Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the ability of preoperative dexterity assessments to predict postoperative success of inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) placement for erectile dysfunction. MATERIALS A timed 9-hole peg test, pinch and grip strength assessment, and Disabilities of the Arm Shoulder and Hand questionnaire were administered during the preoperative visit before IPP placement. In addition to standard preoperative workup, subjective handshake strength was recorded. Initial device-cycling and assessment of pump placement occurred 3-4 weeks after surgery. Three months postoperatively, a survey measuring satisfaction, difficulty of use, confidence, and erectile change was administered. Correlation between preoperative assessment variables and the postoperative questionnaire was assessed. RESULTS Twenty-nine patients were included. Mean age and BMI were 63.0 years and 30.7 kg/m2, respectively. Postoperatively, 65.5% of patients were satisfied; 41.4% reported no difficulty of use; and 75.8% were confident in device use by 1 month. 68.9% rated their erection as much improved or very much improved. Grip strength was inversely associated with difficulty of use (P = 0.037). There was an association between increased age and decreased confidence of device use (P = 0.068). Peg test, pinch strength, and handshake were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION Grip strength is a useful adjunct to assess manual functional status during preoperative IPP evaluation for patients whose manual functional status is unclear. These tests are inexpensive and easy to perform in the clinic.

Abstract
Surface electromyography (sEMG) non-invasively captures the electrical activity generated by muscle contractions, offering valuable insights into motion intentions. While sEMG has been widely applied to general gesture recognition in rehabilitation, there has been limited exploration of specific, intricate daily tasks, such as the pouring action. Pouring is a common yet complex movement requiring precise muscle coordination and control, making it an ideal focus for rehabilitation studies. This research proposes a granular computing-based deep learning approach utilizing ConvMixer architecture enhanced with feature fusion and granular computing to improve gesture recognition accuracy. Our findings indicate that the addition of hand-crafted features significantly improves model performance; specifically, the ConvMixer model's accuracy improved from 0.9512 to 0.9929. These results highlight the potential of our approach in rehabilitation technologies and assistive systems for restoring motor functions in daily activities.

Abstract
Background Sarcopenia is characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and poses a significant health challenge for older adults by increasing the risk of disability and decreasing quality of life. Yoga considers as a low-risk and beneficial exercise for older adults. This research aims to evaluate the potential of yoga practice as a preventive strategy against sarcopenia in Indonesian older adults. Methods An observational cross-sectional research was conducted including 41 older adults aged 60-87 years. The research focused on key biomarkers and functional assessments, including serum insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels, telomere length, gait speed, hand grip strength, and SARC-F questionnaire scores. Results The results showed that participants aged 71-80 years who practiced yoga for more than a year had significantly higher IGF-1 levels (p=0.04). While improvements in gait speed, hand grip strength, and SARC-F scores were observed, these changes were not statistically significant, and no significant differences were found in telomere length. Conclusion Yoga in older adults was associated with higher IGF-1 levels and potential improvements in upper and lower extremity strength, though these findings were not statistically significant and did not influence telomere length. Yoga practice shows potential as an emerging adjuvant option but can not be applied as a single strategy for sarcopenia prevention in older adults.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to assess the impact of a 12-week intervention of two 20-min sessions per week, combining aerobic exercise with whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS), on physical and cognitive performance in the elderly. Methods: A total of 61 participants (age = 71 ± 5.64 years), healthy or at risk for dementia, were randomly assigned to an experimental training group (ETG, n = 33) and a control group (CON, n = 28). Participants underwent 20-min aerobic training sessions, with intensity increasing from 60% to 80% of heart rate reserve (HRR), with and without continuous WB-EMS stimulation (35 Hz, 350 μs). Results: Significant time/effects for both the ETG and CON were found in the physical performance tests, with significant time*group interactions favoring the ETG for the arm curl test (p < 0.001) and the sit-to-stand test, with significant differences between groups (p = 0.001), as well as for the hand grip test (p < 0.001) and the 6-min walking test (p < 0.001), with significant time*group interactions (p = 0.003). Both groups improved their performance on the soda pop test (p < 0.001). ETG outperformed CON in memory performance (PROSA, p = 0.046; RAVLT immediate recall, p < 0.001) and on selective attention and visuospatial processing (attention matrices, p = 0.014). Some cognitive tests showed no significant improvement, likely due to the short intervention period for cognitive function (MMSE, p = 0.628; TMT, p = 0.698; Stroop error, p = 0.188) or memory performance (PROSA, p = 0.338). Conclusion: The absence of decline suggests a protective effect of physical activity. WB-EMS, combined with aerobic training, enhances the benefits of physical activity and helps counteract cognitive decline in older adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As individuals age, they experience a gradual decline in strength, flexibility, and precision control. While resistance training has shown positive effects on aging, little is known about how beneficial handicrafts could be in effectively promoting motor improvements in aging. This study aimed to compare manual precision, manual grip strength, and upper limb flexibility among three groups of older adult women: (a) regular practitioners of resistance training, (b) regular practitioners of handicrafts, and (c) insufficiently active participants who did not engage in either regular resistance training or handicraft practice. METHODS A total of 30 women (mean age = 67.86, SD = 7.01) were divided equally into the three groups (n = 10 per group). The participants were asked to perform a manual manipulative precision test, a manual grip strength test, and an upper limb flexibility test. RESULTS The participants in the resistance training group exhibited superior precision and strength compared to those in the handicraft group, as well as better precision, strength, and flexibility compared to the control group participants. The handicraft group demonstrated better precision and upper limb flexibility compared to the control group. CONCLUSION Therefore, while resistance training was particularly beneficial for improving these motor skills, engaging in handicrafts also proved to be an effective means of maintaining and/or enhancing certain important motor abilities.

Abstract
Objectives The burden of pain in middle-aged and older adults is considerable and significantly increases healthcare expenditures. We aimed to investigate the roles of handgrip strength (HGS) weakness and asymmetry in predicting pain across four nationally representative cohorts. Methods This longitudinal study utilized data from four major surveys: the Health and Retirement Study (HRS); the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA); the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE); and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Multivariable cubic regression splines were employed to visually explore the nonlinear associations between HGS and pain in each cohort. The Cox proportional hazard model was applied to analyze the independent and combined relationship between HGS weakness and asymmetry and pain risk. Results We included 41,171 participants in the final analysis, with a mean follow-up period of 4.68 ± 2.61 years (50.7% female, mean age 64.3 ± 9.3 years). No nonlinear relationship was found between HGS and pain incidence (nonlinear p < 0.05 in ELSA and SHARE; >0.05 in CHARLS and HRS). After adjustment, the highest quartile groups had a significantly reduced risk of pain compared to the lowest quartile groups across all cohorts, with hazard ratios of 0.81 (0.74, 0.89) in CHARLS, 0.86 (0.77, 0.97) in HRS, 0.88 (0.77, 0.98) in ELSA, and 0.78 (0.73, 0.84) in SHARE. Participants with normal HGS had approximately 20% lower risk of pain compared to those with weak HGS. Each 5 kg increase in HGS was associated with decreased hazard ratios for pain: 0.95 (0.93, 0.97) in CHARLS, 0.97 (0.94, 0.99) in HRS, 0.96 (0.94, 0.99) in ELSA, and 0.94 (0.92, 0.95) in SHARE. The association between HGS asymmetry and pain risk was significant only in a few cohorts (HRS at 10%, 1.10 (1.03, 1.18); SHARE at 30%, 1.12 (1.05, 1.21)). No interaction effect between HGS weakness and asymmetry on pain risk was observed (all p-values for interaction >0.05). Conclusions Our findings suggest that HGS can be used as an independent predictor of pain in middle-aged and older European, American, and Chinese populations. However, our results do not support the use of HGS asymmetry as an independent predictor of pain risk. It is necessary to establish appropriate criteria for HGS asymmetry across different populations. The use of both weak HGS and asymmetry as predictors of health outcomes requires further validation in more diverse populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine better in-office measures for artificial urinary sphincter outcomes, we investigated the ability of preoperative timed peg-transfer, pinch strength, grip strength, and Disabilities of the Arm Shoulder and Hand Outcome questionnaire in predicting postoperative satisfaction, confidence, and ease of use of artificial urinary sphincter placement for stress urinary incontinence. MATERIALS AND METHODS A timed 9-hole peg test, pinch and grip strength assessment, and upper extremity questionnaire were administered during the preoperative visit before sphincter placement. In addition to standard preoperative workup, short-form International Consultation of Incontinence Questionnaire and physician handshake were recorded. Activation occurred 6 weeks after surgery along with assessment of adequacy of pump placement. Three months from surgery a repeat incontinence questionnaire and a survey measuring satisfaction, difficulty of use, and confidence were given. Correlation between preoperative assessment variables and the postoperative questionnaire was assessed. RESULTS Thirty-nine patients were included. Average age and body mass index were 68.8 years and 28.8 kg/m2, respectively. Prior prostatectomy accounted for 92.3% of patients, and 46.2% had prior pelvic radiation. Postoperatively, 59.0% of patients were very satisfied; 64.1% of patients reported no difficulty of use; 53.8% felt confidence within 1 day; and 66.7% had much better bladder control. Average pad improvement count was 5.3. Pinch test was associated with satisfaction (P = .011) while peg test was associated with confidence (P = .049). Handshake and upper extremity questionnaire were not significant. CONCLUSION The pinch and 9-hole peg transfer tests are cost-effective and easily performed adjuncts that could be used during artificial urinary sphincter evaluation for patients with unclear manual functional status.

Abstract
Manual motor performance declines with age, but the extent to which age influences the acquisition of new skills remains a topic of debate. Here, we examined whether older healthy adults show less training-dependent performance improvements during a single session of a bimanual pinch task than younger adults. We also explored whether physical and cognitive factors, such as grip strength or motor-cognitive ability, are associated with performance improvements. Healthy younger (n = 16) and older (n = 20) adults performed three training blocks separated by short breaks. Participants were tasked with producing visually instructed changes in pinch force using their right and left thumb and index fingers. Task complexity was varied by shifting between bimanual mirror-symmetric and inverse-asymmetric changes in pinch force. Older adults generally displayed higher visuomotor force tracking errors during the more complex inverse-asymmetric task compared to younger adults. Both groups showed a comparable net decrease in visuomotor force tracking error over the entire session, but their improvement trajectories differed. Young adults showed enhanced visuomotor tracking error only in the first block, while older adults exhibited a more gradual improvement over the three training blocks. Furthermore, grip strength and performance on a motor-cognitive test battery scaled positively with individual performance improvements during the first block in both age groups. Together, the results show subtle age-dependent differences in the rate of bimanual visuomotor skill acquisition, while overall short-term learning ability is maintained.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Skeletal muscle strength decline is strongly associated with inflammation. While previous research has confirmed that diet can modulate chronic inflammation, little is known about the relationship between an anti-inflammatory dietary pattern and muscle strength. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between an anti-inflammatory dietary pattern and handgrip strength decline in a large-scale adult population. METHODS During a median follow-up period of 3 years, this prospective cohort study was carried out between 2013 and 2018 and included 2840 participants (60.2% men). Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire at baseline, and handgrip strength was measured annually with a handheld digital dynamometer. The dietary inflammatory potential score was calculated using white blood cell count and hypersensitive C-reactive protein as inflammatory markers, and was determined using reduced rank regression and stepwise linear regression. Multivariable linear regression models were used to estimate the association between the dietary inflammatory potential score and the annualized change in handgrip strength and weight-adjusted handgrip strength. RESULTS After adjusting for multiple confounding factors, significant associations between the dietary inflammatory potential score and the annualized change in handgrip strength and weight-adjusted handgrip strength in women, with values of - 0.8322 kg (95% confidence interval [CI] - 1.6405, - 0.0238; P < 0.0408) and - 0.0171 kg/kg (95% CI - 0.0310, - 0.0032; P < 0.0158), respectively. However, no significant differences were observed between the dietary inflammatory potential score and the annualized change in handgrip strength and weight-adjusted handgrip strength in men, with values of 0.1578 kg (95% CI - 0.6107, 0.9261; P < 0.6874) and - 0.0014 kg/kg (95% CI - 0.0115, 0.0088; P < 0.7933), respectively. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that consuming an anti-inflammatory dietary pattern could be a protective strategy against the decline in skeletal muscle strength in women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During the aging process, cognitive functions and performance of the muscular and neural system show signs of decline, thus making the elderly more susceptible to disease and death. These alterations, which occur with advanced age, affect functional performance in both the lower and upper members, and consequently human motor functions. Objective measurements are important tools to help understand and characterize the dysfunctions and limitations that occur due to neuromuscular changes related to advancing age. Therefore, the objective of this study is to attest to the difference between groups of young and old individuals through manual movements and whether the combination of features can produce a linear correlation concerning the different age groups. METHODS This study counted on 99 participants, these were divided into 8 groups, which were grouped by age. The data collection was performed using inertial sensors (positioned on the back of the hand and on the back of the forearm). Firstly, the participants were divided into groups of young and elderly to verify if the groups could be distinguished through the features alone. Following this, the features were combined using the linear discriminant analysis (LDA), which gave rise to a singular feature called the LDA-value that aided in verifying the correlation between the different age ranges and the LDA-value. RESULTS The results demonstrated that 125 features are able to distinguish the difference between the groups of young and elderly individuals. The use of the LDA-value allows for the obtaining of a linear model of the changes that occur with aging in the performance of tasks in line with advancing age, the correlation obtained, using Pearson's coefficient, was 0.86. CONCLUSION When we compare only the young and elderly groups, the results indicate that there is a difference in the way tasks are performed between young and elderly individuals. When the 8 groups were analyzed, the linear correlation obtained was strong, with the LDA-value being effective in obtaining a linear correlation of the eight groups, demonstrating that although the features alone do not demonstrate gradual changes as a function of age, their combination established these changes.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effects of exergames added to a conventional physical therapy (CPT) program on functional fitness and dynamometric muscle performance for the sit-to-stand (STS) maneuver in older adults and to compare their results concerning a CPT-only intervention. Materials and Methods: Fifty independent older adults were randomly assigned to CPT and exergames (CPT+ExG group; n = 25; age = 71.8 ± 6.8 years) or CPT alone (CPT group; n = 25; age = 71.3 ± 7.4 years). CPT was performed twice a week (60 min/session) for 8 weeks. The CPT+ExG group added exergames for 30 minutes in each session. The Senior Fitness Test was applied, considering the 30-second chair stand test as the primary outcome. Additionally, dynamometric muscle performance during the STS maneuver was assessed. Results: The CPT+ExG group improved the 30-second chair stand (lower body strength), back scratch (upper body flexibility), and 8-foot up-and-go (agility/dynamic balance) tests (all P < 0.05). Both groups improved the kinetic dynamometric variables peak force, peak power, and total work (all P < 0.05). Also, both groups improved the 30-second arm curl test (upper body strength) (P < 0.05), although the increase was higher in the CPT+ExG group compared with the CPT group (time × group; P < 0.05). Conclusion: Adding exergames to a CPT program only significantly increases upper limb strength compared with CPT alone. The findings of this study have implications for the design of future exergame interventions focused on improving STS maneuver performance in older adults.

Abstract
Age-related effects on motor asymmetry provide insight into changes in cortical activation during aging. To investigate potential changes in manual performance associated with aging, we conducted the Jamar hand function test and the Purdue Pegboard test on young and older adults. All tests indicated reduced motor asymmetry in the older group. Further analysis suggested that a significant decline in dominant (right) hand function resulted in less asymmetric performance in older adults. The finding is inconsistent with the application of the HAROLD model in the motor domain, which assumes improved performance in the non-dominant hand, leading to a reduction of motor asymmetry in older adults. Based on the manual performance in young and older adults, it is suggested that aging reduces manual asymmetry in both force production and manual dexterity due to the reduced performance of the dominant hand.

Abstract
Background Manual dexterity is the ability to manipulate objects using the hands and fingers for a specific task. Although manual dexterity is widely investigated in the general and special population at all ages, numerous aspects still remain to be explored in children. The aim of this study was to assess the presence of the training effect of the execution of the Grooved Pegboard test (GPT) and to measure the performance of the GPT in dual-task (DT), i.e., during a motor task and a cognitive task. Methods In this observational, cross-sectional study manual dexterity was assessed in children aged between 6 and 8. The procedure consisted of two phases: (1) the execution of five consecutive trials of the GPT to evaluate the training effect; (2) the execution of one trial of the GPT associated with a motor task (finger tapping test, GPT-FTT), and one trial of the GPT associated with a cognitive task (counting test, GPT-CT) to evaluate the performance in DT. Results As for the training effect, a significant difference (p < 0.001) between the five trials of the GPT (i.e., GPT1, GPT2, GPT3, GPT4, GPT5) was detected. In particular, we found a significant difference between GPT1 and GPT3 (p < 0.05), GPT1 and GPT4 (p < 0.001), and GPT1 and GPT5 (p < 0.001), as well as between GPT2 and GPT4 (p < 0.001), and GPT2 and GPT5 (p < 0.001).As for the performance in DT, no differences between the best trial of the GPT (i.e., GPT5) and both the GPT-FTT and GPT-CT was found. Conclusion Our findings suggest that the execution of the GPT in children has a training effect up to the third consecutive trial. Furthermore, the administration of the GPT in DT does not affect GPT performance.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN This is an observational cross-sectional study. BACKGROUND To assess dexterity and hand function, it is important to use validated performance-based outcome measures, such as the Jebsen Taylor Hand Function test (JTHFT). There is no previous study that has used this test in asymptomatic individuals to establish normal values for the Brazilian population, or to assess its reliability. PURPOSE The first aim of the study was to provide a standardized illustrated manual of the Brazilian version of the JTHFT. The second aim was to evaluate JTHFT test-retest reliability in asymptomatic adults, and the third aim was to determine normative values. METHODS This study consists of 236 individuals aged 18-60 years, of both sexes, asymptomatic for pain or injury in the upper limbs. An illustrated manual of instructions was developed in Portuguese, test-retest reliability was assessed by determining the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and to evaluate the average of the correlations between the items, the Cronbach Alpha coefficient was used. The standard error of measurements of the test and retest of the JTHFT subtasks was also performed. RESULTS The Cronbach Alpha coefficient, resulted in acceptable average values 0.75 for the dominant hand and 0.76 for the nondominant hand. JTHFT subtests reveal moderate to excellent test-retest reliability, varying from 0.53, 95% CI: 0.39-0.64; to 0.93, 95% CI: 0.91-0.95 for the dominant hand, and for the nondominant hand 0.66, 95%: 0.57-0.74; to 0.92, 95% CI: 0.90-0.94. CONCLUSION JTHFT is reliable for a Brazilian sample in terms of test-retest measures and can be used both in research and in clinical practice. A standardized illustrated manual of application was provided.

Abstract
The purpose was to evaluate selected physical tests in children and to compare the outcomes by sex. A cross-sectional study design was used to evaluate children 6-11 years who completed five physical tests: hand grip, vertical jump, sit and reach, Y-balance, and obstacle course (time and score). The outcome measures including test results were descriptively examined and compared by sex. The study participants consisted of 133 children (62 males and 71 females, with a median age of 7.8 years). Girls showed superior sit and reach performance (p = 0.002) compared with boys. Boys demonstrated better Y-balance scores (p = 0.007) and faster obstacle time (p = 0.042) than girls. Sex comparison within three age groups (6-<8 years, 8-<10 years, and 10-<12 years) showed that girls performed better on the sit and reach compared with boys in the in 6-<8 years (p = 0.009). Boys demonstrated higher Y-balance scores (p = 0.017) and faster obstacle time (p = 0.007) compared with girls in the 8-<10-year age group. These data will serve to guide future efforts to evaluate normative measures of physical literacy and guide targeted training interventions to promote sustained physical activity in children with deficits relative to their age and sex norms.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is an age-related neuromuscular disease characterized by substantial muscle atrophy, dynapenia and/or loss of physical function. Sarcopenia progression increases the risk for numerous negative events, including falls, disability, hospitalization, nursing home placement, and death. As such, this condition is recognized as an important topic in gerontology and geriatrics. The best approach to counteract the development and progression of sarcopenia is actively debated. Resistance training (RT) has received special attention in this context, owing to the large number of studies showing its ability to produce significant improvements in sarcopenia-related parameters. Recommendations to guide RT prescription for older adults with different conditions, including people who have traits of sarcopenia, have been published. Some authors have argued that RT guidelines for older adults are similar to one another, which may indicate that the presence of sarcopenia does not require specific physical exercise programs. However, older people with sarcopenia might present with peculiar physical, biomechanical, physiological, and psychosocial characteristics that, in our view, are not taken into adequate consideration in existing exercise guidelines. Here, we present evidence to support the view that RT prescription for older adults with sarcopenia is complex, multifactorial, and still needs more evidence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Comprehensive hand function in people with Parkinson disease (PD) has been underevaluated. The objectives were to compare self-perceived and objective hand functions of PD and controls, compare outcomes between more and less affected hand subgroups, and evaluate relationship between self-perceived and objective outcomes in subgroups. DESIGN A total of 165 PD and 82 healthy participants completed the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, Purdue Pegboard Test, grip strength test, and Manual Ability Measure-16 in a cross-sectional study. PD participants completed the Parkinson Disease Questionnaire-39. Associations between objective and self-perceived/quality of life outcomes in PD groups were analyzed, and nondominant and dominant more affected subgroups performance was compared. RESULTS PD participants had significantly worse performance in most Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test and all Purdue Pegboard Test items, lower Manual Ability Measure-16 scores, and poorer handgrip strength. Weak associations were found between dexterity, but not grip strength, and self-perceived functional hand ability and Parkinson Disease Questionnaire-39 scores in PD subgroups. For nondominant more affected subgroup, poorer dexterity was associated with better Parkinson Disease Questionnaire-39 Activity of Daily Living domain scores. CONCLUSION People with mild to moderate PD were shown to have poorer manual dexterity, reduced grip strength, and lower self-perceived functional hand ability than controls. Associations between dexterity and self-perceived outcomes highlight the importance of unimanual and bimanual training.

Abstract
This study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2014-2015 database to analyze the association between periodontitis and handgrip strength, a representative measure of hand impairment and function, in adults aged ≥30 years. The data of 5926 adults (male: 2766, females: 3160) who underwent handgrip strength and periodontal tissue examination and had neither rheumatoid arthritis nor osteoarthritis were analyzed. Handgrip strength was assessed using a digital grip strength dynamometer. The average values of the right handgrip strength, calculated separately by sex and age group (five 10-year age groups), were used as the cut-off for reduced handgrip strength. Periodontal status was evaluated using the Community Periodontal Index, defining scores ≥ 3 as periodontitis. Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to compare the differences in the prevalence of periodontitis according to handgrip strength. In the final regression model adjusted for risk factors for periodontitis, the likelihood of periodontitis decreased as the level of handgrip strength increased (p < 0.05). Therefore, this study suggests that handgrip strength may be a valuable indicator of periodontal health.

Abstract
In aging societies, physical activity may benefit functional fitness influencing the health of older people. The aim of this study was to explore the interrelation between age and perception of health and quality of life, and the mediating effects of functional fitness in older individuals. One hundred and sixty-six late middle-aged (55–64 years, young-old (65–74 years), and old (75–84 years) adults, divided into senior athletes (n = 44), physically active (n = 59), and sedentary individuals (n = 63) were evaluated for functional fitness (flexibility, strength, interlimb coordination, endurance) and physical (Physical Component Summary-PCS) and mental (Mental Component Summary-MCS) health and quality of life perception. Multiple mediation analyses were applied to assess the relationship between age and PCS and MCS indices and the role of functional fitness-related mediators. For MCS only, the mediation analysis showed a positive total and direct effect of age and a negative total indirect effect through mediators. No effects emerged for PCS. Despite a decline in their functional fitness, older individuals were able to maintain a mental health perception, also demonstrating how beneficial effects of physically active lifestyle on functional fitness can positively impact the cognitive-emotional dimension of mental health with advancing age.

Abstract
Hospitalization in older population leads to a decline in physical function, physical condition and independency. However, a scarce number of studies has addressed the effect of being in good physical condition on the risk of hospitalization and polypharmacy in older people. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between physical condition and other health factors, and the incidence of hospitalization and polypharmacy in Spanish older persons. For this cross-sectional study 102 community-dwelling persons aged 80 years or older who were being treated at three primary care centers. The data collected were number of hospitalizations and medications, dietary habits, nutrition status, quality of life, independence in activities of daily life, physical performance and associated genotype data. Scoring higher in the tests Chair stand and 8-Foot Up-and-go was found associated with reduced risks of hospitalization [OR = .45 (95% CI = .2, .99); OR .32 (95% CI = .12, .86)] and polypharmacy [OR = .36 (95% CI = .16, .8); OR= .28 (95% CI = .1, .78)]. The number of medications was also lower in individuals with a greater aerobic capacity and activities of daily life independence [OR = .28 (95% CI = .1, .78); OR = .37 (95% CI = .16, .82)]. No associations were found with the remaining physical performance tests or other factors assessed. Our findings point to benefits of greater strength, balance and aerobic capacity in terms of reducing the risk of hospitalization and polypharmacy.

Abstract
AIMS Many studies show that aerobic exercise combined with resistance training is beneficial for patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). The benefits of traditional Chinese exercise Baduanjin combined with an elastic band in this population are not known. To evaluate the effects of Baduanjin in conjunction with an elastic band on exercise capacity, physical function, muscle strength of the upper and lower extremities, quality of life (QoL), and exercise self-efficacy among CHF patients in a home-based setting. METHODS AND RESULTS A prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted in this study. A total of 136 CHF patients were randomly assigned to the exercise or the control group. Chronic heart failure patients in the exercise group received Baduanjin combined with elastic band and CHF community care, while those in the control group accepted CHF community care. The duration of the interventions was 24 weeks. The measured outcomes included exercise capacity, physical function, muscle strength of the upper and lower extremities, QoL, and exercise self-efficacy. A generalized estimating equation model was employed to examine the effects of Baduanjin combined with the elastic band on the outcome variables. Chronic heart failure patients showed significant improvements in physical performance testing (PPT) (P = 0.023), 30-s arm curl test (30ACT) (P = 0.035), 10 sit-stand-to-sit tests (STS10) (P = 0.017), 6-min walk test (6MWT) (P < 0.001), QoL (P < 0.001), and exercise self-efficacy (P = 0.009) in the exercise group, while these variables did not differ in the control group. There were also significant differences in these variables between the two groups at Weeks 12 and 24 (P < 0.05). There were significant group-by-time interactions in the exercise group, with enhancements in PPT (F = 5.40, P = 0.032), 6MWT (F = 9.04, P < 0.001), muscle strength in the 30ACT and STS10 (F = 5.32, P = 0.037; F = 6.69, P = 0.005), QoL (F = 6.69, P < 0.001), and self-efficacy (F = 4.60, P = 0.038) revealed in CHF patients in this group from baseline to Week 24. CONCLUSION Baduanjin combined with elastic band exercise may improve exercise capacity, physical function, muscle strength, QoL, and exercise self-efficacy for CHF patients in a home-based setting, which may be a complementary exercise model for home-based CHF patients who are clinically stable and cannot participate in centre-based exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programmes.

The Effects of Forearm Kinesio-Taping on Hand Grip Strength and Endurance in Female Squash Elites. Asian J Sports Med 2021. Abstract
Background: Hand grip plays a fundamental role in most daily and athletic activities of the upper extremities. Objectives: The study compared the effect of various methods of forearm Kinesio-taping (KT) on the hand grip strength and endurance of Iranian elite squash players during their sporting activities at different times. Methods: Thirty-three female squash players were assigned to a quasi-experimental study, and KT was applied on their dominant forearm (on the flexor area, on the extensor area, and placebo taping). Grip strength was evaluated before, immediately, 30, and 60 minutes after KT, and grip endurance was also assessed before and 60 minutes after KT using MIE digital grip analyzer. Friedman and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to analyze the results of grip strength, and ANOVA and the sample t-test were applied to analyze the grip endurance data. Results: The findings revealed no significant differences within the grip strength at different phases (P > 0.05). However, p values for the outcomes of KT on the flexor area, KT on the extensor area, and placebo mode were respectively 0.145, 0.178, 0.065 in each phase of the evaluation. A significant difference among KT groups and the LSD test revealed a significant increase in grip endurance in the mode of KT on the extensor area, whereas there have been no significant differences in grip endurance in KT on flexor (P = 0.785) and extensor (P = 0.457) areas. Conclusions: There was no obvious superiority of the various methods of forearm KT on grip strength at different times; nevertheless, KT was an efficient method for retaining grip endurance in squash players with no significant differences between the flexor and extensor locations.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) patients lead a sedentary lifestyle, being unable or unwilling to exercise conventionally, due to physical and mental limitations. The aim of this study was to assess the acute effects of a single session of whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) on the physical performances and serum levels of the neurotrophic factors in PD patients. Ten subjects (aged 72.60 ± 6.82) underwent 20 min of physical activity with superimposed WB-EMS and, after four weeks, the same protocol with no WB-EMS. WB-EMS was conducted with intermittent stimulation, with 4 s WB-EMS/4 s rest, at 85 Hz, 350 μs. A physical fitness assessment and blood samples collection, to evaluate neurotrophic factors' levels (BDNF, FGF21, proNGF, mNGF), were collected before and after the intervention. The RM-ANOVA showed significant improvements in sit-to-stand (p < 0.01), arm curl (p < 0.01), handgrip (p < 0.01) and soda pop test (p < 0.01) after the WB-EMS intervention. Higher proNFG serum levels were observed in the WB-EMS condition compared to the no WB-EMS after 60 min post-intervention (p = 0.0163). The effect of WB-EMS confirmed the electrostimulation ability to modulate the proNGF quantity. The positive impact of the WB-EMS protocol on physical functioning, and eye-hand coordination, makes this intervention a promising strategy to improve motor and non-motor symptoms in PD patients.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES The aim of this research was to investigate the relationships between objectively measured sleep duration and physical function in older adults. METHODS We recruited community-dwelling older adults aged ≥ 60 years old in Taipei City, Taiwan. Sleep duration was measured with accelerometers and recorded as the total hours of sleep per night for each participant. The following physical functions were assessed: 1) grip strength (measured by handgrip dynamometer), 2) balance (1-leg standing test), 3) lower body strength (5-timed chair stand), 4) basic mobility (timed up and go test), 5) gait speed (5-m walk test). The relationships between sleep duration and physical function outcomes were analyzed using generalized additive models, controlling for objectively measured sedentary behavior and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and other sociodemographic variables. RESULTS A total of 121 older adults (men = 28.9%; mean age = 70.0 ± 5.0 years) was included in this study. A positive association of sleep duration with grip strength was found after adjusting for covariates (P = .005). No significant associations were observed between sleep duration and the other physical function outcomes. CONCLUSIONS For older adults, lengthening their sleep duration may be helpful to enhance the grip strength. This result has implications for improving their health by targeting better performance in specific physical functions. Further studies of sleep duration and physical function among older adults should investigate the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
As longevity is increasing, the 65-year-old and older population is projected to increase in the next decades, as are the consequences of age-related muscle deterioration on the quality of life. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations of the ACTN3R577X polymorphism with quality of life and muscular strength in an older Spanish population. In total, 281 older adults participated in this study. Anthropometric measurements, chronic diseases, prescribed medications, quality of life, hand grip strength, and physical activity and nutritional status data were collected. ACTN3 R577X genotyping was determined using Taqman probes. Multivariate regression analysis revealed in adjusted model that, in men, the ACTN3 R577X genotype was significantly associated with hand grip strength (HGS), regression coefficient (β) = 1.23, p = 0.008, dimension 1 of the five-dimension questionnaire EuroQoL (EQ-5D, mobility), (β) = -1.44, p = 0.006, and clinical group risk (CGR) category (β) = -1.38, p = 0.006. In women, a marginal association between the ACTN3 R577X genotype and the CGR category was observed, with a regression coefficient of (β) = -0.97, (p = 0.024). Our findings suggest that the ACTN3 R577X genotype may influence the decline in muscle strength and quality of life in older Spanish adult males.

Abstract
To control hand movement, we have both vision and proprioception, or position sense. The brain is known to integrate these to reduce variance. Here we ask whether older adults integrate vision and proprioception in a way that minimizes variance as young adults do, and whether older subjects compensate for an imposed visuo-proprioceptive mismatch as young adults do. Ten healthy older adults (mean age 69) and 10 healthy younger adults (mean age 19) participated. Subjects were asked to estimate the position of visual, proprioceptive, and combined targets, with no direct vision of either hand. After a veridical baseline block, a spatial visuo-proprioceptive misalignment was gradually imposed by shifting the visual component forward from the proprioceptive component without the subject's awareness. Older subjects were more variable than young subjects at estimating both visual and proprioceptive target positions. Older subjects tended to rely more heavily on vision than proprioception compared to younger subjects. However, the weighting of vision vs. proprioception was correlated with minimum variance predictions for both older and younger adults, suggesting that variance-minimizing mechanisms are present to some degree in older adults. Visual and proprioceptive realignment were similar for young and older subjects in the misalignment block, suggesting older subjects are able to realign as much as young subjects. These results suggest that intact multisensory processing in older adults should be explored as a potential means of mitigating degradation in individual sensory systems.

Abstract
The motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) cause deterioration in manual dexterity. This deterioration affects independence in activities of daily living negatively. The loss of postural control, which occurs more frequently with disease progression, restricts physical functions and reduces mobility in patients with PD. Impaired postural control may affect distal mobility of an individual. The aim of this study was to investigate postural control and manual dexterity in individuals ≤ 65 and >65 years with PD and analyze the relationship between these variables according to age. Sixty-six individuals with PD participated in the study. The participants were categorized according to age (n = 29 for 65 years of age or younger and n = 37 for older). Manual dexterity (Dominant and Non-dominant hand) was assessed by the Nine Hole Peg Test (NHPT). Postural control was evaluated by the Limit of Stability Test (LoS) using a computerized balance measuring instrument. There was no statistically significant difference between the age groups on the combined dependent variables after controlling for disability, gender, weight, and height; F(7, 54) = 0.804, p = 0.587. Only LoS-Maximum Excursion was higher in the individuals ≤ 65 years (p = 0.035). Significant correlations were found between NHPT-Dominant and LoS-Reaction Time, LoS-Maximum Excursion; NHPT-Non-dominant and LoS-Reaction Time, LoS-Endpoint Excursion, LoS-Maximum Excursion in the older group (p < 0.05). There was no difference manual dexterity and postural control according to age except for LoS-Maximum Excursion. LoS-Maximum Excursion was higher in the young group. The manual dexterity was associated with postural control in individuals over 65 years of age with PD; however, not associated in younger individuals.

Abstract
Background: With advanced age, the progressive loss of muscle strength estimated by the handgrip strength (HGS) may result in a poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Studying this association becomes a vital area of research for promoting aging-well. The aim of this study was to examine the correlation between HRQoL and HGS among community-dwelling older adults above 60 years old.Methods: Participants comprised of 176 older adults (mean age: 68.15 ± 6.74). The HGS was tested with Jamar® Dynamometer, and the EuroQuol-5 Dimensions 5Levels (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire was used to assess HRQoL.Results: Both HGS and HRQoL were negatively correlated with age (p < .001). Lower values of HGS and HRQoL were recorded among older adults who had diagnosed with one or more chronic diseases (p < .001). Significant correlations were recorded between HGS and functioning, and subjective well-being domains of EQ-5D-5L. A relatively higher association was recorded between the functioning variables of EQ-5D-5L and HGS compared to subjective well- being variables.Conclusion: Handgrip strength is a simple and practical measure in identifying older adults at risk of physical decline. Maintaining handgrip strength may contribute to improving HRQoL, and can add an imperative dimension to promote aging-well in older adults ≥60 years old.

Abstract
This study aims toward an investigation and comparison of the digital force control and the brain activities of older adults and young groups during digital pressing tasks. A total of 15 young and 15 older adults were asked to perform force ramp tasks at different force levels with a custom pressing system. Near-infrared spectroscopy was used to collect the brain activities in the prefrontal cortex and primary motor area. The results showed that the force independence and hand function of the older adults were worse than that of the young adults. The cortical activations in the older adults were higher than those in the young group during the tasks. A significant hemodynamic between-group response and mild negative correlations between brain activation and force independence ability were found. Older adults showed poor force independence ability and manual dexterity and required additional brain activity to compensate for the degeneration.

Abstract
As the relationship between vitamin D and various diseases or health conditions has become known, interest in the contribution of vitamin D to overall health-related quality of life (QoL) has increased. We examined the relationship between vitamin D status and QoL in 273 participants aged 65 years and older. Serum levels of total calcium, phosphorus, intact parathyroid hormone, albumin, and 25-hydroxyvitaminD3 were analyzed. We also recruited data for QoL, physical activity, nutritional impairment, and muscular strength. Ninety percent of the subjects were classified as vitamin D deficient or insufficient. Participants with higher serum 25(OH)D3, calcium, phosphorous, and Alb levels were significantly less likely to self-report depression or anxiety after adjustment (p = 0.009, p = 0.005, p = 0.003, and p = 0.005, respectively). Additionally, we found an association between lower levels of albumin and self-reported problems with mobility or usual activities (p = 0.01). We also found associations between better muscle strength and higher levels of vitamin D, calcium, phosphorous, and albumin (p = 0.006, p = 0.003, p = 0.004 and p = 0.002, respectively). Overall, our data provide evidence that serum vitamin D and Alb levels are negatively related to self-reported anxiety or depression, usual activities, mobility, and three dimensions of QoL in older adults. Furthermore, vitamin D levels are positively related to hand grip strength in adults over 65 years old.

Abstract
Older adults are at increased risk of several cytochrome P450 (CYP) drug interactions that can result in drug toxicity, reduced pharmacological effect, and adverse drug reactions. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of potential CYP interactions referring to the most clinically relevant drugs and exploring the relationship between them and quality of life and physical performance in Spanish octogenarians. Institutionalized and community-dwelling octogenarians (n = 102) treated at three primary care centers, were recruited by a research nurse. Anthropometric measurements, chronic diseases, prescribed drugs, quality of life, physical performance, mobility skills, hand grip strength and cognitive status data were collected. Potential CYP drug-drug interactions (DDIs) were selected referring to the main CYP implicated in their metabolism. The 72.2% of recruited octogenarians presented potentially inappropriate CYP inhibitor-substrate or CYP inductor-substrate combinations. Analyzing the EuroQol Visual Analogue scale (EQ-VAS) results, patients with a potential CYP DDI perceived worse health status than patients without it (p = 0.004). In addition, patients with a potential CYP DDI presented worse exercise capacity, kinesthetic abilities, or mobility than those who didn’t present a potential interaction (p = 0.01, p = 0.047, and p = 0.02, respectively). To investigate and control factors associated with loss of muscle strength and poor quality of life, polypharmacy and DDIs could help institutions in the management of physical frailty.

Abstract
It remains controversial whether aging influences motor learning and whether physiological factors, such as local strength or fitness, are associated with fine motor performance and learning in older adults (OA). OA (n = 51) and young adults (YA, n = 31) performed a short-term motor learning session using a precision grip force modulation task. The rate of improvement of OA compared with YA was steeper with respect to performance variability and temporal precision. Both age groups showed positive transfer during an unpracticed variant of the force modulation task. Local muscle strength (pinch and grip strength) and high cardiovascular fitness positively predicted fine motor performance, whereas initial performance, muscle strength, and motor fitness (heterogeneous motor test battery) negatively predicted rate of improvement. Analyses indicated potentials, but also limits of plasticity for OA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence-Digital (QLF-D) system visualizes old and mature dental biofilm as red fluorescence. Risk factors for poor oral hygiene have been identified, however, few studies have evaluated the relationship between mature dental biofilm and hand motor functions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of two important manual motor functions for object manipulation -handgrip strength and manual dexterity- on the presence of red fluorescent dental biofilm in older community-dwelling Koreans using QLF-D, an optical device that reveals dental biofilm. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 70 Korean participants aged ≥65 years, all of whom completed questionnaires and were tested for handgrip strength and manual dexterity. In total, 840 dental surfaces were photographed using QLF-D, and ΔR20 values, which reflect mature dental biofilm accumulation, were calculated. The t-test was performed to analyze the differences in the ∆R20 values according to sociodemographic characteristics, health-related characteristics and hand motor functions, while multiple linear regression analysis was used to investigate the effects of hand motor functions on the ∆R20 values. RESULTS Multivariate regression analysis revealed that handgrip strength (β = -0.294) was the factor most strongly affecting mature dental biofilm accumulation (ΔR20), followed by tooth-brushing time (β = -0.262) and manual dexterity (β = -0.241). CONCLUSIONS Reductions in handgrip strength and manual dexterity were independent risk factors for pathogenic dental biofilm accumulation. The results of this investigation suggest that programs designed to prevent the decline, as well as improve, handgrip strength and manual dexterity might improve the oral hygiene of older adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Exercise-associated muscle cramping (EAMC) is a poorly understood problem that is neuromuscular in origin. Ingestion of transient receptor potential (TRP) channel agonists has been efficacious in attenuating electrically induced muscle cramps. This study examines the effect of TRP agonist ingestion on voluntarily induced EAMC and motor function. METHODS Study 1: Thirty-nine participants completed 2 trials after ingesting TRP agonist-containing active treatment (A), or vehicle (V) control. Cramping in the triceps surae muscle was induced via voluntary isometric contraction. Study 2: After ingesting A or V, 31 participants performed kinematic and psychomotor tests of manual dexterity. RESULTS A increased precramp contraction duration (A, 36.9 ± 4.1 s; V, 27.8 ± 3.1 s), decreased cramp EMG area under the curve (A, 37.3 ± 7.7 %EMGmax ·s; V, 77.2 ± 17.7 %EMGmax ·s), increased contraction force to produce the cramp (A, 13.8 ± 1.8 kg; V, 9.9 ± 1.6 kg), and decreased postcramp soreness (A, 4.1 ± 0.3 arbitrary units (a.u.); V, 4.7 ± 0.3 a.u.). Kinematic and psychomotor tests were not affected. DISCUSSION TRP agonist ingestion attenuated EAMC characteristics without affecting motor function. Muscle Nerve 56: 379-385, 2017.
