Variables associated with peripartum traits in dairy cows. III. Effect of diets and disorders on certain blood traits

Impact of dietary protein amount and rumen undegradability on intake, peripartum liver triglyceride, plasma metabolites, and milk production in transition dairy cattle

Feeding strategies of transition dairy cows contribute to the risk factors associated with metabolic disorders that limit production in the ensuing lactation. To investigate the effects of prepartum dietary crude protein (CP) concentration and amount of rumen-undegradable protein (RUP) on postpartum health and production, 44 multiparous Holstein cows were blocked by expected calving date and assigned to one of four isoenergetic prepartum rations beginning 28 d prior to expected calving date. Prepartum rations were: 12% CP and 26% RUP, 16% CP and 26% RUP, 16% CP and 33% RUP, or 16% CP and 40% RUP on a dry matter basis. All cows were fed the same postpartum diet (18% CP, 40% RUP) from 1 to 56 d in milk (DIM). Prepartum dry matter intake (DMI) was not different among dietary treatments. Mean postpartum intakes (kg/d) were higher through 56 DIM (P<0.05) for cows fed the 12% CP:26% RUP diet prepartum compared with any of the 16% CP diets (21.8 vs. 19.8, 18.6 and 18.6; 12% CP:26% RUP vs. 16% CP:26% RUP, 16% CP:33% RUP and 16% CP:40% RUP). There was a DIM x prepartum diet interaction (P<0.05) with the greatest effect of the 12% CP:26% RUP diet evident during the first 35 DIM. Cows fed the 12% CP:26% diet during the transition period tended to produce more milk (kg/d) (P = 0.08) than did cows fed any of the 16% CP diets (40.8 versus 37.8, 38.7, and 37.4; 12% CP:26% RUP vs. 16% CP:26% RUP, 16% CP:33% RUP, and 16% CP:40% RUP). Additional protein (12 vs. 16% CP) in the prepartum diet tended to decrease milk protein (P = 0.10) and milk fat yield (P = 0.08) but did not alter percent milk fat, percent milk protein, or MUN. Liver triglyceride (TG) expressed as milligrams of TG per microgram of DNA or percentage of dry matter (DM) on d -28, -14, +1, +28, and +56 relative to calving were not significantly different among treatments. Maximal (P<0.05) infiltration of TG in liver was observed on +1 d when expressed as a percentage of DM and on +28 d when expressed as milligrams of TG per microgram of DNA. Plasma glucose, calcium, urea nitrogen, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and nonesterified fatty acids were not different (P<0.05) among treatments. The data indicate carryover effects of prepartum dietary protein on postpartum intake and milk production, pointing to beneficial effects of maintaining dietary protein for dairy cows in late gestation at 12% CP.

Influence of prepartum calcium intake on calcium mobilization rate around parturition in dairy cows fed at a high prepartum feeding level

The influence of a low and a high prepartum calcium (Ca) intake on Ca mobilization rate around parturition was studied in 44 dairy cows fed a ration sufficient for 1.90 times maintenance requirements during the dry period. The plasma Ca level declined on the day of parturition in the group fed the low Ca intake (LCa: 26.4 g/d) as well as in the group fed the high Ca intake (HCa: 87.2 g/d). Plasma Ca levels of the HCa group were lower at parturition, and in this group 1 cow had milk fever after parturition. In the HCa group 6 cows had a plasma Ca level less than or equal to 2.0 mmol/l at parturition and/or 10 h post-partum (pp), versus 1 cow in the LCa group. Na2EDTA was intravenously infused at 10 h pp to induce hypocalcaemia to a level of plasma Ca not bound to EDTA of approximately 1.0 mmol/l. The LCa groups tended to require more Na2EDTA than the HCa groups, however the difference was significant only in the younger cows. After the Na2EDTA infusion 7 cows of the HCa group and 1 of the LCa group did not recover spontaneously and needed to be treated. The mean plasma PTH levels of the LCa group ante-partum were slightly higher than those of the HCa group. The Ca level of the prepartum ration did not influence urinary hydroxyproline excretion, which suggests that the Ca intake of 26.4 g/d was too high to stimulate bone turnover. Comparison of the present results with those of an earlier experiment in which the prepartum Ca intake at a low feeding level (1.12 times maintenance) was studied, led to the conclusion that higher prepartum feed intake has a clear negative influence on Ca homeostasis around parturition.

Arginine infusion stimulates prolactin, growth hormone, insulin, and subsequent lactation in pregnant dairy cows

L-Arginine or saline was administered intravenously by rapid infusion into 16 late-pregnant Holstein cows to study changes of prolactin, growth hormone, insulin, total protein, urea nitrogen, and subsequent lactation. Arginine was infused daily at .1 g/kg body weight starting about 7 days prior to predicted calving until calving. Blood was sampled via a jugular cannula at 0700, 0715, 0730 (infusion immediately followed 0730 h sample), 0745, 0815, 0845, 1100, 1300, 1500, 1700, and 1900 h. Arginine infusion evoked dramatic but transient increase of concentrations of blood serum prolactin, growth hormone, and insulin. Urea nitrogen also was elevated in blood serum but not total protein. The secretory response of prolactin, growth hormone, and insulin to daily arginine infusion during the entire prepartum period was not diminished. Milk production for the first 22 wk of lactation tended to be higher (by about 10%) for cows infused with arginine as compared to cows infused with saline. Therefore, repeated arginine infusion in late-pregnant cows dramatically increased prolactin, growth hormone, and insulin and tended to increase subsequent milk yield.

Influence of prepartum dietary crude protein on growth hormone, insulin, reproduction, and lactation of dairy cows

Effects of prepartum dietary crude protein on growth hormone, insulin in blood plasma, and subsequent reproduction and lactation were investigated in 30 Holsteins. Cows were fed either 80 or 100% of the crude protein recommended by National Research Council starting about 60 days precalving. Postcalving all animals were fed according to recommendations. Blood was sampled on days 220 (start of experiment), 250, 270, and 280 of gestation and on days 10 and 30 postpartum. Cows fed 80% crude protein prepartum showed decreased intake of dry matter and urea nitrogen in blood plasma prepartum, and yields of milk and total solids decreased by about 15%. Body weight changes through 30 days postpartum were not significantly different between treatments. There were no significant differences for growth hormone and insulin except growth hormone tended to be higher on day 270 of gestation for cows fed 80% crude protein. Insulin was negatively correlated with lactation number -5.1 to -5.6. Reproductive efficiency was similar between treatment groups. Lower crude protein intake during the dry period decreased dry matter intake and yields of milk and total solids.

Variables associated with peripartum traits in dairy cows. I. Effect of dietary forages and disorders on voluntary intake of feed, body weight and milk yield

Daily voluntary intakes of feed by each of 89 Holstein cows were compared between day 220 of gestation and day 30 postpartum over a 21-month period. Diets designed to meet NRC requirements and which contained either chopped hay (29 cows), hay crop silage (HCS; 30 cows) or corn silage (CS; 30 cows) were compared prepartum (27 to 0 days), peripartum (1 day before to 3 days after calving) and postpartum (days 4 to 30 postpartum). Mixed rations, fed during lactation, were 60% forage and 40% concentrate dry matter (DM). Cow management was similar to commercial operations. The experimental hypothesis was that pre-disposition for partum and postpartum disorders (abnormal) could be related either to voluntary intake of different diets or to physical traits. Intakes (DM or estimated net energy) across diets decreased 30% between days 7 and 1 prepartum and averaged 18% and 20% lower peripartum and postpartum, respectively, in abnormal cows than in control cows. Seasonal effects on intakes were significant. In general, changes in body weight and condition and differences in udder edema and milk yield reflected intakes. The results support the original hypothesis.

Variables associated with peripartum traits in dairy cows. II. Interrelationships among disorders and their effects on intake of feed and on reproductive efficiency

Daily individual voluntary intakes of dry matter (DM % of body weight) and estimated net energy (ENE, Mcal/100 kg) by 89 Holstein cows were compared between day 220 of gestation and day 30 postpartum over a 21-month period. The purpose was to compare effects of diet and health status (control vs. abnormal) on intakes of DM and ENE. The cows were fed either chopped hay, hay crop silage (HCS) or corn silage (CS). Compared to controls, voluntary intakes of DM and ENE were decreased (most to least) in cows with fat cow syndrome (FCS), parturient paresis (PP), mastitis (MST), retained fetal membranes-metritis (RFM-M), and displaced abomasum (DA) prepartum and FCS, DA, PP, RFM-M and MST peripartum. Cows fed hay had a lower incidence of RFM-M (28%) than cows fed HCS (57%) and CS (47%) as well as superior reproductive efficiency subsequently (89% conceived vs. 72% and 78%, respectively).
