Risk factors for asthma in patients with allergic rhinitis in eastern China

Utilization of Dietary Supplements in People with the Atopic Triad in Korea: A Cross-Sectional Study Using KNHANES (2018-2021)

Background and Objectives: Studies investigating the types of dietary supplements associated with the atopic triad using large-scale data remain limited. We assessed the prevalence of the atopic triad, the types of dietary supplements used, and their associations in Korean adults using a 4-year national survey data. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2018-2021). Adults aged ≥ 19 years were included. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize participants' overall characteristics and estimate the national prevalence of the atopic triad, defined as a diagnosis of asthma, allergic rhinitis, or atopic dermatitis. Logistic regression analyses were conducted using each atopic condition as a dependent variable, with the types of dietary supplements currently used as independent variables. Covariates included socioeconomic status, lifestyle factors, frailty, and diet. Dietary supplements were categorized as multivitamins/minerals, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin A/lutein, propolis, omega-3, probiotics, red ginseng, calcium, or iron. Results: A total of 18,182 adults were analyzed, representing an estimated 52.8 million adults (mean age: 47 years; 50% male). Of these, 21% reported a history of any atopic triad, and 61% were current supplement users. Logistic regression showed significantly higher odds of all three atopic conditions among users of propolis (asthma: OR 1.90, 95% CI 1.04-3.47; allergic rhinitis: OR 1.64, 95% CI 1.25-2.17; atopic dermatitis: OR 2.04, 95% CI: 1.18-3.52), and higher odds of allergic rhinitis among users of probiotics (OR 1.21, 95% CI 1.06-1.38) and vitamin D (OR 1.43, 95% CI 1.16-1.75). Conclusions: A positive association was found between propolis use and all three atopic conditions. Also, a positive association was found between probiotics or vitamin D use and allergic rhinitis. We did not find significant associations with the other supplements. Further research in establishing causal relationships between the dietary supplements and atopic conditions are needed.

The study of the role of purified anti-mouse CD193 (CCR3) antibody in allergic rhinitis mouse animal models

The pathogenesis of allergic asthma is similar to that of allergic rhinitis, with inflammation cells producing and releasing inflammatory mediators and cytokines closely related to CCR3.Based on the theory of "one airway, one disease", the use of CCR3 monoclonal antibody may have a similar effect on allergic rhinitis. However, there are few studies on CCR3 monoclonal antibody in allergic rhinitis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effective concentration of CCR3 monoclonal antibody, to compare the effects of different methods of administration, and to examine the lung condition of allergic mice to investigate whether antibody treatment protects the lungs. In this study, we constructed a mouse model of allergic rhinitis and intraperitoneally injected different doses of CCR3 monoclonal antibody (5, 10, and 20 uL/mg) to observe its therapeutic effect: observing changes in tissue morphology of nasal mucosa, infiltration of inflammation, and using ELISA to detect changes in relevant inflammatory mediators and cytokines, studying the role of CCR3 mAb in inhibiting CCR3-related actions on the nasal mucosa of allergic rhinitis mice. Furthermore, In addition, the therapeutic effects of intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) and intranasal administration (i.n.) were studied on the basis of effective concentrations.

[Relationship between atherogenic index of plasma and childhood asthma]

OBJECTIVES

To explore the relationship between atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and childhood asthma.

METHODS

This retrospective study included 86 children with asthma admitted to the Changzhou Second People's Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University from July 2020 to August 2022 as the asthma group and 149 healthy children undergoing physical examination during the same period as the control group. Metabolic parameters including total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and blood glucose, as well as general information of the children such as height, weight, body mass index, presence of specific dermatitis, history of inhalant allergen hypersensitivity, family history of asthma, and feeding history, were collected. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to study the relationship between AIP, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and asthma. The value of AIP, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol for predicting asthma was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

RESULTS

The AIP and triglyceride levels in the asthma group were significantly higher than those in the control group, while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was significantly lower (P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol between the two groups (P>0.05). Before and after adjusting for height, weight, presence of specific dermatitis, history of inhalant allergen hypersensitivity, family history of asthma, feeding method, and blood glucose, multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that AIP, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were associated with asthma (P<0.05). ROC curve analysis showed that the optimal cutoff value for predicting asthma with AIP was -0.333, with a sensitivity of 80.2%, specificity of 55.0%, positive predictive value of 50.71%, and negative predictive value of 82.85%. The area under the curve (AUC) for AIP in predicting asthma was significantly higher than that for triglycerides (P=0.009), but there was no significant difference in AUC between AIP and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P=0.686).

CONCLUSIONS

AIP, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol are all associated with asthma. AIP has a higher value for predicting asthma than triglycerides and comparable value to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
