Gastrointestinal Nematode Control Programs with an Emphasis on Cattle

Control strategies for nematode parasites rely on knowledge of the relationships between the parasites and their hosts. Specifically, these programs are based on identifying crucial points of interaction in the environment provided by the host, including genetics and the immune response, and critical periods in the physical environment in which the eggs and larval stages must develop. When these targets are identified and the interactions understood, cost-effective sustainable programs can be developed using currently available antiparasitic compounds. Resistance to the major classes of anthelmintic compounds requires consideration of new approaches, such as immunity or genetics of the host. Additionally, the efficacy of these compounds can be expanded with combined or concomitant use. Increased study of the use of novel approaches, including fungi, elements such as copper, and plant products, has also occurred. This article explores each of these areas to allow readers to appreciate how various approaches may be developed and incorporated into an effective parasite control program.

The role of parasite epidemiology in the management of grazing cattle

Epidemiology of ruminant helminths is the foundation on which strategic parasite control programmes are designed. Without this information one is not able to use anthelmintics to provide the optimal benefits for controlling both the adult worm and the pasture larval populations. The absence of strategic programmes generally results in using anthelmintics at the convenience of the producer, which may have little if any impact on parasite populations. The design of a strategic parasite control programme requires a knowledge of the dynamics of egg shedding from the host and the resulting pasture larval populations. It is important to know if larvae are available when animals are turned out onto pasture, when larval populations reach their maximal numbers and when they are induced to become hypobiotic. The goal is to keep pasture larval populations as low as possible. The use of pasture rotation adds another dimension to control programmes. The longer a pasture is allowed to remain fallow, the lower the pasture larval burden will be when it is grazed next. However, when we use intensive rotational grazing, animals may return to the pasture about 28 days later, when the larvae resulting from the eggs shed in the previous grazing are infective. This practice forces cattle to eat all of the forage available, including the grass closest to the faecal pat, where most of the infective larvae are available. If we treated cattle before turning them onto a clean rotationally grazed pasture, we should be able to control parasitism. Using a long-acting anthelmintic should enhance helminth control in rotationally grazed pastures and actually help to clean the pastures. Another grazing management practice is to alternately graze different species. This programme with the strategic use of anthelmintics should reduce parasitism in both host species.

Efficacy of morantel sustained release trilaminate bolus against gastrointestinal nematodes in grazing dairy calves in Kenya

The efficacy of morantel sustained release trilaminate (MSRT) bolus against gastrointestinal nematodes was evaluated under field conditions over a 10-month period. Twenty weaner calves were randomly divided into 2 groups of 10 calves each and grazed from March to December on adjacent, similarly contaminated paddocks. Group 1 calves (T-1) served as untreated controls while group 2 calves (T-2) were dosed at turnout with MSRT bolus designed to release morantel tartrate continuously for 90 days. The efficacy of MSRT was assessed by comparison of parasitological data (faecal worm egg counts, herbage larval counts, worm counts from tracer calves and set-stocked trial calves, determination of haematological parameters and pepsinogen levels), weight gains and clinical status of the animals. Faecal egg counts from the treated group (T-2) were reduced by 100% (P < 0.001) following treatment and remained significantly (P < 0.05) lower than counts from T-1 calves up to trial termination. The use of MSRT bolus resulted in a reduction of 92% (P < 0.001) in the number of gastrointestinal nematodes in set-stocked calves at the end of the study and a 55 to 85.7% reduction in herbage larval infectivity as reflected in lowered parasite burdens in tracer calves. At the trial termination, the control calves had gained on average (+/- s.d.) 59.4 +/- 4.8 kg (200.0 +/- 7.4 g day-1) and the treated ones on an average 128.6 +/- 10.5 kg (530.0 +/- 13.1 g day-1).

Efficacy of the morantel sustained release trilaminate matrix against gastrointestinal nematodes in beef calves

The effectiveness of the morantel sustained release trilaminate (MSRT) in controlling gastrointestinal nematodes through a grazing season was evaluated using 60 yearling beef stocker calves randomly divided into 2 groups of 30 animals each. In April 1985, the calves comprising the treatment group each received an MSRT designed to release morantel tartrate continuously for 90 days while those of the control group remained unmedicated. All animals were weighed and samples of rectal feces were taken at 14-day intervals, beginning on Day 0, until trial termination (Day 168). At trial termination, 10 control and 10 treated calves were necropsied for recovery of gastrointestinal nematodes. Three sets of parasite-naïve tracer calves were utilized to evaluate the initial, interim and final levels of pasture contamination by nematode larvae. Overall, the use of the MSRT resulted in a 75.5% reduction (P less than 0.001) in output of nematode eggs from the principals, an 81.8% reduction (P less than 0.001) in numbers of gastrointestinal nematodes in principals (at trial termination), and a 96.9% reduction (P less than 0.05) of pasture larval nematode contamination (as indirectly indicated by parasite burdens in tracer calves). The mean weight advantage of treated calves was 16.6 kg per head (P less than 0.001).

Epidemiology of Ostertagia ostertagi in warm temperate regions of the United States

For many years our general knowledge on the epidemiology of Ostertagia ostertagi in the U.S.A. was based on research conducted in Scotland and England. During the last 10 years, epidemiologic investigations on O. ostertagi and other gastrointestinal nematodes of cattle have been conducted in various sections of the U.S.A. and Canada. Definite seasonal patterns of O. ostertagi larval inhibition have been demonstrated, but occurrences of the Type I and Type II clinical entities have not been adequately described and associated with the epidemiology of the parasite. All information to the present time suggests that there are seasonal differences in ostertagiasis based on a north and south plane, with larval inhibition occurring during autumn in the north and during spring in the south and parts of the west. Under environmental and management conditions of the south and those other regions where O. ostertagi is significantly and summer is the dominant season, some minimal numbers of inhibition-prone O. ostertagi may be acquired during autumn and winter. However, the early pre-Type II phase (acquisition of inhibition-prone larvae) begins in late winter and reaches peak levels during spring. From January to April, young cattle between weaning and 16 months of age may be affected by Type I disease. Pasture transmission basically ceases from late spring into autumn with consistent high temperature and alternating wet and dry periods. From late summer through autumn (occasionally earlier), Type II disease is possible primarily in yearling cattle and also in older cattle. September and October are months of greatest prevalence. The probability of Type II disease effects occurring, i.e. effects ranging from mild clinical signs and minimal production loss to acute disease and deaths, is dictated by numbers of worms present and characteristics of maturation of inhibited larvae, which in turn may be influenced by current weather factors and management conditions, as well as those of the previous winter and spring.
