Passive treatment of acid mine drainage with high metal concentrations using dispersed alkaline substrate

Passive treatment systems based on the dissolution of coarse calcite grains are widely used to remediate acid mine drainage (AMD). Unfortunately, they tolerate only low metal concentrations or acidity loads, because they are prone to passivation (loss of reactivity due to coating) and/or clogging (loss of permeability) by precipitates. To overcome these problems, a dispersed alkaline substrate (DAS) composed of a fine-grained alkaline reagent (calcite sand) mixed with a coarse inert matrix (wood chips) was developed. The small grains provide a large reactive surface and dissolve almost completely before the growing layer of precipitates passivates the substrate, whereas the dispersion of nuclei for precipitation on the inert surfaces retards clogging. Chemical and hydraulic performance of DAS was investigated in two laboratory columns fed at different flow rates with natural AMD of pH 2.3 to 3.5 and inflow net acidity 1350 to 2300 mg/L as CaCO(3). The DAS columns removed 900 to 1600 mg/L net acidity, 3 to 4.5 times more than conventional passive treatment systems. Regardless of the flow rate employed, Al, Fe(III), Cu, and Pb were virtually eliminated. Minor Zn, Ni, and Cd were removed at low flow rates. High acidity removal is possible because these metals accumulate intentionally in DAS, and their precipitation promotes further calcite dissolution. During 15 mo, DAS operated without clogging at 120 g acidity/m(2).d, four times the loading rate recommended for conventional passive systems; DAS may therefore be capable of treating AMD at sites where influent chemistry precludes the use of other passive systems.

Mercury concentration in fish from streams and rivers throughout the western United States

We collected and analyzed 2,707 large fish from 626 stream/river sites in 12 western U.S. states using a probability design to assess the regional distribution of whole fish mercury (Hg) concentrations. Large (>120 mm total length) fish Hg levels were strongly related to both fish length and trophic guild. All large fish that we sampled exceeded the wet weight detection limit of 0.0024 microgxg(-1), and the mean Hg concentration in piscivores (0.260 /microgxg(-1)) was nearly three times that of nonpiscivores (0.090 microgxg(-1)). Fish tissue Hg levels were not related to local site disturbance class. After partialing out the effects of fish length, correlations between Hg and environmental variables were low (r < 0.3) for the most common genera (trout and suckers). Stronger partial correlations with Hg (r > 0.5) were observed in other genera for pH, stream size, and human population density but patterns were not consistent across genera. Salmonids, the most common family, were observed in an estimated 125,000 km of stream length, exceeded 0.1 microg Hg x g(-1) (deemed protective for fish-eating mammals) in 11% of the assessed stream length, and exceeded the filet equivalent of 0.3 microg Hgxg (-1) (USEPA tissue-based water quality criterion) in 2.3% of that length. Piscivores were less widespread (31,400 km), but they exceeded the 0.1 and 0.3 microg Hgxg(-1) criteria in 93% and 57% of their assessed stream length, respectively. Our findings suggest that atmospheric transport is a key factor relative to Hg in fish across the western United States.

A review of acidity generation and consumption in acidic coal mine lakes and their watersheds

Lakes developing in former coal mine pits are often characterized by high concentrations of sulfate and iron and low pH. The review focuses on the causes for and fate of acidity in these lakes and their watersheds. Acidification is primarily caused by the generation of ferrous iron bearing and mineralized groundwater, transport through the groundwater-surface water interface, and subsequent iron oxidation and precipitation. Rates of acidity generation in mine tailings and dumps, and surface water are often similar (1 to >10 mol m(-2) yr(-1)). Weathering processes, however, often suffice to buffer groundwaters to only moderately acidic or neutral pH, depending on the suite of minerals present. In mine lakes, the acidity balance is further influenced by proton release from transformation of metastable iron hydroxysulfate minerals to goethite, and proton and ferrous iron sequestration by burial of iron sulfides and carbonates in sediments. These processes mostly cannot compensate acidity loading from the watershed, though. A master variable for almost all processes is the pH: rates of pyrite oxidation, ferrous iron oxidation, mineral dissolution, iron precipitation, iron hydroxide transformation, and iron and sulfate reduction are strongly pH dependent. While the principle mechanism of acidity generation and consumption and several controls are mostly understood, this cannot be said about the fate of acidity on larger spatial and temporal scales. Little is also known about critical loads and the internal regulation of biogeochemical iron, sulfur, and carbon cycling in acidic mine lakes.
