Sex, Resilience and Psychological Well-Being in Mexican University Students

Mental health is currently highly relevant in society and one of the factors that could contribute to its improvement is psychological well-being, hence the importance of conducting studies that focus on analyzing variables that predict psychological well-being. Therefore, the goal of this research is to use models of structural equations to analyze the relationships among the variables of sex and resilience for psychological well-being. The total sample was 1190 Mexican university students, with an average age of 20.66 years (SD = 1.89). The results indicate that the resilience factors (strength and confidence, family support, and social support) are the variables with the greatest explanatory power on psychological well-being. It also highlights the mediating capacity of the strength and confidence factor between the other two resilience factors (family support, social support) and perceived psychological well-being. The implications of the study are that sex and two of the dimensions of resilience (family support and social support) show an indirect and positive effect on the perception of psychological well-being through the strength and confidence factor. Therefore, when implementing interventions to improve psychological well-being, these factors should be considered in order to have a greater positive impact on the population that is being studied. Future research should replicate these findings in larger samples.

Identifying the Key Elements of Psychologically Safe Workplaces in Healthcare Settings

BACKGROUND

Psychological safety is a key concern in the workplace as organisations continue to see increases in psychological injuries that have significant ramifications on individuals and workplaces. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this issue in healthcare workforces facing extraordinary pressures. This preliminary study aims to enhance our understanding of the factors that healthcare workers value in relation to psychological safety in their respective healthcare settings.

METHODS

To achieve the research objective, qualitative self-reflection examples were conducted with 12 participants from various health professional backgrounds across public, private, and aged-care settings. The data obtained were thematically analysed using NVivo software (V 12), enabling the identification of key elements associated with psychologically safe workplaces.

RESULTS

The results revealed several significant elements that contribute to psychologically safe workplaces in healthcare settings. These elements include effective communication, organisational culture, leadership practices, performance feedback mechanisms, respect among colleagues, staff development opportunities, teamwork, and trust. The findings underscore the critical importance of these foundational elements in fostering psychological safety within healthcare.

CONCLUSION

This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by specifically identifying the key elements that healthcare workers value in terms of psychological safety. By exploring a wide range of healthcare professionals' perspectives, this research offers valuable insights into the unique challenges faced by healthcare workforces and the necessary conditions for fostering psychological safety. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the lessons they provide for healthcare employers, highlighting the potential for improving workplace wellbeing and performance.

The effect of health on economic growth: a meta-regression analysis

The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of health on economic growth based on 719 estimates obtained from 64 studies from all over the world. We find evidence of a publication bias towards a positive estimated effect of health on economic growth. After accounting for heterogeneity of the estimates, we show that health has a genuine positive effect on economic growth. Less developed countries seem to enjoy a higher effect of health on growth driven by the ongoing economic-demographic transition in those countries. The variation of the health effect on economic growth is also influenced by the available data, estimation procedure, model specification, publication channel, and country characteristics in each study. Studies that do not account for endogeneity seem to create an upward bias. Studies with more comprehensive variables seem to increase the estimated effect of health on growth. A higher number of years of compulsory education, longer working experience, and more favourable environmental conditions also increase the effect size. Overall, our results confirm the key role of the health factor in explaining economic growth across countries.

Adoption of Digital Technologies in Health Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Systematic Review of Early Scientific Literature

BACKGROUND

The COVID-19 pandemic is favoring digital transitions in many industries and in society as a whole. Health care organizations have responded to the first phase of the pandemic by rapidly adopting digital solutions and advanced technology tools.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this review is to describe the digital solutions that have been reported in the early scientific literature to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on individuals and health systems.

METHODS

We conducted a systematic review of early COVID-19-related literature (from January 1 to April 30, 2020) by searching MEDLINE and medRxiv with appropriate terms to find relevant literature on the use of digital technologies in response to the pandemic. We extracted study characteristics such as the paper title, journal, and publication date, and we categorized the retrieved papers by the type of technology and patient needs addressed. We built a scoring rubric by cross-classifying the patient needs with the type of technology. We also extracted information and classified each technology reported by the selected articles according to health care system target, grade of innovation, and scalability to other geographical areas.

RESULTS

The search identified 269 articles, of which 124 full-text articles were assessed and included in the review after screening. Most of the selected articles addressed the use of digital technologies for diagnosis, surveillance, and prevention. We report that most of these digital solutions and innovative technologies have been proposed for the diagnosis of COVID-19. In particular, within the reviewed articles, we identified numerous suggestions on the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools for the diagnosis and screening of COVID-19. Digital technologies are also useful for prevention and surveillance measures, such as contact-tracing apps and monitoring of internet searches and social media usage. Fewer scientific contributions address the use of digital technologies for lifestyle empowerment or patient engagement.

CONCLUSIONS

In the field of diagnosis, digital solutions that integrate with traditional methods, such as AI-based diagnostic algorithms based both on imaging and clinical data, appear to be promising. For surveillance, digital apps have already proven their effectiveness; however, problems related to privacy and usability remain. For other patient needs, several solutions have been proposed, such as telemedicine or telehealth tools. These tools have long been available, but this historical moment may actually be favoring their definitive large-scale adoption. It is worth taking advantage of the impetus provided by the crisis; it is also important to keep track of the digital solutions currently being proposed to implement best practices and models of care in future and to adopt at least some of the solutions proposed in the scientific literature, especially in national health systems, which have proved to be particularly resistant to the digital transition in recent years.
