. A total of 5693 adults (age 45 +) whose cognitive score is higher than average at the baseline were included from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS:2011–2015). Cognitive function was measured by Mini-mental state examination (MMSE) in Chinese version. The Group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) was adopted to identify the potential heterogeneity of longitudinal changes over the past 5 years and to investigate the relationship between baseline BMI and trajectories of cognitive function. Three trajectories were identified in results: the slow decline (37.92%), the rapid decline (6.71%) and the stable function (55.37%). After controlling for other variables, underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2) was associated with the rapid and slow decline trajectories. Obesity (BMI > 28 kg/m2) was associated with the slow decline trajectory. High-risk people of cognitive decline can be screened by measuring BMI.

Abstract
Background: Little is known about sex differences in the risk of type 2 diabetes (DM2) development related to body fat depot. The main aim of this study was to assess sex-specific differences in the prevalence of diabetes in the relation to body mass, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and calculated body fat percentage (BF), adjusted by physical activity, in younger and older hypertensive adults. Subjects/Methods: The survey enrolled 12,289 adult hypertensive outpatients with body weight, height, and WC reported by their physicians across Poland. Prevalence of diabetes was plotted against body mass, BMI, WC, and calculated BF and adjusted by the self-reported level of physical activity. Results: In our cohort, younger women (<60 years) with BMI < 25.0 kg/m2 had lower adjusted prevalence of diabetes than corresponding men (3.4% vs. 6.5%), while among older (≥60 years) with BMI < 25.0 kg/m2, the prevalence of diabetes was greater in women than in men (19.4% vs. 11.2%). A 25% probability of diabetes was observed for younger women with lower BMI than younger men (32.1 kg/m2 and 35.3 kg/m2, respectively) and WC (100.7 cm and 116.1 cm, respectively) but greater BF (45.5% and 38.9%, respectively). The corresponding differences in BMI and WC in older ones were much smaller (27.6 kg/m2 and 27.2 kg/m2, respectively; 83.7 cm and 85.6 cm, respectively), but not for BF (40.7% and 30.1%, respectively). A doubling of diabetes probability (from 25% to 50%), adjusted by physical activity, was attributable to the lower increase in BMI and WC and BF in women than in men (6.3 vs. 9.8 kg/m2, 25.0 vs. 36.1 cm, and 6.5 vs. 10.8%, for younger, and 8.1 vs. 11.3 kg/m2, 26.2 vs. 73.2 cm and 8.8 vs. 13.3%, for older). Conclusions: This study shows a lower probability of diabetes in younger women than younger men with normal weight BMI ranges, adjusted to physical activity. This probability is greater for hypertensive women, regardless of age, due to the increase in BMI/WC and BF values adjusted for physical activity.

Abstract
Background Ketogenic diets have been used to treat both obesity and neurological disorders, including epilepsy and more recently Alzheimer’s disease (AD), likely due to favorable effects on both central and peripheral metabolism. Improvements in body composition have also been reported; however, it is unclear if diet-induced changes in adiposity are related to improvements in AD and related neuropathology. Purpose We examined the effects of a Modified Mediterranean Ketogenic (MMK) diet vs. an American Heart Association (AHA) diet on body weight, body composition, and body fat distribution and their association with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers in older adults at risk for AD. Methods Twenty adults (mean age: 64.3 ± 6.3 years, 35% Black, 75% female) were randomly assigned to a crossover trial starting with either the MMK or AHA diet for 6 weeks, followed by a 6-week washout and then the opposite diet for 6 weeks. At baseline and after each diet adiposity was assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and CSF biomarkers were measured. Linear mixed effect models were used to examine the effect of diet on adiposity. Spearman correlations were examined to assess associations between adiposity and CSF biomarkers. Results At baseline there was a high prevalence of overweight/obesity and central adiposity, and higher visceral fat and lower peripheral fat were associated with an adverse CSF biomarker profile. The MMK and AHA diets led to similar improvements in body composition and body fat distribution. Significant correlations were found between changes in adiposity and changes in CSF biomarkers (r’s = 0.63–0.92, p’s < 0.05), with notable differences by diet. Decreases in body fat on the MMK diet were related to changes in Aβ biomarkers, whereas decreases in body fat on the AHA diet were related to changes in tau biomarkers and cholinesterase activity. Interestingly, increases in CSF Aβ on the MMK diet occurred in those with less fat loss. Conclusion An MMK diet leads to favorable changes in body composition, body fat distribution, and CSF biomarkers. Our data suggest that modest weight loss that maximizes visceral fat loss and preserves peripheral fat, may have the greatest impact on brain health. Abstract
Background The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and the incisionless endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) weight loss procedures require further investigation of their efficacy, safety and patient-centered outcomes in the Australian setting. Methods The aim was to examine the 6- and 12-month weight loss efficacy, safety, and weight-related quality of life (QoL) of adults with obesity who received the ESG or LSG bariatric procedure with 12+ months of adjuvant multidisciplinary pre- and postprocedural support. Data were from a two-arm prospective cohort study that followed patients from baseline to 12-months postprocedure from a medical center in Queensland. Percent excess weight loss (%EWL) was the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes were body composition (fat mass, fat-free mass, android:gynoid ratio, bone mineral content) via dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, weight-related QoL, lipid, glycemic, and hepatic biochemistry, and adverse events. Results 16 ESG (19% attrition; 81.2% female; aged:41.4 (SD: 10.4) years; BMI: 35.5 (SD: 5.2) kg/m2) and 45 LSG (9% attrition; 84.4% female; aged:40.4 (SD: 9.0) years; BMI: 40.7 (SD: 5.6) kg/m2) participants were recruited. At 12-months postprocedure, ESG %EWL was 57% (SD: 32%; p < 0.01) and LSG %EWL was 79% (SD: 24%; p < 0.001). ESG and LSG cohorts improved QoL (19.8% in ESG [p > 0.05]; 48.1% in LSG [p < 0.05]), liver function (AST: − 4.4 U/L in ESG [p < 0.05]; − 2.7 U/L in LSG [p < 0.05]), HbA1c (− 0.5% in ESG [p < 0.05]; − 0.1% in LSG [p < 0.05]) and triglycerides (− 0.6 mmol/L in ESG [p > 0.05]; − 0.4 mmol/L in LSG [P < 0.05]) at 12-months. Both cohorts reduced fat mass (p < 0.05). The ESG maintained but LSG decreased fat-free mass at 6-months (p < 0.05); and both cohorts lost fat-free mass at 12-months (p < 0.05). There were no adverse events directly related to the procedure. The ESG reported 25% mild-moderate adverse events possibly related to the procedure, and the LSG reported 27% mild-severe adverse events possibly related to the procedure. Conclusions In this setting, the ESG and LSG were safe and effective weight loss treatments for obese adults alongside multidisciplinary support. Patients who elected the ESG maintained fat-free mass at 6-months but both cohorts lost fat-free mass at 12-months postprocedure. Patients who elected the LSG had large and significant improvements to weight-related quality of life. Further well-powered studies are required to confirm these findings. Abstract
We aimed to comprehensively evaluate the association of body composition with fracture risk using longitudinal data from a Swedish cohort of 44,366 women and men (mean age of 70 years) and a subcohort of 5022 women. We estimated hazard ratios (HRs) of fracture for baseline body mass index (BMI), BMI change during the prior 12 and 18 years, baseline waist-to-height ratio, total and regional distribution of fat and lean mass, with and without areal bone mineral density (BMD) adjustment. During follow-up (median 8.7 years), 7290 individuals sustained a fracture, including 4279 fragility fractures, of which 1813 were hip fractures. Higher baseline BMI and prior gain in BMI were inversely associated with all types of fracture. Lower fracture rate with higher baseline BMI was seen within every category of prior BMI change, whereas higher prior BMI gain conferred a lower rate of fracture within those with normal baseline BMI. Each standard deviation (SD) higher baseline waist-to-height ratio, after adjustment for BMI, was associated with higher rates of hip fracture in both women and men (HR 1.12; 95% CI, 1.05-1.19). In the subcohort (median follow-up 10 years), higher baseline fat mass index (FMI) and appendicular lean mass index (LMI) showed fracture-protective effects. After BMD adjustment, higher baseline BMI, total LMI, FMI, and higher prior BMI gain were associated with higher fracture rate. Baseline fat distribution also was associated with fracture rate; a 1-SD higher android to gynoid fat mass ratio in prior BMI gainers was associated with BMD-adjusted HRs of 1.16 (95% CI, 1.05-1.28) for any fracture and 1.48 (95% CI, 1.16-1.89) for hip fracture. This pattern was not observed among prior BMI losers. These findings indicate that for optimal fracture prevention, low baseline BMI, prior BMI loss and high baseline central obesity should be avoided in both women and men. © 2021 The Authors. Abstract
Background To determine whether differences in body composition contribute to sex differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, we investigated the relationship between components of body composition and CVD mortality in healthy men and women. Methods and Results Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry body composition data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2004 and CVD mortality data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2014 were evaluated in 11 463 individuals 20 years of age and older. Individuals were divided into 4 body composition groups (low muscle mass-low fat mass-the referent; low muscle-high fat; high muscle-low fat, and high muscle-high fat), and adjusted competing risks analyses were performed for CVD versus non-CVD mortality. In women, high muscle/high fat mass was associated with a significantly lower adjusted CVD mortality rate (hazard ratio [HR], 0.58; 95% CI, 0.39-0.86; P=0.01), but high muscle/low fat mass was not. In men, both high muscle-high fat (HR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.53-1.04; P=0.08) and high muscle-low fat mass (HR, 0.40; 95% CI, 0.21-0.77; P=0.01) were associated with lower CVD. Further, in adjusted competing risks analyses stratified by sex, the CVD rate in women tends to significantly decrease as normalized total fat increase (total fat fourth quartile: HR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.34-0.94; P<0.03), whereas this is not noted in men. Conclusions Higher muscle mass is associated with lower CVD and mortality in men and women. However, in women, high fat, regardless of muscle mass level, appears to be associated with lower CVD mortality risk. This finding highlights the importance of muscle mass in healthy men and women for CVD risk prevention, while suggesting sexual dimorphism with respect to the CVD risk associated with fat mass.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether body fat distribution and physical fitness would be associated with risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in post-menopausal females. Android fat distribution were more likely to have altered total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), glycemic levels (GL) body fat percentage (%BF), and body mass index (BMI), and those with inadequate physical fitness showed clear alterations in TC, HDL-C, and TG. Gynoid fat distribution group fared better regarding CVD risk. In conclusion, adequate physical fitness demonstrates a protective factor against CVDs, with the greatest benefit to those with gynoid fat distribution.

Abstract
Background Body fat estimation allows measuring changes over time attributed to interventions and treatments in different settings such as hospitals, clinical practice, nursing homes and research. However, only few studies have compared different body fat estimation methods in older adults with inconsistent results. We estimated body fat percentage (%BF) and the level of agreement among dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and Durnin & Womersley’s skinfold eq. (SF) in older Brazilian adults aged 60 years and older from the Elderly Project Goiânia, Brazil. Methods The analytical sample comprised of 132 participants who had DXA data. The level of agreement for the %BF estimated by BIA, SF and DXA i.e. reference method, was examined using Bland and Altman’s and Lin’s plot. Results Overall, women had higher body mass index and %BF values measured by all three methods used. BIA and SF equation showed strong concordance to estimate body fat percentage in all participants (CCC = 0.857 and 0.861, respectively) and among women (CCC = 0.788 and 0.726, respectively) when compared to DXA. However, both methods underestimated body fat percentage in women and men with high body fat percentage. A strong level of agreement was observed between DXA and the anthropometric equation developed by Durnin & Womersley in men (CCC = 0.846), while BIA had a moderate concordance (CCC = 0.505) in this group. Conclusion The examined methods indicated different body fat estimates. However, the best agreement was observed between DXA and the anthropometric SF equation for men. Future research in older adults should develop new SF equations considering different ethnic groups.

Abstract
Objectives: This study examined the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and trajectories of cognitive decline among older Korean adults.Methods: Participants were a nationally representative sample of 5126 Korean adults aged 60 or older from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA: 2006-2014). The main outcome variable, cognitive function, was measured with the Korean Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE). According to the BMI values, respondents were divided into four groups at each wave: underweight (<18.5 kg/m2), healthy weight (18.5-22.9 kg/m2), overweight (23.0-24.9 kg/m2), and obese (≥25.0 kg/m2). Growth curve modeling was used to analyze the relationship of interest.Results: The growth curve modeling revealed that, regardless of BMI values, cognitive functioning declined as participants aged, and the rate of cognitive decline accelerated with age. After adjusting for all covariates, older Korean adults who were underweight displayed steeper declines in cognitive functioning, compared to those with a healthy weight. Conversely, overweight or obese older adults showed a much slower cognitive decline as they aged, after adjusting for covariates.Conclusion: Compared to people with a healthy BMI, people with a low BMI may be at risk for cognitive dysfunction, whereas a high BMI could function as a protective factor for cognitive dysfunction in older adulthood. Future research examining the mechanism for these trajectories are needed. Implications for research and clinical practice are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adipose tissue dysfunction has been implicated in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. However, the involvement of adipokines, particularly adiponectin, remains unclear. OBJECTIVE To compare serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of adiponectin, leptin and leptin-to-adiponectin ratio in patients within the spectrum of Alzheimer's disease and evaluate their relationship with classical biomarkers and their value as markers of progression. METHODS Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI, n = 71) and Alzheimer's dementia (AD, n = 53) subjects were consecutively recruited for serum and CSF adiponectin and leptin determination using an analytically validated commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Correlations were explored using adjusted Spearman's correlation coefficients. A logistic regression model and ROC analysis were performed to evaluate the staging predictive value of adipokines. RESULTS Serum adiponectin was 33% higher in AD when compared to MCI patients. Adiponectin CSF levels, similar in both groups, were positively correlated with Aβ42 and cognitive function, though only in women. The area under the ROC curve was 0.673 (95% CI:0.57-0.78) for serum adiponectin as predictor of dementia stage and the cut-off 10.85μg/ml maximized the sum of specificity (87%) and sensitivity (44%). CONCLUSION Although longitudinal studies are required, we hypothesize that higher serum adiponectin in AD patients constitutes a strategy to compensate possible central signaling defects. In addition, adiponectin might be specifically assigned to neuroprotective functions in women and eventually involved in the female-biased incidence of Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE Higher levels of fatty acids (FAs) in the de novo lipogenesis (DNL) pathway might be associated with higher levels of fat mass (FM), while limited evidence is available from the general population. We aimed to examine the associations between DNL-FAs and body fat and fat distribution in a general population of Chinese adults. METHODS This community-based prospective cohort study included 3,075 participants (68% women) aged 40-75 years in urban Guangzhou, China. We measured erythrocyte DNL-FAs composition (including C16:0, C16:1n-7, C18:0, and C18:1n-9) at baseline and %FM over the total body (TB), trunk, limbs, android (A) and gynoid (G) regions after 3.2 years and 6.3 years of follow-up, respectively. RESULTS Generally, higher proportions of individual erythrocyte DNL-FAs and their combined index were positively associated with adipose indices in the multivariable cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. The cross-sectional percentage mean differences in quartile 4 (vs. 1) of the DNL index were 3.43% (TB), 4.56% (trunk), and 2.67% (A/G ratio) (all P trends < 0.01). The corresponding values in longitudinal changes of adipose indices were 1.40% (TB), 1.78% (trunk), and 1.32% (A) (all P trends < 0.05). The above associations tended to be more pronounced in the trunk and android area than the limbs and gynoid area. CONCLUSIONS Erythrocyte DNL-FAs may contribute to an increase in total body fat in Chinese adults, particularly FM distributed in trunk and abdominal regions.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a resistance training program (RTP) in older overweight women (OOW) using two different types of elastic devices. METHODS This study was a randomized controlled trial with pre- and postintervention measures. Participants included OOW, aged 60-85 years, with no medical history of disease that would preclude them from engaging in physical exercise. Participants were randomly divided into the following groups: elastic tubes with handles group (ETG; n = 22), traditional elastic bands group ( n = 21), and control group (CG; n = 20). Exercise groups (EGs) performed the following supervised RTP: 8 weeks, twice weekly, six overall body exercises, and 3-4 sets of 10 repetitions at a rate of perceived exertion (RPE) of 7-9 on the OMNI-Resistance Exercise Scale of perceived exertion. The controls did not change their usual lifestyle. Outcome measures included body composition (BC; total and regional percentage of fat mass [FM] and fat-free mass [FFM]) and physical performance (PP; dynamic and isometric strength, flexibility, agility/dynamic balance, and endurance). RESULTS Both EGs exhibited significantly reduced FM in the upper limbs (ULs) and trunk and increased FFM in the UL, while the ETG exhibited a significantly increased trunk FFM. Both EGs improved in PP, and there were no intergroup differences. Trunk FM and FFM and meters walked differed significantly between the ETG and CG. The CG did not exhibit any significant changes. CONCLUSION Training with elastic devices at a moderate-high RPE produces short-term improvements in BC and PP in OOW.
