Abstract
Sodium metavanadate (NaVO3 ) is a pentavalent vanadium compound used in the metal industry and dietary supplements; human exposure occurs through inhalation of fumes and dust and ingestion of NaVO3 -containing products. The objective of this study was to assess the potential immunotoxicity of NaVO3 . Female B6C3F1/N mice were exposed to 0-500 ppm NaVO3 in drinking water for 28 days and evaluated for effects on immune cell populations and innate, cellular-mediated, and humoral-mediated immunity. There was a decreasing trend in body weight (BW) and BW gain in NaVO3 exposed mice, with a decrease (p ≤ 0.05) in BW gain at ≥250 ppm, relative to control. Conversely, increasing trends in spleen weights and an increase (p ≤ 0.05) in the spleen:BW ratio at ≥250 ppm NaVO3 were observed. NaVO3 exposure altered antibody production against sheep red blood cells (SRBC). Antibody forming cells (AFC)/106 spleen cells exhibited a decreasing trend, with a decrease (p ≤ 0.05) at 500 ppm NaVO3 , concurrent with an increase in percent B cells. NaVO3 had no effect on the serum anti-SRBC IgM antibody titers or anti-keyhole limpet hemocyanin antibody production. Exposure to NaVO3 decreased the percentage of natural killer cells at all dose levels (p ≤ 0.05), with no effect on the lytic activity. NaVO3 altered T-cell populations at 500 ppm but had no effect on T-cell proliferative responses or the lytic activity of cytotoxic T cells. Collectively, these data indicate that NaVO3 exposure can adversely affect the immune system by inducing alterations in humoral-mediated immunity, specifically the AFC response, with no effect on cell-mediated or innate immunity.

Abstract
The use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy (RS) for the analysis of lymphocytes in clinical applications is increasing in the field of biomedicine. The pre-analytical phase, which is the most vulnerable stage of the testing process, is where most errors and sample variance occur; however, it is unclear how pre-analytical variables affect the FTIR and Raman spectra of lymphocytes. In this study, we evaluated how pre-analytical procedures undertaken before spectroscopic analysis influence the spectral integrity of lymphocytes purified from the peripheral blood of male volunteers (n = 3). Pre-analytical variables investigated were associated with (i) sample preparation, (blood collection systems, anticoagulant, needle gauges), (ii) sample storage (fresh or frozen), and (iii) sample processing (inter-operator variability, time to lymphocyte isolation). Although many of these procedural pre-analytical variables did not alter the spectral signature of the lymphocytes, evidence of spectral effects due to the freeze-thaw cycle, in vitro culture inter-operator variability and the time to lymphocyte isolation was observed. Although FTIR and RS possess clinical potential, their translation into a clinical environment is impeded by a lack of standardisation and harmonisation of protocols related to the preparation, storage, and processing of samples, which hinders uniform, accurate, and reproducible analysis. Therefore, further development of protocols is required to successfully integrate these techniques into current clinical workflows.

Abstract
Efficient functionality of the immune system is needed to fight against the development of infectious diseases, including, among others, serious recurrent chronic infections. Research has shown that many modern common diseases, such as inflammatory bowel diseases and cardiovascular diseases, e.g., thromboembolism, cancer, obesity, or depression, are connected with inflammatory processes. Therefore, new, good stimulators of the immune system's response are sought. They include synthetic compounds as well as biological preparations such as lipopolysaccharides, enzymes, bacterial metabolites, and secondary metabolites of plants, demonstrating a multidirectional effect. Essential oils are characterized by many invaluable activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulating. Essential oils may stimulate the immune system via the utilization of their constituents, such as antibodies, cytokines, and dendritic cells. Some essential oils may stimulate the proliferation of immune-competent cells, including polymorphonuclear leukocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, natural killer cells, and B and T lymphocytes. This review is focused on the ability of essential oils to affect the immune system. It is also possible that essential oil components positively interact with recommended anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial drugs. Thus, there is a need to explore possible synergies between essential oils and their active ingredients for medical use.

Abstract
Introduction Chronic low-grade inflammation (LGI) plays a role in the pathogenesis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). LGI, on the one hand, promotes insulin resistance and at the same time, affects fetal development. The study aimed to use clinically feasible means to evaluate the association between maternal LGI and maternal insulin resistance and fetal growth indices by ultrasound in the third trimester. Methods A crossectional and descriptive study on 248 first-time diagnosed GDM in Vietnam. Results Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR) indices were significantly higher in GDM than in normal glucose-tolerant pregnancies (p = 0.048 and 0.016, respectively). GDM with LGI witnessed significantly higher systolic blood pressure, BMI, HbA1c, and significantly lower quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index (QUICKI) than those without LGI. After adjusting for maternal BMI, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), age, and parity, C-reactive protein (CRP) was positively correlated with HOMA2-IR (B=0.13, p<0.01) and Mathews index (B=0.29, p<0.01). Regarding fetal characteristics, LGI was associated with fetal growth indices in the third trimester of GDM. NLR was negatively correlated with estimated fetal weight (EFW) (B=-64.4, p<0.05) after adjusting for maternal BMI and FPG. After adjusting for maternal BMI, FPG, age, and parity, PLR was negatively correlated with biparietal diameter (B=-0.02, p<0.01) and abdominal circumference (AC) (B=-0.16, p<0.05), and EFW (B=-1.1, p<0.01), and head circumference (HC) (B=-0.06, p<0.01); CRP was negatively correlated with AC (B=-0.16, p<0.001), EFW (B=-85.3, p<0.001), and HC (B=-5.0, p<0.001). Conclusion In the third trimester, LGI was associated with maternal glucose and insulin resistance in GDM. Moreover, LGI was associated with fetal characteristics in ultrasonic images. There were negative correlations between LGI and fetal developmental characteristics.

Abstract
The current study purposed to investigate the 3-indoleacetic acid (IAA) possible adverse impacts on hematological parameters, hepatorenal function, cardiac, and skeletal muscles as well as testes of rats and histopathological alterations of respective organs and to determine the extent of reversing any adverse impacts occurred in animals after IAA withdrawal. Rats were exposed orally to 500 mg/kg BW by gastric intubation once daily for 14 days, after which one-half was sacrificed and the remaining half left for a further 14 days without IAA exposure. The exposure of rats to IAA produced anemia, leukopenia, neutrophilia, lymphopenia, and a significant increase in activities of serum transaminase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, creatine kinase-myocardial band, creatine kinase-muscle type, and levels of serum creatinine, sodium, chloride, and potassium. Furthermore, serum levels of testosterone, gonadotropins, and leptin significantly declined. The changes in most of measured parameters continued after IAA withdrawal. Histopathological alterations in different tissues supported these changes. In conclusion, subacute exposure to IAA at a high concentration could exert hematotoxicity and toxic effects on many soft organs and its withdrawal led to incomplete recovery of animals. Thus, IAA should be used cautiously as extensive use of it at high concentrations can cause harmful effects on the environment, animals and human beings.

Abstract
Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the leading causes of death globally, with a mortality rate of over 20%. However, the diagnostic biomarkers frequently used in current clinical practice have limitations in both sensitivity and specificity, likely resulting in delayed diagnosis. This study aimed to identify potential diagnostic biomarkers for AMI and explored the possible mechanisms involved. Datasets were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus. First, we identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and preserved modules, from which we identified candidate genes by LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) regression and the SVM-RFE (support vector machine-recursive feature elimination) algorithm. Subsequently, we used ROC (receiver operating characteristic) analysis to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the candidate genes. Thereafter, functional enrichment analysis and an analysis of immune infiltration were implemented. Finally, we assessed the association between biomarkers and biological processes, infiltrated cells, clinical traits, tissues and time points. We identified nine preserved modules containing 1,016 DEGs and managed to construct a diagnostic model with high accuracy (GSE48060: AUC = 0.923; GSE66360: AUC = 0.973) incorporating two genes named S100A9 and SOCS3. Functional analysis revealed the pivotal role of inflammation; immune infiltration analysis indicated that eight cell types (monocytes, epithelial cells, neutrophils, CD8+ T cells, Th2 cells, NK cells, NKT cells and platelets) were likely involved in AMI. Furthermore, we observed that S100A9 and SOCS3 were correlated with inflammation, variably infiltrated cells, clinical traits of patients, sampling tissues and sampling time points. In conclusion, we suggested S100A9 and SOCS3 as diagnostic biomarkers of AMI and discovered their association with inflammation, infiltrated immune cells and other factors.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the possible ameliorative role of Thymus vulgaris (T. vulgaris) essential oil against Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) deleterious effects in both blood and different tissues of rats by assessing the hematological, biochemical and immune-inflammatory parameters besides the histopathological alterations in the different organs. Forty male rats were randomly divided into four equal groups as follows: group I served as control, group II orally inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 at a dose of 1.0 × 109 cfu/ml, group III orally received 250 mg/kg BW T. vulgaris oil daily for 7 days and group IV orally inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 as the same dose of group II and orally received T. vulgaris oil as the same dose and duration of group III. Bacterial challenge in groups II and IV was once at the beginning of experiment and administration of oil began after 72 h from bacterial inoculation. At the end of the study, blood was sampled and complete blood picture, liver and kidney function alongside immunoglobulins and cytokines concentrations were estimated and tissues of large intestine (colon), liver and kidneys were collected for histopathological examinations. The results revealed that there was an increase of red blood cells count, hematocrit value and hemoglobin concentration besides white blood cells and thrombocytes counts and substantial increment of serum markers of hepatorenal damage such as the activities of transaminases and concentrations of bilirubin (total, direct and indirect), total proteins, albumin, creatinine and urea in E. coli O157:H7-challenged group. Also, there was a considerable increase in serum immunoglobulins M and G, interleukin 6 and 8 and tumor necrosis factor alpha as well as decreased serum alkaline phosphatase activity. Moreover, T. vulgaris oil could partially improve the hematological, biochemical and histopathological alterations induced by E. coli O157:H7 without any significant alterations in all measured parameters when used alone. The study concluded that the T. vulgaris oil relatively diminished the alterations in hematological parameters, hepatic and renal function markers and immune-inflammatory variables alongside the histopathological changes in different organs induced by E. coli O157:H7. The ameliorative effects of T. vulgaris oil are mediated through its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities.

Abstract
Ruminants, as well as other livestock, can synthesize vitamin C (VC) in their liver, and therefore, dietary requirements from exogenous supplementation are often ignored. However, metabolic demand may be exceeded, leading to a decreased endogenous synthetic capacity of VC following exposure to stressful conditions. Such conditions include high thermal load, limited water intake (induced by water scarcity), physiological status and infectious diseases. The obvious consequences are decreased performance, susceptibility to infections and increased mortality. This review discusses the potential role of vitamin C in ruminants' stress management and summarizes the in vitro and in vivo research to date. The different administration routes, comparative advantages and supplementation outcomes on growth, production parameters and physiological status were also identified. Also, areas where there was a lack of evidence or controversy, including critical literature research gaps, were identified, while the mechanism of VC's actions on significant outcomes was explained.

Preclinical tolerance evaluation of the addition of a cisplatin-based dry powder for inhalation to the conventional carboplatin-paclitaxel doublet for treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. Abstract
Despite the advances in targeted therapies and immunotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, the intravenous administration of carboplatin (CARB) and paclitaxel (PTX) in well-spaced cycles is widely indicated for the treatment of NSCLC from stage II to stage IV. Our strategy was to add a controlled-release cisplatin-based dry-powder for inhalation (CIS-DPI-ET) to the conventional CARB-PTX-IV doublet, administered during the treatment off-cycles to intensify the therapeutic response while avoiding the impairment of pulmonary, renal and haematological tolerance of these combinations. The co-administration of CIS-DPI-ET (0.5 mg/kg) and CARB-PTX-IV (17-10 mg/kg) the same day showed a higher proportion of neutrophils in BALF (35 ± 7% vs 1.3 ± 0.8%), with earlier regenerative anaemia than with CARB-PTX-IV alone. A first strategy of CARB-PTX-IV dose reduction by 25% also induced neutrophil recruitment, but in a lower proportion than with the first combination (20 ± 6% vs 0.3 ± 0.3%) and avoiding regenerative anaemia. A second strategy of delaying CIS-DPI-ET and CARB-PTX-IV administrations by 24 h avoided both the recruitment of neutrophils in BALF and regenerative anaemia. Moreover, all these groups showed higher cytotoxicity (LDH activity, protein content) with no higher renal toxicities. These two strategies seem interesting to be assessed in terms of antitumor efficacy in mice.
