Analysis of barbiturates by gas chromatography

This review surveys the evolution of gas chromatographic procedures for the quantification of barbiturates as either the free acids or their derivatives obtained by direct and on-column reactions. Among the aspects discussed, some emphasis is placed on recognized and other sources of interference encountered during analyses.

Simultaneous determination of methylated barbiturates and other anticonvulsant drugs by high-resolution gas chromatography

Several barbiturates and other anticonvulsant drugs can be analyzed simultaneously as dimethylated derivatives by high-resolution gas chromatography with a solid flash methylation injector. Quantitative determinations were performed on test serum during a quality control scheme. The sensitivity (+/- 0.1 mug/ml) and the accuracy are compatible with the measurement of therapeutic levels of barbiturates. The advantages of the method are discussed.

Gas chromatographic method for the microdetermination of barbiturates in blood using a nitrogen-selective flame ionization detector

A rapid, quantitative gas-liquid chromatographic method for the simultaneous determination of as little as 10 ng of unmodified barbital, pentobarbital, secobarbital, and hexobarbital from whole blood is described. The method involves one extraction from whole blood into chloroform with subsequent injection into a gas chromatograph equipped with a nitrogen-sensitive flame ionization detector. This method has the advantages of small sample size high specificity, sensitivity, and rapidity.
