Formation of Carbon Dioxide Attached Fragment Ions in the Fragmentation of Deprotonated Tolfenpyrad and Tebufenpyrad

Synthesis, acaricidal activity, and structure-activity relationships of novel phenyl trifluoroethyl thioether derivatives containing substituted benzyl groups

BACKGROUND

To discover and develop novel acaricidal compounds, a series of 2-fluoro-4-methyl/chlorine-5-((2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)thio)aniline/phenol compounds containing N/O-benzyl moieties were synthesized based on lead compound LZ-1.

RESULTS

The activity of these compounds against carmine spider mites (Tetranychus cinnabarinus) was determined using the leaf-spray method. Bioassays indicated that most of the designed target compounds possessed moderate to excellent acaricidal activity against adult T. cinnabarinus. The median lethal concentrations of 25b and 26b were 0.683 and 2.448 mg L-1 against adult mites, respectively; exceeding those of bifenazate (7.519 mg L-1 ) and lead compound LZ-1(3.658 mg L-1 ). Compound 25b exhibited 100% mortality in T. cinnabarinus larvae at 10 mg L-1 .

CONCLUSION

Continuing the study of these compounds in field trials, we compared the efficacy of mite killing by compound 25b with the commercial pesticide spirodiclofen and showed that mite control achieved 95.9% and 83.0% lethality at 10 and 22 days post-treatment. In comparison, spirodiclofen showed 92.7% lethality at 10 days and 77.2% lethality at 22 days post-treatment at a concentration of 100 mg L-1 . Results showed that 25b produced more facile and long-lasting control against T. cinnabarinus than the commercial acaricide spirodiclofen. Density functional theory analysis and electrostatic potential calculations of various molecular substitutions suggested some useful models to achieve other highly active miticidal compounds. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Intramolecular interactions and the neutral loss of ammonia from collisionally activated, protonated ω-aminoalkyl-3-hydroxyfurazans

Gas phase fragmentation reactions of monoprotonated 4-(3-aminopropyl)- and 4-(4-aminobutyl)-3-hydroxyfurazan were investigated to examine potential interactions between functional groups. The two heterocyclic alkyl amines were ionized by electrospray ionization (ESI, positive mode) and fragmented using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The fragmentation pathways were characterized using pseudo MS3 experiments, precursor-ion scans, and density functional computations. For both heterocyclic ions, loss of ammonia was the only fragmentation process observed at low collision energies. Computational analysis indicated that the most feasible mechanism was intramolecular nucleophilic displacement of ammonia from the protonated ω-aminoalkyl side chain by N5 of the furazan ring. The alkylated nitrogen in the resulting bicyclic product ion facilitated N-O bond cleavage; subsequent neutral losses of nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) occurred by homolytic bond cleavages. Next in the multistep sequence, neutral loss of ethylene from a radical cation was observed. A less favorable, competing fragmentation pathway of protonated 4-(3-aminopropyl)-3-hydroxyfurazan was consistent with cleavage of the 3-hydroxyfurazan ring and losses of NO and CO. Overall, the similar fragmentation behavior found for protonated 4-(3-aminopropyl)- and 4-(4-aminobutyl)-3-hydroxyfurazan differed from that previously characterized for furazan analogs with shorter alkyl chains. These observations demonstrate that a small change in the structure of multifunctional, heterocyclic alkyl amines may significantly influence interactions between distinct functional groups and the nature of the fragmentation process.

An intriguing "reversible reaction" in the fragmentation of deprotonated dicamba and benzoic acid in a Q-orbitrap mass spectrometer: Loss and addition of carbon dioxide

RATIONALE

Loss of carbon dioxide is an important characteristic fragmentation reaction of deprotonated benzoic acid and its derivatives in electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. However, researchers have rarely noticed or believed that the loss of carbon dioxide in multistage mass spectrometry is a "reversible reaction," that is, the fragment anion generated by carbon dioxide loss can capture another carbon dioxide to regenerate its precursor ion.

METHODS

The fragmentation of the [M - H]^- ions of dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid) and benzoic acid was performed with an electrospray ionization hybrid quadrupole-orbitrap mass spectrometer. The structural confirmation of the precursor ions and their product ions was supported by accurate mass (elemental composition) analysis. Pseudo-MS³ experiments (in-source collision-induced dissociation as MS² ) and isotope labelling experiments were used to confirm the addition of carbon dioxide to the product ions in MS² .

RESULTS

In the fragmentation of deprotonated dicamba (m/z 219), the relative abundance of the precursor ion does not decrease significantly or even increases as the collision energy increases. When the m/z 145 and 175 product ions were isolated in the mass analyzer, the ions 44 m/z units larger (m/z 189 and 219) were generated spontaneously, indicating the formation of carbon dioxide adduct ions. In the fragmentation of deprotonated [carboxyl-¹³ C]-benzoic acid (m/z 122), a deprotonated [carboxyl-¹² C]-benzoic acid ion (m/z 121) was generated which was derived from ¹³ CO₂ loss and ¹² CO₂ addition. The isotope labelling experiment further supports the formation of CO₂ -attached ions in the fragmentation of deprotonated benzoic acids.

CONCLUSIONS

Under collisional activation, deprotonated dicamba and benzoic acids easily undergo carbon dioxide loss, but the decarboxylated product anions have an appropriate nucleophilicity to carbon dioxide and they can capture a background carbon dioxide molecule remaining in the vacuum system to regenerate the precursor ions. This study provides a new and deeper understanding of the gas-phase chemistry of deprotonated benzoic acid derivatives in mass spectrometry.
