Facilely Modified Nickel-Based Hole Transporting Layers for Organic Solar Cells with 19.12% Efficiency and Enhanced Stability

Hole transporting layers (HTLs), strategically positioned between electrode and light absorber, play a pivotal role in shaping charge extraction and transport in organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the commonly used poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) HTL, with its hygroscopic and acidic nature, undermines the operational durability of OSC devices. Herein, an environmentally friendly approach is developed utilizing nickel acetate tetrahydrate (NiAc·4H2O) and [2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)ethyl] phosphonic acid (2PACz) as the NiAc·4H2O/2PACz HTL, aiming at overcoming the limitations posed by the conventional PEDOT:PSS one. Encouragingly, a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.12% is obtained for the OSCs employing NiAc·4H2O/2PACz as the HTL, surpassing that of devices with the PEDOT:PSS HTL (17.59%), which is ranked among the highest ones of OSCs. This improvement is attributed to the appropriate work function, enhanced hole mobility, facilitated exciton dissociation efficiency, and lower recombination loss of NiAc·4H2O/2PACz-based devices. Furthermore, the NiAc·4H2O/2PACz-based OSCs exhibit superior operational stability compared to their PEDOT:PSS-based counterparts. Of significant note, the NiAc·4H2O/2PACz HTL demonstrates a broad generality, boosting the PCE of the PM6:PY-IT and PM6:Y6-based OSCs from 16.47% and 16.79% (with PEDOT:PSS-based analogs as HTLs) to 17.36% and 17.57%, respectively. These findings underscore the substantial potential of the NiAc·4H2O/2PACz HTL in advancing OSCs, offering improved performance and stability, thereby opening avenue for highly efficient and reliable solar energy harvesting technologies.

Recent progress and prospects of dimer and multimer acceptors for efficient and stable polymer solar cells

High power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long-term stability are essential prerequisites for the commercialization of polymer solar cells (PSCs). Small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) are core materials that have led to recent, rapid increases in the PCEs of the PSCs. However, a critical limitation of the resulting PSCs is their poor long-term stability. Blend morphology degradation from rapid diffusion of SMAs with low glass transition temperatures (Tgs) is considered the main cause of the poor long-term stability of the PSCs. The recent emergence of oligomerized SMAs (OSMAs), composed of two or more repeating SMA units (i.e., dimerized and trimerized SMAs), has shown great promise in overcoming these challenges. This innovation in material design has enabled OSMA-based PSCs to reach impressive PCEs near 19% and exceptional long-term stability. In this review, we summarize the evolution of OSMAs, including their research background and recent progress in molecular design. In particular, we discuss the mechanisms for high PCE and stability of OSMA-based PSCs and suggest useful design guidelines for high-performance OSMAs. Furthermore, we reflect on the existing hurdles and future directions for OSMA materials towards achieving commercially viable PSCs with high PCEs and operational stabilities.

Isomerized Green Solid Additive Engineering for Thermally Stable and Eco-Friendly All-Polymer Solar Cells with Approaching 19% Efficiency

Laboratory-scale all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) have exhibited remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) exceeding 19%. However, the utilization of hazardous solvents and nonvolatile liquid additives poses challenges for eco-friendly commercialization, resulting in the trade-off between device efficiency and operation stability. Herein, an innovative approach based on isomerized solid additive engineering is proposed, employing volatile dithienothiophene (DTT) isomers to modulate intermolecular interactions and facilitate molecular stacking within the photoactive layers. Through elucidating the underlying principles of the DTT-induced polymer assembly on molecular level, a PCE of 18.72% is achieved for devices processed with environmentally benign solvents, ranking it among the highest record values for eco-friendly all-PSCs. Significantly, such superiorities of the DTT-isomerized strategy afford excellent compatibility with large-area blade-coating techniques, offering a promising pathway for industrial-scale manufacturing of all-PSCs. Moreover, these devices demonstrate enhanced thermal stability with a promising extrapolated T80 lifetime of 14 000 h, further bolstering their potential for sustainable technological advancement.

Fibular Fixation in Same-Level Distal Third Tibiofibular Fractures: Is Fibular Fracture Regarded as a Secondary Importance?

Background

Although most studies focused on the alignment or union of the tibia in same-level distal third tibiofibular fractures, the outcome of a concomitant fibular fracture is generally regarded as being of secondary importance in the literature. This study aimed to assess the outcomes of fibular fractures in same-level distal third tibiofibular fractures.

Methods

In this retrospective study, we enrolled 111 patients with same-level distal third tibiofibular fractures treated at our institute between January 2016 and August 2020. Tibial fractures were stabilized with intramedullary nailing, and the cases were divided into two groups based on whether they additionally underwent fibular fixation (group 1, 57 cases) or not (group 2, 54 cases). Clinical and radiographic outcomes were used for the evaluation of tibial and fibular alignments, union of the tibia and fibula, number of interlocking screws in the distal tibial fragment, range of motion of the ankle joint, and complications.

Results

No statistically significant differences in the tibial union rate or mean tibial alignment were observed between the two groups on either the immediate postoperative or final radiographs. The fibular union rate in group 1 was significantly higher than that in group 2 (fibular nonunion, 0 vs. 15; p < 0.001). Statistically significant differences in fibular displacement were observed on immediate postoperative radiographs between patients with fibular union and those without it. At the final follow-up, the mean range of ankle motion and lower extremity functional scale scores did not differ between the two groups.

Conclusions

Regardless of whether fibular fixation was performed, the overall tibial alignment with intramedullary nailing was well restored and the union rate of the tibia was comparable in the two groups. Fibular nonunion is not uncommon in unfixed fibula fractures. Displacement of the fibula as seen on immediate postoperative radiographs was related to fibular nonunion.

Long-term effects of lateral nasal wall anchored facemasks compared with tooth-borne facemasks

INTRODUCTION

This study investigated the long-term effect and stability of skeletally anchored facemasks (SAFMs) with lateral nasal wall anchorage compared with conventional tooth-borne facemasks (TBFMs) in growing patients with a Class III relationship.

METHODS

A total of 180 subjects treated with SAFMs (n = 66) and TBFMs (n = 114) were screened. Thirty-four subjects were qualified and grouped into the SAFM group (n = 17) and TBFM group (n = 17). Lateral cephalograms were taken at the initial observation, after the protraction, and at the final observation.

RESULTS

Greater advancement of the maxilla was attained with SAFM than with TBFM after protraction (initial observation - after the protraction) (P <0.05). In particular, advancement of the midfacial area (SN-Or) was prominent and maintained after the postpubertal stage (P <0.05). The intermaxillary relationship was also improved (ANB, AB-MP) (P <0.05), and greater counterclockwise rotation of the palatal plane (FH-PP) was observed in the SAFM group compared with the TBFM group (P <0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Compared with TBFM, the orthopedic effects of SAFM were greater in the midfacial area. The palatal plane had a greater counterclockwise rotation in the SAFM group than in the TBFM group. Maxilla (SN-Or), intermaxillary relationship (APDI), and palatal plane angle (FH-PP) demonstrated a significant difference between the 2 groups after the postpubertal stage.

LPA1-mediated inhibition of CXCR4 attenuates CXCL12-induced signaling and cell migration

BACKGROUND

G protein-coupled receptor heteromerization is believed to exert dynamic regulatory impact on signal transduction. CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) and its ligand CXCL12, both of which are overexpressed in many cancers, play a pivotal role in metastasis. Likewise, lysophosphatidic acid receptor 1 (LPA1) is implicated in cancer cell proliferation and migration. In our preliminary study, we identified LPA1 as a prospective CXCR4 interactor. In the present study, we investigated in detail the formation of the CXCR4-LPA1 heteromer and characterized the unique molecular features and function of this heteromer.

METHODS

We employed bimolecular fluorescence complementation, bioluminescence resonance energy transfer, and proximity ligation assays to demonstrate heteromerization between CXCR4 and LPA1. To elucidate the distinctive molecular characteristics and functional implications of the CXCR4-LPA1 heteromer, we performed various assays, including cAMP, BRET for G protein activation, β-arrestin recruitment, ligand binding, and transwell migration assays.

RESULTS

We observed that CXCR4 forms heteromers with LPA1 in recombinant HEK293A cells and the human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231. Coexpression of LPA1 with CXCR4 reduced CXCL12-mediated cAMP inhibition, ERK activation, Gαi/o activation, and β-arrestin recruitment, while CXCL12 binding to CXCR4 remained unaffected. In contrast, CXCR4 had no impact on LPA1-mediated signaling. The addition of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) further hindered CXCL12-induced Gαi/o recruitment to CXCR4. LPA or alkyl-OMPT inhibited CXCL12-induced migration in various cancer cells that endogenously express both CXCR4 and LPA1. Conversely, CXCL12-induced calcium signaling and migration were increased in LPAR1 knockout cells, and LPA1-selective antagonists enhanced CXCL12-induced Gαi/o signaling and cell migration in the parental MDA-MB-231 cells but not in LPA1-deficient cells. Ultimately, complete inhibition of cell migration toward CXCL12 and alkyl-OMPT was only achieved in the presence of both CXCR4 and LPA1 antagonists.

CONCLUSIONS

The presence and impact of CXCR4-LPA1 heteromers on CXCL12-induced signaling and cell migration have been evidenced across various cell lines. This discovery provides crucial insights into a valuable regulatory mechanism of CXCR4 through heteromerization. Moreover, our findings propose a therapeutic potential in combined CXCR4 and LPA1 inhibitors for cancer and inflammatory diseases associated with these receptors, simultaneously raising concerns about the use of LPA1 antagonists alone for such conditions. Effects of Recycled Polymer on Melt Viscosity and Crystallization Temperature of Polyester Elastomer Blends

As the world is paying attention to the seriousness of environmental pollution, the need for a resource circulation economy is emerging due to the development of eco-friendly industrial groups. In particular, the recycling of thermoplastic elastomers without cross-link has been highlighted in the plastics field, which has rapidly developed the industry. Growing interests have been directed towards the advancement of thermoplastic polyether-ester elastomer (TPEE) as a material suitable for the circular economy owing to its remarkable recyclability, both in terms of mechanical and chemical processes. Due to its excellent processability, simple mechanical recycling is easy, which is a driving force towards achieving price competitiveness in the process. In molding TPEE resin, it is essential to check the thermal properties of the resin itself because the thermal properties, including the melting and crystallization temperatures of the resin, depend on the design of the polymer. In this study, the thermal and mechanical performances of TPEE blends were evaluated by manufacturing compounds by changing the amount of recycled resin and additives. When the recycled resin was added, the melt flow index (MFI) changed rapidly as the temperature of the melt flow index measurement increased. Rapid changes in MFI make the fiber spinning process uncontrollable and must be controlled by optimizing the addition of compatibilizers. Based on the thermal property results, compatibilizers such as Lotader and Elvaloy series exhibited minimal change in glass transition temperature, even with greater amounts added. This makes them well-suited as compatibilizers for fiber spinning.

Risk factors associated with late hepatocellular carcinoma detection in patients undergoing regular surveillance

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a very poor prognosis with a 5-year survival rate of < 20%; hence, early diagnosis is crucial. Despite regular checkups for high-risk groups of HCC, there are a few cases in which it is discovered as a late-stage HCC. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the characteristics of patients with delayed HCC detection during regular surveillance. Between January 2010 and December 2020, we analyzed patients with newly diagnosed HCCs who underwent HCC surveillance by ultrasound or computed tomography scan at least twice and were followed up for more than 1 year for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and chronic liver disease. The mean age of 223 HCC patients was 70 years, of which 152 were male, accounting for 68.1%. Among them, 196 patients (87%) were diagnosed with Barcelona clinic liver cancer stage 0 or A, while 27 (13%) were diagnosed with Barcelona clinic liver cancer stages B and C. When classified according to the TNM criteria, 154 patients (69%) were in stage I, and 69 (31%) were in stage II or higher. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify the risk factors for patients diagnosed with late-stage HCC. The Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) score was identified as a highly significant factor (P = .002, HR 1.547, 95% CI 1.177-2.032), whereas the presence of cirrhosis, body mass index, and sex had no significant effect. We found that in patients with chronic liver disease who were screened regularly, those with higher CTP scores were more likely to be diagnosed with HCC in the late-stages. Therefore, although the presence of cirrhosis is also important for HCC surveillance, careful attention is needed in patients with high CTP scores.

SOX17-mediated LPAR4 expression plays a pivotal role in cardiac development and regeneration after myocardial infarction

Lysophosphatidic acid receptor 4 (LPAR4) exhibits transient expression at the cardiac progenitor stage during pluripotent stem cell (PSC)-derived cardiac differentiation. Using RNA sequencing, promoter analyses, and a loss-of-function study in human PSCs, we discovered that SRY-box transcription factor 17 (SOX17) is an essential upstream factor of LPAR4 during cardiac differentiation. We conducted mouse embryo analyses to further verify our human PSC in vitro findings and confirmed the transient and sequential expression of SOX17 and LPAR4 during in vivo cardiac development. In an adult bone marrow transplantation model using LPAR4 promoter-driven GFP cells, we observed two LPAR4⁺ cell types in the heart following myocardial infarction (MI). Cardiac differentiation potential was shown in heart-resident LPAR4⁺ cells, which are SOX17⁺, but not bone marrow-derived infiltrated LPAR4⁺ cells. Furthermore, we tested various strategies to enhance cardiac repair through the regulation of downstream signals of LPAR4. During the early stages following MI, the downstream inhibition of LPAR4 by a p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) blocker improved cardiac function and reduced fibrotic scarring compared to that observed following LPAR4 stimulation. These findings improve our understanding of heart development and suggest novel therapeutic strategies that enhance repair and regeneration after injury by modulating LPAR4 signaling.

Observation of high-energy neutrinos from the Galactic plane

The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, is unknown. Because of deflection by interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays produced within the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, cosmic rays interact with matter near their sources and during propagation, which produces high-energy neutrinos. We searched for neutrino emission using machine learning techniques applied to 10 years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By comparing diffuse emission models to a background-only hypothesis, we identified neutrino emission from the Galactic plane at the 4.5σ level of significance. The signal is consistent with diffuse emission of neutrinos from the Milky Way but could also arise from a population of unresolved point sources.

Skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of different types of microimplant-assisted rapid palatal expansion

Objective

To evaluate the following null hypothesis: the skeletal and dentoalveolar expansion patterns in the coronal and axial planes are not different with two different types of microimplant-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) systems.

Methods

Pretreatment (T0) and post-MARPE (T1) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 32 patients (14 males and 18 females; mean age, 19.37) were analyzed. We compared two different MARPE systems. One MARPE system included the maxillary first premolars, maxillary first molars, and four microimplants as anchors (U46 type, n = 16), while the other included only the maxillary first molars and microimplants as anchors (U6 type, n = 16).

Results

In the molar region of the U6 and U46 groups, the transverse expansion at the midnasal, basal, alveolar, and dental levels was 2.64, 3.52, 4.46, and 6.32 mm and 2.17, 2.56, 2.73, and 5.71 mm, respectively. A significant difference was observed in the posterior alveolar-level expansion (p = 0.036) and posterior basal-bone-level expansion (p = 0.043) between the groups, with greater posterior skeletal and alveolar expansion in the U6 group.

Conclusions

Compared with the U46 group, the U6 group showed greater posterior expansion at the alveolar and basal-bone levels, with an almost parallel split. Both groups showed a pyramidal expansion pattern in the coronal view.

Poly(dimethylsiloxane)-block-PM6 Polymer Donors for High-Performance and Mechanically Robust Polymer Solar Cells

High power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stretchability are the dual requirements for the wearable application of polymer solar cells (PSCs). However, most efficient photoactive films are mechanically brittle. In this work, highly efficient (PCE = 18%) and mechanically robust (crack-onset strain (COS) = 18%) PSCs are acheived by designing block copolymer (BCP) donors, PM6-b-PDMSx (x = 5k, 12k, and 19k). In these BCP donors, stretchable poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) blocks are covalently linked with the PM6 blocks to effectively increase the stretchability. The stretchability of the BCP donors increases with a longer PDMS block, and PM6-b-PDMS_19k :L8-BO PSC exhibits a high PCE (18%) and 9-times higher COS value (18%) compared to that (COS = 2%) of the PM6:L8-BO-based PSC. However, the PM6:L8-BO:PDMS_12k ternary blend shows inferior PCE (5%) and COS (1%) due to the macrophase separation between PDMS and active components. In the intrinsically stretchable PSC, the PM6-b-PDMS_19k :L8-BO blend exhibits significantly greater mechanical stability PCE_80% ((80% of the initial PCE) at 36% strain) than those of the PM6:L8-BO blend (PCE_80% at 12% strain) and the PM6:L8-BO:PDMS ternary blend (PCE_80% at 4% strain). This study suggests an effective design strategy of BCP P_D to achieve stretchable and efficient PSCs.

Recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma in noncirrhotic patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease versus hepatitis B infection

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

This study aimed to compare the long-term cumulative recurrence rates of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and prognosis after curative resection for HCC in noncirrhotic patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) versus hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

METHODS

We retrospectively analyzed the data of 791 patients without recurrence within 1 year after curative resection for HCC from January 2005 to December 2015. Of these, 63 and 728 were NAFLD and HBV patients without cirrhosis, respectively.

RESULTS

Recurrence of HCC was observed in 6 (9.5%) and 210 (28.8%) patients in the NAFLD and HBV groups, respectively, during median follow-ups of 69.9 and 85.2 months. Cumulative recurrence rates in the NAFLD group at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 years (3.6, 9.4, 12.4, 12.4 and 12.4%, respectively) were significantly lower than in the HBV group (1.7, 16.9, 27.2, 37.1 and 44.4%, respectively) ( P  = 0.008). Cumulative overall survival (OS) rates in the NAFLD group at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 years (98.2, 96.0, 84.0, 84.0 and 84.0 %, respectively) were significantly lower than in the HBV group (99.3, 98.4, 97.3, 95.7 and 93.6%, respectively) ( P  = 0.003). HBV infection, with or without fatty liver compared to NAFLD, were significant predictors for the recurrence of HCC ( P  < 0.05 for all) and OS ( P  < 0.05 for all), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Noncirrhotic NAFLD patients showed lower recurrence rates of HCC but poorer survival outcomes than noncirrhotic HBV patients with or without fatty liver. The recurrence risk of HCC remains even in noncirrhotic NAFLD patients.

Search for the Pair Production of Dark Particles X with K_{L}^{0}→XX, X→γγ

We present the first search for the pair production of dark particles X via K_{L}^{0}→XX with X decaying into two photons using the data collected by the KOTO experiment. No signal was observed in the mass range of 40-110  MeV/c^{2} and 210-240  MeV/c^{2}. This sets upper limits on the branching fractions as B(K_{L}^{0}→XX)<(1-4)×10^{-7} and B(K_{L}^{0}→XX)<(1-2)×10^{-6} at the 90% confidence level for the two mass regions, respectively.

Efficient and stable organic solar cells enabled by multicomponent photoactive layer based on one-pot polymerization

Degradation of the kinetically trapped bulk heterojunction film morphology in organic solar cells (OSCs) remains a grand challenge for their practical application. Herein, we demonstrate highly thermally stable OSCs using multicomponent photoactive layer synthesized via a facile one-pot polymerization, which show the advantages of low synthetic cost and simplified device fabrication. The OSCs based on multicomponent photoactive layer deliver a high power conversion efficiency of 11.8% and exhibit excellent device stability for over 1000 h (>80% of their initial efficiency retention), realizing a balance between device efficiency and operational lifetime for OSCs. In-depth opto-electrical and morphological properties characterizations revealed that the dominant PM6-b-L15 block polymers with backbone entanglement and the small fraction of PM6 and L15 polymers synergistically contribute to the frozen fine-tuned film morphology and maintain well-balanced charge transport under long-time operation. These findings pave the way towards the development of low-cost and long-term stable OSCs.

Simultaneous activation of CXC chemokine receptor 4 and histamine receptor H1 enhances calcium signaling and cancer cell migration

C-X-C chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) is widely overexpressed in various types of cancer and is involved in several cancer phenotypes including tumor growth, survival, and metastasis. The roles of histamine and histamine receptor H1 (HRH1) in cancer pathogenesis remain controversial. Here, we show that HRH1 is widely expressed in various cancer cell lines and cancer tissues and that coexpression of CXCR4 and HRH1 is associated with poor prognosis in breast cancer. Using bimolecular fluorescence complementation and bioluminescence resonance energy transfer donor saturation assays, we demonstrate that CXCR4 and HRH1 can assemble into a heteromeric complex. Simultaneous activation of CXCR4 and HRH1 synergistically increases calcium flux in MDA-MB-231 cells that endogenously express CXCR4 and HRH1 but not in cells deficient in CXCR4 or HRH1. Costimulation of CXCR4 and HRH1 also significantly enhances CXCL12-induced MDA-MB-231 cell migration, while histamine alone does not induce cell migration. Synergistic effects on calcium flux and cell migration are inhibited by the Gαi inhibitor pertussis toxin and the Gαq inhibitor YM254890, suggesting that the Gαi and Gαq pathways are involved in the synergy. Enhanced calcium signaling and cell migration are also observed in NCI-H23 and HeLa cells, which coexpress CXCR4 and HRH1. Taken together, our findings demonstrate an interplay between CXCR4 and HRH1, and suggest the possibility of the CXCR4-HRH1 heteromer as a potential therapeutic target for anticancer therapy.

Design of an IoT-based indoor tracking and condition monitoring system for the safe and transparent management of drums storing low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste

Regulatory agencies and civil society organizations concerned with radioactive waste management are demanding maximized safety management of radioactive-waste-containing drums using advanced technology for more efficient and safe management. In the present paper, we propose a sensor system that can track and monitor drums containing low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste using advanced technology based on the Internet of Things (IoT). The proposed system consists of drum nodes, pallet nodes, and gateways. A drum node and magnetic sensor installed on a drum can be used to remotely check whether the drum lid is open or closed, and the location of the drum can be tracked using a near-field communication reader and an infrared module installed on the pallet node. Considering that radioactive waste is stored for a long time period, the proposed sensors are designed for low power consumption. Moreover, a pilot test involving 48 drums and 12 pallets was conducted to verify the system prototype. Accordingly, from the results of the pilot test, drawbacks were noted and solutions were proposed to improve the system in future work. Implications: We designed a test bed by fabricating a sensor-system prototype and used it in a simulation experiment. The results of this study will be used as basic data for establishing safety measures for radioactive waste management in the future through computer simulation of radioactive waste anomalies in a digital-twin system.

Efficient and Nonhalogenated Solvent-Processed Organic Solar Cells Enabled by Conjugated Donor-Acceptor Block Copolymers Containing the Same Benzodithiophene Unit

Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on conjugated block copolymers (CBCs) have gained considerable attention owing to their simple one-pot solution process. However, their power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) require significant improvement. Furthermore, the majority of efficient CBC-based OSCs are processed using environmentally toxic halogenated solvents. Herein, we develop a new CBC (PBDB-T-b-PY5BDT) and demonstrate efficient and stable OSCs achieved by a halogen-free solution process. We design a (D₁-A₁)-b-(D₁-A₂)-type CBC (PBDB-T-b-PY5BDT) that shares the same benzodithiophene (BDT) units in donor and acceptor blocks. This alleviates unfavorable molecular interactions between the blocks at their interfaces. The PBDB-T-b-PY5BDT-based devices exhibit a high PCE (10.55%), and they show good mechanical, thermal, and storage stabilities. Importantly, we discuss the potential of our OSCs by preparing two different control systems: one based on a binary polymer blend (PBDB-T:PY5BDT) and another based on a conjugated random copolymer (CRC, PBDB-T-r-PY5BDT). We demonstrate that the photovoltaic performance, device stability, and mechanical robustness of the CBC-based OSCs exceed those of the binary all-polymer solar cells and CRC-based OSCs.

Intrinsically Stretchable, Highly Efficient Organic Solar Cells Enabled by Polymer Donors Featuring Hydrogen-Bonding Spacers

Intrinsically stretchable organic solar cells (IS-OSCs), consisting of all stretchable layers, are attracting significant attention as a future power source for wearable electronics. However, most of the efficient active layers for OSCs are mechanically brittle due to their rigid molecular structures designed for high electrical and optical properties. Here, a series of new polymer donors (P_D s, PhAmX) featuring phenyl amide (N¹ ,N³ -bis((5-bromothiophen-2-yl)methyl)isophthalamide, PhAm)-based flexible spacer (FS) inducing hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) interactions is developed. These P_D s enable IS-OSCs with a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.73% and excellent stretchability (PCE retention of >80% of the initial value at 32% strain), representing the best performances among the reported IS-OSCs to date. The incorporation of PhAm-based FS enhances the molecular ordering of P_D s as well as their interactions with a Y7 acceptor, enhancing the mechanical stretchability and electrical properties simultaneously. It is also found that in rigid OSCs, the PhAm5:Y7 blend achieves a much higher PCE of 17.5% compared to that of the reference PM6:Y7 blend. The impact of the PhAm-FS linker on the mechanical and photovoltaic properties of OSCs is thoroughly investigated.

Search for Unstable Sterile Neutrinos with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

We present a search for an unstable sterile neutrino by looking for a resonant signal in eight years of atmospheric ν_{μ} data collected from 2011 to 2019 at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Both the (stable) three-neutrino and the 3+1 sterile neutrino models are disfavored relative to the unstable sterile neutrino model, though with p values of 2.8% and 0.81%, respectively, we do not observe evidence for 3+1 neutrinos with neutrino decay. The best-fit parameters for the sterile neutrino with decay model from this study are Δm_{41}^{2}=6.7_{-2.5}^{+3.9}  eV^{2}, sin^{2}2θ_{24}=0.33_{-0.17}^{+0.20}, and g^{2}=2.5π±1.5π, where g is the decay-mediating coupling. The preferred regions of the 3+1+decay model from short-baseline oscillation searches are excluded at 90% C.L.

Association between small dense LDL levels and hepatic fibrosis in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

While patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) continue to increase worldwide, few hematological biomarkers are helpful. This study examined the potential of small dense low density lipoprotein (sdLDL) as a noninvasive biomarker for NAFLD and investigated the relevance of liver fibrosis. One hundred seventy two patients were enrolled: 121 NAFLD patients and 51 healthy controls. The lipoprotein profiles of NAFLD patients and controls were analyzed, and transient elastography (Fibroscan®) was performed to evaluate the degree of NAFLD. The liver biopsy results in some NAFLD patients were also analyzed. Age-gender matching was performed among the 172 patients, and a comparison with 46 NAFLD patients with the control group confirmed that the sdLDL (P < .001) is significantly higher in the NAFLD group. A liver fibrosis test performed on 121 NAFLD patients confirmed a positive correlation between the degree of hepatic fibrosis and the sdLDL/LDL ratio (R = 0.215, P = .017). The area under the curve of the sdLDL for the diagnosis of NAFLD was 0.734 (95% CI, 0.631-0.838), and the area under the curve of the sdLDL/LDL ratio was 0.730 (95% CI, 0.621-0.829). The sdLDL and NAFLD activity scores of the 11 NAFLD patients who underwent liver biopsy showed a positive correlation, but it was not statistically significant. The sdLDL was higher in NAFLD patients than in controls and showed a tendency to increase gradually with increasing degree of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis. In particular, the sdLDL/LDL ratio showed a significant correlation with the degree of hepatic fibrosis, and the sdLDL measurement could be useful in NAFLD patients.

Effects of Flexible Conjugation-Break Spacers of Non-Conjugated Polymer Acceptors on Photovoltaic and Mechanical Properties of All-Polymer Solar Cells

HIGHLIGHTS

A series of non-conjugated acceptor polymers with flexible conjugation-break spacers (FCBSs) of different lengths were synthesized. The effect of FCBSs length on solubility of the acceptor polymers, and their photovoltaic and mechanical properties in all-polymer solar cells were explored. This work provides useful guidelines for the design of semiconducting polymers by introducing FCBS with proper length, which can giantly improved properties that are not possible to be achieved by the state-of-the-art fully conjugated polymers.

ABSTRACT

All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) possess attractive merits including superior thermal stability and mechanical flexibility for large-area roll-to-roll processing. Introducing flexible conjugation-break spacers (FCBSs) into backbones of polymer donor (P_D) or polymer acceptor (P_A) has been demonstrated as an efficient approach to enhance both the photovoltaic (PV) and mechanical properties of the all-PSCs. However, length dependency of FCBS on certain all-PSC related properties has not been systematically explored. In this regard, we report a series of new non-conjugated P_As by incorporating FCBS with various lengths (2, 4, and 8 carbon atoms in thioalkyl segments). Unlike common studies on so-called side-chain engineering, where longer side chains would lead to better solubility of those resulting polymers, in this work, we observe that the solubilities and the resulting photovoltaic/mechanical properties are optimized by a proper FCBS length (i.e., C2) in P_A named PYTS-C2. Its all-PSC achieves a high efficiency of 11.37%, and excellent mechanical robustness with a crack onset strain of 12.39%, significantly superior to those of the other P_As. These results firstly demonstrate the effects of FCBS lengths on the PV performance and mechanical properties of the all-PSCs, providing an effective strategy to fine-tune the structures of P_As for highly efficient and mechanically robust PSCs. Material Design and Device Fabrication Strategies for Stretchable Organic Solar Cells

Recent advances in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) have greatly enhanced their commercial viability. Considering the technical standards (e.g., mechanical robustness) required for wearable electronics, which are promising application platforms for OSCs, the development of fully stretchable OSCs (f-SOSCs) should be accelerated. Here, a comprehensive overview of f-SOSCs, which are aimed to reliably operate under various forms of mechanical stress, including bending and multidirectional stretching, is provided. First, the mechanical requirements of f-SOSCs, in terms of tensile and cohesion/adhesion properties, are summarized along with the experimental methods to evaluate those properties. Second, essential studies to make each layer of f-SOSCs stretchable and efficient are discussed, emphasizing strategies to simultaneously enhance the photovoltaic and mechanical properties of the active layer, ranging from material design to fabrication control. Key improvements to the other components/layers (i.e., substrate, electrodes, and interlayers) are also covered. Lastly, considering that f-SOSC research is in its infancy, the current challenges and future prospects are explored.

Strong Constraints on Neutrino Nonstandard Interactions from TeV-Scale ν_{μ} Disappearance at IceCube

We report a search for nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI) using eight years of TeV-scale atmospheric muon neutrino data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. By reconstructing incident energies and zenith angles for atmospheric neutrino events, this analysis presents unified confidence intervals for the NSI parameter ε_{μτ}. The best-fit value is consistent with no NSI at a p value of 25.2%. With a 90% confidence interval of -0.0041≤ε_{μτ}≤0.0031 along the real axis and similar strength in the complex plane, this result is the strongest constraint on any NSI parameter from any oscillation channel to date.

Thermomechanical Behavior of Poly(3-hexylthiophene) Thin Films on the Water Surface

The thermomechanical behavior of a conjugated polymer (CP) in a thin film state has rarely been studied despite the importance of understanding the polymer morphologies and optimizing the thermal processes of organic semiconductors. Moreover, the seamless integration of multilayers without mechanical failures in CP-based electronic devices is crucial for determining their operational stability. Large differences in the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) between the multilayers can cause serious degradation of devices under thermal stress. In this study, we measure the intrinsic thermomechanical properties of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) thin films in a pseudo-freestanding state on the water surface. The as-cast P3HT thin films exhibited a large thermal shrinkage (-1001 ppm K^-1) during heating on the water surface. Morphological analyses revealed that the thermal shrinkage of the polymer films was caused by the rearrangement of the polymer chain networks accompanied by crystallization, thus indicating that preheating the polymer films is essential for estimating their intrinsic CTE values. Moreover, the rigidity of the substrate significantly influences the thermomechanical behavior of the polymer films. The polymer films that were preheated on the glass substrate showed nonlinear thermal expansion due to the substrate constraint inhibiting sufficient relaxation of the polymer chains. In comparison, a linear expansion behavior is observed after preheating the films on the water surface, exhibiting a consistent CTE value (185 ppm K^-1) regardless of the number of thermal strain measurements. Thus, this work provides a direct method for measuring in-plane CTE values and an in-depth understanding of the thermomechanical behaviors of CP thin films to design thermomechanically reliable organic semiconductors.

Cyano-Functionalized n-Type Polymer with High Electron Mobility for High-Performance Organic Electrochemical Transistors

n-Type organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs) with high electron mobility are scarce and highly challenging to develop. As a result, the figure-of-merit (µC*) of n-type organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) lags far behind the p-type analogs, restraining the development of OECT-based low-power complementary circuits and biosensors. Here, two n-type donor-acceptor (D-A) polymers based on fused bithiophene imide dimer f-BTI2 as the acceptor unit and thienylene-vinylene-thienylene (TVT) as the donor co-unit are reported. The cyanation of TVT enables polymer f-BTI2g-TVTCN with simultaneously enhanced ion-uptake ability, film structural order, and charge-transport property. As a result, it is able to obtain a high volumetric capacitance (C*) of 170 ± 22 F cm^-3 and a record OECT electron mobility (μ_e,OECT ) of 0.24 cm² V^-1 s^-1 for f-BTI2g-TVTCN, subsequently achieving a state-of-the-art µC* of 41.3 F cm^-1 V^-1 s^-1 and geometry-normalized transconductance (g_m,norm ) of 12.8 S cm^-1 in n-type accumulation-mode OECTs. In contrast, only a moderate µC* of 1.50 F cm^-1 V^-1 s^-1 is measured for the non-cyanated polymer f-BTI2g-TVT. These remarkable results demonstrate the great power of cyano functionalization of polymer semiconductors in developing n-type OMIECs with substantial electron mobility in aqueous environment for high-performance n-type OECTs.

Surgery versus radiofrequency ablation in patients with Child- Pugh class-A/single small (≤3 cm) hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND/AIMS

We compared the post-treatment overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) between patients with Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) class-A and single small (≤3 cm) hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated by surgical resection (SR) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA).

METHODS

We retrospectively analyzed 391 HCC patients with CTP class-A who underwent SR (n=232) or RFA (n=159) as first-line therapy for single small (≤3 cm) HCC. Survival was compared according to the tumor size (≤2 cm/2-3 cm) and the presence of cirrhosis. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPW) method was used to estimate the average causal effect of treatment.

RESULTS

The median follow-up period was 64.8 months (interquartile range, 0.1-162.6). After IPW, the estimated OS was similar in the SR and RFA groups (P=0.215), and even in patients with HCC of ≤2 cm (P=0.816) and without cirrhosis (P=0.195). The estimated RFS was better in the SR group than in the RFA groups (P=0.005), also in patients without cirrhosis (P<0.001), but not in those with HCC of ≤2 cm (P=0.234). The weighted Cox proportional hazards model with IPW provided adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for OS, and the RFS after RFA versus SR were 0.698 (0.396-1.232) (P=0.215) and 1.698 (1.777-2.448) (P=0.005), respectively.

CONCLUSION

SR was similar for OS compared to RFA, but was better for RFS in patients with CTP class-A and single small (≤3 cm) HCC. The RFS was determined by the presence or absence of cirrhosis. Hence, SR rather than RFA should be considered in patients without cirrhosis to prolong the RFS, although there is no OS difference.

Skin manifestations and clinical features of drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS): A retrospective multicenter study of 125 patients

BACKGROUND

Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) is a severe adverse drug reaction generally accompanied by skin manifestations as the first and most frequent symptoms. However, skin manifestations and associated clinical features of DRESS have not been fully explored and evaluated.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to describe the skin manifestations of DRESS in detail and analyze their association with demographic characteristics and extra-cutaneous clinical features.

METHODS

We conducted this retrospective study on patients with DRESS diagnosed between September 2009 and August 2021 at three medical institutes and validated using the RegiSCAR score. Data regarding demographics, skin manifestations, and clinical characteristics were retrieved through thorough chart reviews.

RESULTS

Among 182 potential cases of DRESS, the validated 125 cases were analyzed. A widespread rash extending over more than 50% of the body surface area was observed in 122 patients (97.6%) and typical facial edema was experienced by 67 patients (53.6%). Polymorphous maculopapules were the most common rash morphology (106, 84.8%): specifically, exfoliative (59, 47.2%), urticarial (57, 45.6%), and purpuric forms (39, 31.2%) were common. Mucosal involvement was observed in 41 patients (32.8%). Patients with carboxamide antiepileptics (carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine) experienced more edema (P = .014) and typical facial edema than those with allopurinol (P = .021). The RegiSCAR score was higher in patients with purpura (P < .01).

CONCLUSIONS

Skin manifestations of DRESS exhibit a wide range of skin lesions and can vary according to the culprit drugs. Early suspicion and prompt intervention are needed to improve prognosis.

A Multi-Center, Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Phase III Clinical Trial to Evaluate the Antiviral Activity and Safety of DA-2802 (Tenofovir Disoproxil Orotate) and Viread (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate) in Chronic Hepatitis B Patients

BACKGROUND

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF, Viread^®) had been used as a standard treatment option of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). This clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of DA-2802 (tenofovir disoproxil orotate) compared to TDF.

METHODS

The present study was a double blind randomized controlled trial. Patients with CHB were recruited from 25 hospitals in Korea and given DA-2802 at a dose of 319 mg once daily or Viread^® at a dose of 300 mg once daily for 48 weeks from March 2017 to January 2019. Change in hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA level at week 48 after dosing compared to baseline was the primary efficacy endpoint. Secondary efficacy endpoints were proportions of subjects with undetectable HBV DNA, those with normal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, and those with loss of hepatitis B envelop antigen (HBeAg), those with loss of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Adverse events (AEs) were also investigated.

RESULTS

A total of 122 patients (DA-2802 group: n = 61, Viread^® group: n = 61) were used as full analysis set for efficacy analysis. Mean age, proportion of males, laboratory results and virologic characteristics were not different between the two groups. The change in HBV DNA level at week 48 from baseline was -5.13 ± 1.40 in the DA-2802 group and -4.97 ± 1.40 log₁₀ copies/mL in the Viread^® group. The analysis of primary endpoint using the nonparametric analysis of covariance showed statistically significant results (P < 0.001), which confirmed non-inferiority of DA-2802 to Viread^® by a prespecified noninferiority margin of 1. The proportion of undetectable HBV DNA was 78.7% in the DA-2802 group and 75.4% in the Viread^® group (P = 0.698). The proportion of subjects who had normal ALT levels was 75.4% in the DA-2802 group and 73.3% in the Viread^® group (P = 0.795). The proportion of those with HBeAg loss was 8.1% in the DA-2802 group and 10.8% in the Viread^® group (P = 1.000). No subject showed HBsAg loss. The frequency of AEs during treatment was similar between the two groups. Most AEs were mild to moderate in severity.

CONCLUSION

DA-2802 is considered an effective and safe treatment for patients with CHB.

Search for Relativistic Magnetic Monopoles with Eight Years of IceCube Data

We present an all-sky 90% confidence level upper limit on the cosmic flux of relativistic magnetic monopoles using 2886 days of IceCube data. The analysis was optimized for monopole speeds between 0.750c and 0.995c, without any explicit restriction on the monopole mass. We constrain the flux of relativistic cosmic magnetic monopoles to a level below 2.0×10^{-19}  cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} over the majority of the targeted speed range. This result constitutes the most strict upper limit to date for magnetic monopoles with β≳0.8 and up to β∼0.995 and fills the gap between existing limits on the cosmic flux of nonrelativistic and ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles.

Polymer Acceptors with Flexible Spacers Afford Efficient and Mechanically Robust All-Polymer Solar Cells

High efficiency and mechanical robustness are both crucial for the practical applications of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) in stretchable and wearable electronics. In this regard, a series of new polymer acceptors (P_A s) is reported by incorporating a flexible conjugation-break spacer (FCBS) to achieve highly efficient and mechanically robust all-PSCs. Incorporation of FCBS affords the effective modulation of the crystallinity and pre-aggregation of the P_A s, and achieves the optimal blend morphology with polymer donor (P_D ), increasing both the photovoltaic and mechanical properties of all-PSCs. In particular, an all-PSC based on PYTS-0.3 P_A incorporated with 30% FCBS and PBDB-T P_D demonstrates a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.68% and excellent mechanical stretchability with a crack onset strain (COS) of 21.64% and toughness of 3.86 MJ m^-3 , which is significantly superior to those of devices with the P_A without the FCBS (PYTS-0.0, PCE = 13.01%, and toughness = 2.70 MJ m^-3 ). To date, this COS is the highest value reported for PSCs with PCEs of over 8% without any insulating additives. These results reveal that the introduction of FCBS into the conjugated backbone is a highly feasible strategy to simultaneously improve the PCE and stretchability of PSCs.

Discovering cell–surface markers based on a comprehensive understanding of development is utilized to isolate a particular cell type with high purity for therapeutic purposes. Given that latrophilin-2 (Lphn2) substantially contributes to cardiac differentiation, we examined whether Lphn2 regulates functional significance in heart development and repair. We performed whole-mount immunostaining followed by clearing technique of embryo, RNA sequencing related to Lphn2-knockout (KO) embryo, and in vivo functional analyses of Lphn2+ cells using echocardiography. After immunostaining the cleared embryo sample, Lphn2 was exclusively observed in cardiac cells expressing α-sarcomeric actinin at embryonic days E9.5 and E10.5. Homozygous Lphn2-KO mice were embryonically lethal and showed underdevelopment of the ventricular myocardium. However, Lphn2 was not required to develop vessels, including endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells. For the purpose of cardiac regeneration, we transplanted pluripotent stem cell (PSC)–derived Lphn2+ cells into the infarcted heart. PSC–derived Lphn2+ cells differentiated into cardiomyocytes and regenerated the myocardium when transplanted into the infarcted heart, unlike Lphn2− cells. Transplanted Lphn2+ cells improved left-ventricle systolic function and reduced infarct size. We demonstrated that Lphn2 exhibits potential as a cardiomyogenic marker to facilitate targeted stem cell therapy for heart repair in clinical practice.

Donor-Acceptor Alternating Copolymer Compatibilizers for Thermally Stable, Mechanically Robust, and High-Performance Organic Solar Cells

Small-molecule acceptor (SMA)-based organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), while their long-term stabilities remain to be improved to meet the requirements for real applications. Herein, we demonstrate the use of donor-acceptor alternating copolymer-type compatibilizers (DACCs) in high-performance SMA-based OSCs, enhancing their PCE, thermal stability, and mechanical robustness simultaneously. Detailed experimental and computational studies reveal that the addition of DACCs to polymer donor (P_D)-SMA blends effectively reduces P_D-SMA interfacial tensions and stabilizes the interfaces, preventing the coalescence of the phase-separated domains. As a result, desired morphologies with exceptional thermal stability and mechanical robustness are obtained for the P_D-SMA blends. The addition of 20 wt % DACCs affords OSCs with a PCE of 17.1% and a cohesive fracture energy (G_c) of 0.89 J m^-2, higher than those (PCE = 13.6% and G_c = 0.35 J m^-2) for the control OSCs without DACCs. Moreover, at an elevated temperature of 120 °C, the OSCs with 20 wt % DACC exhibit excellent morphological stability, retaining over 95% of the initial PCE after 300 h. In contrast, the control OSCs without the DACC rapidly degraded to below 60% of the initial PCE after 144 h.

Effects of hydrogenated fat-spray-coated β-carotene supplement on plasma β-carotene concentration and conception rate after embryo transfer in Hanwoo beef cows

We hypothesised that hydrogenated fat (HF)-spray-coated β-carotene (βC) supplement could be used to increase plasma βC concentration and conception rates after embryo transfer (ET) in Hanwoo beef cows. In Experiment 1, 12 multiparous Hanwoo cows were fed one of four experimental diets in a triplicate 4 × 4 Latin square design for a 28-day period. Treatments included no βC addition (control), HF-uncoated βC (HFuβC), HF-spray-coated βC (HFβC), and HF-spray-coated βC and vitamin A (HFβCA). The cows under βC-supplemented treatments were fed 400 mg/day of βC, and a daily intake for vitamin A of HFβCA treatment was 30 000 IU/day as retinyl acetate. Blood was collected on days 0, 26, 27, and 28 to analyse βC and other metabolite concentrations. In Experiment 2, 199 Hanwoo cows with low fertility were randomly assigned to either control (n = 99) or HFβC treatments (n = 100) based on the results of Experiment 1. The oestrus of the cows was synchronised for ET. The HFβC group was fed from 4 weeks before to 4 weeks after ET with a daily intake of 400 mg βC. Pregnancy for conception rates was diagnosed on day 60 after ET, and blood was collected for βC concentrations on the day before ET. Supplementing βC resulted in a high plasma βC concentration (P < 0.001). Supplementing HFβC or HFβCA resulted in higher βC concentrations than HFuβC (P < 0.001); however, there was no difference between HFβC and HFβCA groups. Plasma retinol concentration was lower in the HFβCA treatment than in the control and HFβC groups (P < 0.05). Blood metabolites were unaffected by the treatments. The retinol:βC ratio was lower in the βC-supplemented treatments than in the controls, and was lower in HFβC and HFβCA than in HFuβC groups (P < 0.001). Plasma βC concentration was positively correlated with plasma high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and total cholesterol (P < 0.05). Plasma retinol concentration was negatively associated with plasma protein (P < 0.01), but positively associated with plasma creatinine (P < 0.001) and urea (P < 0.01). Supplementing HFβC to low-fertility cows resulted in higher plasma βC concentration (P < 0.001) and conception rates (P = 0.024) than those in the controls. In conclusion, HFβC had a better bioavailability than HFuβC, and an increase in conception rates by supplementing HFβC may be beneficial for producing more calves given the low pregnancy rates of bovine ET in Korea.

The best predictive model for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with chronic hepatitis B infection

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) seriously threatens human health. About 820,000 deaths annually are due to related complications such as hepatitis B and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Recently, the use of oral antiviral agents has significantly improved the prognosis of patients with CHB infection and reduced the risk of HCC. However, hepatitis B virus still remains a major factor in the development of HCC, raising many concerns. Therefore, numerous studies have been conducted to assess the risk of HCC in patients with CHB infection and many models have been proposed to predict the risk of developing HCC. However, as each study has different models for predicting HCC development that can be applied depending on the use of antiviral agents or the type of antiviral agents, it is necessary to properly understand characteristics of each model when using it for the evaluation of HCC in patients with CHB infection. In addition, because different variables such as host factor, viral activity, and cirrhosis are used to evaluate the risk of HCC development, it is necessary to assess the risk by carefully verifying which variables are used. Recently, studies have also evaluated the risk of HCC using risk prediction models through transient elastography and artificial intelligence (AI) system. These HCC risk predication models are also noteworthy. In this review, we aimed to compare HCC risk prediction models in patients with CHB infection reported to date to confirm variables used and specificity between each model to determine an appropriate HCC risk prediction method.

Resection or ablation versus transarterial therapy for Child-Pugh A patients with a single small hepatocellular carcinoma

Data from a direct comparison of the long-term survival outcomes of surgical resection (SR) or radiofrequency ablation (RFA) versus transarterial therapy in Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP)-class A patients with a single small T1/T2 stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (≤3 cm) are still lacking. This study retrospectively compared the therapeutic outcomes of these treatment types for CTP-A patients with a single small HCC.Using a nationwide Korean registry, we identified 2314 CTP-A patients with SR (n = 722), RFA (n = 731), or transarterial therapy (n = 861) for a single (≤3 cm) T1/T2 stage HCC from 2008 to 2014. The posttreatment overall survival (OS) of transarterial therapy with either SR or RFA were compared using the Inverse Probability of treatment Weighting (IPW). The median follow-up period was 50 months (range 1-107 months).After IPW, the cumulative OS rates after SR or RFA were significantly higher than those after transarterial therapy in all subjects (all P values < .05). The OS rates after SR or RFA were better than those after transarterial therapy in patients with the hepatitis B or C virus (all P values < .05), and in patients aged <65 years (all P values < .05). The cumulative OSs between RFA and transarterial therapy were statistically comparable in patients with a 2 to 3 cm HCC and aged ≥65 years, respectively. For all subjects, the weighted Cox proportional hazards model using IPW provided the adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for the OS after SR versus transarterial therapy and after RFA versus transarterial therapy of 0.42 (0.30-0.60) (P < .001) and 0.78 (0.61-0.99) (P = .044), respectively.In CTP-A patients with a single (≤3 cm) T1/T2 HCC, SR or RFA provides a better OS than transarterial therapy, regardless of the HCC etiology (hepatitis B virus or hepatitis C virus), especially in patients with HCC of <2 cm and aged <65 years.

Solar background noise mitigation using the orbital angular momentum mode in vertical FSO downlink transmissions

Free-space optical communication (FSO) is used to provide network configuration flexibility. A network-flying platform-based vertical FSO connection can be employed to enhance mobile network coverage and capacity. Solar background noise can be a potential risk that disrupts the seamless connection in the vertical FSO downlink channel. In this paper, we propose signal transmission using an orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam. The OAM demodulation process can filter sunlight out of the optical receiver except for the signal corresponding to the azimuthal state. We experimentally verified that most of the solar background noise could be reduced. To verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme in a vertical FSO channel, we modeled a FSO vertical downlink with an OAM modulation/demodulation process.

Association between HBs Ag quantification and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients treated with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate or entecavir

This study evaluated the clinical implications of hepatitis B surface antigen quantification (qHBs Ag) in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients treated with entecavir (ETV) or tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and identified the association between qHBs Ag and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in these patients.Between January 2007 and December 2018, the qHBs Ag and clinical data of 183 CHB patients who initially received ETV (n = 45, 24.6%) or TDF (n = 138, 75.4%) were analyzed.The mean follow-up period of the 183 CHB patients was 45.3 months, of which 59 (32.2%) patients showed a reduction in qHBs Ag by >50% after 1 year of antiviral treatment (ETV or TDF). The HCC development (P = .179) or qHBs Ag reduction (P = .524) were similar in the ETV and TDF groups. Patients with a ≥50% decrease in qHBs Ag had a significantly lower incidence of HCC or decompensated cirrhosis complications (P = .005). Multivariate analysis showed that a >50% reduction of qHBs Ag (hazard ratio 0.085, P = .018) and the presence of cirrhosis (hazard ratio 3.32, P = .016) were independent factors predicting the development of HCC.Patients whose qHBs Ag value decreased >50% at 1 year after antiviral treatment for CHB showed a significant decrease in HCC or decompensated cirrhosis events. A reduction in qHBs Ag could be used as a predictive factor of HCC development or critical complications in CHB patients treated with TDF or ETV.

KAI1(CD82) is a key molecule to control angiogenesis and switch angiogenic milieu to quiescent state

BACKGROUND

Little is known about endogenous inhibitors of angiogenic growth factors. In this study, we identified a novel endogenous anti-angiogenic factor expressed in pericytes and clarified its underlying mechanism and clinical significance.

METHODS

Herein, we found Kai1 knockout mice showed significantly enhanced angiogenesis. Then, we investigated the anti-angiogenic roll of Kai1 in vitro and in vivo.

RESULTS

KAI1 was mainly expressed in pericytes rather than in endothelial cells. It localized at the membrane surface after palmitoylation by zDHHC4 enzyme and induced LIF through the Src/p53 pathway. LIF released from pericytes in turn suppressed angiogenic factors in endothelial cells as well as in pericytes themselves, leading to inhibition of angiogenesis. Interestingly, KAI1 had another mechanism to inhibit angiogenesis: It directly bound to VEGF and PDGF and inhibited activation of their receptors. In the two different in vivo cancer models, KAI1 supplementation significantly inhibited tumor angiogenesis and growth. A peptide derived from the large extracellular loop of KAI1 has been shown to have anti-angiogenic effects to block the progression of breast cancer and retinal neovascularization in vivo.

CONCLUSIONS

KAI1 from PC is a novel molecular regulator that counterbalances the effect of angiogenic factors.

Cyano-Functionalized Quinoxaline-Based Polymer Acceptors for All-Polymer Solar Cells and Organic Transistors

Quinoxaline (Qx) derivatives are promising building units for efficient photovoltaic polymers owing to their strong light absorption and high charge-transport abilities, but they have been used exclusively in the construction of polymer donors. Herein, for the first time, Qx-based polymer acceptors (P_A s) were developed by introducing electron-withdrawing cyano (CN) groups into the Qx moiety (QxCN). A series of QxCN-based P_A s, P(QxCN-T2), P(QxCN-TVT), and P(QxCN-T3), were synthesized by copolymerizing the QxCN unit with bithiophene, (E)-1,2-di(thiophene-2-yl)ethene, and terthiophene, respectively. All of the P_A s exhibited unipolar n-type characteristics with organic field-effect transistor (OFET) mobilities of around 10^-2  cm²  V^-1  s^-1 . In space-charge-limited current devices, P(QxCN-T2) and P(QxCN-TVT) exhibited electron mobilities greater than 1.0×10^-4  cm²  V^-1  s^-1 , due to the well-ordered structure with tight π-π stacking. When the P_A s were applied in all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs), the highest performance of 5.32 % was achieved in the P(QxCN-T2)-based device. These results demonstrate the significant potential of Qx-based P_A s for high-performance all-PSCs and OFETs.

Regioregular Narrow-Bandgap n-Type Polymers with High Electron Mobility Enabling Highly Efficient All-Polymer Solar Cells

Narrow-bandgap n-type polymers with high electron mobility are urgently demanded for the development of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). Here, two regioregular narrow-bandgap polymer acceptors, L15 and MBTI, with two electron-deficient segments are synthesized by copolymerizing two dibrominated fused-ring electron acceptors (FREA) with distannylated aromatic imide, respectively. Taking full advantage of the FREA and the imide, both polymer acceptors show narrow bandgap and high electron mobility. Benefiting from the more extended absorption, better backbone ordering, and higher electron mobility than those of its regiorandom analog, the L15-based all-PSC yields a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.2% when blended with the polymer donor PM6. More importantly, MBTI incorporating a benzothiophene-core FREA segment shows relatively higher frontier molecular orbital levels than L15, forming a cascade-like energy level alignment with L15 and PM6. Based on this, ternary all-PSCs are designed where MBTI is introduced as a guest into the PM6:L15 host system. Thanks to further optimal blend morphology and more balanced charge transport, the PCE is improved up to 16.2%, which is among the highest values for all-PSCs. The results demonstrate that combining an FREA and an aromatic imide to construct regioregular narrow-bandgap polymer acceptors provides an effective approach to fabricate highly efficient all-PSCs.

Mandibular skeletal posterior anatomic limit for molar distalization in patients with Class III malocclusion with different vertical facial patterns

Objective

The aim of this study was to compare the differences in mandibular posterior anatomic limit (MPAL) distances stratified by vertical patterns in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion by using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Methods

CBCT images of 48 patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion (mean age, 22.8 ± 3.1 years) categorized according to the vertical patterns (hypodivergent, normodivergent, and hyperdivergent; n = 16 per group) were analyzed. While parallel to the posterior occlusal line, the shortest linear distances from the distal root of the mandibular second molar to the inner cortex of the mandibular body were measured at depths of 4, 6, and 8 mm from the cementoenamel junction. MPAL distances were compared between the three groups, and their correlations were analyzed.

Results

The mean ages, sex distribution, asymmetry, and crowding in the three groups showed no significant differences. MPAL distance was significantly longer in male (3.8 ± 2.6 mm) than in female (1.8 ± 1.2 mm) at the 8-mm root level. At all root levels, MPAL distances were significantly different in the hypodivergent and hyperdivergent groups (p < 0.001) and between the normodivergent and hyperdivergent groups (p < 0.01). MPAL distances were the shortest in the hyperdivergent group. The mandibular plane angle highly correlated with MPAL distances at all root levels (p < 0.01).

Conclusions

MPAL distances were the shortest in patients with hyperdivergent patterns and showed a decreasing tendency as the mandibular plane angle increased. MPAL distances were significantly shorter (~3.16 mm) at the 8-mm root level.

Efficacy and Safety of Glecaprevir/Pibrentasvir in Korean Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C: A Pooled Analysis of Five Phase II/III Trials

Background/Aims

Glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (G/P) is the first pan-genotypic direct-acting antiviral combination therapy approved in Korea. An integrated analysis of five phase II and III trials was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of G/P in Korean patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.

Methods

The study analyzed pooled data on Korean patients with HCV infection enrolled in the ENDURANCE 1 and 2, SURVEYOR II part 4 and VOYAGE I and II trials, which evaluated the efficacy and safety of 8 or 12 weeks of G/P treatment. The patients were either treatment-naïve or had received sofosbuvir or interferon-based treatment. Efficacy was evaluated by assessing the rate of sustained virologic response at 12 weeks posttreatment (SVR12). Safety was evaluated by monitoring adverse events (AEs) and laboratory assessments.

Results

The analysis included 265 patients; 179 (67.5%) were HCV treatment-naïve, and most patients were either subgenotype 1B (48.7%) or 2A (44.5%). In the intention-to-treat population, 262 patients (98.9%) achieved SVR12. Three patients did not achieve SVR12 one had virologic failure and two had non-virologic failures. Most AEs were grade 1/2; eight patients (3.0%) experienced at least one grade ≥3 AE. No serious AEs related to G/P treatment were reported, and grade ≥3 hepatic laboratory abnormalities were rare (0.8%).

Conclusions

G/P therapy was highly efficacious and well tolerated in Korean patients with HCV infection, with most patients achieving SVR12. The safety profile was comparable to that observed in a pooled analysis of a global pan-genotypic population of patients with HCV infection who received G/P.

The SπRIT time projection chamber

The Superconducting Analyzer for MUlti-particles from RAdioIsotope (SAMURAI) Pion-Reconstruction and Ion-Tracker Time Projection Chamber (SπRIT TPC) was designed to enable measurements of heavy ion collisions with the SAMURAI spectrometer at the RIKEN radioactive isotope beam factory and provides constraints on the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter. The SπRIT TPC has a 50.5 cm drift length and an 86.4 × 134.4 cm² pad plane with 12 096 pads that are equipped with the generic electronics for TPCs. The SπRIT TPC allows for an excellent reconstruction of particles and provides isotopic resolution for pions and other light charged particles across a wide range of energy losses and momenta. The details of the SπRIT TPC are presented, along with discussion of the TPC performance based on cosmic rays and charged particles emitted in heavy ion collisions.
