Multiple Fano resonances in bimetallic layered nanostructures

Research Progress of Plasmonic Nanostructure-Enhanced Photovoltaic Solar Cells

Enhancement of the electromagnetic properties of metallic nanostructures constitute an extensive research field related to plasmonics. The latter term is derived from plasmons, which are quanta corresponding to longitudinal waves that are propagating in matter by the collective motion of electrons. Plasmonics are increasingly finding wide application in sensing, microscopy, optical communications, biophotonics, and light trapping enhancement for solar energy conversion. Although the plasmonics field has relatively a short history of development, it has led to substantial advancement in enhancing the absorption of the solar spectrum and charge carrier separation efficiency. Recently, huge developments have been made in understanding the basic parameters and mechanisms governing the application of plasmonics, including the effects of nanoparticles' size, arrangement, and geometry and how all these factors impact the dielectric field in the surrounding medium of the plasmons. This review article emphasizes recent developments, fundamentals, and fabrication techniques for plasmonic nanostructures while investigating their thermal effects and detailing light-trapping enhancement mechanisms. The mismatch effect of the front and back light grating for optimum light trapping is also discussed. Different arrangements of plasmonic nanostructures in photovoltaics for efficiency enhancement, plasmonics' limitations, and modeling performance are also deeply explored.

Multiple Fano Resonances with Tunable Electromagnetic Properties in Graphene Plasmonic Metamolecules

Multiple Fano resonances (FRs) can be produced by destroying the symmetry of structure or adding additional nanoparticles without changing the spatial symmetry, which has been proved in noble metal structures. However, due to the disadvantages of low modulation depth, large damping rate, and broadband spectral responses, many resonance applications are limited. In this research paper, we propose a graphene plasmonic metamolecule (PMM) by adding an additional 12 nanodiscs around a graphene heptamer, where two Fano resonance modes with different wavelengths are observed in the extinction spectrum. The competition between the two FRs as well as the modulation depth of each FR is investigated by varying the materials and the geometrical parameters of the nanostructure. A simple trimer model, which emulates the radical distribution of the PMM, is employed to understand the electromagnetic field behaviors during the variation of the parameters. Our proposed graphene nanostructures might find significant applications in the fields of single molecule detection, chemical or biochemical sensing, and nanoantenna.

Linearly Tunable Fano Resonance Modes in a Plasmonic Nanostructure with a Waveguide Loaded with Two Rectangular Cavities Coupled by a Circular Cavity

Linear tunability has important applications since it can be realized by using linear control voltage and can be used conveniently without requiring nonlinear scale. In this paper, a kind of plasmonic nanostructure with a waveguide loaded with two rectangular cavities coupled by a circular cavity is proposed to produce four Fano resonance modes. The transfer matrix theory is employed to analyze the coupled-waveguide-cavity system. By analyzing the property of each single cavity, it reveals that the Fano resonances are originated from the coupling effect of the narrow modes in the metal-core circular cavity and the broad modes in the rectangular cavities. Owing to the interference of different modes, Fano peaks have different sensitivities on the cavity parameters, which can provide important guidance for designing Fano-resonance structures. Furthermore, adjusting the orientation angle of the metal core in the circular cavity can easily tune the line profile of Fano resonance modes in the structure. Especially, the figure of merit (FoM) increases linearly with the orientation angle and has a maximum of 8056. The proposed plasmonic system has the advantage of high transmission, ultracompact configuration, and easy integration, which can be applied in biochemical detecting or sensing, ultra-fast switching, slow-light technologies, and so on.
