Organochlorine insecticide residues in complete prepared meals: a 12-month survey in S.E. England

First report on pesticide sub-chronic and chronic toxicities against dogs using QSAR and chemical read-across

Excessive use of chemicals is the outcome of the industrialization of agricultural sectors which leads to disturbance of ecological balance. Various agrochemicals are widely used in agricultural fields, urban green areas, and to protect from various pest-associated diseases. Due to their long-term health and environmental hazards, chronic toxicity assessment is crucial. Since in vivo and in vitro toxicity assessments are costly, lengthy, and require a large number of animal experiments, in silico toxicity approaches are better alternatives to save time, cost, and animal experimentation. We have developed the first regression-based 2D-QSAR models using different sub-chronic and chronic toxicity data of pesticides against dogs employing 2D descriptors. From the statistical results (n train = 53 - 62 ,   r 2  = 0.614 to 0.754, Q L O O 2  = 0.501 to 0.703 and   Q F 1 2  = 0.531 to 0.718, Q F 2 2 = 0.523 - 0.713 ), it was concluded that the models are robust, reliable, interpretable, and predictive. Similarity-based read-across algorithm was also used to improve the predictivity (Q F 1 2 = 0.595 - 0.813 , Q F 2 2 = 0.573 - 0.809 ) of the models. 5132 chemicals obtained from the CPDat and 1694 pesticides obtained from the PPDB database were also screened using the developed models, and their predictivity and reliability were checked. Thus, these models will be helpful for eco-toxicological data-gap filling, toxicity prediction of untested pesticides, and development of novel, safer & eco-friendly pesticides.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as Potential Agents for Extraction and Delivery of Pesticides and Agrochemicals

Pesticide contamination is a global issue, affecting nearly 44% of the global farming population, and disproportionately affecting farmers and agricultural workers in developing countries. Despite this, global pesticide usage is on the rise, with the growing demand of global food production with increasing population. Different types of porous materials, such as carbon and zeolites, have been explored for the remediation of pesticides from the environment. However, there are some limitations with these materials, especially due to lack of functional groups and relatively modest surface areas. In this regard, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide us with a better alternative to conventionally used porous materials due to their versatile and highly porous structure. Recently, a number of MOFs have been studied for the extraction of pesticides from the environment as well as for targeted and controlled release of agrochemicals. Different types of pesticides and conditions have been investigated, and MOFs have proved their potential in agricultural applications. In this review, the latest studies on delivery and extraction of pesticides using MOFs are systematically reviewed, along with some recent studies on greener ways of pest control through the slow release of chemical compounds from MOF composites. Finally, we present our insights into the key issues concerning the development and translational applications of using MOFs for targeted delivery and pesticide control.

Using Watershed Boundaries to Map Adverse Health Outcomes: Examples From Nebraska, USA

In 2009, a paper was published suggesting that watersheds provide a geospatial platform for establishing linkages between aquatic contaminants, the health of the environment, and human health. This article is a follow-up to that original article. From an environmental perspective, watersheds segregate landscapes into geospatial units that may be relevant to human health outcomes. From an epidemiologic perspective, the watershed concept places anthropogenic health data into a geospatial framework that has environmental relevance. Research discussed in this article includes information gathered from the literature, as well as recent data collected and analyzed by this research group. It is our contention that the use of watersheds to stratify geospatial information may be both environmentally and epidemiologically valuable.

Evaluation of daily dietary intake of dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) and benzene hexachloride (BHC) in India

Duplicate samples of the diet of vegetarian adults were analyzed to estimate the residues of dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) and benzene hexachloride (BHC). The total food consumed by an adult per day was collected and categorized as fatty food, non-fatty food, water, and beverages. Fatty food was the main source of these chlorinated insecticides, and it contributed almost 50% of the total dietary intake. The average total DDT and BHC consumed by an adult were 19.24 micrograms/d and 77.15 micrograms/d, respectively. Blood DDT and BHC levels reflected intake (r = 0.685 for DDT; r = 0.515 for BHC).

Bioconcentration potential of organic environmental chemicals in humans

A list of environmental chemicals detectable in adipose tissue and/or milk of non-occupationally exposed humans is presented. Besides their physiochemical properties (n-octanol/water partition coefficient and water solubility), their acceptable daily intake (ADI) values, production figures, fate in the environment, concentrations in human adipose tissue, and data from total diet studies from market basket investigations are given. Average bioconcentration factors (BCF) of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), DDT, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dieldrin, hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (alpha-HCH, beta-HCH, gamma-HCH, delta-HCH), pentachlorophenol (PCP), and 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxytoluene (BHT) in human adipose tissue are calculated. The bioconcentration factors (wet wt basis) of these compounds are between 3 and 47 times higher in humans than in rats. The environmental chemicals are divided into three groups in respect to their bioconcentration factors in human adipose tissue: group I, high BCF (greater than 100); group II, medium BCF (10-100); and group III, low BCF (less than 10). The bioconcentration factors are useful for hazard assessment of chemicals to humans.

[Chlorinated hydrocarbons in the daily diet]

The gas chromatographic analysis of the daily diets (without beverages) of men consuming at maximum 4000 kcal per day, in spring, summer and autumn 1971, revealed always residues of chlorinated hydrocarbons. With an average food amount of 1635 g per day, each subject (having an average body weight of 65 kg) ingested 105 mug of DDT, 20 mug of DDE, 20 mug of DDD, and 149 mug of total DDT and 10 mug of lindane, respectively. The contamination was inferior to the ADI values recommended by the WHO/FAO. From winter 1971 to autumn 1972, the authors also analysed the daily diets (including beverages) of 1-3-year-old children (having an average body weight of 12 kg) in a week-nursery. The average food amount of 1230 g per day contained 42 mug of DDT, 12 mug of DDE, 8 mug of DDD, and 64 mug of total DDT and 7 mug of lindane, respectively. From these values a total DDT intake of 5.3 mug/kg of body weight was calculated which exceeds the ADI value for adults. The claim for a zero tolerance for victuals and ready-to-use baby foods is corroborated. Consequently the complete replacement of DDT by other insecticides is a measure which is imperative not only from the viewpoint of prophylaxis but also from that of health policy.
