Water intake of Djungarian and Syrian hamsters treated with various dipsogenic stimuli

Dietary salt and voluntary ethanol consumption in golden hamsters

Adult male golden hamsters were maintained on powdered Purina chow and tap water, and were permitted continuous access to either a 15% or a 30% ethanol solution (v/v); after an initial 4-5 weeks of ethanol availability, hamsters had stabilized their intakes and were deriving an average of 1.25 and 1.96 g/day of absolute ethanol from the 15% and 30% solutions, respectively. When salt was added to the diet in increasing concentrations ranging from 4% to 10% over a period of 40 days, hamsters reduced chow-derived calories by up to 35%, increased tap water consumption by up to 50%, and increased consumption of ethanol solutions by up to 100%; when unadulterated Purina chow was reinstated, intakes of chow-derived calories, tap water, and ethanol solutions returned to baseline levels. Hamsters that were continuously maintained on unadulterated Purina chow, but with chow-derived calories matched to that of animals on the salt-adulterated diet, significantly increased their ethanol intake, but not their tap water intake; the increase in their ethanol intake was only about half as large as that of hamsters that had salt added to the diet, but the increase persisted even after ad lib feeding was reinstated. The results indicate that the addition of salt to the diet of hamsters produces large increases in ethanol consumption; furthermore, the increased ethanol intake is not simply the result either of a nonselective increase in fluid consumption or of the reduction in food intake that accompanies the addition of salt to the diet. Results are related to the possible role of the renin-angiotensin system in the control of ethanol consumption in the golden hamster.

Effects of exercise and anion on intake of sodium solutions in Syrian hamsters

Previous studies have shown that hamsters have low spontaneous intakes of NaCl solutions and are refractory to induction of salt appetite. In order to examine the generality of these results, the intakes of NaCl and NaHCO3 solutions are reported for hamsters housed either in normal laboratory conditions (sedentary) or with free access to exercise wheels. Spontaneous salt intakes, as well as those induced by acute sodium depletion and treatment with either the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, enalapril, or deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA), were measured. The intakes of NaCl and NaHCO3 were similar. Salt intakes tended to be lower in exercising than in sedentary groups. Neither acute sodium depletion nor administration of enalapril increased salt intake systematically, but treatment with DOCA increased intakes of both salt and water. These results are contrasted with the efficacy of all three treatments to induce salt appetite in rats.

Drinking behavior in the spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) following putative dipsogenic challenges

Male spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus) were challenged with several putative dipsogenic stimulus conditions: hypertonic sodium chloride (NaCl), 24-h water deprivation, d,l-isoproterenol HCl, angiotensin II (AII) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), or control conditions, in within-subjects designs. Water intake and drinking pattern were monitored electronically in the home cage over a 2--6-h test period without food present, during the light portion of the L/D cycle. In addition, hematocrits were measured following several treatments and mean arterial blood pressure was monitored in response to several doses of AII. As expected, both water deprivation and hypertonic NaCl led to robust drinking with short latencies. PEG was also an effective dipsogen; while quite variable, latencies were often shorter than are typically reported for the rat. Isoproterenol induced a modest, but significant, dose-related drinking. Interference by AII's prominent pressor action might account, at least in part, for its relative ineffectiveness as a dipsogen. Comparisons are made with other rodent species similarly challenged.

Sodium appetite: species and strain differences and role of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system

The characteristics of the appetite for NaCl in humans differ in some aspects from those in other species. The mechanisms of appetite for NaCl have been studied in detail in two species, rats and sheep. We review the treatments known to induce an appetite for NaCl in rats, with special reference to differences among strains in their spontaneous preference for NaCl solution. The current view of the mechanism is critically appraised, with particular emphasis on the role of angiotensin II, mineralocorticoids, cerebroventricular sodium transport, and the relation between preference for NaCl and the concentration of sodium in saliva. The appetite for NaCl in rodents other than rats is considered next, and reveals that mice, hamsters and gerbils are reluctant to ingest NaCl either spontaneously or after treatment with several of the natriorexigenic stimuli that are effective in rats. The characteristics of the appetite for NaCl in non-rodent species, including sheep, rabbit, dog, and non-human primates, are then described. We discuss some of the possible differences in mechanism that might account for this behavioral diversity among species.
