Abstract
We describe a Canadian infant of Jamaican descent who presented with mild anemia. Hb electrophoresis revealed Hb S and an unknown Hb variant that migrated slightly faster than Hb S on cellulose acetate. Molecular studies of the family indicated that the proband is a compound heterozygote for Hb S and Hb Caribbean. Hb Caribbean has previously been characterized as a mildly unstable hemoglobin with low oxygen affinity, due to a Leu-->Arg substitution at amino acid residue 91. The present study establishes the molecular basis for Hb Caribbean (beta 91, CTG-->CGG) and confirms that Hb S/Hb Caribbean syndrome is not associated with serious clinical manifestations.

Abstract
Sogn hemoglobinopathy was identified in a young American woman and in a young American man of apparently unrelated families of Norwegian ancestry. Both persons were asymptomatic and without clinical or hematologic manifestations. Hemoglobin Sogn, beta(A11)14 Leu----Arg, is an unstable hemoglobin that may easily be mistaken for hemoglobin S, G, or D by alkaline hemoglobin electrophoresis. These are the first known instances of hemoglobin Sogn outside of Norway. Oxygen affinity is normal. Sogn hemoglobinopathy is an incidental finding that has no adverse implication for the health of heterozygotes.

Abstract
A few rare hemoglobin variants with altered functional properties have been observed in Canadian subjects with either an erythrocytosis or mild anemia. These variants were Hb Alberta [beta 101(G3)Glu----Gly], Hb Linkoping [beta 36(C2)Pro----Thr], a new variant Hb Sunnybrook [beta 36(C2)Pro----Arg], and Hb Caribbean [beta 91(F7)Leu----Arg]. Short clinical descriptions of the subjects are given, the characterization of the variants is described in detail (except for Hb Alberta), while data from some functional analyses are provided. Comparisons with previously published data have been made and the unusual chromatographic property of two abnormal beta chains in a reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic system is reviewed.

Abstract
The gene frequencies of abnormal haemoglobins have been determined in a group of 100,000 Jamaican newborns screened over a period of 8 1/2 years. The population is predominantly of West African origin and the survey represents approximately one quarter of all island deliveries within the period of the study. The common beta globin chain abnormalities beta s and beta c occurred with gene frequencies of 0.055 and 0.019 respectively; beta thalassaemia was relatively rare. In contrast, alpha thalassaemia was quite common, occurring with a gene frequency of 0.183. In addition to these common abnormalities, the frequencies of 256 rare abnormal haemoglobins are described. This survey thus represents a complete and accurate documentation of the alpha and beta globin variants that occur in the Jamaican population.

Abstract
In an electrophoretic study of 15,661 Jamaican cord bloods, 8 rare beta-chain variants were found in 18 subjects in addition to the common beta-chain variants, Hb S and Hb C. The heterozygote frequencies for Hb S and Hb C were 10.1% and 3.7% respectively. The most frequent of the rare beta-chain variants were Hb Korle Bu (beta 73 Asp leads to Asn) (7 cases) and Hb O su-Christiansborg (beta 52 Asp leads to Asn) (3 cases). One new beta-chain variant, Hb Caribbean (beta 91 Leu leads to Arg) was found.
