A Comprehensive Review of Synthesis, Applications and Future Prospects for Silica Nanoparticles (SNPs)

Effect of hydrophilic polymers on the formation of size-controllable aqueous droplets in water-in-oil emulsion and the fabrication of porous micro-silica particles therefrom

Size-controllable droplets were formed in a water in oil (W/O) emulsion using only hydrophilic polymers without a surfactant to fabricate porous micro-silica particles larger than 20 μm. Droplets of various size ranging from 1 to 30 μm were prepared by emulsifying aqueous solutions containing four types of polymers, namely polyethylene glycol (PEG), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and polypropylene glycol (PPG), in a pentanol oil phase. Following the addition of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a silica precursor, silica particles were grown via hydrolysis and condensation reactions. The silica particle size depends on the degree of hydrophilicity of the polymers, which determines the interfacial tension between the water droplets and oil. Micro-silica particles >20 μm were obtained from PEG-based emulsion droplets. Notably, the distribution and stability of silica particles can be optimized by controlling the molecular weight and concentration of the hydrophilic polymer. A porous silica structure was successfully obtained by decomposing the residual polymer via an appropriate calcination process. The most uniform and stable porous micro-silica particles with an average size of 20 μm were obtained from an emulsion containing 5 wt% PEG (molecular weight: 4000) after calcination at 500 °C. This novel process enables the eco-friendly synthesis of porous micro-silica particles using only hydrophilic polymer without a surfactant and control of pore size and particle size of >20 μm.

Hydrothermally modified rice husk derived silica and molybdenum sulphide embedded chitosan matrix for the removal of cationic dyes

The work reports the hydrothermal fabrication of a Chitosan/Silica/MoS2 (CSM) composite, leveraging chitosan as a structural framework and silica/molybdenum sulphide as inorganic fillers. Silica is sourced from the rice husk and incorporated into the composite to enhance the adsorption behaviour and thermal properties. The formation and the adsorption behaviour of the CSM composite were confirmed with the aid of FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, TGA, XPS, BET, and HR-TEM analyses. The prepared adsorbent was used for removing the methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) dyes from the aqueous solution, achieving adsorption capacities of 34.01 mg/g for MB and 29.85 mg/g for MG. Optimal dye removal occurred within 60 min at a pH of ∼11 and 125 mg of adsorbent dosage. The adsorption process followed the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics by a regression coefficient of R2 > 0.99. Thermodynamic parameters illustrated the exothermic and spontaneous nature of adsorption. Regeneration tests confirmed the CSM composite's stability and reusability over five cycles. The adsorption mechanism involves electrostatic attraction, surface complexation, and hydrogen bonding. These findings indicate that the CSM composite is an effective adsorbent for removing dye pollutants from aqueous solutions.

A greener one-pot synthesis of nanostructured SiO2 for the efficient emerging contaminant removal from simulated textile wastewater

Emerging contaminants are a group of chemicals that have the potential to enter the environment and cause potentially adverse effects on the ecosystems and their components. Currently, the interest in achieving the removal of emerging contaminants from water bodies and wastewater has grown considerably, which is reflected in several publications on the synthesis of nanomaterials capable of adsorbing them. Among emerging pollutants, methylene blue (MB) is a widely used model dye for the study of adsorption processes on nanomaterials. In this work, we report a facile and greener one-pot synthesis of SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2NPs) than the classical Stöber method, involving a cheaper Si source than TEOS, only water as solvent, and shorter reaction times under neutral conditions at room temperature, i.e. a new sol-gel strategy with favorable greenness attributes. A multi-technical characterization of SiO2NPs (XRD, FTIR, UV-vis DR, TEM, SEM, EDX, Z-potential, and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms at 77 K) confirmed the formation of spherical NPs, with amorphous and polydisperse nature, negatively charged surface, and mesoporous structure. Several batch adsorption experiments of MB were performed by varying pH, contact time, model dye concentration, and SiO2NPs dosage, and the kinetic and thermodynamic behavior of the removal reaction was elucidated. It was determined that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and a Langmuir isotherm model. SiO2NPs showed high efficiency towards MB removal after 30 min of contact time (maximum adsorption capacity = 165.6 mg g-1) and high reusability for up to seven cycles without appreciable loss of adsorption efficiency. In addition, this work reports the first successful application of SiO2NPs as a cationic dye nanoadsorbent under simulated conditions of real textile wastewater (high pH, very high concentration of MB and dissolved salts, and high COD), proving that NPs are suitable for conditioning water resources contaminated with industrial dyes.

Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) Oriented Approach to Assess In Vitro Hazard of Silica and Lignin Nanomaterials Derived from Biomass Residues

Bio-based nanomaterials (B-NMs), such as silica oxide (SiO2)- and lignin (Lig)- based nanoparticles (NPs) derived from biomass waste, have gained attention in the last few years in the view of promoting the sustainability principles in several applications. However, scarce data are available about their safety. Thus, a hazard-testing strategy was designed considering as a reference the safe-and-sustainable-by-design (SSbD) framework for chemicals and materials, prioritizing the use of new approach methodologies (NAMs), such as in vitro and adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) approaches, for generating data about the potential hazard of B-NMs. Literature research was performed to identify the adverse outcomes (AOs) related to the selected B-NMs. All the AOPs investigated shared at least oxidative stress, inflammation and cytotoxicity as key events (KEs) that were investigated in lung and immune cells. The tested B-NMs resulted either non-toxic or moderately toxic towards human cells, validating their biocompatibility when compared to reference NMs of similar composition, but not of bio-origin. However, attention should be given to possible AOs deriving after specific functionalization of the B-NMs. Considering the lack of knowledge in this field, the studies performed represent a step forward in the state of the art of the safety assessment of B-NMs.

Silicone Oil-Functionalized Hydrophobic Nano Silica: A Floating Sorbent for Organic Pollutant Removal in Aquatic Systems

Meso/microporous nano silica modified with macromolecular polymers produces attractive hybrids that repel water and have a hydrophobic surface, making them highly effective for targeting and eliminating organic contaminants in aquatic environments. In this study, nano silica was functionalized with silicone oil, an oligomeric siloxane derivative, to produce a hydrophobic silica nano hybrid characterized by a non-wetting water contact angle of 139°. This hydrophobic hybrid nano silica showed a sustainable floating nature on water even in turbulent streams. Due to such robust hydrophobic properties, the hybrid was explored for the separation of three different kinds of contaminants, such as (i) organic dyes, (ii) antibiotics, and (iii) nicotine. The concept of a floating sorbent has been innovatively introduced in this study through the application of silicone oil-modified nano silica. The adsorption experiments were systematically planned, and the data related to the percentage adsorption of contaminants with respect to dosage, pH, and concentration are reported. The results indicated an adsorption efficiency of >99% for cationic dyes with moderate adsorption observed for nicotine and antibiotics. The study highlights the significant potential of silicone oil-modified silica as a hydrophobic floating sorbent for environmental remediation. Buoyancy and strong water-repellent properties facilitate easy recovery and reuse, offering a sustainable and efficient method for the removal of diverse organic pollutants from water systems.

Synthesis of Fe3O4@MCM-48 as Nano Fertilizer for Growth Stimulation in Tomato Plants

Innovative nano fertilizers based on nanoparticles present great potential for agriculture since they can stimulate growth and development in different crops. However, the efficiency of nanoparticles directly depends on their physicochemical characteristics, such as composition, shape, size, and the type of plant species. In this work, a material formed by mesoporous silica and iron oxide (Fe3O4@MCM-48) was synthesized and used as a nano fertilizer for tomato crop. Materials with different percentages of iron (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50% by weight) were applied to study the effect of the amount of iron in the plants and compared with MCM-48 without iron and ferric chloride hexahydrate. Using X-ray diffraction (XRD), it was possible to identify the phases present in the system, and with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), it was observed that the material is made up of a matrix of MCM-48 with embedded Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a size of 5 nm. Also, the results show that all treatments with nano fertilizers increased the content of photosynthetic pigments and carotenoids in leaves. The use of nano fertilizers can be a viable option to improve the crop growth and efficiency of nutrient use in plants.

Silica Nanoparticles from Melon Seed Husk Abrogated Binary Metal(loid) Mediated Cerebellar Dysfunction by Attenuation of Oxido-inflammatory Response and Upregulation of Neurotrophic Factors in Male Albino Rats

Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) have been touted for their role in the management of non-communicable diseases. Their neuroprotective benefits against heavy metal-induced neurotoxicity remain largely unexplored. This is a comparative evaluation of the oxido-inflammatory and neurotrophic effects of Ni, Al, and Ni/Al mixture on the cerebellum of male albino rats with or without treatment with SiNPs generated from melon seed husk. The study complied with the ARRIVE guidelines for reporting in vivo experiments. A total of 91, 7-9 week-old weight-matched male Sprague rats (to avoid sex bias) were randomly divided into 13 different dosing groups where Group 1 served as the control. Other groups received 0.2 mg/kg Ni, 1 mg/kg Al, and 0.2 mg/kg Ni + 1 mg/kg Al mixture with or without different doses of SiNP for 90 days. Rotarod performance was carried out. Oxidative stress markers, Ni, Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, neurotrophic factors, amyloid beta (Aβ-42), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were determined in the cerebellum. SiNPs from melon seed husk caused a significant decrease in Aβ-42 level and activities of AChE and COX-2 and a significant increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) mediated by Ni, Al, and Ni/Al mixture exposure in rats. Neurotoxicity of the Ni/Al mixture is via heightened neuronal lipoperoxidative damage, decreased Mg, and increased Fe, and co-administration of SiNPs from melon seed husk with the Ni/Al mixture attenuated some of these biochemical changes in the cerebellum.

One-pot synthesis and covalent conjugation of methylene blue in mesoporous silica nanoparticles - A platform for enhanced photodynamic therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging clinical modality for diverse disease conditions, including cancer. This technique involves, the generation of cytotoxic reactive oxygen species by a photosensitizer in the presence of light and oxygen. Methylene blue (MB) is a cationic dye with an ability to act as photosensitizing and bioimaging agent. The direct utilization of MB as photosensitizer for biological applications has often been impeded by its poor photostability and unwanted tissue interactions. Nanocarriers such as mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) provide an effective means of overcoming these limitations. However, the mere physical adsorption of the dye within the MSN can result in leakage, compromising the effectiveness of PDT. Therefore, in this work, we report the conjugation of MB into MSNs using novel MB-silane derivatives, namely MBS1 and MBS2, to create dye-doped and amine-functionalized MSNs (MBS1-AMSN and MBS2-AMSN). The PDT efficacy and bioimaging capability of these nanoparticles were compared with those of MSNs in which MB was non-covalently encapsulated (MB@AMSN). The synthesized nanoparticles, ultra-small in size (≤ 35 ± 4 nm) with monodispersity, exhibited enhanced fluorescence quantum yields. MBS1-AMSN demonstrated 70-fold increase, while MBS2-AMSN showed 33-fold improvement in fluorescence quantum yields compared to MB@AMSN at the same concentration. Covalent conjugation resulted in a 2-fold enhancement in the singlet oxygen quantum yield of the dye in MBS1-AMSN and 1.2-fold improvement in MBS2-AMSN, compared to non-covalent encapsulation. Assessment on RAW 264.7 macrophages revealed superior fluorescence in cell imaging for MBS1-AMSN, establishing it as a more efficient PDT agent compared to MBS2-AMSN and MB@AMSN. These findings suggest that MBS1-AMSN holds significant potential as a theranostic nanoplatform for image-guided PDT.

Submicron immunoglobulin particles exhibit FcγRII-dependent toxicity linked to autophagy in TNFα-stimulated endothelial cells

In intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG), and some other immunoglobulin products, protein particles have been implicated in adverse events. Role and mechanisms of immunoglobulin particles in vascular adverse effects of blood components and manufactured biologics have not been elucidated. We have developed a model of spherical silica microparticles (SiMPs) of distinct sizes 200-2000 nm coated with different IVIG- or albumin (HSA)-coronas and investigated their effects on cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). IVIG products (1-20 mg/mL), bare SiMPs or SiMPs with IVIG-corona, did not display significant toxicity to unstimulated HUVEC. In contrast, in TNFα-stimulated HUVEC, IVIG-SiMPs induced decrease of HUVEC viability compared to HSA-SiMPs, while no toxicity of soluble IVIG was observed. 200 nm IVIG-SiMPs after 24 h treatment further increased ICAM1 (intercellular adhesion molecule 1) and tissue factor surface expression, apoptosis, mammalian target of rapamacin (mTOR)-dependent activation of autophagy, and release of extracellular vesicles, positive for mitophagy markers. Toxic effects of IVIG-SiMPs were most prominent for 200 nm SiMPs and decreased with larger SiMP size. Using blocking antibodies, toxicity of IVIG-SiMPs was found dependent on FcγRII receptor expression on HUVEC, which increased after TNFα-stimulation. Similar results were observed with different IVIG products and research grade IgG preparations. In conclusion, submicron particles with immunoglobulin corona induced size-dependent toxicity in TNFα-stimulated HUVEC via FcγRII receptors, associated with apoptosis and mTOR-dependent activation of autophagy. Testing of IVIG toxicity in endothelial cells prestimulated with proinflammatory cytokines is relevant to clinical conditions. Our results warrant further studies on endothelial toxicity of sub-visible immunoglobulin particles.

Assessing inorganic nanoparticle toxicity through omics approaches

In the last two decades, the development of nanotechnology has resulted in inorganic nanoparticles playing crucial roles in key industries, ranging from healthcare to energy technologies. For instance, gold and silver nanoparticles are widely used in rapid COVID-19 and flu tests, titania and zinc oxide nanoparticles are commonly found in cosmetic products, and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles have been clinically exploited as contrast agents and anti-anemia medicines. As a result, human exposure to nanomaterials is continuously increasing, raising concerns about their potential adverse health effects. Historically, the study of nanoparticle toxicity has largely relied on macroscopic observations obtained in different in vitro and in vivo models, resulting in readouts such as median lethal dose, biodistribution profile, and/or histopathological assessment. In recent years, omics methodologies, including transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics, are increasingly used to characterize the biological interactions of nanomaterials, providing a better and broader understanding of their impact and mechanisms of toxicity. These approaches have been able to identify important genes and gene products that mediate toxicological effects, as well as endogenous functions and pathways dysregulated by nanoparticles. Omics methods improve our understanding of nanoparticle biology, and unravel mechanistic insights into nanomedicine-based therapies. This review aims to provide a deeper understanding and new perspectives of omics approaches to characterize the toxicity and biological interactions of inorganic nanoparticles, and improve the safety of nanoparticle applications.

Understanding Biomineralization Mechanisms to Produce Size-Controlled, Tailored Nanocrystals for Optoelectronic and Catalytic Applications: A Review

Biomineralization, the use of biological systems to produce inorganic materials, has recently become an attractive approach for the sustainable manufacturing of functional nanomaterials. Relying on proteins or other biomolecules, biomineralization occurs under ambient temperatures and pressures, which presents an easily scalable, economical, and environmentally friendly method for nanoparticle synthesis. Biomineralized nanocrystals are quickly approaching a quality applicable for catalytic and optoelectronic applications, replacing materials synthesized using expensive traditional routes. Here, we review the current state of development for producing functional nanocrystals using biomineralization and distill the wide variety of biosynthetic pathways into two main approaches: templating and catalysis. Throughout, we compare and contrast biomineralization and traditional syntheses, highlighting optimizations from traditional syntheses that can be implemented to improve biomineralized nanocrystal properties such as size and morphology, making them competitive with chemically synthesized state-of-the-art functional nanomaterials.

Lyophilized Polyvinyl Alcohol and Chitosan Scaffolds Pre-Loaded with Silicon Dioxide Nanoparticles for Tissue Regeneration

Materials with a soft tissue regenerative capacity can be produced using biopolymer scaffolds and nanomaterials, which allow injured tissue to recover without any side effects or limitations. Four formulations were prepared using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS), with silicon dioxide nanoparticles (NPs-SiO2) incorporated using the freeze-drying method at a temperature of -50 °C. TGA and DSC showed no change in thermal degradation, with glass transition temperatures around 74 °C and 77 °C. The interactions between the hydroxyl groups of PVA and CS remained stable. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that the incorporation of NPs-SiO2 complemented the freeze-drying process, enabling the dispersion of the components on the polymeric matrix and obtaining structures with a small pore size (between 30 and 60 μm) and large pores (between 100 and 160 μm). The antimicrobial capacity analysis of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria revealed that the scaffolds inhibited around 99% of K. pneumoniae, E. cloacae, and S. aureus ATCC 55804. The subdermal implantation analysis demonstrated tissue growth and proliferation, with good biocompatibility, promoting the healing process for tissue restoration through the simultaneous degradation and formation of type I collagen fibers. All the results presented expand the boundaries in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine by highlighting the crucial role of nanoparticles in optimizing scaffold properties.

Synthesis and Characterization of SiO2 Nanoparticles for Application as Nanoadsorbent to Clean Wastewater

By way of the sol–gel chemical synthesis method, it is possible to synthesize SiO2 nanoparticles with a defined specific particle size, a surface area, and a defined crystal structure that can be effectively used as a nanoadsorbent to remove various organic dyes. SiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by the sol–gel method using sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) by a green method without using a tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) precursor, which is very expensive and highly toxic. This sol–gel process involves the formation of a colloidal suspension (sol) and solid gelation to form a network in a continuous liquid phase (gel). In addition, it requires controlled atmospheres. XRD indicates the presence of an amorphous phase with a diffraction angle of 2θ = 23°, associated with SiO2. UV-Vis spectroscopy reveals an absorbance value in the region of 200 nm to 300 nm, associated with SiO2 nanoparticles. The application as a nanoadsorbent to remove dyes was measured, and it was found that the nanoparticles with the best performance were those that were synthesized with pH 7, showing a 97% removal with 20 mg of SiO2 nanoparticles in 60 min. Therefore, SiO2 nanoparticles can be used as a nanoadsorbent, using a low-cost and scalable method for application to remove methylene blue in an aqueous medium.

Titania-mediated stabilization of fluorescent dye encapsulation in mesoporous silica nanoparticles

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles hosting guest molecules are a versatile tool with applications in various fields such as life and environmental sciences. Current commonly applied pore blocking strategies are not universally applicable and are often not robust enough to withstand harsh ambient conditions (e.g. geothermal). In this work, a titania layer is utilized as a robust pore blocker, with a test-case where it is used for the encapsulation of fluorescent dyes. The layer is formed by a hydrolysis process of a titania precursor in an adapted microemulsion system and demonstrates effective protection of both the dye payload and the silica core from disintegration under otherwise damaging external conditions. The produced dye-MSN@TiO2 particles are characterized by means of electron microscopy, elemental mapping, ζ-potential, X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), fluorescence and absorbance spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy - Total Attenuated Reflectance (FT-IR ATR). Finally, the performance of the titania-encapsulated MSNs is demonstrated in long-term aqueous stability and in flow-through experiments, where owing to improved dispersion encapsulated dye results in improved flow properties compared to free dye properties. This behavior exemplifies the potential advantage of carrier-borne marker molecules over free dye molecules in applications where accessibility or targeting are a factor, thus this encapsulation method increases the variety of fields of application.

Inorganic nanoparticle-cored dendrimers for biomedical applications: A review

Hybrid nanostructures exhibit a synergistic combination of features derived from their individual components, showcasing novel characteristics resulting from their distinctive structure and chemical/physical properties. Surface modifiers play a pivotal role in shaping INPs' primary attributes, influencing their physicochemical properties, stability, and functional applications. Among these modifiers, dendrimers have gained attention as highly effective multifunctional agents for INPs, owing to their unique structural qualities, dendritic effects, and physicochemical properties. Dendrimers can be seamlessly integrated with diverse inorganic nanostructures, including metal NPs, carbon nanostructures, silica NPs, and QDs. Two viable approaches to achieving this integration involve either growing or grafting dendrimers, resulting in inorganic nanostructure-cored dendrimers. The initial step involves functionalizing the nanostructures' surface, followed by the generation of dendrimers through stepwise growth or attachment of pre-synthesized dendrimer branches. This hybridization imparts superior qualities to the resulting structure, including biocompatibility, solubility, high cargo loading capacity, and substantial functionalization potential. Combining the unique properties of dendrimers with those of the inorganic nanostructure cores creates a multifunctional system suitable for diverse applications such as theranostics, bio-sensing, component isolation, chemotherapy, and cargo-carrying applications. This review summarizes the recent developments, with a specific focus on the last five years, within the realm of dendrimers. It delves into their role as modifiers of INPs and explores the potential applications of INP-cored dendrimers in the biomedical applications.

Greening the pathways: a comprehensive review of sustainable synthesis strategies for silica nanoparticles and their diverse applications

Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) have emerged as a multipurpose solution with wide-ranging applications in various industries such as medicine, agriculture, construction, cosmetics, and food production. In 1961, Stöber introduced a ground-breaking sol-gel method for synthesizing SiNPs, which carried a new era of exploration both in academia and industry, uncovering numerous possibilities for these simple yet multifaceted particles. Inspite of numerous reported literature with wide applicability, the synthesis of these nanoparticles with the desired size and functionalities poses considerable challenges. Over time, researchers have strived to optimize the synthetic route, particularly by developing greener approaches that minimize environmental impact. By reducing hazardous chemicals, energy consumption, and waste generation, these greener synthesis methods have become an important focus in the field. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the various synthetic approaches available for different types of SiNPs. Starting from the Stöber' method, we analyze other methods as well to synthesis different types of SiNPs including mesoporous, core-shell and functionalized nanoparticles. With increasing concerns with the chemical methods associated for environmental issues, we aim to assist readers in identifying suitable greener synthesis methods tailored to their specific requirements. By highlighting the advancements in reaction time optimization, waste reduction, and environmentally friendly precursors, we offer insights into the latest techniques that contribute to greener and more sustainable SiNPs synthesis. Additionally, we briefly discuss the diverse applications of SiNPs, demonstrating their relevance and potential impact in fields such as medicine, agriculture, and cosmetics. By emphasizing the greener synthesis methods and economical aspects, this review aims to inspire researchers and industry professionals to adopt environmentally conscious practices while harnessing the immense capabilities of SiNPs.

Reproducibility of inverse gas chromatography under infinite dilution: Results and interpretations of an interlaboratory study

Over the last years, inverse gas chromatography (IGC) proved to be a versatile and sensitive analytical technique for physicochemical properties. However, the comparability of results obtained by different users and devices remains a topic for debate. This is the first time, an interlaboratory study using different types of IGC instruments is reported. Eight organizations with different IGC devices defined a common lab measurement protocol to analyse two standard materials, silica and lactose. All data was collected in a standard result form and has been treated identically with the objective to identify experimentally observed differences and not potentially different data treatments. The calculated values of the dispersive surface energy vary quite significantly (silica: 22 mJ/m2 - 34 mJ/m2, lactose 37 mJ/m2 - 51 mJ/m2) and so do the ISP values and retention volumes for both materials. This points towards significant and seemingly undiscovered differences in the operation of the instruments and the obtained underlying primary data, even under the premise of standard conditions. Variations are independent of the instrument type and uncertainties in flow rates or the injected quantities of probe molecules may be potential factors for the differences. This interlaboratory study demonstrates that the IGC is a very sensitive analytical tool, which detects minor changes, but it also shows that for a proper comparison, the measurement conditions have to be checked with great care. A publicly available standard protocol and material, for which this study can be seen as a starting point, is still needed to judge on the measurements and the resulting parameters more objectively.

Nanoparticle-Based Approaches for Treatment of Hematological Malignancies: a Comprehensive Review

Blood cancer, also known as hematological malignancy, is one of the devastating types of cancer that has significantly paved its mortality mark globally. It persists as an extremely deadly cancer type and needs utmost attention owing to its negligible overall survival rate. Major challenges in the treatment of blood cancer include difficulties in early diagnosis, as well as severe side effects resulting from chemotherapy. In addition, immunotherapies and targeted therapies can be prohibitively expensive. Over the past two decades, scientists have devised a few nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems aimed at overcoming this challenge. These therapeutic strategies are engineered to augment the cellular uptake, pharmacokinetics, and effectiveness of anticancer drugs. However, there are still numerous types of nanoparticles that could potentially improve the efficacy of blood cancer treatment, while also reducing treatment costs and mitigating drug-related side effects. To the best of our knowledge, there has been limited reviews published on the use of nano-based drug delivery systems for the treatment of hematological malignancies. Therefore, we have made a concerted effort to provide a comprehensive review that draws upon recent literature and patents, with a focus on the most promising results regarding the use of nanoparticle-based approaches for the treatment of hematological malignancies. All these crucial points covered under a common title would significantly help researchers and scientists working in the area.

Progressing nanotechnology to improve targeted cancer treatment: overcoming hurdles in its clinical implementation

The use of nanotechnology has the potential to revolutionize the detection and treatment of cancer. Developments in protein engineering and materials science have led to the emergence of new nanoscale targeting techniques, which offer renewed hope for cancer patients. While several nanocarriers for medicinal purposes have been approved for human trials, only a few have been authorized for clinical use in targeting cancer cells. In this review, we analyze some of the authorized formulations and discuss the challenges of translating findings from the lab to the clinic. This study highlights the various nanocarriers and compounds that can be used for selective tumor targeting and the inherent difficulties in cancer therapy. Nanotechnology provides a promising platform for improving cancer detection and treatment in the future, but further research is needed to overcome the current limitations in clinical translation.

Using Thermomechanical Properties to Reassess Particles' Dispersion in Nanostructured Polymers: Size vs. Content

Nanoparticle-filled polymers (i.e., nanocomposites) can exhibit characteristics unattainable by the unfilled polymer, making them attractive to engineer structural composites. However, the transition of particulate fillers from the micron to the nanoscale requires a comprehensive understanding of how particle downsizing influences molecular interactions and organization across multiple length scales, ranging from chemical bonding to microstructural evolution. This work outlines the advancements described in the literature that have become relevant and have shaped today's understanding of the processing-structure-property relationships in polymer nanocomposites. The main inorganic and organic particles that have been incorporated into polymers are examined first. The commonly practiced methods for nanoparticle incorporation are then highlighted. The development in mechanical properties-such as tensile strength, storage modulus and glass transition temperature-in the selected epoxy matrix nanocomposites described in the literature was specifically reviewed and discussed. The significant effect of particle content, dispersion, size, and mean free path on thermomechanical properties, commonly expressed as a function of weight percentage (wt.%) of added particles, was found to be better explained as a function of particle crowding (number of particles and distance among them). From this work, it was possible to conclude that the dramatic effect of particle size for the same tiny amount of very small and well-dispersed particles brings evidence that particle size and the particle weight content should be downscaled together.

Nanosilica size-dependent toxicity in Ceriodaphnia reticulata (Cladocera)

Silica nanoparticles (SiNP) are the most produced nanomaterials due to their variety of applications. When released to environments, surface water bodies are their main final sink. SiNP toxicity is still inconclusive and may vary according to particle properties such as their size. We analyzed the size-related effects of SiNP (22 and 244 nm) on mortality, life history traits, and oxidative stress in the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia reticulata. The smaller SiNP (LC5072 h: 105.5 µg/ml) were more lethal than the larger ones (LC5072 h >500 µg/ml). The 22 nm-sized SiNP decreased the number of molts and neonates, increased superoxide dismutase and inhibited glutathione S-transferase activities, while larger SiNP did not exert substantial effects on the organisms at the tested concentrations. In conclusion, SiNP toxicity depended on their size, and this information should be considered for regulatory purposes and to the development of safe-by-design nanoproducts to ultimately guarantee the environment protection.

Silica-Based Materials Containing Inorganic Red/NIR Emitters and Their Application in Biomedicine

The low absorption of biological substances and living tissues in the red/near-infrared region (therapeutic window) makes luminophores emitting in the range of ~650-1350 nm favorable for in vitro and in vivo imaging. In contrast to commonly used organic dyes, inorganic red/NIR emitters, including ruthenium complexes, quantum dots, lanthanide compounds, and octahedral cluster complexes of molybdenum and tungsten, not only exhibit excellent emission in the desired region but also possess additional functional properties, such as photosensitization of the singlet oxygen generation process, upconversion luminescence, photoactivated effects, and so on. However, despite their outstanding functional applicability, they share the same drawback-instability in aqueous media under physiological conditions, especially without additional modifications. One of the most effective and thus widely used types of modification is incorporation into silica, which is (1) easy to obtain, (2) biocompatible, and (3) non-toxic. In addition, the variety of morphological characteristics, along with simple surface modification, provides room for creativity in the development of various multifunctional diagnostic/therapeutic platforms. In this review, we have highlighted biomedical applications of silica-based materials containing red/NIR-emitting compounds.

Nanoparticle Synthesis and Their Integration into Polymer-Based Fibers for Biomedical Applications

The potential of nanoparticles as effective drug delivery systems combined with the versatility of fibers has led to the development of new and improved strategies to help in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Nanoparticles have extraordinary characteristics that are helpful in several applications, including wound dressings, microbial balance approaches, tissue regeneration, and cancer treatment. Owing to their large surface area, tailor-ability, and persistent diameter, fibers are also used for wound dressings, tissue engineering, controlled drug delivery, and protective clothing. The combination of nanoparticles with fibers has the power to generate delivery systems that have enhanced performance over the individual architectures. This review aims at illustrating the main possibilities and trends of fibers functionalized with nanoparticles, focusing on inorganic and organic nanoparticles and polymer-based fibers. Emphasis on the recent progress in the fabrication procedures of several types of nanoparticles and in the description of the most used polymers to produce fibers has been undertaken, along with the bioactivity of such alliances in several biomedical applications. To finish, future perspectives of nanoparticles incorporated within polymer-based fibers for clinical use are presented and discussed, thus showcasing relevant paths to follow for enhanced success in the field.

Novel Oxygen- and Curcumin-Laden Ionic Liquid@Silica Nanocapsules for Enhanced Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy

The efficiency of photodynamic therapy is often limited by the scarcity of oxygen at the target site. To address this problem, this work proposes the development of a new nanosystem for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy applications (aPDT) where the natural-origin photosensitizer curcumin (CUR) is immersed in an oxygen-rich environment. Inspired by the perfluorocarbon-based photosensitizer/O2 nanocarriers reported in the literature, we developed a new type of silica nanocapsule containing curcumin dissolved in three hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs) with high oxygen dissolving capacities. The nanocapsules (CUR-IL@ncSi), prepared by an original oil-in-water microemulsion/sol-gel method, had a high IL content and exhibited clear capacities to dissolve and release significant amounts of oxygen, as demonstrated by deoxygenation/oxygenation studies. The ability of CUR-IL solutions and of CUR-IL@ncSi to generate singlet oxygen (1O2) upon irradiation was confirmed by the detection of 1O2 phosphorescence at 1275 nm. Furthermore, the enhanced capacities of oxygenated CUR-IL@ncSi suspensions to generate 1O2 upon irradiation with blue light were confirmed by an indirect spectrophotometric method. Finally, preliminary microbiological tests using CUR-IL@ncSi incorporated into gelatin films showed the occurrence of antimicrobial effects due to photodynamic inactivation, with their relative efficiencies depending on the specific IL in which curcumin was dissolved. Considering these results, CUR-IL@ncSi has the potential to be used in the future to develop biomedical products with enhanced oxygenation and aPDT capacities.

Synthesis, analysis, and multi-faceted applications of solid wastes-derived silica nanoparticles: a comprehensive review (2010-2022)

The synthesis of silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) has emerged as an extensive area of research in the last century. Owing to their instinctive properties like modifiable mesoporous structure, high surface area, adjustable pore size, and pore volume, SiNPs could be utilized in numerous fields like chemical, biochemical, catalysis, adsorption, and pollution control. Conventionally, SiNPs are produced by tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS), and sodium silicate, which are toxic and expensive. Therefore, the development of green, cost-effective approaches for the synthesis of SiNPs is highly desirable. In this course, during the last decade, silica-rich solid wastes (rice husk, corn cob, sugarcane bagasse, palm ash, fly ash, waste glass, waste packaging materials, photonic industrial wastes, etc.) were acknowledged as economical precursors to produce green SiNPs. In this respect, the present review focuses on reviewing several solid waste materials used for the synthesis of SiNPs, their properties, and different characterization techniques used for the analysis of SiNPs. The present review also accounts for the potential applications of such green SiNPs in several fields like catalysis, adsorption, biomedical applications, and energy storage. Moreover, despite the potential applications of SiNPs, still there is a lot to explore about their synthesis and utilization. Hence, in the last section of this review, future scope, challenges, and risk assessment of SiNPs have been discussed.

Stöber method and its nuances over the years

Some characteristics of silica-based materials, such as the control/adjustment of their physical and chemical properties, compatibility, and friendly-use synthesis methods, have held the attention of several scientific groups over the years. This condition of prominence becomes even more evident when we seek these characteristics at the micro- and/or nanoscale. Among existing methods to obtain these micro/nanomaterials, the Stöber method is the focus of this review. This method is known to enable the production of silica micro- or nanoparticles from reagents of medium-easy manipulation under mild conditions using equipment that is common in most laboratories. However, this method has many nuances that must be considered to guarantee accurate results, either in size or distribution, and to ensure result reproducibility. Thus, in this review, we discuss the effects of the primary components used in the synthesis of these materials (i.e., TEOS, ammonia, and water), as well as those of other reaction conditions, such as solvent, temperature, and ionic strength. Therefore, we discuss studies involving the synthesis and characterization of micro- and nanoparticles over the years to establish discussions between their experimental observations and proposed models. This review provides experimental observations about the synthesis of these materials, as well as discussions according to complementary and/or contradictory evidence found over the years. This review seeks to help those who intend to work with this method and provide certain key points that, in our experience, can be important to obtain desired results.

A comprehensive review of hydrophobic silica and composite aerogels: synthesis, properties and recent progress towards environmental remediation and biomedical applications

The hydrophobicity of silica and composite aerogels has enabled them to acquire applications in a variety of fields. With remarkable structural, morphological, and physiochemical properties such as high porosity, surface area, chemical stability, and selectivity, these materials have gained much attention of researchers worldwide. Moreover, the hydrophobic conduct has enabled these aerogels to adsorb substances, i.e., organic pollutants, without collapsing the pore and network structure. Hence, considering such phenomenal properties and great adsorption potential, exploiting these materials for environmental and biomedical applications is trending. The present study explores the most recent advances in synthetic approaches and resulting properties of hydrophobic silica and composite aerogels. It presents the various precursors and co-precursors used for hydrophobization and gives a comparative analysis of drying methods. Moreover, as a major focus, the work presents the recent progress where these materials have shown promising results for various environmental remediation and biomedical applications. Finally, the bottlenecks in synthesis and applicability along with future prospects are given in conclusions.

Silica nanoparticles are novel aqueous additive mitigating heavy metals toxicity and improving the health of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus

Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) are among the non-toxic nanoparticles (NPs) that have magnetic capabilities. It is hypothesized that SiNPs may be able to reduce toxic effects exerted by a mixture of lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) in African catfish Clarias gariepinus. The in vitro magnetic potential of SiNPs to absorb Pb and Hg was tested. Fish (N = 240) were divided into four groups in triplicates for 30 days. The first group served as control and the second group (SiNPs) was exposed to 1/10 of 96 h LC50 of SiNPs (14.45 mg/L). The third group (HMM) was exposed to 1/10 of 96-h LC50 of a mixture of mercury chloride (HgCl₂) and lead chloride (PbCl₂) equal to 0.04 mg/ L and 23.1 mg/L. The fourth group (SiNPs+ HMM) was exposed to a suspension composed of SiNPs, HgCl₂, and PbCl₂ at the same concentrations as the third group. Results showed that fish exposed to heavy metals revealed the following consequences; a significant decrease in hematological, immunological (complement-3 and nitric oxide), and antioxidants (total antioxidant capacity, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase) indices, down-regulation of IL-1β, IL-8, TGF-β, NF-κβ, HSP70, and Hepcidin genes, the highest mortality rate (48.33%), higher values of alkaline phosphatase, alanine, and aspartate aminotransferases, urea, creatinine, and branchial malondialdehyde, marked up-regulation of CC chemokine and CXC chemokines, and high HMs residues levels in muscles. Extensive pathology showed degeneration with diffuse vacuolation of hepatopancreatic cells and hemorrhage in the HMM group. Interestingly, the exposed group to SiNPs and HMM demonstrated a decline of HMs concentration in fish muscles and modulated the abovementioned parameters with the regeneration of histological alterations of liver and gills. Based on the study outcomes, we highlight the importance and the safety of SiNPs as a novel aqueous additive to alleviate HMs toxicity and recommend using SiNPs for enhancing fish performance for sustaining aquaculture without adverting safety of human health by their little accumulation in muscular tissue.
