Graphene-based porous nanohybrid architectures for adsorptive and photocatalytic abatement of volatile organic compounds

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represent a considerable threat to humans and ecosystems. Strategic remediation techniques for the abatement of VOCs are immensely important and immediately needed. Given a unique set of optical, mechanical, electrical, and thermal characteristics, inimitable surface functionalities, porous structure, and substantial specific surface area, graphene and derived nanohybrid composites have emerged as exciting candidates for abating environmental pollutants through photocatalytic degradation and adsorptive removal. Graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) containing oxygenated function entities, i.e., carbonyl, hydroxyl, and carboxylic groups, provide anchor and dispersibility of their surface photocatalytic nanoscale particles and adsorptive sites for VOCs. Therefore, it is meaningful to recapitulate current state-of-the-art research advancements in graphene-derived nanostructures as prospective platforms for VOCs degradation. Considering this necessity, this work provides a comprehensive and valuable insight into research progress on applying graphene-based nanohybrid composites for adsorptive and photocatalytic abatement of VOCs in the aqueous media. First, we present a portrayal of graphene-based nanohybrid based on their structural attributes (i.e., pore size, specific surface area, and other surface features to adsorb VOCs) and structure-assisted performance for VOCs abatement by graphene-based nanocomposites. The adsorptive and photocatalytic potentialities of graphene-based nanohybrids for VOCs are discussed with suitable examples. In addition to regeneration, reusability, and environmental toxicity aspects, the challenges and possible future directions of graphene-based nanostructures are also outlined towards the end of the review to promote large-scale applications of this fascinating technology.

Ultrasound Assisted Synthesis of Gadolinium Oxide-Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 Nanocomposites and Their Optimization for Photocatalytic Degradation of Methyl Orange Using Response Surface Methodology

An ultrasound-assisted method was used to prepare gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3)-zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8 nanocomposites. The surface morphology, particle size, and properties of the Gd2O3-ZIF-8 nanocomposites were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The synthesized Gd2O3-ZIF-8 nanocomposites were used as a catalyst to degrade methyl orange (MO) under UV light irradiation at 254 nm. The color of the aqueous MO dye solution during photocatalytic degradation was examined using color spectroscopy. Response surface methodology (RSM) using a four-factor Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to design the experiments and optimize the photocatalytic degradation of MO. The significance of the experimental factors and their interactions were determined using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The efficiency of Gd2O3-ZIF-8 nanocomposites for the photocatalytic degradation of MO reached 98.05% within 40 min under UV irradiation at 254 nm under the experimental conditions of pH 3.3, 0.4 g/L catalyst dose, 0.0630 mM MO concentration, and 431.79 mg/L H2O2 concentration. The kinetics study showed that the MO photocatalytic degradation followed a pseudo-first-order reaction rate law.

Modeling and optimization of Photocatalytic Decolorization of binary dye solution using graphite electrode modified with Graphene oxide and TiO2

In this paper, the experimental design methodology was employed for modeling and optimizing the operational parameters of the photocatalytic degradation of a binary dye solution using a fixed photocatalytic compound. The compound used was modified graphite electrode (GE) with graphene oxide (GO) on which TiO₂ nanoparticles were immobilized. GO nanoparticle was deposited on graphite electrode (GO-GE) using electrochemical approach. TiO₂ nanoparticles were immobilized on GO-GE by solvent evaporation method. A binary solution containing mixture of methylene blue (MB) and acid red 14 (AR14) was chosen as dye model. The degradation intermediates were detected and analyzed using gas chromatography. Effect of different factors on the photocatalytic decolorization efficiency was investigated and optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The obtained results indicated that the prepared TiO₂-GO-CE can decolorize MB with high efficiency (93.43%) at pH 11, dye concentration of 10 mg/L and 0.04 g of immobilized TiO₂ on the GO fabricated plates after 120 min of photocatalytic process. It was demonstrated that by modifying GE with GO the stability of the electrode was remarkably enhanced. The ANOVA results (R² = 0.97 and P value <0.0001 for MB, R² = 0.96 and P value <0.0001 for AR14) and numerical optimization showed that it is possible to make good prediction on decoloration behavior and save time and energy with less number of experiments using design of experiments (DoE) like the RSM.
