Physiologic impact of 2-chlorophenol on denitrification process in mixture with different electron sources

How halogenated aromatic compounds affect the electron supply and consumption in glucose supported denitrification?

Halogenated aromatic compounds possess bidirectional effects on denitrifying bio-electron behavior, providing electrons and potentially interfering with electron consumption. This study selected the typical 4-chlorophenol (4-CP, 0-100 mg/L) to explore its impact mechanism on glucose-supported denitrification. When COD(glucose)/COD(4-CP)=28.70-3.59, glucose metabolism remained the dominant electron supply process, although its removal efficiency decreased to 73.84-49.66 %. When COD(glucose)/COD(4-CP)=2.39-1.43, 4-CP changed microbial carbon metabolism priority by inhibiting the abundance of glucose metabolizing enzymes, gradually replacing glucose as the dominant electron donor. Moreover, 5-100 mg/L 4-CP reduced adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by 15.52-24.67 % and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) by 31.13-63.47 %, causing severe lipid peroxidation, thus inhibiting the utilization efficiency of glucose. Activated by glucose, 4-CP dechlorination had stronger electron consumption ability than NO2--N reduction (NO3--N > 4-CP > NO2--N), combined with the decreased nirS and nirK genes abundance, resulting in NO2--N accumulation. Compared with the blank group (0 mg/L 4-CP), 5-40 mg/L and 60-100 mg/L 4-CP reduced the secretion of cytochrome c and flavin adenine dinucleotides (FAD), respectively, further decreasing the electron transfer activity of denitrification system. Micropruina, a genus that participated in denitrification based on glucose, was gradually replaced by Candidatus_Microthrix, a genus that possessed 4-CP degradation and denitrification functions after introducing 60-100 mg/L 4-CP.

Biotransformation of 17β-Estradiol through a Denitrifying Sludge

17β-estradiol (E2) is the natural estrogen with the most significant potential for endocrine disruption in the biota of aquatic ecosystems at trace concentrations. It is, therefore, essential to study treatments for water polluted with E2 that would guarantee its complete elimination and mineralization. Denitrification is a biological process shown to have the capacity to completely biodegrade drugs, such as ampicillin. This work is aimed to evaluate the biotransformation of 17β-estradiol by employing a denitrifying sludge. The assays performed were: (I) abiotic with 3.5 mg E2-C L^-1 and (II) denitrifying with 10 mg CH₃COO^--C L^-1 as the reference, 10 mg E2-C L^-1 as the sole electron donor, and a mixture of (mg L^-1) 10 E2-C with 10 CH₃COO^--C at C N^-1 of 1.1. The E2-C and NO₃^--N consumption efficiencies were greater than 99%, and HCO₃^--C and N₂ production yields were close to 1 in all assays. The denitrifying sludge could biodegrade up to 10 mg E2-C L^-1 as the sole electron donor and when mixed with 10 mg CH₃COO^--C L^-1. No intermediate metabolites were generated from the process.

Challenges and opportunities for the biodegradation of chlorophenols: Aerobic, anaerobic and bioelectrochemical processes

Chlorophenols (CPs) are highly toxic and refractory contaminants which widely exist in various environments and cause serious harm to human and environment health and safety. This review provides comprehensive information on typical CPs biodegradation technologies, the most green and benign ones for CPs removal. The known aerobic and anaerobic degradative bacteria, functional enzymes, and metabolic pathways of CPs as well as several improving methods and critical parameters affecting the overall degradation efficiency are systematically summarized and clarified. The challenges for CPs mineralization are also discussed, mainly including the dechlorination of polychlorophenols (poly-CPs) under aerobic condition and the ring-cleavage of monochlorophenols (MCPs) under anaerobic condition. The coupling of functional materials and degraders as well as the operation of sequential anaerobic-aerobic bioreactors and bioelectrochemical system (BES) are promising strategies to overcome some current limitations. Future perspective and research gaps in this field are also proposed, including the further understanding of microbial information and the specific role of materials in CPs biodegradation, the potential application of innovative biotechnologies and new operating modes to optimize and maximize the function of the system, and the scale-up of bioreactors towards the efficient biodegradation of CPs.
