Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between underlying type 2 inflammation and immune response to COVID-19 is unclear. OBJECTIVE To assess the relationships between allergic conditions and COVID-19 susceptibility and outcomes. METHODS In the Optum database, adult patients with and without major allergic conditions (asthma, atopic dermatitis [AD], allergic rhinitis, food allergy, anaphylaxis, or eosinophilic esophagitis) and patients with and without severe asthma/AD were identified. Adjusted incidence rate ratios for COVID-19 were compared among patients with vs without allergic conditions or severe asthma/AD vs non-severe asthma/AD during April 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020. Among patients with COVID-19, adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) of 30-day COVID-19-related hospitalization/all-cause mortality were estimated for the same comparisons during April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022. RESULTS Patients with (N = 1,273,231; asthma, 47.2%; AD, 1.5%; allergic rhinitis, 58.6%; food allergy, 5.1%; anaphylaxis, 4.1%; eosinophilic esophagitis, 0.9%) and without allergic conditions (N = 2,278,571) were identified. Allergic conditions (adjusted incidence rate ratios [95% CI], 1.22 [1.21-1.24]) and asthma severity (1.12 [1.09-1.15]) were associated with increased incidence of COVID-19. Among patients with COVID-19 (patients with [N = 261,076] and without allergic conditions [N = 1,098,135] were matched on age, sex, region, index month), having an allergic condition had minimal impact on 30-day COVID-19-related hospitalization/all-cause mortality (aHR [95% CI] 0.96 [0.95-0.98]) but was associated with a lower risk of mortality (0.80 [0.78-0.83]). Asthma was associated with a higher risk of COVID-19-related hospitalization/all-cause mortality vs non-asthma allergic conditions (aHR [95% CI], 1.27 [1.25-1.30]), mostly driven by higher hospitalization. CONCLUSION Allergic conditions were associated with an increased risk of receiving COVID-19 diagnosis but reduced mortality after infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The association between asthma and COVID-19 mortality remains inconclusive. We examined the association between asthma and clinical outcomes of patients with COVID-19. STUDY DESIGN A case-control study based on a surveillance cohort in Harris County, Texas. METHODS Using the data of 21,765 patients who reported having at least one chronic health condition, we investigated the association between asthma and COVID-19 severity, characterized primarily by hospitalization and death. Unconditional logistic regression models were used to estimate the multivariable odds ratio (mOR) and its 95 % confidence interval (CI) of COVID-19 severity associated with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, adjusting for demographic and other comorbidities. A P-value < 0.005 was considered statistically significant after correcting multiple testing. RESULTS In total, 3034 patients (13.9 %) had asthma, and 774 (3.56 %) had other chronic lung diseases. The case death rate among patients with asthma and other chronic lung diseases was 0.75 % and 19.0 %, respectively. Compared to patients without the respective conditions, patients with asthma had lower odds of death (mOR = 0.44, 95 % CI: 0.27-0.69), while patients with other chronic lung diseases had higher odds of hospitalization (mOR = 2.02, 95 % CI: 1.68-2.42) and death (mOR = 1.95, 95 % CI: 1.52-2.49) (P-values < 0.005). Risk factors for COVID-19 mortality included older age, male gender, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, active cancer, and chronic kidney disease. CONCLUSIONS The public health surveillance data suggested that preexisting asthma was inversely associated with COVID-19 mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There have been conflicting reports on the relationship between asthma and COVID-19 severity. This study aimed to compare the risk of death among children with asthma and healthy peers hospitalized due to COVID-19. METHODS We carried out an analysis of all pediatric patients 2-19 years of age with asthma and COVID-19 registered in Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System-Gripe, a Brazilian nationwide surveillance database, between February 2020 and March 2022. The primary outcome was time to death, which was evaluated considering discharge as a competitive risk using the cumulative incidence function. RESULTS Among 30,405 hospitalized children with COVID-19, 21,340 (70.2%) had no comorbidities, 6444 (21.2%) had comorbidities other than asthma, 2165 (7.1%) had asthma, and 465 (1.5%) had asthma with other comorbidities. The estimated probability of a fatal outcome for each group was 4.1%, 14.9%, 2.1%, and 10.7%, respectively. After adjustment, children with asthma had a 60% reduction in the hazard of death than healthy peers (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.39, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.29-0.53, p < 0.0001). Among children with asthma and no other comorbidities, two covariates were independently associated with in-hospital mortality, age ≥12 years, HR = 4.0, 95% CI, 2.5-6.4), and low oxygen saturation at admission (HR = 2.3, 95% CI, 1.4-3.2). CONCLUSION Children with asthma and no comorbidities had a lower risk of death compared with healthy peers after controlling for clinical and demographic confounding factors.

Pre-existing conditions associated with post-acute sequelae of COVID-19. J Autoimmun 2023; 135:102991. Abstract
Post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) are conditions that occur or remain at least 28 days after SARS-CoV-2 infection. While some risk factors for PASC have been identified, little is known about pre-existing conditions that render one susceptible to developing PASC. Data from participants (n = 1224) in a longitudinal COVID-19 cohort study in Arizona were used to investigate comorbid conditions associated with PASC. After adjustment of the models for age, BMI, gender, race, and smoking, the following pre-existing conditions were statistically significantly associated with the development of PASC: asthma (OR = 1.54; 95% CI = 1.10-2.15); chronic constipation (OR = 4.29; 95% CI = 1.15-16.00); reflux (OR = 1.54; 95% CI = 1.01-2.34); rheumatoid arthritis (OR = 3.69; 95%CI = 1.15-11.82); seasonal allergies (OR = 1.56; 95% CI = 1.22-1.98); and depression/anxiety (OR = 1.72; 95% CI = 1.17-2.52). When grouping conditions together, statistically significant associations with PASC were observed for respiratory (OR = 1.47; 95% CI = 1.06-2.14); gastrointestinal (OR = 1.62; 95% CI = 1.16-2.26), and autoimmune conditions (OR = 4.38; 95% CI = 1.59-12.06). After adjustment for severity of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection and depression/anxiety, seasonal allergies (OR = 1.48; 95% CI 1.15-1.91) and autoimmune disease (OR = 3.78; 95% CI - 1.31-10.91) remained significantly associated with risk for PASC. These findings indicate that numerous pre-existing conditions may be associated with an increased risk for the development of PASC. Patients with these conditions should consider taking extra steps to avoid infection.

Abstract
(1) Background: Viral respiratory infections are common triggers for asthma exacerbation, often leading patients to the emergency department (ED). COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, typically presents with respiratory symptoms, from minor symptoms, up to and including severe acute respiratory failure. Data on the association between asthma and COVID-19 are conflicting, and those from an ED setting are scarce. Our aims were to assess the prevalence and outcome of patients with asthma admitted to the ED for COVID-19. (2) Methods: We performed a case-control study, extracting data from a registry of adult patients with confirmed COVID-19 consecutively admitted to the ED of our hospital between March 2020 and January 2021. (3) Results: We identified 83 patients with asthma out of 935 individuals (prevalence 8.9%). There were no significant differences between cases and controls regarding both the proportion of hospital admissions and patients with critical COVID-19. (OR 1.37; 95% CI 0.52–3.56; and (OR 0.74; 95% CI 0.31–1.78 respectively). (4) Conclusions: In patients admitted to the ED for COVID-19, the prevalence of asthma was not higher than expected, and asthma was not associated with a worse outcome, in terms of the rate of hospitalization and critical COVID-19 disease.
