Taste and Appetite at Altitude: A Comprehensive Review of Sensory and Hunger Modulation in High-Altitude Environments

Introduction: Individuals living or working at high altitudes typically experience altered taste perceptions and reduced appetite. These changes can lead to nutritional deficiencies, affecting the energy balance and body composition. Methods: We conducted a nonsystematic review of PubMed to explore these phenomena and expound on their findings to offer additional insights. Results: Changes in taste and perception are common and typically lead to loss of mass. There are limited practical solutions to mitigate these challenges. Discussion: Gradual acclimatization and tailored nutritional strategies are required to enhance health and performance in high-altitude environments. This review provides critical insights into the intersection of altitude, nutrition, and health.

Dynamic cerebral blood flow changes with FOXOs stimulation are involved in neuronal damage associated with high-altitude cerebral edema in mice

Acute hypobaric hypoxia (AHH) exposure causes altitude mountain sickness (AMS) and life-threatening high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). Despite decades of research, the role of cerebral blood flow (CBF) changes in the pathophysiology of severe AMS remains unclear. The current study evaluated spatiotemporal responses of CBF associated with HACE in mice during the early stages of ascent to high altitudes. First, mice were exposed to AHH to test their tolerance to increasing altitudes (3000-8000 m). Because of its significant influence on both locomotor activity and rotarod behavior tests in mice, further observations were initiated at an altitude of 6000 m to investigate the specific pathophysiology of AMS. Compared with controls, laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) revealed a significant decrease in CBF during the early stage (0.5-24 h) at an altitude of 6000 m that was accompanied by a significant increase in brain water content (BWC). Moreover, observations of brain lipid oxidative damage and oxidative stress during the early stage of AHH exposure revealed DNA and cellular damage in cortical and hippocampal regions. Transcriptome profiling of the hippocampus revealed upregulation of forkhead box transcription factors. Similarly, western blot assays revealed upregulation of FOXO1a, FOXO3a, caspase-3 and Bax, and downregulation of Bcl-2, indicating a temporal influence of AHH on mitochondrial function and neuronal apoptosis. Thus, we found that the pathophysiology of HACE occurred with dynamic CBF changes, which triggered oxidative stress and neuronal damage in the mouse brain after AHH exposure. Our findings provide potential strategies for treatment of AHH in the future.

Universality vs experience: a cross-cultural pilot study on the consonance effect in music at different altitudes

Background

Previous studies have shown that music preferences are influenced by cultural “rules”, and some others have suggested a universal preference for some features over others.

Methods

We investigated cultural differences on the “consonance effect”, consisting in higher pleasantness judgments for consonant compared to dissonant chords—according to the Western definition of music: Italian and Himalayan participants were asked to express pleasantness judgments for consonant and dissonant chords. An Italian and a Nepalese sample were tested both at 1,450 m and at 4,750 m of altitude, with the further aim to evaluate the effect of hypoxia on this task. A third sample consisted of two subgroups of Sherpas: lowlanders (1,450 m of altitude), often exposed to Western music, and highlanders (3,427 m of altitude), less exposed to Western music. All Sherpas were tested where they lived.

Results

Independently from the altitude, results confirmed the consonance effect in the Italian sample, and the absence of such effect in the Nepalese sample. Lowlander Sherpas revealed the consonance effect, but highlander Sherpas did not show this effect.

Conclusions

Results of this pilot study show that neither hypoxia (altitude), nor demographic features (age, schooling, or playing music), nor ethnicity per se influence the consonance effect. We conclude that music preferences are attributable to music exposure.

Role of Prenatal Hypoxia in Brain Development, Cognitive Functions, and Neurodegeneration

This review focuses on the role of prenatal hypoxia in the development of brain functions in the postnatal period and subsequent increased risk of neurodegenerative disorders in later life. Accumulating evidence suggests that prenatal hypoxia in critical periods of brain formation results in significant changes in development of cognitive functions at various stages of postnatal life which correlate with morphological changes in brain structures involved in learning and memory. Prenatal hypoxia also leads to a decrease in brain adaptive potential and plasticity due to the disturbance in the process of formation of new contacts between cells and propagation of neuronal stimuli, especially in the cortex and hippocampus. On the other hand, prenatal hypoxia has a significant impact on expression and processing of a variety of genes involved in normal brain function and their epigenetic regulation. This results in changes in the patterns of mRNA and protein expression and their post-translational modifications, including protein misfolding and clearance. Among proteins affected by prenatal hypoxia are a key enzyme of the cholinergic system-acetylcholinesterase, and the amyloid precursor protein (APP), both of which have important roles in brain function. Disruption of their expression and metabolism caused by prenatal hypoxia can also result, apart from early cognitive dysfunctions, in development of neurodegeneration in later life. Another group of enzymes affected by prenatal hypoxia are peptidases involved in catabolism of neuropeptides, including amyloid-β peptide (Aβ). The decrease in the activity of neprilysin and other amyloid-degrading enzymes observed after prenatal hypoxia could result over the years in an Aβ clearance deficit and accumulation of its toxic species which cause neuronal cell death and development of neurodegeneration. Applying various approaches to restore expression of neuronal genes disrupted by prenatal hypoxia during postnatal development opens an avenue for therapeutic compensation of cognitive dysfunctions and prevention of Aβ accumulation in the aging brain and the model of prenatal hypoxia in rodents can be used as a reliable tool for assessment of their efficacy.

Does ambient noise or hypobaric atmosphere influence olfactory and gustatory function?

Multidimensional food perception is based mainly on gustatory and olfactory function. Recent research has demonstrated that hypobaric pressure impairs gustatory function and that background noise or distracting auditory stimulation impairs olfactory function. Using a hypobaric chamber, the odor identification, discrimination, and thresholds as well as taste identification and threshold scores were measured in 16 healthy male volunteers under normal and hypobaric (6380 ft) conditions using clinically validated tests. In both conditions, background noise was either canceled out or replaced by white noise presentation (70 dB sound pressure level). Olfactory sensitivity for n-butanol and gustatory sensitivity were impaired in a hypobaric atmosphere. White noise did not influence the odor test results. White noise stimulation impaired sensitivity for sour and sweet but not for bitter or salty tastants. We conclude that hypobaric or noisy environments could impair gustatory and olfactory sensitivity selectively for particular tastants and odorants.
