Effectiveness of the white halo fungus, Cephalosporium lecanii, against field populations of coffee green bug, Coccus viridis

Cryptococcus depauperatus, a close relative of the human-pathogen C. neoformans, associated with coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) in Cameroon

The genus Cryptococcus is well known for its two species -Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gatii- that are etiological agents of cryptococcosis, an important fungal disease of mammals, including humans, and which is particularly common in immunocompromised patients. Nevertheless, Cryptococcus is a large and widely distributed genus of basidiomycetes occupying a broad range of niches, including mycoparasitism. One such mycoparasitic species is Cryptococcus depauperatus, which was firstly mistakenly described as a pathogen of scale insects under the name Aspergillus depauperatus. The "Aspergillus" conidiophores were later shown to be basidia of a Cryptococcus and the new combination C. depauperatus was proposed. Additionally, instead of an entomopathogen, the fungus was found to be a mycoparasite growing on the entomopathogen Akanthomyces (Lecanicillium) lecanii. Recently, during surveys for mycoparasites of coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) in the context of a biocontrol project, white colonies covering rust pustules were observed in Cameroon. Upon close examination, instead of a member of the "white colony forming complex" of Ascomycetes, commonly collected growing on H. vastatrix, such colonies were found to represent a basidiomycete fungus with basidia-bearing chains of basidiospores, typical of the genus Cryptococcus. Morphological and molecular evidence was generated supporting the identification of the fungus on rust pustules as C. depauperatus. This is the first record of C. depauperatus from Africa and of its association with coffee leaf rust.

Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana: Pathogenicity, Horizontal Transmission, and Their Effects on Reproductive Potential of Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

The polyphagous moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick) is among the major constraints to the horticultural industry in East Africa. In a search of sustainable control methods, the pathogenicity of the dry conidia of 17 Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschn.) and five Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) (Vuill.) isolates were tested against T. leucotreta moths. The conidial uptake by a single moth, horizontal transmission, and effect of fungal inoculant on egg-laying and hatchability for the pest were also assessed. The findings from this study showed that tested fungi were virulent to the moths, with 12 isolates causing mortality that ranged between 58.8 and 94.2% for M. anisopliae and three isolates between 57.6 and 84.6% for B. bassiana. The entomopathogenic fungi isolates, M. anisopliae ICIPE 69 and B. bassiana ICIPE 279 were highly virulent with low lethal times to 50% mortality (LT50) of 3.81 and 5.13 d, respectively. The isolate, ICIPE 69 conidia acquisition by a single moth were approximately 4.58 × 106 and 3.51 × 106 for males and females, respectively. The lowest survival rate (3.33 %) caused by inoculum transmission was recorded in donor males compared to 16.67% in recipient males. Fecundity was reduced by 33.6 and 25.9% for donor and recipient females, respectively. The pest can acquire conidia from the treated substrate and transmission is then possible between adults. ICIPE 69 is virulent and reduces the reproduction potential of the pest after transmission. The findings are discussed in the prospects of microbial control of this pest using an autodissemination technique.

Indirect effects of a fungal entomopathogen, Lecanicillium lecanii (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae), on a coffee agroecosystem ant community

Fungal entomopathogens are widely distributed across natural and managed systems, with numerous host species and likely a wide range of community impacts. While the potential for fungal pathogens to provide biological control has been explored in some detail, less is known about their community interactions. Here we investigate the effects of fungal epizootics of the entomopathogen Lecanicillium lecanii (Zimmerman) on a keystone mutualism between Azteca instabilis (F. Smith), a dominant arboreal ant, and the green coffee scale (Coccus viridis Green), as well as broader impacts on a coffee agroecosystem ant community. We hypothesized that seasonal epizootics cause shifts in the foraging ranges of A. instabilis as the ants adapt to the loss of the resource. We further hypothesized that the magnitude of these shifts depends on the availability of alternate resources located in neighboring shade trees. To test these hypotheses, we induced an epizootic in experimental sites, which were compared with control sites. Surveys of ant activity were undertaken pre- and post-epizootic. We found a decrease in foraging activity of A. instabilis and increase in activity of other ant species in the experimental sites post-epizootic. The decrease in abundance of A. instabilis foragers was greater on plants in which an epizootic was induced than in other plants. This relationship was modified by shade tree density where higher shade tree density was associated with larger decreases in A. intabilis foraging activity in coffee plants. These results demonstrate the potential for fungal entomopathogens to influence the structure and diversity of ecological communities.

Fungi as biological control agents of arthropods of agricultural and medical importance

There are many species of fungi attacking terrestrial and aquatic insects of agricultural and medical importance. Of these, few species have received much attention with a view to their use as biological control agents. The mechanisms of infection have been comparatively well studied, although many questions remain to be answered. The knowledge so far obtained has shed some light on the reasons for host specificity. Temperature, above all relative humidity, and their interactions are the most important physical factors influencing infection of terrestrial insects by entomopathogenic fungi and these are discussed in relation to epizootiological events. In aquatic environments, temperature, salinity and organic pollution are the important factors. In addition to these physical factors, numerous biotic factors at the level of the insect and the fungal pathogen influence both infection and spread of disease in insect populations. The complexity of the interactions of the biotic and abiotic factors makes it extremely difficult to study the influence of any one of these. Virulence of fungal pathogens and its measurement are discussed, together with the shortcomings of present bioassay systems; virtually no laboratory bioassay system exists which has been designed to yield data meaningful in the field. Mass-production techniques are described as are their inherent problems and those of formulation and storage. Finally, the achievements of fungal control of insects in the field are reviewed. Thus far, several species are mass-produced and are in widespread use, two of which,Verticillium lecaniiandHirsutella thompsonii, have been commercialized. More studies, ecological, fundamental and developmental are required in this field to realize fully the potential of other candidate fungi.
