Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The accumulation of health knowledge may motivate the development of long-term healthy behavior in secondary school ages. The present investigation aimed to assess the health interests and knowledge of secondary school pupils following different types of diets. METHODS The From Science 2 School study was developed with a cross-sectional design. Pupils of secondary school levels I and II were invited to complete an online survey with questions on the individual, physical activity, nutrition, and health. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and chi-squared tests were used in the statistical analysis. RESULTS A basic sample of 8845 participants completed the survey. Following data clearance, 8799 pupils (aged 15.1 years; 63.1 % girls, 36.9 % boys) were eligible for the final analysis. Pupils followed a mixed diet (n = 8164; 92.8 %) vegetarian diet (n = 493; 5.6 %), or vegan diet (n = 142; 1.6 %). Girls were more likely to consume a vegetarian (n = 429; 87 %) or vegan diet (n = 108; 76 %; p < 0.01). The vegetarian and vegan subgroups were more frequently interested in health and nutrition (p < 0.01) but similar for interest in physical activity and sports (p > 0.05). A higher prevalence of overweight and obesity was found among the mixed diet subgroup (n = 987; 12.1 %; p < 0.01). CONCLUSION This is the first study to assess health interests and knowledge in school pupils following vegetarian and vegan diets. The results indicate that following a vegetarian or vegan type of diet during childhood and adolescence is associated with a higher level of health knowledge and nutritional understanding.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: This paper aims to assess the unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary behaviours among adolescents and young adults simultaneously. Methods: The sample consists of 682 participants aged 10-24 years old (58.9% males and 68.2% aged 15-19 years old), recruited for the ALIMA (ALImentazione Multiculturale negli Adolescenti) study in both secondary schools and youth aggregation centres, located in Rome. The study utilizes structured questionnaires to gather data on anthropometric measurements, eating habits, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and sedentary behaviours. Data are analyzed by using the Pearson chi-squared test. Results: Excessive screen time (>3 h/day) and inadequate dietary habits (insufficient consumption of fruit, vegetables, and legumes, skipping breakfast, and a high consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and alcohol) are observed in the total sample, but mainly in older adolescents aged 15-19 years old. The adherence to the MD, measured via the KIDMED index, is significantly different among the three age groups (p = 0.001); 47.8% of the sample has a medium adherence, while among those with a low adherence, the highest percentage is represented by older adolescents (39.8%); those with foreign-born parents have healthier diets, whereas lower parental education correlates with unhealthy behaviours. Conclusions: These results highlight the need for targeted interventions tailored to adolescents and young adults to encourage healthier lifestyle choices.

Abstract
Diet and nutrition are critical factors influencing cancer, the second leading cause of death worldwide. This study evaluated dietary risk factors and cancer mortality. 49,773 participants aged 40-75 years from the Golestan Cohort Study (GCS) were followed for a median of 15 years. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Cox proportional hazard models estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), while population attributable fractions (PAFs) quantified the impact of reducing dietary risk factors. Low fruit intake accounted for 4.7% (95% CI: 0.5-8.7%) of all cancer deaths and 4.91% (95% CI: 0-9.85%) of male cancer deaths. It contributed to 23.5% (95% CI: 4.7-38.59%) of pancreatic cancer mortality in both sexes and 29.36% (95% CI: 5.15-47.38%) of male pancreatic cancer deaths. Low omega-3 intake increased esophageal and gastric cancer mortality risks, with PAFs of 21.65% (95% CI: 1.14-37.9%) and 21.46% (95% CI: 2.81-36.53%), respectively. In females, low omega-3 intake accounted for 38.68% (95% CI: 4.05-60.81%) of gastric cancer deaths. Low fruit and omega-3 consumption elevated cancer mortality risk. Community- and individual-level interventions are essential to enhance nutrient intake and reduce cancer mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to explore the association of fruit, vegetable, and pulses consumption with all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality. STUDY DESIGN This prospective study included 66,933 individuals from three Spanish health surveys linked to the national death registry up to December 2022. METHODS Adjusted Poisson regression models were used to analyze the data, categorizing fruit, vegetable and pulses intake according to Spanish dietary recommendations and using splines to examine non-linear relationships. RESULTS No clear association was found between pulses intake and mortality. Consuming fruits and vegetables ≥2 times/day reduced all-cause mortality risk by 20 % (95%CI = 10%-29 %) and 17 % (95%CI = 7%-26 %) respectively, compared with <3 times/week. Combined intake of fruits and vegetables from 1 to 1.99 to ≥5 times/day showed reductions in all-cause and CVD mortality ranging from 16 % (95%CI = 5%-26 %) to 30 % (95%CI = 20%-39 %), and from 25 % (95%CI = 5%-41 %) to 35 % (95%CI = 14%-50 %), respectively, compared with <1 time/day. No additional benefits against all-cause and CVD mortality for intakes of fruits over 2-3 times/day, but gradual reductions in mortality risk for vegetable intake of 2-5 times/day were observed. Combined intake showed protection up to intakes of 10 times/day, notably for CVD mortality. Associations were similar but weaker for cancer mortality. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that significant benefits of fruits and, specially, vegetables intake might go beyond the recommended five servings a day. Confirmation of these results could lead to specific dietary recommendations to prevent chronic diseases.

Abstract
Objectives: Using data from the Food Insecurity among European University Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic (FINESCOP) project, this study aims to investigate the dietary intakes among university students in Iceland, focusing specifically on their current diet after March 2020. Additionally, it examines correlations among different food groups to reveal associations in dietary patterns. Methods: The investigation uses data from the observational FINESCOP project in Iceland. Spearman's correlation coefficients were used to identify associations between different dietary intakes. p values show significance at a level of <0.05. Results: Icelandic university students have a low intake of vegetables and salad ("3-4 times per week", n = 159, 24.8%), fruit ("1-2 times per week", n = 164, 25.6%), and whole wheat ("3-4 times per week", n = 147, 23.2%). Lower than these was legume intake ("Never/seldom", n = 203, 32.0%). Meat and eggs were consumed more frequently ("3-4 times per week", n = 231, 36.3%) compared to fish and seafood ("1-2 times per week", n = 277, 43.5%). While the findings do indicate a significant correlation between vegetables and salad and fruit intake (p < 0.001) and between vegetable and salad and legume intake (p < 0.001), causal relationships cannot be established. Among discretionary foods, sweets and snacks were moderately and significantly correlated (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study explores dietary intakes and correlations between dietary factors among university students in Iceland. Further research is needed to explore the potential for causal inferences and better understand these dietary behaviors of university students in Iceland.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diets including pulses are associated with better cardiovascular profiles, including lipid, glycemia, and hemodynamics; however, evidence is lacking regarding the contributions of individual pulse varieties. OBJECTIVES This randomized, controlled trial examined the effects of beans or peas individually, relative to rice, on LDL-cholesterol levels (primary outcome) and other indices of cardiovascular disease risk (secondary outcomes) at 6 wk in adults with mild hypercholesterolemia. METHODS This randomized, controlled, single-blind, 3-arm parallel-group study was conducted in 2 Canadian cities (Edmonton, Alberta; Winnipeg, Manitoba). Participants (n = 60 per group) were randomly assigned to 6 wk of regular consumption of foods containing either 120 g (∼0.75 cups) of beans (mixture of black, great northern, navy, and pinto) or 120 g (∼0.75 cups) peas (mixture of yellow and green), or identical foods containing white, parboiled rice (control foods). LDL-cholesterol (primary outcome) and indices of lipid metabolism, glycemia, and hemodynamics (secondary outcomes) were assessed. RESULTS Mean LDL-cholesterol was lower in the bean group (-0.21; 95% CI: -0.39, -0.03) but not the pea group (-0.11; 95% CI: -0.29, 0.07) relative to rice after 6 wk. Non-HDL-cholesterol (-0.20; 95% CI: -0.40, -0.002) and total cholesterol (-0.28; 95% CI: -0.49, -0.06) were also lower in the bean compared with rice groups. No changes were noted in triglycerides (-0.07; 95% CI: -0.28, 0.14), glucose (0.02; 95% CI: -0.17, 0.14), insulin (4.94; 95% CI: -5.51, 11.38), or blood pressure (systolic: -1.39; 95% CI: -5.18, 2.40; diastolic: -1.89; 95% CI: -4.65, 0.88). Dietary fiber intake (grams per day or grams per 1000 kcal) was not correlated with LDL-cholesterol (grams per day: r2 = 0.209, P = 0.142; grams per 1000 kcal: r2 =0.126, P = 0.379) in the bean group. Gastrointestinal effects were transient and most often not related to the study foods. CONCLUSIONS Beans, but not peas, lowered LDL-cholesterol, relative to rice, in adults with mild hypercholesterolemia. Fiber may not be responsible for the effect of beans, suggesting other phytochemicals may be the active component(s). Strategies incorporating 120 g of pulses in a meal are feasible for managing some cardiometabolic risk factors. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT01661543.

Abstract
Importance The impact of dietary fat intake on long-term human health has attracted substantial research interest, and the health effects of diverse dietary fats depend on available food sources. Yet there is a paucity of data elucidating the links between dietary fats from specific food sources and health. Objective To study associations of dietary plant and animal fat intake with overall mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Design, Setting, and Participants This large prospective cohort study took place in the US from 1995 to 2019. The analysis of men and women was conducted in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study. Data were analyzed from February 2021 to May 2024. Exposures Specific food sources of dietary fats and other dietary information were collected at baseline, using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Main Outcomes and Measures Hazard ratios (HRs) and 24-year adjusted absolute risk differences (ARDs) were estimated using multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression. Results The analysis included 407 531 men and women (231 881 [56.9%] male; the mean [SD] age of the cohort was 61.2 [5.4] years). During 8 107 711 person-years of follow-up, 185 111 deaths were ascertained, including 58 526 CVD deaths. After multivariable adjustment (including adjustment for the relevant food sources), a greater intake of plant fat (HRs, 0.91 and 0.86; adjusted ARDs, -1.10% and -0.73%; P for trend < .001), particularly fat from grains (HRs, 0.92 and 0.86; adjusted ARDs, -0.98% and -0.71%; P for trend < .001) and vegetable oils (HRs, 0.88 and 0.85; adjusted ARDs, -1.40% and -0.71%; P for trend < .001), was associated with a lower risk for overall and CVD mortality, respectively, comparing the highest to the lowest quintile. In contrast, a higher intake of total animal fat (HRs, 1.16 and 1.14; adjusted ARDs, 0.78% and 0.32%; P for trend < .001), dairy fat (HRs, 1.09 and 1.07; adjusted ARDs, 0.86% and 0.24%; P for trend < .001), or egg fat (HRs, 1.13 and 1.16; adjusted ARDs, 1.40% and 0.82%; P for trend < .001) was associated with an increased risk for mortality for overall and CVD mortality, respectively, comparing the highest to the lowest quintile. Replacement of 5% energy from animal fat with 5% energy from plant fat, particularly fat from grains or vegetable oils, was associated with a lower risk for mortality: 4% to 24% reduction in overall mortality, and 5% to 30% reduction in CVD mortality. Conclusions and Relevance The findings from this prospective cohort study demonstrated consistent but small inverse associations between a higher intake of plant fat, particularly fat from grains and vegetable oils, and a lower risk for both overall and CVD mortality. A diet with a high intake of animal-based fat, including fat from dairy foods and eggs, was also shown to be associated with an elevated risk for both overall and CVD mortality.

Abstract
Current cardiovascular prevention guidelines emphasise considering sex, gender, and gender identity in risk assessment. This study evaluated the impact of lifestyle habits and chronic diseases on cardiovascular mortality risk in women over 50 with high vascular risk and developed a predictive model for menopausal women with cardiovascular risk factors. A retrospective cohort study used data from the 2011 Spanish National Health Survey and the national death register, focusing on menopausal and postmenopausal women without prior cardiovascular events but with at least one major risk factor. Participants were followed for up to 10 years, assessing mortality from circulatory system diseases and other causes. Exposure variables included socio-demographics, lifestyle habits, health status, self-perceived health, health service use, and pharmacological treatments. Of the 21,007 respondents, 3057 women met the inclusion criteria. The 10-year cumulative incidence of mortality from circulatory causes was 5.9%, and from other causes, 12.7%. Independent predictors of cardiovascular mortality were never consuming legumes, poor self-perceived health, diabetes treatment, lack of physical activity, and older age. Lipid-lowering treatment was protective. The model demonstrated good fit and predictive capacity (C-index = 0.773). This study highlights the significant influence of physical activity, legume consumption, self-perceived health, and specific treatments on cardiovascular mortality risk in menopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Novel plant-based meat and dairy alternatives are designed to mimic and replace animal-sourced products, yet their nutritional composition differs from traditional alternatives such as legumes and beans. The nutritional impacts of switching from animal-sourced to traditional or novel plant-based alternatives remains unclear. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to model the impact of partial and complete substitution of animal-sourced meat and dairy products with traditional or novel plant-based alternatives on diet quality and nutrient adequacy in a nationally representative sample of Australian adults. METHODS Dietary data (1 24-h recall) from the Australian Health Survey 2011-2013 (n = 9115; ≥19 y) were analyzed. Four models simulated partial or complete substitution of animal-sourced meat and dairy with traditional or novel plant-based alternatives. Diet quality was assessed using the Dietary Guideline Index (DGI), and nutrient adequacy was determined using age- and sex-specific nutrient reference values. Modeled diets were compared to a baseline diet using survey-weighted paired t tests. RESULTS DGI scores improved by 0.3% to 6.0% for all models across all sex and age groups compared to baseline. Improvements in diet quality were greatest for the complete substitution to traditional alternatives (5.1% average increase in DGI). Overall, inclusion of plant-based alternatives (complete or partial) decreased saturated fat and increased dietary fiber. Long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased to below adequate intakes for all complete substitution models. Substitution with traditional alternatives decreased sodium and increased calcium, whereas substitution with novel alternatives increased sodium and decreased calcium. CONCLUSIONS All models using traditional alternatives, and the partial substitution using novel alternatives, showed small but statistically significant improvements in diet quality. Nutrient adequacy varied between models, with nutrients including saturated fat, sodium, calcium, and long-chain fatty acids implicated. Findings highlight the importance of informed choices when switching to traditional or novel plant-based alternatives to prevent suboptimal dietary intake.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Data on nutrient and diet quality outcomes when additional beans are consumed as part of the typical American dietary pattern are scarce. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of increased bean consumption, in the typical American dietary pattern, on the intake of shortfall nutrients and overall diet quality. METHODS Using data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001-2018, the current analyses modeled the addition of one and two servings of canned and dried beans in all adults (N = 44,574; ≥19 y), younger adults (N = 23,554; 19-50 y) and older adults (N = 21,020; ≥51 y). The beans considered were kidney beans, black beans, chickpeas, and pinto beans. RESULTS The modeling of beans to the typical American dietary pattern resulted in significant increases in the intake of several shortfall nutrients, including dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium, iron, folate, and choline (p's < 0.0001). Modeling 1 and 2 servings of beans daily to the US typical dietary pattern significantly increased overall diet quality in all adult age groups considered. Total diet quality, as measured by Healthy Eating Index-2015 scores, was 15-16 % greater with an additional serving of beans and 19-20 % higher with 2 servings of beans relative to the US typical dietary pattern (p values<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Dietary patterns that are rich in beans are associated with significantly higher diet quality scores and greater intake of shortfall nutrients, including nutrients of public health concern. Dietary guidance should consider the health benefits associated with the promotion of increased consumption of canned and dry beans in dietary patterns as benefits seen in younger adults continue to older adulthood.

Abstract
Plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs) are highly processed food products that typically replace meat in the diet. In Canada, the growing demand for PBMAs coincides with public health recommendations to reduce ultra-processed food consumption, which prompts the need to investigate the long-term health implications of PBMAs. This review assesses the available literature on PBMAs and cardiovascular disease (CVD), including an evaluation of their nutritional profile and impact on CVD risk factors. Overall, the nutritional profiles of PBMAs vary considerably but generally align with recommendations for improving cardiovascular health; compared with meat, PBMAs are usually lower in saturated fat and higher in polyunsaturated fat and dietary fibre. Some dietary trials that have replaced meat with PBMAs have reported improvements in CVD risk factors, including total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, apolipoprotein B-100, and body weight. No currently available evidence suggests that the concerning aspects of PMBAs (eg, food processing and high sodium content) negate the potential cardiovascular benefits. We conclude that replacing meat with PBMAs may be cardioprotective; however, long-term randomised controlled trials and prospective cohort studies that evaluate CVD events (eg, myocardial infarction, stroke) are essential to draw more definitive conclusions.

Abstract
In recent decades, global life expectancies have risen significantly, accompanied by a marked increase in chronic diseases and population aging. This narrative review aims to summarize recent findings on the dietary factors influencing chronic diseases and longevity, primarily from large cohort studies. First, maintaining a healthy weight throughout life is pivotal for healthy aging and longevity, mirroring the benefits of lifelong, moderate calorie restriction in today's obesogenic food environment. Second, the specific types or food sources of dietary fat, protein, and carbohydrates are more important in influencing chronic disease risk and mortality than their quantity. Third, some traditional diets (e.g., the Mediterranean, Nordic, and Okinawa) and contemporary dietary patterns, such as healthy plant-based diet index, the DASH (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) diet, and alternate healthy eating index, have been associated with lower mortality and healthy longevity. These patterns share many common components (e.g., a predominance of nutrient-rich plant foods; limited red and processed meats; culinary herbs and spices prevalent in global cuisines) while embracing distinct elements from different cultures. Fourth, combining a healthy diet with other lifestyle factors could extend disease-free life expectancies by 8-10 years. While adhering to core principles of healthy diets, it is crucial to adapt dietary recommendations to individual preferences and cultures as well as nutritional needs of aging populations. Public health strategies should aim to create a healthier food environment where nutritious options are readily accessible, especially in public institutions and care facilities for the elderly. Although further mechanistic studies and human trials are needed to better understand molecular effects of diet on aging, there is a pressing need to establish and maintain long-term cohorts studying diet and aging in culturally diverse populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited evidence is available that focuses on beans within American dietary patterns and health. The purpose of this study was to identify commonly consumed adult dietary patterns that included beans and compare shortfall nutrient intakes and diet quality, relative to adults whose typical dietary pattern did not include beans. METHODS The analyses used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001-2018. Cluster analysis was used to identify bean patterns of consumption, while the USDA food coding system defined daily beans consumed. Five bean dietary patterns of consumption were identified, of which four patterns included both canned beans and dry beans, while one pattern had no bean consumption. Bean consumption was defined as those consuming kidney beans, black beans, chickpeas, and/or pinto beans. RESULTS Adults consuming Bean Dietary Patterns 1, 2, 3 and 4 had significantly higher diet quality scores (as assessed by USDA's Healthy Eating Index-2015) compared to the no-bean pattern (61.2 ± 0.5, 58.9 ± 0.5, 55.2 ± 0.4 and 56.5 ± 0.8 vs 48.8 ± 0.2 p's < 0.0001). Bean consumers also had significantly higher intakes of several shortfall nutrients (choline, alpha-linolenic acid, folate, iron, magnesium and vitamin E) relative to non-consumers of beans. Similarly, intake of dietary fiber, potassium and calcium, all nutrients of public health concern were significantly higher in bean patterns compared to no-beans. Bean Dietary Pattern 1 (~ 13.5% of total daily kcal from beans or ~ 2 servings of beans/day) and 2 (~ 9.5% of total daily kcal from beans or ~ 1.7 servings of beans/day) were significantly associated with lower BMI, decreased body weight and improved waist circumference relative to no-beans. CONCLUSIONS Dietary patterns that are rich in canned and dry beans were associated with significantly higher diet quality scores and greater intake of shortfall nutrients, including nutrients of public health concern. Bean dietary patterns were also associated with improved weight-related outcomes. Dietary guidance should consider the nutrient and health benefits associated with the promotion of increased canned and dry bean consumption in American dietary patterns.

Abstract
Lentils have potential to improve metabolic health but there are limited randomized clinical trials evaluating their comprehensive impact on metabolism. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of lentil-based vs. meat-based meals on fasting and postprandial measures of glucose and lipid metabolism and inflammation. Thirty-eight adults with an increased waist circumference (male ≥ 40 inches and female ≥ 35 inches) participated in a 12-week dietary intervention that included seven prepared midday meals totaling either 980 g (LEN) or 0 g (CON) of cooked green lentils per week. Linear models were used to assess changes in fasting and postprandial markers from pre- to post-intervention by meal group. Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms were assessed through a survey randomly delivered once per week during the intervention. We found that regular consumption of lentils lowered fasting LDL (F = 5.53, p = 0.02) and total cholesterol levels (F = 8.64, p < 0.01) as well as postprandial glucose (β = -0.99, p = 0.01), IL-17 (β = -0.68, p = 0.04), and IL-1β (β = -0.70, p = 0.03) responses. GI symptoms were not different by meal group and all symptoms were reported as "none" or "mild" for the duration of the intervention. Our results suggest that daily lentil consumption may be helpful in lowering cholesterol and postprandial glycemic and inflammatory responses without causing GI stress. This information further informs the development of pulse-based dietary strategies to lower disease risk and to slow or reverse metabolic disease progression in at-risk populations.

Abstract
The programme aimed to improve selected cardiometabolic risk (CMR) variables using a nutritional intervention among farmers who reported hypertensive disorders as hindrances during agricultural activities. The intervention had two case controls (n = 103) [experimental group-EG (n = 53) and control group-CG (n = 50)] which were tracked and whose blood pressure measurements, dietary intake, blood indices for cholesterol concentration and glucose levels from pre- and post-intervention surveys after the baseline survey (n = 112) were analysed. The interval for data collection was 12 weeks (±120 days) after five legume varieties were consumed between 3 and 5 times a day, and servings were not <125 g per at least three times per week. Sixty-five per cent of farmers were above 60 years old, with mean age ranges of 63.3 (SD ± 6.3) years for women and 67.2 (SD ± 6.7) for men. The post-intervention survey revealed that EG blood results indicated nutrient improvement with p <= 0.05 for blood glucose (p = 0.003) and cholesterol (p = 0.001) as opposed to the CG. A trend analysis revealed that cholesterol (p = 0.033) and systolic blood pressure (SBP); (p = 0.013) were statistically significant when comparing genders for all study phases. Interventions focusing on legumes can improve hypertension and cardiovascular disease and fast-track the achievement of SGDs 3 and 12 through community-based programmes.

Abstract
To realize the potential of sainfoins to contribute to sustainable agriculture and expand on demonstrated uses and benefits, de novo domestication is occurring to develop perennial Baki™ bean, the trade name used by The Land Institute for pulses (i.e., grain legumes) derived from sainfoins. The objective of this study was to characterize amino acid and fatty acid profiles of depodded seeds from commercial sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) seed lots, and compare these results with data published in the Global Food Composition Database for Pulses. The fatty acid profile consisted primarily of polyunsaturated fatty acids (56.8%), compared to monounsaturated (29.0%) and saturated fatty acids (14.2%), and n-3 fatty acids (39.5%), compared to n-9 (28.4%) and n-6 (17.6%) fatty acids. The essential fatty acid linolenic acid (18,3 n-3) was the most abundant fatty acid (39.2%), followed by oleic acid (18,1 cis-9) (27.8%), and the essential fatty acid linoleic acid (18,2 n-6) (17.3%). The amino acid profile consisted primarily of the nonessential amino acids glutamic acid (18.3%), arginine (11.6%), and aspartic acid (10.8%), followed by the essential amino acids leucine (6.8%), and lysine (5.8%). Essential amino acid content met adult daily requirements for each amino acid. This indicates that sainfoin seeds may be a complete plant protein source. However, further research is necessary to better understand protein quality, defined by protein digestibility in addition to the amino acid profile. By demonstrating favorable fatty acid and amino acid profiles to human health, these results contribute to a growing body of evidence supporting the potential benefits of perennial Baki™ bean, a novel, perennial pulse derived from sainfoins.

Abstract
Pulses are dry seeds of legumes which are high in fiber and contain plant protein and several important macronutrients. Our aim was to model the nutritional effects of substituting servings of protein foods and/or refined grains with servings of beans and peas in the Healthy U.S.-Style Pattern identified in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025. Dietary modeling was accomplished by substituting nutrients of protein foods and/or refined grains with nutrients of the USDA's beans and peas (pulses) composite in the 2000 kcal Healthy U.S.-Style Pattern. A 10% or more change was used as an indicator of meaningful differences. Cost implications were computed by adding the cost of pulses and subtracting the cost of protein foods/refined grains according to the modeling scenario. The substitution of 6-8 oz/week protein foods with 1.5-2.0 cups/week pulses increased fiber and decreased cholesterol. Higher amounts of pulses replacing refined grains or combinations of protein foods and refined grains generally increase fiber, iron, magnesium, potassium, and copper depending on the modeling scenarios. All modeling scenarios of substituting the servings of protein foods alone or in combination with refined grains with the servings of pulses were associated with cost savings. Our results suggest that encouraging increased pulse consumption may be an effective strategy for improving diet.

Abstract
Despite a multitude of investigations assessing the impact of green coffee extract supplementation on obesity indices, there is still a great deal of heated debate regarding the benefits of this intervention in obesity management. Therefore, in order to clarify the effect of green coffee extract on waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI) and body weight (BW), we conducted an umbrella review of interventional meta-analyses. The Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed/Medline, and Embase databases were searched using specific keywords and word combinations. The umbrella meta-analysis was performed using the Stata software version 17 (Stata Corp. College Station, Texas, USA). We pooled effect sizes (ES) and confidence intervals (CI) for the outcomes using the random effects model (the DerSimonian and Laird method). In total, 5 eligible meta-analyses were included in the final quantitative assessment. Data pooled from 5 eligible papers revealed that green coffee extract can reduce BW (WMD: -1.22 kg, 95% CI: -1.53 to -0.92, p < 0.001), BMI (WMD: -0.48 kg/m2, 95% CI: -0.67 to -0.29, p < 0.001) and WC (WMD: -0.55 cm, 95% CI: -0.80 to -0.31, p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses highlighted that green coffee extract supplementation in dosages ≤600 mg/day and interventions lasting >7 wk are more likely to decrease BW. The present umbrella meta-analysis confirms the beneficial effects of green coffee extract in reducing WC, BMI, and BW. Thus, we may infer that green coffee extract can be used as a complementary therapy in the management of obesity.

Abstract
Inconsistencies are evident within the literature regarding the role of Green Tea (GT) supplementation on women living with obesity. To address this, we conducted to determine the impact of GT supplementation on the weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) in overweight and obese women using time and dose-response meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). This meta-analysis searched electronic Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and PubMed/Medline databases from inception to December 1st, 2022. Data were reported as weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). A total of 2061 references were identified, and 15 articles with 16 RCT arms on body weight, 17 RCT arms on BMI, and 7 RCT arms on WC were included in the meta-analysis. GT supplementation significantly decreases body weight (WMD: -1.23 kg, 95% CI: -2.13 to -0.33, p = 0.007), BMI (WMD: -0.47 kg/m2, 95% CI: -0.87 to -0.07, p = 0.020) and WC (WMD: -3.46 cm, 95% CI: -6.75 to -0.16, p = 0.040). In subgroup analyses, GT consumption demonstrated lowered body weight with dosaes ≥1000 mg/day (WMD: -1.38 kg), in the RCTs, which lasted ≥8 wk (WMD: -1.24 kg). The non-linear dose-response assessment detected a negative correlation between the changes in body weight and BMI in green tea consumption of more than 1000 (mg/day). The GT supplementation reduced the weight, BMI, and WC in overweight and obese women. In clinical practice, healthcare professionals can recommend using GT with dosages ≥ 1000mg/day and duration ≥ 8 wk in obese women.

Abstract
Legumes are nutrient-dense crops with health-promoting benefits. However, several barriers are associated with their consumption. Emerging issues including food neophobic tendencies or taboos, unclear dietary guidelines on legume consumption, health concerns, and socio-economic reasons, as well as long cooking procedures, adversely affect legume consumption frequency. Pre-treatment methods, including soaking, sprouting, and pulse electric field technology, are effective in reducing the alpha-oligosaccharides and other anti-nutritional factors, eventually lowering cooking time for legumes. Extrusion technology used for innovative development of legume-enriched products, including snacks, breakfast cereals and puffs, baking and pasta, represents a strategic way to promote legume consumption. Culinary skills such as legume salads, legume sprouts, stews, soups, hummus, and the development of homemade cake recipes using legume flour could represent effective ways to promote legume consumption. This review aims to highlight the nutritional and health effects associated with legume consumption, and strategies to improve their digestibility and nutritional profile. Additionally, proper educational and culinary approaches aimed to improve legumes intake are discussed.

Abstract
Many cancers are associated with poor diet, lack of physical activity, and excess weight. Improving any of these three lifestyle factors would likely reduce cancer deaths. However, modifications to each of these-better nutrition, enhanced activity and fitness, and loss of extra body fat-have different effect sizes on cancer mortality. This review will highlight the relative benefit that each lifestyle change, enacted prior to a diagnosis of cancer, might impart on cancer-related deaths, as well as attempt to quantify the changes required to derive such a benefit. The review relies primarily on epidemiological data, with meta-analyses serving as the backbone for comparisons across interventions and individual studies within the larger meta-analyses providing the data necessary to form more quantitative conclusions. The reader can then use this information to better understand, recommend, and implement behaviors that might ultimately reduce cancer mortality. Of all the interventions, it seems clear that exercise, specifically improving cardiorespiratory fitness, is the best way to decrease the risk of dying from cancer.
