Abstract
The US Hispanic population faces rising skin cancer risks and poorer clinical outcomes, despite lower incidence rates. Acculturation, adopting elements of the dominant culture, may influence skin cancer attitudes and behaviors among Hispanics. We systematically reviewed PubMed articles from 2000 to 2023. Peer-reviewed English articles that assessed the relationship between acculturation and skin cancer in the Hispanic population were included. Andreeva et al. observed that lower acculturation levels correlated with increased use of shade and protective clothing (P < 0.05). More acculturated Latinos were more likely to use sunscreen, but this association weakened after adjusting for covariates (P > 0.48). Heckman et al. highlighted significant differences in skin cancer concern among Hispanic youth, with less acculturated individuals expressing greater worry (P < 0.05). Coups et al. found that higher acculturation was linked to less sun protective clothing usage and more frequent sunburns. Their subsequent online survey indicated that English-acculturated Hispanics engaged less in protective behaviors. Viola et al. reported that English-acculturated Hispanics perceived greater suntan benefits and had lower perceptions of skin cancer risk, severity, and concerns about photo-aging, along with higher melanoma risk factors, compared to Spanish-acculturated Hispanics. Acculturation influences skin cancer attitudes and behaviors in Hispanics. Tailored interventions based on acculturation levels are essential to reduce skin cancer risk. For example, educating English-acculturated Hispanics about skin cancer risks and prioritizing knowledge dissemination for Spanish-acculturated individuals may be effective approaches. These findings emphasize the need for targeted skin cancer prevention efforts to address disparities among US Hispanics.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the association between parents' fatalism about melanoma and their children's sun protection, and the potential moderating role of parent-child communication. In this observational study of N = 69 melanoma-surviving parents of children ages 8-17, parents reported on their own melanoma fatalism, as well as their children's sun safety behaviors and parent-child discussion about sun safety. Parent gender, family history of melanoma, and frequency of parent-child discussions moderated the relationship between parents' fatalism and children's sun safety behaviors. Among mothers and parents with a family history of melanoma, high fatalism was associated with lower child sunscreen use, especially when discussions were less frequent. Melanoma surviving parents' fatalistic beliefs about cancer indirectly influence their children's health behavior and are a risk factor for unsafe sun behavior. Attending to parent gender, family history, and their communications about protective behaviors as co-factors of this risk could inform future intervention targeting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skin cancer incidence and prognosis vary by ethnicity and gender, and previous studies demonstrate ethnic and gender differences in sun-related cognitions and behaviors that contribute to this disease. The current study sought to inform skin cancer interventions tailored to specific demographic groups of college students. The study applied the prototype willingness model (PWM) to examine how unique combinations of ethnic and gender identities influence sun-related cognitions. METHOD Using data from a survey of 262 college students, the study tested whether self-reported sun-related cognitions were different for White women, Hispanic women, White men, and Hispanic men. Path modeling was also used to identify which PWM cognitions (e.g., prototypes, norms) were the strongest predictors of risk and protection intentions and willingness in each demographic group. RESULTS Several differences in sun-related cognitions and PWM pathways emerged across groups, emphasizing the need for tailored skin cancer education and interventions. Results suggest that, for White women, interventions should primarily focus on creating less favorable attitudes toward being tan. CONCLUSION Interventions for Hispanic women may instead benefit from manipulating perceived similarity to sun-related prototypes, encouraging closer personal identification with images of women who protect their skin and encouraging less identification with images of women who tan. For White men, skin cancer interventions may focus on creating more favorable images of men who protect their skin from the sun. Lastly, interventions for Hispanic men should increase perceived vulnerability for skin cancer.

Abstract
The focus of this review was to determine how qualitative methods are used in dermatology research and whether published manuscripts meet current standards for qualitative research. A scoping review of manuscripts published in English between January 1, 2016 and September 22, 2021 was conducted. A coding document was developed to collect information on authors, methodology, participants, research theme, and the presence of quality criteria as outlined by the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research. Manuscripts were included if they described original qualitative research about dermatologic conditions or topics of primary interest to dermatology. An adjacency search yielded 372 manuscripts, and after screening, 134 met the inclusion criteria. Most studies utilized interviews or focus groups, and researchers predominantly selected participants on the basis of disease status, including over 30 common and rare dermatologic conditions. Research themes frequently included patient experience of disease, development of patient-reported outcomes, and descriptions of provider and caregiver experiences. Although most authors explained their analysis and sampling strategy and included empirical data, few referenced qualitative data reporting standards. Missed opportunities for qualitative methods in dermatology include examination of health disparities, exploration of surgical and cosmetic dermatology experiences, and determination of the lived experience of and provider attitudes toward diverse patient populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Skin cancer is the most common secondary malignancy among young adult childhood cancer survivors (YA-CCS). Skin examination to detect skin cancer early (including melanoma as well as basal or squamous cell skin cancers), both physician-based (PSE) and self-skin exam (SSE), is recommended, particularly for radiotherapy-exposed YA-CCS who are at high risk of developing skin cancer. METHODS Awareness and prevalence of skin examination and demographic, clinical, and healthcare correlates were examined in a population-based sample of YA-CCS with diverse cancer types excluding melanoma. Descriptive frequencies and logistic regression models were conducted using sample weights to correct for non-response bias with PSE, SSE and adherence to both as outcomes. RESULTS The sample comprised 1064 participants with 53% Latino. Eight percent of participants were aware of the need for skin examination; 9% reported receipt of PSE within past 2 years; 35% reported regular SSE; and 6% were adherent to both. Among the radiotherapy-treated, 10% were aware of the need for skin examination, 10% reported recent PSE; 38% reported regular SSE; and 8% were adherent to both. Healthcare and clinical factors including healthcare self-efficacy, engagement in cancer-related follow-up care, greater treatment intensity and greater number of treatment-related late effects were positively associated with PSE and SSE. Latino YA-CCS were less likely to engage in PSE and SSE. CONCLUSION(S) Adherence to recommended screening for skin cancer was low in this at-risk population, notably for YA-CCS exposed to radiotherapy. The development of effective strategies to expand skin cancer screening is needed in this at-risk population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Melanoma mortality rates in the US are highest among older men, individuals of lower socioeconomic status (SES), and people of color. To better understand these inequities, a qualitative exploratory study was conducted in Northern and Southern California to generate knowledge about barriers and facilitators of awareness, prevention, and early detection of melanoma in lower SES Latinx and non-Latinx White (NLW) individuals living in urban and semi-rural areas. METHODS Nineteen focus groups were conducted (N = 176 adult participants), stratified by race/ethnicity (Latinx, low-income NLW), geography (semi-rural, urban), and language (English and Spanish). Inductive and deductive thematic analysis was conducted, and the findings were organized using the socioecological model framework: individual, interpersonal, community, and health system/policy levels. RESULTS Four socioecological themes describe how key factors affect knowledge, perceived risk, preventive behaviors, and melanoma screening. Individual level findings revealed that many participants were not familiar with melanoma, yet were willing to learn through trusted sources. Having brown or darker skin tone was perceived as being associated with lower risk for skin cancer. Interpersonally, social relationships were important influences for skin cancer prevention practice. However, for several Latinx and semi-rural participants, conversations about melanoma prevention did not occur with family and peers. At the community level, semi-rural participants reported distance or lack of transportation to a clinic as challenges for accessing dermatology care. Healthcare systems barriers included burdens of additional healthcare costs for dermatology visits and obtaining referral. CONCLUSIONS Varying factors influence the awareness levels, beliefs, and behaviors associated with knowledge, prevention, and early detection of melanoma among low-income Latinx and NLW individuals and in semi-rural areas. Results have implications for health education interventions. Navigation strategies that target individuals, families, and health care settings can promote improved prevention and early detection of melanoma in these communities.

Abstract
Background Women’s perception and knowledge of breast cancer signs, symptoms, and risk factors could be conducive to breast cancer risk management and interventions. The present study aimed to explore Iranian laywomen perceptions and expert opinions regarding breast cancer risk factors. Methods This qualitative study was conducted from March to November 2019 in Mashhad, northeast of Iran. Through purposive sampling, 24 laywomen (women with and without BC) and 10 experts of different fields including oncology, surgery, gynecology and reproductive health were selected. Data collection was carried out using semi-structured interviews, which was mainly focused on the participants’ understanding and perception of BC risk factors. The data was analyzed utilizing conventional content analysis developed by Graneheim & Lundman. Components of trustworthiness, including credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability were considered. Results The main category of risk factors, which emerged from the lay participants’ data analysis, were “unhealthy lifestyle and habits” , “hormonal influences”, “environmental exposures”, “Individual susceptibility “and “belief in supernatural powers”. The experts had similar perspectives for certain risk factors, yet not for all. The category of “Individual history of disease” was emerged only from experts’ interviews. Conclusion In the present study, the lay participants’ perception concerning BC risk factors was found to be a mixture of cultural beliefs and the scientific knowledge dispersed by the media, internet, and health services. Primary prevention approaches, including awareness of breast cancer risk factors, are required for women to make improved health-related choices.

Abstract
Alternative therapies for cancer treatment have been developed using bioactive compounds such as betulinic acid (BA). The objective of this study was to investigate the bioactivity of BA in its free form and compare it with its nano-encapsulated form under a skin carcinogenesis protocol in a genetically modified murine model. K14E6 and FVB mice were divided into four groups to be treated with free BA and with betulinic acid nanoemulsion (BANE). Lecithin enriched with medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) was employed as an emulsifier to prepare the nanoemulsions with a mean droplet size of 40 nm. Skin tumors were induced by exposure to DMBA and TPA directly to the transgenic mice. Tumor development was completely inhibited by BANE and by 70% with free BA. This was validated by histological sections and the gene expression of the Cdk4 and Casp8 genes.

Abstract
Knowledge regarding skin tone preferences and their influence on skincare behaviors among people of color is limited. The objective of this study was to determine whether there is a difference between ideal and actual skin tone among people of color and whether this difference is associated with tanning and sunscreen use. This was a one-time, voluntary, anonymous, electronic survey designed in REDCap and delivered through ResearchMatch, a national electronic, recruitment tool. Eligible participants were at least 18 years old and self-identified as Black, Asian, Latinx, American Indian/Alaskan Native or Mixed Race. In total, 548 completed survey results were analyzed using SAS. Only the Latinx population was found to have a significant preference for tanner skin (p < 0.05). The Latinx population had significantly more subjects that participated in outdoor tanning than both the Black (p < 0.0001) and Asian population (p < 0.05). Latinx participants who indicated a preference for tanner skin were 2.8 times more likely to never use sunscreen than those without this preference (OR = 2.821, CI = 1.029-7.732, p < 0.05). Our findings have implications for how dermatologists screen, treat, and educate Latinx and skin of color populations.

Abstract
Simple Summary Genetic information is publicly available but research examining the best use of such information has not engaged diverse members of the public. We examined public reactions to melanoma genetic testing (using the melanocortin-1 receptor [MC1R] gene) in a study randomizing (like the flip of a coin) 600 diverse primary care patients to a MC1R test offer or usual care. We found that testing did not improve sun protection and skin cancer screening, nor did it lead worry to increase. However, groups less aware of their skin cancer risk, including those who thought their risk was “unlikely” at the start of the study, showed significant improvements in sun protection at three months. In conclusion, testing might be very helpful for certain people who have the most to learn about their risk, who may become motivated to protect themselves from the damaging effects of the sun as a result of skin cancer genetic testing. Abstract Public availability of genetic information is increasing; thus, efforts to improve diversity in basic and translational research in genomics is a top priority. Given the increasing U.S. incidence and mortality of melanoma, and the prevalence of common melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene melanoma risk variants in the general population, we examined genomic testing of MC1R for skin cancer risk in a randomized controlled trial in Albuquerque, New Mexico primary care. Participants were 48% Hispanic and were randomized 5:1 to a MC1R test invitation or usual care. We assessed 3 month sun protection, skin cancer screening, and skin cancer worry outcomes associated with testing, and key effect moderators (e.g., cancer risk perceptions, and skin cancer risk factors). Our findings indicate that the primary outcomes were unchanged by the MC1R test offer, test acceptance, and level of risk feedback. Moderator analyses showed that those with lower risk perception, and those with skin that readily tans, significantly increased their sun protection in response to higher than average risk feedback. Risk feedback did not prompt cancer worry, and average risk feedback did not erode existing sun protection. This study paves the way for the development of tailored strategies to address low skin cancer risk awareness in this understudied context of public health genomics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer for Chinese Americans. Family history (FH) plays an important role in clinical practice for CRC prevention. Nevertheless, Chinese Americans' FH of CRC communication with primary care physicians (PCPs) are still unknown. AIMS This study examined Chinese Americans' behavior and the underlying psychological factors for FH of CRC communication with PCPs. METHOD A total number of 742 Chinese Americans completed a survey developed based on the health belief model, the theory of planned behavior, and the social cognitive theory. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. RESULTS Majority of the Chinese American participants (75.3%) had never discussed FH of CRC with their PCPs. Lack of inquiries from the PCPs was the main barrier. Structural equation modeling results suggested a good model fit between our theoretical model and the survey data (comparative fit index [CFI] = .946, root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = .070, and standardized root mean square residual [SRMR] = .020). Participants' FH of CRC communication with PCPs was positively associated with their intention (β = .30, p < .001), which was positively correlated to attitudes (β = .29, p < .001) and self-efficacy in discussing FH of CRC with PCPs (β = .57, p < .001). Their attitudes were positively associated with perceived susceptibility to CRC (β = .08, p < .05) and the perceived benefits of communicating FH of CRC (β = .52, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS Given that most Chinese Americans in this study did not communicate their FH of CRC with their PCPs, it is important to promote such behavior among Chinese Americans. Our structural equation modeling findings can guide future interventions and education for this underserved racial/ethnic minority group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hispanics are among the fastest growing population in the United States and are predicted to account for one third of the nation by 2060. Although melanoma is more common among white patients, Hispanic individuals are at greater risk of late-stage diagnosis, increased tumor thickness, and poorer survival. OBJECTIVE To better understand public awareness of melanoma and evaluate change over the last 21 years, particularly among high-risk minority populations. METHODS A cross-sectional survey collecting information on knowledge and awareness of melanoma was conducted on 285 participants from May through November 2017. RESULTS Approximately 39% of participants were unaware of melanoma. Sixty-five percent successfully identified early signs of disease. Approximately 86% of Fitzpatrick skin types (FST) I and II identified melanoma as a cancer, compared to 46.3% of FST III and IV and 57.6% of FST V and VI. Hispanic particiapnts were less likely to know what melanoma was compared to white participants (odds ratio [OR], 0.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.65-0.11; P = .0037). US natives (OR, 2.38; 95% CI, 5.56-1.04; P = .0403) and patients with any college education (OR, 2.86; 95% CI, 5.26-1.54; P = .0007) were more likely to know the meaning of melanoma. CONCLUSION White participants and those with any college education were more likely to know the meaning of melanoma. Individuals of racial and ethnic minorities would benefit from educational programs geared toward early detection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sailors are exposed to sunlight as their job requires and are, in the long run, more prone to different types of skin cancer. This study aimed to explore sailors' experience of perceived threat and to show protective behaviors against sunlight in the south of Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present follows a qualitative approach and directed content analysis in 2018-2019 among sailors who were selected purposively through an interview procedure. Finally, 22 sailors and 3 patients with skin cancer with an experience of sailing were interviewed until data satiation occurred. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview based on two constructs, perceived susceptibility and perceived severity of protection motivation theory, and were instantly transcribed and read more than once by the present researcher. Simultaneously, the data were entered into MAXQDA 10 for the primary categorization. RESULTS Data analysis results were classified into 5 categories and 12 subcategories: protective attempts (change of work time and use of protectives), passivity in self-protection (not showing protective behaviors and not examining skin), inadequate perception of affliction risk (beliefs hindering preventive behaviors and low sensitivity), perceived threat to personal and familial conditions (loss of peace and loss of occupational-familial positions), and threat to health (incurable disease and perceived skin disease). CONCLUSIONS Awareness of these factors helps planners to choose the best preventive strategies with a focus on correcting beliefs and promoting protective behaviors as well as examining and screening sailors regularly to diagnose skin cancer. Moreover, to develop practical measures of protective strategies against sunlight among sailors, the required steps should be taken. This can help to reduce the rate of work-related risks while exposed to sunlight in this population.

Abstract
Importance Germline variants in the MC1R gene are common and confer moderate melanoma risk in those with varied skin types. Approaches to precision skin cancer prevention that include genetic information may promote risk awareness and risk reduction in the general population, including Hispanics. Objective To examine prevalence of interest in and uptake of MC1R testing in the general population and examine patterns across demographic and skin cancer risk factors. Design, Setting, and Participants A randomized clinical trial examined interest in and uptake of MC1R testing among patients at University of New Mexico General Internal Medicine clinics. Study participants were randomized to either a usual-care condition (National Cancer Institute skin cancer pamphlet for diverse skin types) or an MC1R test offer. Participants were registered clinic patients (≥6 months) and English or Spanish fluent. Of the 600 participants recruited to the overall trial, the present study included those 499 participants randomized to the MC1R test offer. Interventions Participants were presented with the option to log onto the study website to read 3 educational modules presenting the rationale, benefits, and drawbacks of MC1R testing. Main Outcomes and Measures Main outcomes include website log on (yes vs no), saliva test kit request (yes vs no), and saliva test kit return for MC1R testing (yes vs no). Demographic and skin cancer risk factors were examined as potential predictors of test interest and uptake. Results Of the 499 participants (220 [44%] non-Hispanic white, 242 [48%] Hispanic, 396 [79%] female; mean [SD] age, 54 [14.3] years), 232 (46%) elected to learn about MC1R testing by logging onto the website; 204 (88%) of those who logged on decided to request testing; and 167 (82%) of those who requested testing returned the kit. The strongest predictors of website log on were race/ethnicity and education (non-Hispanic whites were more likely to log on [odds ratio for Hispanics vs non-Hispanic whites, 0.5; 95% CI, 0.3-0.7], as were more highly educated individuals [odds ratio for more than high school vs high school or less, 2.7; 95% CI, 1.7-4.3]). The strongest predictor of ordering the test was sunburn history (odds ratio, 5.4; 95% CI, 2.3-12.9 vs no sunburn history). Conclusions and Relevance There were moderately high levels of MC1R test interest and uptake in this diverse sample. Addressing potential barriers to testing may be warranted as genomic information becomes integrated into general population approaches to the precision prevention of skin cancer. Abstract
BACKGROUND Translational research in genomics has limited reach and requires efforts to broaden access and utility in diverse populations. Skin cancer is common and rates are rising, including among Hispanics. Germline variants in the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene are common in the population and confer moderate risk for melanoma and basal cell cancers across skin types. Feedback about MC1R risk status may promote skin cancer risk awareness and risk reduction. AIMS We examined the level of interest in pursuing MC1R testing, and patterns of interest across skin cancer perceived threat and control attitudes, cultural beliefs (family influence on health, health system distrust, cancer fatalism, skin cancer misconceptions), and health literacy. METHODS We used a study website to inform primary care patients in Albuquerque, NM about the benefits and drawbacks of MC1R testing. Website logon, request of a saliva test kit, and return of the test kit (yes vs. no) were primary assessments of study interest and uptake. RESULTS Of 499 participants provided with a test offer, 33% requested and returned the test. Lower family influence on participants' health was an important factor both overall and within ethnicity subgroups, and may indicate that primary care patients interested in skin cancer genetic testing see themselves as proactive health seekers, independent from family encouragement. Lower self-efficacy for skin cancer prevention was also an important characteristic of those who tested. CONCLUSION As evidence for common genetic markers for skin cancer accumulates, these findings suggest characteristics of those most likely to pursue genetic testing for skin cancer risk.

Abstract
Skin cancer is an important health problem worldwide among cancer types and results in death at a minimum level in the case of early diagnosis. Therefore, the application of prevention programs is vital. Nurses by definition take responsibility for programs in prevention, early diagnosis, and screening for cancer. This study was conducted to determine the extent of skin cancer knowledge and protective behaviors among nursing students in the West Black Sea Region of Turkey. This cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted between February and May 2015. The study sample consisted of 965 nursing students. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire form. Nursing students had a moderate level of knowledge, with average scores of 24.35 ± 3.66. The knowledge levels of first-year students were lowest compared with other years. It was determined that, among nursing students, the percentage of "negative behaviors" in response to skin cancer protective behaviors was higher than for "positive behaviors." The results of this study highlight the knowledge level and skin cancer protective behaviors of nursing students. Training, seminars, and workshops that teach about risk factors, early detection, protective behaviors, and skin self-examination skills could increase the knowledge level of nursing students.

Abstract
Objectives Despite the substantial solar ultraviolet radiation experienced by Latino day laborers, little attention has been given to factors that are associated with sun protective behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine psychological and nonpsychological predictors of sun protective behaviors among Latino day laborers. Methods This cross-sectional study included a nonrandom sample of 137 Latino day laborers recruited from Mississippi and Illinois. Participants completed a self-report survey instrument, available in English and Spanish, on sun protective behaviors. Results Multivariate regression results showed that sun protective behaviors were significantly greater among Latino day laborers: (a) who had greater perceptions that their supervisor also engaged in sun protective behaviors (β = 0.25, p ≤ 0.01); (b) who reported higher levels of health literacy (β = 0.23, p ≤ 0.001); (c) who have greater knowledge of skin cancer risk factors (β = 0.21, p ≤ 0.01); and (d) who have skin tone that was self-perceived to be more prone to sunburns (β = 0.19, p ≤ 0.01). Conclusions Latino day laborers possess marginal levels of skin cancer knowledge and engage minimally in sun protective behaviors. Skin cancer prevention interventions are warranted for this high-risk group, particularly in the locations in which Latino day laborers work.
