Abstract
AIM The classical features of Binder's syndrome (BS) have been widely reported, yet there is a lack of information on diagnostic and treatment challenges. Therefore, we aimed to review the literature on various aspects, including the role of a multidisciplinary approach in the management of BS. METHODS A thorough literature search was performed on PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Ovid, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar using the keywords"Maxillonasal dysplasia", "Maxillonasal dysostosis", "nasomaxillary hypoplasia", "Binder type", "Binder syndrome", "Binder phenotype", and "OMIM 155050". In addition, the articles published in the English language from the inception of the database until June 2021 were considered. RESULTS The search of different databases yielded 958 publications, out of which 145 relevant articles were reviewed. The studies were categorised by year of publication, study design, and theme. Most of the studies were case reports (42%) followed by case series (19%). The most reported topic was based on different surgical techniques (42%). Finally, the results were synthesised into a narrative review. CONCLUSIONS The need for a multidisciplinary approach involving clinicians from different specialities is highlighted. Future research is warranted to develop concrete clinical guidelines for the management of this syndrome.

Abstract
Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a chronic congenital form of erythrocytic hypoplasia in which erythroid precursor cell levels are low. DBA reflects ribosomal dysfunction and is accompanied by hematopoietic cell apoptosis, anemia, and various somatic symptoms. We report the characteristic symptoms of the craniofacial region and the orthodontic treatments of two DBA cases. Case 1 was a 12-year-old female. The typical physical and facial characteristics of DBA were lacking. On initial examination, she exhibited a skeletal Class II jaw and end to end molar relationships and a large overjet. An edgewise appliance was placed after extraction of the first maxillary premolars. After 3 years and 11 months, an appropriate overjet and overbite, rigid intercuspation, and an acceptable profile were evident without any clinical adverse effects. Case 2 was a 13-year-old female. She exhibited a skeletal Class I jaw relationship, a spaced dental arch, the maxillofacial dysplasia characteristic of Binder syndrome, hypoplasia of the right mandibular condyle, and labial protrusions of the maxillary and mandibular incisors. We placed an edgewise appliance and after 1 year and 7 months, the occlusion was optimal in the absence of any adverse effects. Our two DBA cases exhibited a broad spectrum of physical and dentofacial symptoms. Patients with DBA are often prescribed combined steroid/bisphosphonate therapies. Both agents are likely to affect alveolar bone remodeling after tooth extraction and orthodontic tooth movement. Careful consideration of medication with reference to various dentofacial characteristics is necessary.

Abstract
Binder syndrome (BS) is an uncommon congenital disorder affecting the face. The condition, which also goes by the names naso-maxillary hypoplasia (NMH) and maxilla-facial dysplasia (MFD), causes the central face to develop inward and may also affect the upper jaw and the nose. A 19-year-old male with a known case of BS presented with a complaint of poor esthetics since birth. Previously, the patient was admitted to a private hospital where he was operated on for cleft lip and palate in the years 2003 and 2005. In 2017, he visited the dental clinic where the orthodontic treatment started for poor esthetics, and then he was referred to the oral surgery ward for surgical intervention. For about five years, he has been undergoing orthodontic treatment. A physical examination of the oral cavity was done and the physician suggested a CT scan of the brain. Recently, the patient underwent bilateral Le Fort II osteotomy with distraction osteogenesis under general anesthesia which repaired the patient's esthetics.

Abstract
Craniofacial dysmorphism is associated with thousands of genetic and environmental disorders. Delineation of salient facial characteristics can guide clinicians towards a correct clinical diagnosis and understanding the pathogenesis of the disorder. Abnormal facial shape might require craniofacial surgical intervention, with the restoration of normal shape an important surgical outcome. Facial anthropometric growth curves or standards of single inter-landmark measurements have traditionally supported assessments of normal and abnormal facial shape, for both clinical and research applications. However, these fail to capture the full complexity of facial shape. With the increasing availability of 3D photographs, methods of assessment that take advantage of the rich information contained in such images are needed. In this article we derive and present open-source three-dimensional (3D) growth curves of the human face. These are sequences of age and sex-specific expected 3D facial shapes and statistical models of the variation around the expected shape, derived from 5443 3D images. We demonstrate the use of these growth curves for assessing patients and show that they identify normal and abnormal facial morphology independent from age-specific facial features. 3D growth curves can facilitate use of state-of-the-art 3D facial shape assessment by the broader clinical and biomedical research community. This advance in phenotype description will support clinical diagnosis and the understanding of disease pathogenesis including genotype–phenotype relations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this prospective study was to compare adolescent and post-adolescent growth periods regarding the effectiveness of conventional activator appliance in patients with Class II mandibular retrognathia by using lateral cephalometric radiographs and three-dimensional photogrammetry (3dMDface). MATERIAL AND METHODS We enrolled 2 groups: 15 patients in the adolescent growth period and 17 patients in the post-adolescent growth period. All patients had Class II anomaly with mandibular retrognathia and were treated with conventional activator appliances. Lateral cephalometric radiographs and three-dimensional photogrammetric views were obtained at the beginning and end of the activator treatment of Class II patients. Maxillomandibular discrepancy, mandibular protrusion and lengths, convexity angles, facial heights, and dental measurements were evaluated cephalometrically. Projections of the lips and the chin and volumetric measurements of the lip and the mandibular area were assessed using three-dimensional photogrammetry. RESULTS Conventional activator therapy resulted in similar effects in both growth periods regarding improvements in the mandibular sagittal growth and maxillomandibular relationship (ANB° and the SNB° angles). Mandibular effective length was increased (Co-Gn length) and the maxillary horizontal growth was restricted (decreased SNA° angle) in both groups following the treatment. Treatment duration was significantly longer in the post-adolescent group. Increases in the projections of menton, pogonion, and sublabial points were observed in the three-dimensional photogrammetric views. Total lip volume was reduced while the mandibular volume was significantly increased in both groups. Lower gonial angle showed a greater increase in the post-adolescent group. CONCLUSIONS Correction of Class II anomaly with mandibular retrognathia was achieved with a combination of dental and skeletal changes in both growth periods. Conventional activator therapy may be an alternative treatment approach in the late growth period as it led to significant skeletal and dental changes.

A Simple Standardized Three-Dimensional Anthropometry for the Periocular Region in a European Population. Plast Reconstr Surg 2020; 145:514e-523e. Abstract
BACKGROUND The three-dimensional surface imaging system is becoming more common in plastic surgeries. However, few studies have assessed three-dimensional periocular structures and surgical outcomes. This study aimed to propose a standardized three-dimensional anthropometric protocol for the periocular region, investigate its precision and accuracy, and determine the three-dimensional periocular anthropometric norms for young Caucasians. METHODS Thirty-nine healthy young Caucasians (78 eyes) were enrolled. Three-dimensional facial images were obtained with a VECTRA M3 stereophotogrammetry device. Thirty-eight measurements in periocular regions were obtained from these images. Every subject underwent facial surface capture twice to evaluate its precision. A paper ruler was applied to assess its accuracy. RESULTS Sixty-three percent of measurements in linear distances, curvatures, angles, and indices were found to reach a statistically significant difference between sexes (p ≤ 0.05, respectively). Across all measurements, the average mean absolute difference was 0.29 mm in linear dimensions, 0.56 mm in curvatures, 1.67 degrees in angles, and 0.02 in indices. In relative error of magnitude, 18 percent of the measurements were determined excellent, 51 percent very good, 31 percent good, and none moderate. The mean value of the paper-ruler scale was 10.01 ± 0.05 mm, the mean absolute difference value 0.02 mm, and the relative error of magnitude 0.17 percent. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to propose a detailed and standardized three-dimensional anthropometric protocol for the periocular region and confirm its high precision and accuracy. The results provided novel metric data concerning young Caucasian periocular anthropometry and determined the variability between sexes.

Abstract
Objective:
The purpose of this study involves describing the facial morphology of a Colombian population with three-dimensional (3D) imaging, and comparing their facial morphology with the Caucasian to create a database for this ethnicity.
Materials and Methods:
The study, which included 135 subjects selected from the Valle University in Cali, Colombia, and 535 Caucasian subjects selected from the FaceBase–Data (1U01DE024449–01), was funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. All images were taken in the natural head position (NHP) and captured using a stereo-photogrammetric camera system (3dMDface) to obtain a 3D image of each patient. The subjects were between 19 to 31 years of age, with a normal body mass index (BMI), and no craniofacial deformities. All images were plotted and analyzed using the 3dMDVultus software to calculate linear and angular measurements. Results:
The Hispanic population had wider eyes, more protruded upper and lower lips, wider face, and greater mandibular width. Caucasian females had a more acute full profile, larger middle third, and less protrusive lips. Understanding the facial morphology of different populations would help to establish a better diagnosis and treatment planning for each ethnicity.
Conclusions:
From this study, the following conclusions may be drawn:
1. The mean values of Colombian males showed greater measurements than females in the majority of measurements. 2. Caucasian females had a more acute full profile, larger middle and lower third, and less protrusive lips. 3. This study showed significant ethnic differences in the linear and angular measurements, showing us the importance of considering these findings in the diagnosis and treatment planning when a Hispanic population is involved. Soft tissue values should reflect the norms according to each ethnic population in order to achieve treatment goals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Congenital midfacial hypoplasia often requires intensive treatments and is a typical condition for the Binder phenotype and syndromic craniosynostosis. The growth trait of the midfacial skeleton during the early fetal period has been assumed to be critical for such an anomaly. However, previous embryological studies using 2-dimensional analyses and specimens during the late fetal period have not been sufficient to reveal it. OBJECTIVE To understand the morphogenesis of the midfacial skeleton in the early fetal period via 3-dimensional quantification of the growth trait and investigation of the developmental association between the growth centers and midface. METHODS Magnetic resonance images were obtained from 60 human fetuses during the early fetal period. Three-dimensional shape changes in the craniofacial skeleton along growth were quantified and visualized using geometric morphometrics. Subsequently, the degree of development was computed. Furthermore, the developmental association between the growth centers and the midfacial skeleton was statistically investigated and visualized. RESULTS The zygoma expanded drastically in the anterolateral dimension, and the lateral part of the maxilla developed forward until approximately 13 weeks of gestation. The growth centers such as the nasal septum and anterior portion of the sphenoid were highly associated with the forward growth of the midfacial skeleton (RV = 0.589; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS The development of the midface, especially of the zygoma, before 13 weeks of gestation played an essential role in the midfacial development. Moreover, the growth centers had a strong association with midfacial forward growth before birth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study were to evaluate sexual dimorphism for facial features within Colombian and Mexican-American populations and to compare the facial morphology by sex between these 2 populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three-dimensional facial images were acquired by using the portable 3dMDface system, which captured 223 subjects from 2 population groups of Colombians (n = 131) and Mexican-Americans (n = 92). Each population was categorized into male and female groups for evaluation. All subjects in the groups were aged between 18 and 30 years and had no apparent facial anomalies. A total of 21 anthropometric landmarks were identified on the 3-dimensional faces of each subject. The independent t test was used to analyze each data set obtained within each subgroup. RESULTS The Colombian males showed significantly greater width of the outercanthal width, eye fissure length, and orbitale than the Colombian females. The Colombian females had significantly smaller lip and mouth measurements for all distances except upper vermillion height than Colombian males. The Mexican-American females had significantly smaller measurements with regard to the nose than Mexican-American males. Meanwhile, the heights of the face, the upper face, the lower face, and the mandible were all significantly less in the Mexican-American females. The intercanthal and outercanthal widths were significantly greater in the Mexican-American males and females. Meanwhile, the orbitale distance of Mexican-American sexes was significantly smaller than those of the Colombian males and females. The Mexican-American group had significantly larger nose width and length of alare than the Colombian group regarding both sexes. With respect to the nasal tip protrusion and nose height, they were significantly smaller in the Colombian females than in the Mexican-American females. The face width was significantly greater in the Colombian males and females. CONCLUSIONS Sexual dimorphism for facial features was presented in both the Colombian and Mexican-American populations. In addition, there were significant differences in facial morphology between these 2 populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Disturbance of the development of the nasal septum in the early prenatal period causes congenital facial anomalies characterized by a flat nose and defects of the anterior nasal spine (ANS), such as Binder phenotype. The present research aimed to assess the development of the nasal septum and the ANS with growth in the early prenatal period. METHODS Magnetic resonance images were obtained from 56 specimens. Mid-sagittal images were analyzed by using geometric morphometrics for the development of the nasal septum, and angle analysis was performed for the development of the ANS. Additionally, we calculated and visualized the ontogenetic allometry of the nasal septum. RESULTS Our results showed that the nasal septum changed shape in the anteroposterior direction in smaller specimens, while it maintained an almost isometric shape in larger specimens. Furthermore, mathematical evidence revealed that the maturation periods of the shapes of the ANS and the nasal septum were around 12 and 14 weeks of gestation, respectively. CONCLUSION The anteroposterior development of the nasal septum is specific until 14 weeks of gestation, and it is important for nasal protrusion and the development of the ANS. Therefore, the disturbance of such development could induce low nasal deformity, including Binder phenotype. © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study were to evaluate sexual dimorphism for facial features within Chinese and African American populations and to compare the facial morphology by sex between these 2 populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three-dimensional facial images were acquired by using the portable 3dMDface System, which captured 189 subjects from 2 population groups of Chinese (n = 72) and African American (n = 117). Each population was categorized into male and female groups for evaluation. All subjects in the groups were aged between 18 and 30 years and had no apparent facial anomalies. A total of 23 anthropometric landmarks were identified on the three-dimensional faces of each subject. Twenty-one measurements in 4 regions, including 19 distances and 2 angles, were not only calculated but also compared within and between the Chinese and African American populations. The Student's t-test was used to analyze each data set obtained within each subgroup. RESULTS Distinct facial differences were presented between the examined subgroups. When comparing the sex differences of facial morphology in the Chinese population, significant differences were noted in 71.43% of the parameters calculated, and the same proportion was found in the African American group. The facial morphologic differences between the Chinese and African American populations were evaluated by sex. The proportion of significant differences in the parameters calculated was 90.48% for females and 95.24% for males between the 2 populations. The African American population had a more convex profile and greater face width than those of the Chinese population. CONCLUSIONS Sexual dimorphism for facial features was presented in both the Chinese and African American populations. In addition, there were significant differences in facial morphology between these 2 populations.

Abstract
Orthodontics and cone beam computed tomography technology have evolved tremendously in the last 10 years. The technology has evolved from a predominantly diagnostic entity to a true clinical and translational product. One can believe that this technology is here to stay and it has a real role to revolutionize the efficiency and effectiveness of orthodontic care. This article discusses the current advancements and use of cone beam computed tomography.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to compare facial morphologies of an adult African-American population to an adult Caucasian-American population using three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS The images were captured using a stereophotogrammetric system (3dMDface(TM) system). Subjects were aged 19-30 years, with normal body mass index and no gross craniofacial anomalies. Images were aligned and combined using RF6 Plus Pack 2 software to produce a male and female facial average for each population. The averages were superimposed and the differences were assessed. RESULTS The most distinct differences were in the forehead, alar base and perioricular regions. The average difference between African-American and Caucasian-American females was 1·18±0·98 mm. The African-American females had a broader face, wider alar base and more protrusive lips. The Caucasian-American females had a more prominent chin, malar region and lower forehead. The average difference between African-American and Caucasian-American males was 1·11±1·04 mm. The African-American males had a more prominent upper forehead and periocular region, wider alar base and more protrusive lips. No notable difference occurred between chin points of the two male populations. CONCLUSIONS Average faces were created from 3D photographs, and the facial morphological differences between populations and genders were compared. African-American males had a more prominent upper forehead and periocular region, wider alar base and more protrusive lips. Caucasian-American males showed a more prominent nasal tip and malar area. African-American females had broader face, wider alar base and more protrusive lips. Caucasian-American females showed a more prominent chin point, malar region and lower forehead.

Abstract
Objective Esthetic improvements during orthodontic treatment are achieved by changes in positions of the lips and surrounding soft tissues. Facial soft-tissue movement has already been two-dimensionally evaluated by cephalometry. In this study, we aimed to three-dimensionally assess positional changes of the adult upper lip according to simulated maxillary anterior tooth movements by white light scanning. Methods We measured changes in three-dimensional coordinates of labial landmarks in relation to maxillary incisor movements of normal adults simulated with films of varying thickness by using a white light scanner. Results With increasing protraction, the upper lip moved forward and significantly upward. Labial movement was limited by the surrounding soft tissues. The extent of movement above the vermilion border was slightly less than half that of the teeth, showing strong correlation. Most changes were concentrated in the depression above the upper vermilion border. Labial movement toward the nose was reduced significantly. Conclusions After adequately controlling several variables and using white light scanning with high reproducibility and accuracy, the coefficient of determination showed moderate values (0.40-0.77) and significant changes could be determined. This method would be useful to predict soft-tissue positional changes according to tooth movements.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare the facial morphologies of an adult Chinese population to a Houstonian white population. Three-dimensional (3D) images were acquired via a commercially available stereophotogrammetric camera system, 3dMDface™. Using the system, 100 subjects from a Houstonian population and 71 subjects from a Chinese population were photographed. A complex mathematical algorithm was performed to generate a composite facial average (one for males and one for females) for each subgroup. The computer-generated facial averages were then superimposed based on a previously validated superimposition method. The facial averages were evaluated for differences. Distinct facial differences were evident between the subgroups evaluated. These areas included the nasal tip, the peri-orbital area, the malar process, the labial region, the forehead, and the chin. Overall, the mean facial difference between the Chinese and Houstonian female averages was 2.73±2.20mm, while the difference between the Chinese and Houstonian males was 2.83±2.20mm. The percent similarity for the female population pairings and male population pairings were 10.45% and 12.13%, respectively. The average adult Chinese and Houstonian faces possess distinct differences. Different populations and ethnicities have different facial features and averages that should be considered in the planning of treatment.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Patients with chondrodysplasia punctata (CDP) usually present with Binder-type features, and often CDP is misdiagnosed as Binder syndrome. This study reviewed the management and outcome of patients with Binder syndrome and CDP in a multidisciplinary setting. METHODS The notes and radiographs of the patients managed at the Australian Craniofacial Unit with a multidisciplinary setting since 1976 were reviewed, and data were collected on patient demographics, associated medical and surgical problems, subsequent management, and complications. RESULTS Seventy-seven patients were treated over the 30-year period (5 patients were lost to follow-up); of the remaining 72 patients, 60 (83%) had Binder syndrome, and 12 (17%) were patients with CDP. Forty were males, and 32 were females, with an age range of 6 months to 47 years. Thirteen patients (18%) had a strong family history, and 65 patients (90%) have so far undergone surgical correction, and of those, 35 (54%) have completed their treatment, the longest follow-up time being 18 years. The mean number of surgical procedures was 2.4, and 18 patients (28%) had postoperative complications, which included partial necrosis of the maxilla, osteomyelitis of the mandible, facial nerve and inferior alveolar nerve neuropraxia, nasal bone graft exposure, and cellulitis. DISCUSSION Because of the phenotypic characteristics shared by both Binder syndrome and CDP, it is most likely that Binder syndrome is not a syndrome, nor is it an entity, but most likely to be an "association." We would advocate that these patients should be managed in a multidisciplinary setting.

Abstract
Surgical treatment of maxillonasal dysplasia or Binder syndrome is a challenge for surgeons. Its aim is to replace or substitute the missing or malformed anatomic structures. The authors report a comprehensive analysis for the understanding of the mechanisms resulting in the lack of maxillonasal development observed in Binder syndrome. The evolution of the surgical treatment due to facial function analysis is explained, and the surgical treatment of 20 consecutive cases over the last 20 years is reviewed, illustrated by three-dimensional reconstruction to emphasize the choice made and the results obtained. Bone grafts were always performed, and an arrow-shaped graft for the neospine reconstruction is described. This analysis allowed the authors to ameliorate patient self-image subsequently to facial contour improvement.

Abstract
AIM Bone harvesting from the anterior nasal spine (ANS) is frequently used to correct peri-implant bone defects, particularly during implant placement in the anterior maxilla. However, many clinicians are concerned about the postoperative effect of removing the ANS on the nasal outline, as the ANS is integral to supporting the nose. This study aimed to describe the technique of ANS bone grafting and to investigate postoperative effects of bone harvesting from the ANS on the overall nasal shape. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifteen patients with single maxillary first incisal rehabilitation using dental implant were enrolled in this prospective clinical study. Simply by extending the subperiosteal dissection in the same surgical field without additional local anesthesia, a bone block of about 0.25-0.5 ml could be harvested from the ANS. Nose width (NW), nasolabial angle (NLA), and nasal tip depth (NTD) were measured and analyzed by lateral and frontal photographs taken preoperatively (T0), and at postoperative 1 week (T1), 3 months (T2), and 6 months (T3). Postoperative complications were also recorded. RESULTS A significant increase in NW and decrease in both NLA and NTD were found at T1 (P < 0.05). At T3, NW, NLA and NTD returned to preoperative measurements at T0 without major complications. CONCLUSIONS The ANS could be an effective and easily accessible intraoral source for autologous bone. Despite acute soft tissue swelling, the net postoperative effects of removing the ANS on the overall nasal shape, including on nasal tip collapse or widening of the nose base, were negligible.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A new, low-cost photogrammetric method has been developed for facial morphometry applications. To evaluate the system, tests for the measurement and comparison of three-dimensional virtual faces were carried out in different subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty adult white Italian subjects, 10 men and 10 women, of ages ranging from 23 to 37 years, were included in this study. Three cameras were finely calibrated, and the point precision vector length was calculated, together with the quality parameters. For each subject, 3 different acquisitions were performed. A tessellated surface was obtained from each point cloud. The comparison was made by aligning three-dimensional information from different models. Differences between 2 different models were estimated by analysis of the distances. RESULTS For the cases analyzed, the mean point precision overall root-mean-square vector length was 0.07 mm, with a SD of 0.027 mm. The results are reported for the system's capability of discriminating between the faces of different people. Results of comparisons between facial models of a single person were compared with those of comparisons between different subjects. Student's t-test revealed that the system was able to discriminate among different people, with a P > 95%. Two sex subgroups were formed: the mean error between subgroups ranged from 1.65 to 3.43 mm, and the mean ranged from 1.76 to 2.72 mm. CONCLUSIONS The experiments confirmed the capabilities and the accuracy of the proposed photogrammetric system. Facial comparison was performed by analysis of distances on three-dimensional virtual models.

Abstract
Binder phenotype (BP), or maxillonasal dysostosis, consists of 6 characteristics: arhinoid face, abnormal position of nasal bones, intermaxillary hypoplasia/malocclusion, reduced/absent anterior nasal spine, atrophy of nasal mucosa, and absence of frontal sinus. The purposes of this study were (1) to review the characteristic facial findings, other malformations, and diagnoses in 8 patients with BP; (2) to compare these patients to those in the literature; and (3) to discuss developmental mechanisms, including genetic and environmental factors, involved in this facial defect. An initial 24 cases of BP were identified from the Iowa Registry of Congenital & Inherited Disorders during the period of 1998 to 2008. Chromosome analysis performed in all 24 cases revealed the following: trisomy 21, trisomy 18, and mosaic trisomy 18. Of the 24 patients, 8 met the specific diagnostic characteristics of BP. All 8 patients were evaluated in the genetics clinic at University of Iowa Children's Hospital, having diagnoses of vitamin K epoxide reductase deficiency, Xp22.3 deletion with chondrodysplasia punctata, Stickler syndrome, fetal warfarin syndrome, Robinow syndrome, and unknown etiology. This study, unlike those in the literature, ascertained cases through a population-based active surveillance registry and therefore may better represent the incidence of BP (∼1 per 18,000). Most cases were sporadic with a recognizable pattern of malformation, highlighting that chromosomal, genetic, and exogenous factors may cause BP. Of 8 cases remaining after exclusion of chromosome syndromes, 3 cases had in common the involvement of the vitamin K-dependent metabolic pathway, which likely represents a significant pathogenetic mechanism of BP. Clinical characterization of BP, as in these cases, may allow further understanding of other causative developmental mechanisms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to assess the use of 3-dimensional facial averages for determining morphologic differences from various population groups. METHODS We recruited 473 subjects from 5 populations. Three-dimensional images of the subjects were obtained in a reproducible and controlled environment with a commercially available stereo-photogrammetric camera capture system. Minolta VI-900 (Konica Minolta, Tokyo, Japan) and 3dMDface (3dMD LLC, Atlanta, Ga) systems were used. Each image was obtained as a facial mesh and orientated along a triangulated axis. All faces were overlaid, one on top of the other, and a complex mathematical algorithm was performed until average composite faces of 1 man and 1 woman were achieved for each subgroup. These average facial composites were superimposed based on a previously validated superimposition method, and the facial differences were quantified. RESULTS Distinct facial differences were observed among the groups. The linear differences between surface shells ranged from 0.37 to 1.00 mm for the male groups. The linear differences ranged from 0.28 and 0.87 mm for the women. The color histograms showed that the similarities in facial shells between the subgroups by sex ranged from 26.70% to 70.39% for men and 36.09% to 79.83% for women. The average linear distance from the signed color histograms for the male subgroups ranged from -6.30 to 4.44 mm. The female subgroups ranged from -6.32 to 4.25 mm. CONCLUSIONS Average faces can be efficiently and effectively created from a sample of 3-dimensional faces. Average faces can be used to compare differences in facial morphologies for various populations and sexes. Facial morphologic differences were greatest when totally different ethnic variations were compared. Facial morphologic similarities were present in comparable groups, but there were large variations in concentrated areas of the face.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the facial morphologies of an adult Egyptian population with those of a Houstonian white population. MATERIALS AND METHODS The three-dimensional (3D) images were acquired via a commercially available stereophotogrammetric camera capture system. The 3dMDface System photographed 186 subjects from two population groups (Egypt and Houston). All of the participants from both population groups were between 18 and 30 years of age and had no apparent facial anomalies. All facial images were overlaid and superimposed, and a complex mathematical algorithm was performed to generate a composite facial average (one male and one female) for each subgroup (EGY-M: Egyptian male subjects; EGY-F: Egyptian female subjects; HOU-M: Houstonian male subjects; and HOU-F: Houstonian female subjects). The computer-generated facial averages were superimposed based on a previously validated superimposition method, and the facial differences were evaluated and quantified. RESULTS Distinct facial differences were evident between the subgroups evaluated, involving various regions of the face including the slant of the forehead, and the nasal, malar, and labial regions. Overall, the mean facial differences between the Egyptian and Houstonian female subjects were 1.33 +/- 0.93 mm, while the differences in Egyptian and Houstonian male subjects were 2.32 +/- 2.23 mm. The range of differences for the female population pairings and the male population pairings were 14.34 mm and 13.71 mm, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The average adult Egyptian and white Houstonian face possess distinct differences. Different populations and ethnicities have different facial features and averages.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Prenatal Binder profile is a well known clinical phenotype, defined by a flat profile without nasal eminence, contrasting with nasal bones of normal length. Binder profile results of a hypoplasia of the nasal pyramid (sometimes referred to as maxillonasal dysplasia). We report 8 fetuses prenatally diagnosed as Binder phenotype, and discuss their postnatal diagnoses. METHODS Ultrasonographic detailed measurements in 2D and 3D were done on the 8 fetuses with Binder profile, and were compared with postnatal phenotype. RESULTS All fetuses have an association of verticalized nasal bones, abnormal convexity of the maxilla, and some degree of chondrodysplasia punctata. The final diagnoses included fetal warfarin syndrome (one patient), infantile sialic acid storage (one patient), probable Keutel syndrome (one patient), and five unclassifiable types of chondrodysplasia punctata. CONCLUSION This series demonstrates the heterogeneity of prenatally diagnosed Binder phenotype, and the presence of chondrodysplasia punctata in all cases. An anomaly of vitamin K metabolism, possibly due to environmental factors, is suspected in these mild chondrodysplasia punctata. We recommend considering early prophylactic vitamin K supplementation in every suspected acquired vitamin K deficiency including incoercible vomiting of the pregnancy.

Abstract
Binder syndrome or maxillo-nasal dysplasia (nasomaxillary hypoplasia) is an uncommon developmental anomaly affecting primarily the anterior part of the maxilla and nasal complex. A 4-year-old boy with maxillo-nasal dysplasia (Binder's syndrome), featuring maxillary hypoplasia and relative mandibular prognathism, combined with acute leucosis was presented. We review the literature and describe how three-dimensional CT scanning was used to evaluate the facial morphology. The principal features, diagnosis and management of the syndrome are discussed.
