Polymeric composite membranes in carbon dioxide capture process: a review

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) emission to the atmosphere is the prime cause of certain environmental issues like global warming and climate change, in the present day scenario. Capturing CO₂ from various stationary industrial emission sources is one of the initial steps to control the aforementioned problems. For this concern, a variety of resources, such as liquid absorbents, solid adsorbents, and membranes, have been utilized for CO₂ capturing from various emission sources. Focused on membrane-based CO₂ capture, polymeric membranes with composite structure (polymeric composite membrane) offer a better performance in CO₂ capturing process than other membranes, due to the composite structure it offers higher gas flux and less material usage, thus facile to use high performed expensive material for membrane fabrication and achieved good efficacy in CO₂ capture. This compressive review delivers the utilization of different polymeric composite membranes in CO₂ capturing applications. Further, the types of polymeric materials used and the different physicochemical modifications of those membrane materials and their CO₂ capturing ability are briefly discussed in the text. In conclusion, the current status and possible perspective ways to improve the CO₂ capture process in industrial CO₂ gas separation applications are described in this review.

An integrated microfluidic flow-focusing platform for on-chip fabrication and filtration of cell-laden microgels

We present the development of a stable continuous, and integrated microfluidic platform for the high-throughput fabrication of monodisperse cell-laden microgel droplets with high and maintained cellular viability. This is through combining onto one chip all the required processes from the droplet generation in a flow focusing microfluidic junction passing through on-chip photocrosslinking to the separation of the droplets from the continuous oil phase. To avoid cellular aggregation during the droplet generation process, cells were treated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) before mixing with gelatin methacrylate (GelMA). And, a magnetic mixer was applied to the GelMA prepolymer-cell suspension syringe to eliminate cell sedimentation. These approaches resulted in having a reasonable distribution of cells among monodisperse microdroplets. The microdroplets were irradiated with a 405 nm wavelength laser beam while passing through the crosslinking chamber of the microfluidic device. The produced microgels enter the filtration unit of the same device where they were gently separated from the oil phase into the washing buffer aqueous solution of Tween 80 using the filter microposts array. The viability of the encapsulated cells was around 85% at day 1 and was maintained throughout 5 days. Using this method of controlling cell encapsulation with on-chip crosslinking and oil filtration, highly efficient cell-laden microgel production is achieved. The presented integrated microfluidic platform can be a candidate for standard cell-encapsulation experiments and other tissue engineering applications.

Fluorine in the structure of polymers: influence on the gas separation properties

Results of studies on the separation of gases and vapours using fluorine-containing polymers are integrated and analyzed. Methods for the synthesis of these polymers are considered, including direct gas-phase fluorination, plasma polymerization of fluorine-containing precursors and modification of organic polymers, as well as diverse syntheses of monomers containing C−F and C−CF3 bonds and their subsequent polymerization. Structure – property relationships for these polymers are elucidated and their actual and potential applications as membrane materials are discussed.

Fabricating large arrays of microwells with arbitrary dimensions and filling them using discontinuous dewetting

This paper describes the fabrication of large (up to 45 cm(2)) arrays of microwells, with volumes as small as ∼3 fL/well and densities as high as 10(7) wells/cm(2). These arrays of microwells are formed by casting an elastomer, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), against "masters" prepared by photolithography; arrays of microwells in other polymers can be formed by using a master consisting of posts in PDMS. A straightforward technique, discontinuous dewetting, allows wells to be filled rapidly (typically on the order of 10(4) wells/s) and uniformly with a wide range of liquids. Several rudimentary strategies for addressing microwells are investigated, including electroosmotic pumping and gaseous diffusion.

Benzophenone absorption and diffusion in poly(dimethylsiloxane) and its role in graft photo-polymerization for surface modification

Following the great success of traditional microfluidic devices across many disciplines, a new class of microfluidic systems emerged in recent years, which features finely tuned, localized surface modifications within the microstructures in order to keep up with the demand for devices of ever increasing complexity (lab on chip, assay on chip, etc.). Graft photopolymerization has become a powerful tool for such localized surface modifications particularly in combination with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) devices, as it is compatible with many functional monomers and allows for high spatial resolution. However, application within enclosed PDMS microstructures and in particular well-controlled surface-directed polymerization remains challenging. Detailed understanding of the interaction between photoinitiator, benzophenone (BP), and polymer matrix is needed. We have developed a visualization technique, which allows for observation of reacted BP in situ within the PDMS matrix. We present a detailed study on solvent-driven BP diffusion providing results essential to successful surface treatment. We also identified and investigated photoinitiator inhibition by oxygen and provide appropriate mitigation strategies.
