Abstract
OBJECTIVE This meta-analysis aims to analyze the relationship between serum vitamin D (VD) levels and Graves' disease (GD). METHODS We conducted a search for publications on VD and GD in the English language. Our search encompassed databases such as PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, covering publications available through August 2023. A meta-analysis was performed using Cochrane RevMan 5.4 software. The standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used for outcome calculation. We used R software to test for publication bias. RESULTS Twelve studies were selected, comprising 937 (22.4%) cases with GD and 3254 (77.6%) controls. The overall meta-analysis revealed that patients with GD are significantly more likely to have low VD levels (SMD = - 0.66; 95% CI: -1.05, - 0.27; p = 0.001) than those in the control group. Egger's test results indicated no publication bias (p = 0.0791). These studies exhibited a high degree of heterogeneity (chi-square = 205.86, p < 0.00001; I2 = 95%). Subgroup analysis was conducted based on assay method, geographic location, and mean age of the case group to explore the heterogeneity sources. Assay methods and geographic locations were identified as potential heterogeneity sources. Based on the mean age, there were no statistically significant differences found in the subgroup analysis of the included studies. CONCLUSION There is promising evidence that low serum VD levels may increase the risk of GD. Further rigorous and long-term trials are needed to explore the role of VD in the onset and treatment of GD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Maintaining muscle function throughout life is critical for healthy ageing. Although in vitro studies consistently indicate beneficial effects of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) on muscle function, findings from population-based studies remain inconclusive. We therefore aimed to examine the association between 25-OHD concentration and handgrip strength across a wide age range and assess potential modifying effects of age, sex and season. METHODS We analysed cross-sectional baseline data of 2576 eligible participants out of the first 3000 participants (recruited from March 2016 to March 2019) of the Rhineland Study, a community-based cohort study in Bonn, Germany. Multivariate linear regression models were used to assess the relation between 25-OHD levels and grip strength while adjusting for age, sex, education, smoking, season, body mass index, physical activity levels, osteoporosis and vitamin D supplementation. RESULTS Compared to participants with deficient 25-OHD levels (<30 nmol/L), grip strength was higher in those with inadequate (30 to <50 nmol/L) and adequate (≥50 to ≤125 nmol/L) levels (ßinadequate = 1.222, 95% CI: 0.377; 2.067, P = 0.005; ßadequate = 1.228, 95% CI: 0.437; 2.019, P = 0.002). Modelling on a continuous scale revealed grip strength to increase with higher 25-OHD levels up to ~100 nmol/L, after which the direction reversed (ßlinear = 0.505, 95% CI: 0.179; 0.830, P = 0.002; ßquadratic = -0.153, 95% CI: -0.269; -0.038, P = 0.009). Older adults showed weaker effects of 25-OHD levels on grip strength than younger adults (ß25OHDxAge = -0.309, 95% CI: -0.594; -0.024, P = 0.033). CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the importance of sufficient 25-OHD levels for optimal muscle function across the adult life span. However, vitamin D supplementation should be closely monitored to avoid detrimental effects.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate dentition status amongst community-dwelling older adults and its association with frailty and cognitive impairment. Methodology One thousand forty-seven community-dwelling older adults aged ≥65 years were surveyed in an epidemiologic population-based cohort study in Singapore between April 2015 and August 2016. Data on demographics, dentition status, chronic diseases, activities and instrumental activities on daily-living, cognition (age- and education-specific MMSE cut-offs), frailty (FRAIL scale), perceived health and functional status were collected. Multiple logistic regression was performed to examine the association between dentition, frailty and cognition. Results Mean age of participants was 71.2 ± 5.5 years. The prevalence of denture use was 70.7% and edentulism 7.9%. Compared to edentulousness, having teeth was associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment and higher odds of being robust or pre-frail. Denture-wearers compared with edentulous persons were less likely to be male, had higher education level and more likely be robust or pre-frail. Conclusion and implications There were significant associations between dentition status, frailty and cognition in our study where those with remining teeth and / or dentures had better overall outcomes. As oral health, frailty and cognitive impairments are all modifiable risk factors for healthy ageing, countries should consider population level screening for oral health, frailty and cognitive impairment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency have been shown to be prevalent in several populations, including in people who have a mental illness. Deficiency has been linked to specific mental health sequelae. Furthermore, deficiency may be perpetuated by medications routinely prescribed to people with severe mental illness. Therefore, symptoms of mental illness may be exacerbated by deficient levels of vitamin D, and treatments for mental illness may exacerbate deficiency. This study sought to determine the vitamin D levels of people hospitalized for a period longer than a year in an equatorial nation, Singapore. The inpatient population was then categorized according to levels to determine the need for supplementation. METHODS Total 25-hydroxy vitamin D in serum and plasma levels were tested in 403 individuals in long-term psychiatric wards. Blood serum and plasma levels were classified into three groups. Regression models were constructed to test the associations between levels and clinical covariates. RESULTS Forty (9.9%) people had vitamin D levels that were sufficient. A link was found between vitamin D levels and medications given for gastrointestinal illnesses (β -2.48, p = .014, 95%CI -4.46 to-0.51) and between vitamin D levels and length of stay (β -0.13, p = .027, 95%CI -0.24 to-0.01). No other relationships were statistically significant. DISCUSSION Despite its geographic location and opportunities for regular outdoor activity, vitamin D deficiency, and insufficiency are prevalent among people hospitalized for long periods of time in an equatorial nation. The level of deficiency is comparable to those observed in other settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in older adults and assess the association of MetS and adverse outcomes with handgrip strength (HGS), HGS/body weight (BWT), and HGS/body mass index (BMI). METHODS A cross-sectional population study in Singapore. Data were collected on demographics, HGS, Timed-Up and Go (TUG), fasting glucose, lipid profile, blood pressure, waist circumference, frailty status, and cognition in 722 older adults ≥65 years old. MetS was defined using the Modified ATP III for Asians where at least three of the following conditions must be fulfilled, central obesity, high blood glucose (or diagnosed diabetes mellitus), high blood pressure (or diagnosed hypertension), low high-density lipoprotein, and high triglycerides. The waist circumference in the Modified ATP III for Asians is ≥90 cm for males or ≥80 cm for females. HGS and HGS normalized by BWT or BMI were used for the association. RESULTS The prevalence of MetS in older adults was 41.0%, and those ≥85 years old 50.0%. The prevalence was higher in females ≥70 years old, with 8 in 10 females ≥85 years having MetS. After adjusting for age, years of education, physical exercise, as well as history of smoking and alcohol consumption, higher HGS normalized by BWT or BMI was significantly associated with lower odds of having MetS (OR: 0.51,95% CI 0.43-0.61, p<0.01) and (OR: 0.13, 95% CI 0.07-0.24, p<0.01). CONCLUSION Almost 1 in 2 older adults had MetS, with the prevalence in females much higher than that in males over 70 years old. Our findings suggest that both HGS/BWT and HGS/BMI had a significant negative association with MetS, its components, and adverse effects. Further studies are needed to validate the association and to determine optimal cutoffs of HGS/BWT and HGS/BMI for MetS, and the effectiveness of interventions in averting the risk.
