Abstract
BACKGROUND In horses, the mechanisms behind ovarian follicle growth and oocyte maturation remain largely unknown. In other species, oocyte-secreted factors growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9) and bone morphogenetic protein 15 (BMP15) have been related to the acquisition of developmental competence and to interaction with granulosa cells for the regulation of follicle development. This study assessed the expression and localization of GDF9 in the equine ovary, and its possible relationship with granulosa cell function. RESULTS Using custom-made antibodies, GDF9 protein was localized in oocytes from the primary follicle stage onwards. Together with BMP15, its intrafollicular concentration was higher in small antral follicles compared to larger ones (P < 0.05). Negative correlations were observed between intrafollicular BMP15 concentration and estradiol sulfate (E2S) (r = -0.36, P = 0.048), as well as between BMP15 and E2S/P4 ratio (r = -0.37, P = 0.046). In vivo, equine granulosa cells showed increasing mRNA expression of genes involved in steroidogenesis (STAR and HSD3B2) and cell proliferation (KI67) with increasing follicle size, while expression of GDF9 and of apoptosis-related genes (BCL2 and CASP3) were not affected by follicle size. Simultaneous stimulation of granulosa cells in vitro with IGF1 and cortisol significantly increased HSD3B2 and CYP19A1 transcriptional levels, as well as E2 concentration in culture media, while IGF1-induced P4 secretion was suppressed in the presence of cortisol. Blocking the stimulatory effect of IGF1 on E2, E2S and P4 by H89 was associated with increased GDF9 mRNA levels and reduced STAR, PCNA, KI67 and BCL2 mRNA expression. Significant negative correlations of GDF9 with STAR and PCNA mRNA, respectively, were seen in vivo and in vitro. CONCLUSIONS Together, our results show GDF9 localization and expression in the equine ovary and a temporal relationship with steroidogenesis and cell proliferation within the surrounding granulosa cells. Moreover, results of the in vitro study suggest a supporting role of cortisol during follicle maturation. Our study sheds light on possible mechanisms for the regulation of ovarian function in horses using GDF9.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abnormal or undesired mare behaviours are often assumed to be associated with ovarian abnormalities. OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine the incidence of abnormal behaviours and their association with concentrations of one or more ovarian hormones associated with a granulosa cell tumour (GCT). STUDY DESIGN Retrospective descriptive. METHODS A total of 2914 hormonal profile samples submitted with the words behave, behaviour, or behaving in the submission history were analysed. The association between reported abnormal behaviours and concentrations of testosterone, anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), inhibins and inhibin-B were assessed. Statistical analysis was performed using a Chi-squared test of association. RESULTS Of the 2914 cases that were submitted due to behaviour issues, 2506 (86%) did not have any of the measured hormones reach GCT-like concentrations. The remaining 408 cases had either one (63%), two (25.5%), or three (11.5%) hormones with concentrations consistent with those from confirmed GCT cases. Testosterone had the lowest percent of GCT-like values among the cases (7.7%), compared with AMH (9.4%), inhibins (9.6%) and inhibin B (8.7%). Stallion-like behaviour was significantly associated with increased concentrations of all four hormones. In contrast, aggression, oestrous and other abnormal behaviours were significantly less likely to be associated with increased concentrations of the hormones. MAIN LIMITATIONS Retrospective study, using sample submission history. CONCLUSION Overall, the abnormal behaviours among mares, except the stallion-like behaviour, were not associated with increased ovarian hormones. These results highlight the common misassumption about the involvement of the ovaries in 'abnormal behaviours' or 'undesirable behaviours' of mares.

Abstract
To increase the value of the by-products of the canned tuna industry, the memory enhancement effect and the possible mechanisms of omega-3-rich tuna oil in bilateral ovariectomized (OVX) rats were assessed. Female rats were orally given tuna oil at doses of 140, 200, and 250 mg/kg of body weight (BW) for 28 days before OVX and for 21 days continually after OVX. Memory performance was assessed every week, whereas the parameters regarding mechanisms of action were assessed at the end of the study. All doses of tuna oil enhanced memory, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities but decreased cortisol, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), malondialdehyde (MDA), and inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Medium and high doses of tuna oil suppressed monoamine oxidase (MAO) but increased eNOS activity. A high dose of tuna oil suppressed gamma-aminotransferase (GABA-T) but increased glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) and sirtuin-1. A medium dose of tuna oil decreased homocysteine (Hcys) and C-reactive protein. No change in telomere or estradiol was observed in this study. Our results suggest the memory-enhancing effect of tuna oil in an OVX rat model of menopause. The main mechanisms may involve a reduction in oxidative stress, inflammation, and neurotransmitter regulation.

Abstract
The behaviour of mares is often detrimental to their performance resulting in frequent demand for methods to suppress gonadal function. In addition, prevention of unintended reproduction especially in feral horse populations may require methods for suppression of gonadal function. Surgical ovariectomy is a safe method but not an acceptable approach in feral mares and undesired in mares where future breeding is considered. There are different approaches for artificial prolongation of the luteal phase resulting in transient inhibition of oestrus and ovulation. Among those, treatment with natural or synthetic progestogens is considered the most common and successful method. Whereas application of intrauterine devices may result in prolongation of luteal function in non-pregnant mares, intrauterine insertion of glass balls is no longer recommended because of complications in individual mares. There are several safer alternatives that may be of interest, especially for population control in free-roaming horses. Treatment with long-acting deslorelin implants inhibited ovulation and oestrus behaviour in mares for limited and variable time intervals in a dose-dependent manner. The effect of GnRH vaccines varies considerably among individual mares, is age dependent, and oestrus-like behaviour may still occur. Contraception via immunization against native porcine or recombinant zona pellucida antigen is successful, but immunocontraception is as much a result of ovarian inactivity as an antibody-based block to sperm-oocyte binding. In conclusion, several treatments for suppression of gonadal function in mares are available, but there are advantages and disadvantages associated that have to be considered. The treatment of choice will thus differ with regard to the demands.

Abstract
The evidence that androgens regulate the folliculogenesis supports the hypothesis that intrafollicular testosterone (T), androstenedione (A4) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) could be modified along follicular growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes and related relationships between systemic and intrafollicular T, A4 and DHEA in post-deviation and impending ovulation follicles. Sixty ovaries were taken after the slaughter of 30 clinically healthy mares. In according to the sizes, the follicles were classified in 3 different categories, as small (20-30 mm), medium (31-40 mm) and large (≥ 41 mm), and the follicular fluid (FF) samplings were extracted from each single follicle. Intrafollicular concentrations of T, A4, and DHEA were significantly higher than systemic ones. Intrafollicular and systemic T and A4 concentrations were strongly and positively correlated, and DHEA negatively. A4 was the predominant androgen in FF. T and A4 were positively and DHEA negatively correlated with the follicular diameter. T and A4 significantly increased in large and medium than small follicle sizes. DHEA was significantly higher in small than medium and large follicle size. The increase of intrafollicular androgens suggests the presence of androgenic environment based in the biotransformation of DHEA in A4 and later in T in the follicles, and the progressive oestradiol-17β (E2) production with the advance of follicular growth. The evidence of significant correlations between systemic and intrafollicular androgens considerably helps to understanding more deeply the role of these steroids in the physiology of follicular development in the mare, adding a new segment of scientific literature.

Abstract
A significant welfare concern for those within the horse industry is that of the overpopulation in free-roaming horses in the western US. The goal of the present study was to identify a humane and inexpensive means of providing contraception and reducing pregnancy rates in a way that could be applied to free-roaming horses on the western U.S. open range lands. A series of studies was conducted utilizing the previously-described silastic O-ring intrauterine devices (IUDs). Throughout these studies pregnancy was successfully prevented in mares with an O-ring IUD, but collective retention rates failed to exceed 50% regardless of size or durometer (material hardness/malleability). When the O-ring IUDs were compared to the recently-described Y-design IUDs (Holyoak et al., 2021) the Y-design IUDs had a markedly greater rate of retention; therefore, the Y-design IUDs would be most appropriate for potential use in free-roaming horses. Assessment of mare records revealed that the vast majority of mares continued to have ovulations and mating continued to occur while the IUDs were in place. A few mares had multiple small ovarian follicles when the IUD was in utero. Findings indicate that utilizing an IUD with the expectation of estrus suppression in mares would fail to be fruitful.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess outcomes and behavior changes associated with bilateral laparoscopic ovariectomies. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective study. SAMPLE POPULATION Fifty-one equids. METHODS Medical records were evaluated from equid bilateral laparoscopic ovariectomies from January 2012 to October 2018 with a potential of 6 months follow-up. Follow-up information obtained by telephone interviews included behavior before and after surgery. Likelihood ratio chi-square tests and odds ratios (OR) with 95% CI were calculated where applicable, with statistical significance at p < .05. RESULTS Bilateral ovariectomy was performed in 51 cases, with elective (no pathologic ovaries) ovariectomies performed in 41/51 cases. Occasional estrus-like behavior was observed postoperatively in 14/51 (27%) mares, but the behavior was mild and manageable in all cases. There was no age effect on outcome in all bilateral (p = .56) or elective only (p = .36) cases. In 37/41 (90%) elective cases, improvement was observed in the reason for presentation. Some response to altrenogest administration for behavior modification was observed preoperatively in 12/18 (67%) elective cases. Response to altrenogest was not associated with (p = .31) or able to predict a beneficial response to surgery (OR = 5.5; 95% CI = 0.38-78.57; p = .21). CONCLUSION Response to altrenogest in elective cases may not predict behavioral outcome with ovariectomy. Occasional estrus-like behavior in mares postoperatively was not problematic for any owners. Bilateral ovariectomy is a viable treatment option for owners seeking to alleviate undesirable behavior in mares. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study should aid veterinarians and horse owners in case selection for bilateral ovariectomy.

Abstract
Simple Summary The reproductive cycle of mares is associated with many hormonal changes, but the effects of this cycle and pregnancy on adrenocorticotropic hormone and insulin concentrations are poorly described, which could limit our ability to diagnose pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction and insulin dysregulation. In this study, healthy mares are followed through their reproductive cycle during the physiologic breeding season, and adrenocorticotropic hormone, cortisol, glucose and insulin concentrations are measured to determine the effects of age, pregnancy and the reproductive cycle on analyte concentrations. No significant effect of age, the reproductive cycle or pregnancy is detected on the cortisol, glucose or insulin concentrations; however, adrenocorticotropic hormone concentrations are significantly increased throughout the peri-ovulatory period and during pregnancy. Therefore, knowledge of a mare’s reproductive cycle might be beneficial when interpreting adrenocorticotropic hormone concentrations. Abstract Although there are many hormonal changes associated with reproduction, the effects of ovulation and early pregnancy on adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and insulin concentrations are poorly described. We hypothesise that both ovulation and early pregnancy will alter ACTH and insulin concentrations in healthy mares. Eighteen mares showing no clinical signs suggestive of, or laboratory findings consistent with, pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction PPID and insulin dysregulation (ID) are enrolled. ACTH, cortisol, insulin and glucose concentrations are measured over their peri-ovulatory period, as determined via ultrasounds and progesterone concentrations. The mares are grouped by age and gestation status, and a two-way repeated-measures ANOVA is used to determine the effects of age and early pregnancy, along with the peri-ovulatory period, on analyte concentrations. No significant effect of age, ovulation or early pregnancy is detected on the mares’ cortisol, insulin or glucose concentrations; however, there is a significant effect of early pregnancy and ovulation on ACTH concentrations (p = 0.04 and p = 0.04 respectively). ACTH concentrations change around ovulation and with early pregnancy. Therefore, knowledge of a mare’s reproductive status might be beneficial when interpreting ACTH concentrations.

Simple Summary This study provides new evidence on the physiological mechanisms involved in the electrolyte balance during periovulatory period in cycling mares. The interrelationships among adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol (CORT), aldosterone (ALD) and electrolytes (sodium—Na+, potassium—K+ and chloride—Cl−) were evaluated. The simultaneous increase in ACTH, CORT and ALD toward the time of ovulation could suggest the involvement of the adrenocortical pituitary axis in the ovulatory mechanisms, contributing at the same time to the maintenance of electrolyte homeostasis. Abstract In cycling females, the periovulatory period is characterized by stimulation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis. The aim of present study was to analyze the pattern and interrelationships among adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol (CORT), aldosterone (ALD) and electrolytes (sodium—Na+, potassium—K+ and chloride—Cl−) during periovulatory period in cycling mares. Venous blood samples were obtained daily from a total of 23 Purebred Spanish broodmares, aged 7.09 ± 2.5 years, from day −5 to day +5 of estrous cycle, considering day 0, the day of ovulation. Plasma ACTH was measured by a fluorescent immunoassay kit, serum CORT and ALD by means of a competitive ELISA immunoassay, and plasma Na+, K+ and Cl− were quantified by an analyzer with selective electrodes for the three ions. ACTH showed higher concentrations at day 0 compared to days −5 to −1 and +1 to +3 (p < 0.05). CORT showed higher concentrations at day 0 compared to days −5 to −2 and +1 to +5 (p < 0.05). ALD showed higher concentrations at day 0 compared to days −5 to −2 (p < 0.05) and +2 (p < 0.05). Na+ and Cl− showed higher concentrations at day 0, compared to day −5 and +5. K+ showed lower concentrations at day 0 compared to day +1 (p < 0.05). The significant correlations obtained between ACTH and CORT (r = 0.20) and between ACTH and ALD (r = 0.32) suggest that although ACTH may have an effect both on CORT and ALD, there are other very important determinants that could be considered. Hence, it is possible to presume that the pituitary adrenocortical response and ALD may be involved in the ovulatory mechanisms without a direct relation with electrolyte pattern.

Abstract
Behavior during the estrous cycle of mares can affect their performance and therefore inhibition of cyclical ovarian activity is indicated. We hypothesized that implants containing the GnRH analog deslorelin downregulate GnRH receptors and inhibit ovulation in mares. The estrous cycles of Shetland mares were synchronized with 2 injections of a PGF2α analog. One day after the second injection (day 0), mares received 9.4 (group D1, n = 6) and 4.7 mg deslorelin (D2, n = 5) as slow-release implants or 1.25 mg short-acting deslorelin as a control (C, n = 5). Ultrasonography of the reproductive tract and ovaries and observation of estrous behavior and collection of blood samples for analysis of progesterone and LH concentrations were performed every second day until day 10 and thereafter at 5-d intervals. Stimulation tests with the GnRH-agonist buserelin were performed on days 10 and 45. Until day 50, there were less spontaneous ovulations in group D1 (P < 0.01) and estrous behavior was reduced in groups D1 and D2 compared with group C (P < 0.05). The time until first ovulation (D1 62.0 ± 8.6, D2 44.2 ± 14.1, C 22.2 ± 3.1 d, P < 0.05) and the number of days with estrous behavior (P < 0.05) differed among groups. On day 10 after treatment, a GnRH stimulation test revealed interactions between group and time (P < 0.001) in plasma LH concentration that were no longer detectable on day 45 after treatment. In conclusion, long-acting deslorelin implants result in a transient downregulation of pituitary GnRH receptors that is associated with inhibition of ovulation and estrous behavior in Shetland mares.

Abstract
Equine Cushing disease [pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID)] is a common condition of older horses, but its pathophysiology is complex and poorly understood. In contrast to pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism in other species, PPID is characterized by elevated plasma ACTH but not elevated plasma cortisol. In this study, we address this paradox and the hypothesis that PPID is a syndrome of ACTH excess in which there is dysregulation of peripheral glucocorticoid metabolism and binding. In 14 horses with PPID compared with 15 healthy controls, we show that in plasma, cortisol levels and cortisol binding to corticosteroid binding globulin were not different; in urine, glucocorticoid and androgen metabolites were increased up to fourfold; in liver, 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) expression was reduced; in perirenal adipose tissue, 11β-HSD1 and carbonyl reductase 1 expression was increased; and tissue cortisol levels were not measurably different. The combination of normal plasma cortisol with markedly enhanced urinary cortisol metabolite excretion and dysregulated tissue-specific steroid-metabolizing enzymes suggests that cortisol clearance is increased in horses with PPID. We infer that the ACTH excess may be compensatory and pituitary pathology and autonomous secretion may be a secondary rather than primary pathology. It is possible that successful therapy in PPID may be targeted either at lowering ACTH or, paradoxically, at reducing cortisol clearance.

Abstract
Androgens modulate maternal ovarian activity, embryo implantation and correct placental development. The objective of this study was to establish reference values for testosterone (T), androstenedione (A4) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) concentrations in pregnant mares. A total of 30 healthy Spanish Purebred mares with an age range of 9.33 ± 3.31 years, were studied during the 11 months of gestation. T, A4 and DHEA concentrations were determined using EIA validated specifically for equines. T increased in the 2nd and 3rd month (P < 0.05), showing a plateau between the 4th and 6th month, decreased from the 7th to the 9th month (P < 0.05) and increased in the 10th month (P < 0.05), reaching the maximum value in the last month of pregnancy (P < 0.05). A4 increased in the 2nd month (P < 0.05), reaching the maximum value in the 3rd month (P < 0.05), decreased in the 4th month, increasing in the 5th and 6th month (P < 0.05). From the 7th month the average values decreased until reaching the minimum at the end of gestation. DHEA progressively increased from the 1st to the 5th month, at which time the maximum mean value was reached (P < 0.05), after a decrease in the 6th and 7th month occurred (P < 0.05), reaching the minimum value in the last month of gestation. T, A4 and DHEA were positive and significantly correlated (P < 0.05). The androgens analyzed in this study can be used as predictive markers of pregnancy in the mare.

Abstract
Steroidogenic activity in the equine ovary from birth to puberty has been poorly investigated. This study aimed to examine the capability of the ovarian follicles of prepubertal and pubertal fillies to produce steroid hormones and to evaluate the expression and cellular localization of androgen receptor (AR) in their ovaries. The ovaries of 6-18 month-old fillies were divided into two groups: prepubertal (PrP) - without preovulatory follicle (pF) and corpus luteum (CL), and ovulating/postpubertal (Ov/pB) - with pF and/or CL in at least one of the gonads. Adult mares (Me) were used as a control. The concentration of progesterone (P4), testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) in follicular fluid (FF) was measured by radioimmunoassay. AR distribution was assessed by immunohistochemistry, while AR protein expression was examined by Western blot analysis. In the female groups, E2 concentration in FF of small follicles (<10 mm) was low and increased with the diameter of the follicle reaching the greatest value in pF (Ov/pB and Me group). In follicles (11-30 mm) of PrP fillies, the concentration of E2 was similar to that from Ov/pB fillies, but less than half (P < 0.05) than in Me follicles. In FF from all classes of follicles of Ov/pB fillies, the concentration of all steroids was similar to that in Me. AR immunolocalization, predominantly nuclear, was observed in all types of follicular cells (granulosa and theca cells) as well as in stroma and luteal cells. The pattern of staining was dependent on the follicle size and the group of females. In smaller antral follicles and in pF, the nuclear AR staining in granulosa cells was stronger than that found in follicles of 21-25 mm. In theca interna cells of pF, both nuclear and faint cytoplasmic reactions were seen. In luteal cells, AR labeling was noted in the nuclei and the cytoplasm: the strongest one in the early CL and almost negative in the late CL. AR protein expression in filly and mare ovarian tissues was confirmed by Western blot analysis and detected as a single band at approximately 110 kDa. In summary, the ovaries of fillies aged at least 6 months are capable of active steroidogenesis. ARs are present either in the cell nuclei or cytoplasm of all compartments of the equine ovary. AR expression in follicular and stroma cells may indicate the sensitivity of the filly ovarian tissue to androgens, the impact of androgens on folliculogenesis and the development of the equine ovary via a receptor-mediated pathway.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to further characterize the ACTH stimulation test as reflected by salivary cortisol response and to measure the short- and long-term repeatability of it in healthy horses as a tool to assess the capacity of the adrenal cortex to secrete cortisol. Nineteen healthy horses were subjected to 3 ACTH stimulation tests. Intervals were 2 wk and 5 mo between the first and second and the second and third tests, respectively. A dose of 1-μg/kg BW synthetic ACTH was injected intravenously. Saliva samples were collected at baseline and at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 min after administration for cortisol measurements using a competitive enzyme immunoassay. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare values within and among horses. Mean ± SD total increase in cortisol concentrations integrated over the entire sampling period was 34.5 ± 11.0 ng/mL. The highest measured concentration at a single time point was 9.7 ± 2.7 ng/mL and was reached after 122 ± 22 min. For the short- and long-term repeatability, intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.90 and 0.33, respectively. The 3 ACTH stimulation tests results differed significantly among (P < 0.00001) but not within (P = 0.538) individual horses. The Freiberger stallions had a higher salivary cortisol baseline concentration and a lower response to ACTH stimulation as compared with Warmblood mares and geldings. The present study confirmed that the administration of ACTH in healthy horses reliably stimulates the salivary secretion of cortisol and shows that the test is repeatable in the short- and long-term.

Abstract
Elevated blood testosterone concentrations, often accompanied by male-typical behaviors, is a common signalment of mares with granulosa-theca cell tumors (GCTCs), but no definitive information exists regarding the cellular differentiation of tumors associated with androgen secretion. This study was conducted to localize and thereby define the cellular expression of 17alpha-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase cytochrome P450 (P450c17), the enzyme most directly responsible for androgen synthesis, in 30 GTCTs and control tissues (gonads and adrenal glands) using immuno-histochemistry (IHC). Immuno-reactivity for P450c17 was evident in approximately half of 30 specimens examined, was most consistent in the interstitial cells surrounding existing or developing cysts, and was less intense in cells within cysts in the smaller proportion of specimens where this was observed. In control tissues, the expression of P450c17 was localized primarily in theca interna of normal ovarian follicles, in theca-lutein cells of some corpora lutea, but not in granulosa-lutein cells. Testicular interstitial cells and islands of adreno-cortical cells located in the adrenal medulla of the adrenal cortex further established the specificity of the antisera used. These data provided the first substantive evidence that polyhedral cells identified previously in GTCTs by histopathology have the potential to synthesize and secrete androgens, similar to theca interna and theca lutein cells in normal equine ovaries.

Abstract
Background Sex steroid hormone receptors have been identified in the adrenal gland of rat, sheep and rhesus monkey, indicating a direct effect of sex steroids on adrenal gland function. Methods In the present study, immunohistochemistry using two different mouse monoclonal antibodies was employed to determine the presence of oestrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) and progesterone receptor (PR) in the mare adrenal gland. Adrenal glands from intact (n = 5) and ovariectomised (OVX) (n = 5) mares, as well as uterine tissue (n = 9), were collected after euthanasia. Three of the OVX mares were treated with a single intramuscular injection of oestradiol benzoate (2.5 mg) 18 – 22 hours prior to euthanasia and tissue collection (OVX+Oe). Uterine tissue was used as a positive control and showed positive staining for both ERalpha and PR. Results ERalpha staining was detected in the adrenal zona glomerulosa, fasciculata and reticularis of all mare groups. Ovariectomy increased cortical ERalpha staining intensity. In OVX mares and one intact mare, positive ERalpha staining was also detected in adrenal medullary cells. PR staining of weak intensity was present in a low proportion of cells in the zona fasciculata and reticularis of all mare groups. Weak PR staining was also found in a high proportion of adrenal medullary cells. In contrast to staining in the adrenal cortex, which was always located within the cell nuclei, medullary staining for both ERalpha and PR was observed only in the cell cytoplasm. Conclusion The present results show the presence of ERalpha in the adrenal cortex, indicating oestradiol may have a direct effect on mare adrenal function. However, further studies are needed to confirm the presence of PR as staining in the present study was only weak and/or minor. Also, any possible effect of oestradiol treatment on the levels of steroid receptors cannot be determined by the present study, as treatment time was of a too short duration.
