Abstract
Background The Salience Hypothesis posits that aberrations in the assignment of salience culminate in hallucinations and unusual beliefs, the "positive symptoms" of schizophrenia. Evidence for this comes from studies on latent inhibition (LI), referring to the phenomenon that prior exposure to a stimulus impedes learning about the relationship between that stimulus and an outcome. Design This article reviewed all published studies examining the relationship between LI and both schizophrenia and schizotypy. Results Contemporary literature suggests that LI is attenuated in both people with schizophrenia and those loading highly on measures of schizotypy, the multidimensional derivative of schizophrenia. This suggests that these individuals assign greater salience to stimuli than healthy controls and people scoring low on measures of schizotypy, respectively. However, several confounds limit these conclusions. Studies on people with schizophrenia are limited by the confounding effects of psychotropic medications, idiosyncratic parsing of samples, variation in dependent variables, and lack of statistical power. Moreover, LI paradigms are limited by the confounding effects of learned irrelevance, conditioned inhibition, negative priming, and novel pop-out effects. Conclusions This review concludes with the recommendation that researchers develop novel paradigms that overcome these limitations to evaluate the predictions of the Salience Hypothesis.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to assess the context specificity of latent inhibition (LI) in the snail Cornu aspersum, using the appetitive Pavlovian Conditioning procedure of tentacle lowering. Snails experienced an odorous conditioned stimulus (CS) without any consequence before being conditioned with food. The conditioned stimulus preexposure occurred in the same context than the conditioning and the test context or in the different context. The study was performed in two replicas in which the photoperiod was defined by level of illumination and time of day (circadian replica) or was defined only by light (light replica). Both replicas showed that the CS preexposure in the same context as conditioning produced a delay in the acquisition of the conditioned response (CR). However, when the CS preexposure took place in a different context than the conditioning context, an equivalent level of CR as that observed in controls without preexposition to CS was shown. These results are congruent with context specificity of LI and they provide the first evidence of this phenomenon in terrestrial mollusks. Learning processes and theories involved in this phenomenon are also debated in the paper.

Abstract
Latent inhibition (LI) is a startlingly simple effect in which preexposure of a stimulus without consequence retards subsequent responding to a stimulus-consequence relation. The effect was first demonstrated with Pavlovian conditioning in animals and was later suggested to be a marker of human psychopathology such as schizophrenia. Individual differences in LI has supported the continued use of animal models to understand human mental health. In this review, we ask whether there is sufficient evidence to support the continued application of LI from animal models to human psychopathology because of the weak evidence for LI in humans. There is considerable variability in the methods used to assess LI, sustaining different theoretical accounts of the effects observed, which differ from the accepted accounts of LI as demonstrated in animals. The review shows that although there have been many experiments testing human LI, none provide the necessary experimental controls to support the conclusion that retarded responding is caused simply by preexposure to a stimulus, as has been demonstrated with animal models. Establishing this conflict, we set out a framework for future research.

Abstract
In two lick suppression experiments with rats, we assessed interference with behavior indicative of conditioned inhibition by a latent inhibition treatment as a function of test context. We asked what effect the test context has, given identical latent inhibition treatments in Phase 1 and identical conditioned inhibition trainings in Phase 2. In Experiment 1, an AAA versus AAB context-shift design determined that the latent inhibition treatment in Phase 1 attenuated behavior indicative of the conditioned inhibition training administered in Phase 2, regardless of the test context, which could reflect a failure to either acquire or express conditioned inhibition. In Experiment 2, an ABA versus ABB design showed that test performance in Contexts A and B reflected the treatments that had been administered in those contexts (i.e., conditioned inhibition was observed in Context B but not A), which could reflect either the context specificity of either latent inhibition or conditioned inhibition. In either case, latent inhibition of conditioned inhibition training in at least some situations was seen to reflect an expression deficit rather than an acquisition deficit. These data, in conjunction with prior reports, suggest that latent inhibition is relatively specific to the context in which it was administered, whereas conditioned inhibition is specific to its training context only when it is the second-learned relationship concerning the target cue. These experiments are part of a larger effort to delineate control by the test context of two-phase associative interference, as a function of the nature of target training and the nature of interference training.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It has been suggested that the positive symptoms of acute schizophrenia are a consequence of a disruption of the process that produces latent inhibition (slower acquisition of conditioned responding after preexposure to the conditioned stimulus) and that this effect can be modelled by pro- and antipsychotic compounds in healthy participants and in nonhuman animals. This idea assumes that latent inhibition in humans and animals is underpinned by the same process(es). METHOD First, we question the equivalence of human and animal latent inhibition. Second, we review the studies that have examined latent inhibition in populations with schizophrenia and in healthy populations after administration of amphetamine or haloperidol. RESULTS Theoretical analysis of the similarities and differences in latent inhibition effects, and the procedures used to generate them, in humans and animals renders the suggested equivalence between them unconvincing. The studies examining latent inhibition in populations with schizophrenia and in healthy populations after administration of amphetamine or haloperidol are marked by a number of methodological shortcomings and reveal discrepant results. CONCLUSIONS The theoretical and empirical analyses provide little support for a common process underlying deficits of latent inhibition in patients exhibiting positive symptoms of acute schizophrenia, and such deficits in experimental models in healthy humans and infrahumans.

Abstract
72 students solved two problems using a source problem designed to inhibit performance on the target problem relative to baseline performance when the target problem was solved alone. Both source and target problems shared surface similarity but were structurally dissimilar. Negative transfer was found for three different source and target combinations. The decreased performance below baseline for three of the source-target programs provides a reliable context to demonstrate negative transfer and facilitate continued investigation of this phenomenon.

Abstract
Latent inhibition (LI) is a robust phenomenon that is demonstrated when a previously inconsequential stimulus is less effective in a new learning situation than a novel stimulus. Despite LI's simplicity, there is considerable disagreement as to its theoretical basis. Attentional theories claim that unattended stimulus preexposures reduce stimulus associability. Alternatively, it has been asserted that associability is unaffected and that LI is a result of competition/retrieval processes. The present article reviews a series of visual search studies, some with normal subjects, both undifferentiated and divided into low and high schizotypals, and others with pathologies that entail dysfunctional attention, such as schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, and anxiety. The visual search conditions were designed to model those of traditional LI experiments, while tapping attentional processes independently of the learning scores that index LI. A variety of evidence from these and other studies is used to support the involvement of attentional and retrieval processes in LI. A model of the mechanism of action of these processes in LI is presented, together with its application to schizophrenia.

Abstract
In two pairs of three-stage conditioned taste aversion experiments, we examined the effects of delay interval (1 or 21 days) between the second and third stages, and of context in which the animals spent the delay (same as or different from the context of the other stages) on latent inhibition (LI) and spontaneous recovery following extinction. In the LI experiments (Experiments 1A and 1B), the first stage comprised nonreinforced presentations to saccharin or to water. In the second stage, rats were conditioned by saccharin paired with LiCl. In the extinction experiments (Experiments 2A and 2B), the order of the stages was reversed. For all experiments, Stage 3, the test stage, consisted of three presentations of saccharin alone. There was a super-LI effect in the saccharin-preexposed group that spent the 21-day delay in the different context (Experiment 1A). When the delay was spent in the same context, there was no difference in the amount of LI between the short- and long-delay groups (Experiment 1B). Conversely, there was a spontaneous recovery effect in the long-delay/same-context group (Experiment 2B), but not in the long-delay/different-context group (Experiment 2A). The pattern of results, incompatible with current explanations of delay-induced changes in memory performance, was interpreted in terms of an interaction between the delay conditions (same or different delay context), which modulate the extinction of previously acquired context-CS-nothing associations (during CS-alone presentations), and primacy effects.

Abstract
Latent inhibition (attenuated responding to a signal due to signal-alone presentations preceding the signal-outcome pairings) and blocking (attenuated responding to Signal B due to Signal A being paired with the outcome prior to pairings of an AB compound with the outcome) are reportedly absent in acute schizophrenics. The common assumption that these phenomena reflect the normal functioning of attention and the observation that rats administered low doses of amphetamine show a similar disruption has resulted in the development of an animal model of attentional dysfunction in acute schizophrenia. Here, we selectively review the experimental and clinical literature concerning latent inhibition and blocking, their disruption in acute schizophrenia, and the current status of this model. We conclude that the construct validity of the model is compromised if latent inhibition and blocking are viewed in attentional terms because experimental data indicate both phenomena can be better understood in associative terms. We favor a framework in which disruption of latent inhibition and blocking in acute schizophrenics is viewed as an inability to compare and express stored representations (i.e. associative performance deficit). This change of perspective does not undermine the potential value of the model, but rather suggests that the nature of its validity should be reconsidered.

Abstract
Latent inhibition (LI) is the phenomenon in which subjects who have repeatedly experienced an irrelevant stimulus perform more poorly on a new learning task with that stimulus than with a novel stimulus, presumably because of a decline in stimulus-specific attention. The present article reviews the literature on LI deficits in high-schizotypal normal subjects and schizophrenic patients. Although LI-deficits have been thought to be specific to these groups, evidence is presented that the effects may be related to the anxiety components of high-schizotypality and related pathologies.

Abstract
Learning that one cue (CS) predicts a second, salient cue (US) can often be slowed by prior exposure to one or both stimuli. In animals, CS-US learning is more strongly retarded following uncorrelated exposure to both CS and US than following exposure to the US alone. In this paper we present several studies showing a similar effect in humans, using a computer-based task. Experiments 1 and 2 used a between-groups design and demonstrated a strong CS/US exposure effect, whether or not the US was signalled by a neutral cue during exposure. Experiment 3 demonstrated similar effects using a within-subjects design. Overall, these results are consistent with several theoretical interpretations and suggest that uncorrelated CS/US exposure leads to a robust retardation of subsequent CS-US learning in humans.

Abstract
Damage to the hippocampus and medial temporal (MT) structures can lead to anterograde amnesia and may also impair latent learning, in which prior exposure to cues affects their subsequent associability. Normally, latent learning may reflect both representational and attentional mechanisms. Prior work has suggested that individuals with MT amnesia have specific deficits in representational processing; thus, latent learning that invokes primarily representational mechanisms might be especially impaired in MT amnesia. The current results provide preliminary confirmation of this prediction. In Experiment 1, a latent learning paradigm expected to invoke representational mechanisms was impaired in individuals with MT amnesia, whereas in Experiment 2, a paradigm expected to invoke other attentional mechanisms was spared in individuals with MT amnesia. This suggests the representational and attentional components of latent learning are dissociable and differentially affected in anterograde amnesia.

Abstract
The latent inhibition (LI) paradigm has been used to assess attentional dysfunction in various pathological groups. The rationale is based on the assumption that passive stimulus exposure results in the acquisition of an inattentional response to that stimulus. Consequently, compared to a novel stimulus in the same new learning situation, the preexposed stimulus is at a disadvantage. It is argued that methodological and conceptual problems in constructing procedures and designs have created obstacles in relating disrupted LI to psychopathology. Specifically, issues associated with within- and between-subject designs, dichotomous dependent variables, ceiling effects, converging operations, and possible mis-attribution of the LI effect are addressed. Designs and data from several new human-LI paradigms, with normal, de novo Parkinson, and schizophrenic subjects are examined. Results from a multi-condition, within-subject visual search procedure suggest that LI, heretofore attributed only to a deficit in the stimulus preexposed group, may, in part, be due to enhanced performance in the nonpreexposed group. Implications for the design and interpretation of LI experiments, particularly with pathologic groups are discussed.

Abstract
Latent inhibition, retarded learning after preexposure to the to-be-conditioned stimulus, has been implied as a tool for the investigation of attentional deficits in schizophrenia and related disorders. The present paper reviews research that used Pavlovian conditioning as indexed by autonomic responses (electrodermal, vasomotor, cardiac) to investigate latent inhibition in adult humans. Latent inhibition has been demonstrated repeatedly in healthy subjects in absence of a masking task that is required in other latent inhibition paradigms. Moreover, latent inhibition of Pavlovian conditioning is stimulus-specific and increases with an increased number of preexposure trials which mirrors results from research in animals. A reduction of latent inhibition has been shown in healthy subjects who score high on questionnaire measures of psychosis proneness and in unmedicated schizophrenic patients. The latter result was obtained in a within-subject paradigm that holds promise for research with patient samples.
