Investigation on the effects of presentation modality for spatial signals on human performance using a dual task paradigm

A dual task was designed to involve a tracking mission with various tracking speeds and a spatial compatibility task with various signal-key mappings and presentation modalities. This dual task was used to investigate the effects of workload and resource competition in distinct parts of the dual-task process. The results demonstrated that increasing the tracking speed adversely affected the tracking performance but led to positive arousal to the secondary discrete response task. Visual spatial signals gave the shortest reaction time due to the optimal time-sharing of the visual resources in the focal and ambient channels. Compared with visual spatial signals, spatial signals of auditory and tactile modalities did not lead to an improved performance because of their cross-modality nature. These findings provided practical design guidelines for dual tasks in which the operators need to complete a continuous monitoring task visually and elicit timely and accurate responses to spatial information.

Promotion of cooperative lane changes by use of emotional vehicle-to-vehicle communication

This driving simulator study aimed to encourage cooperative lane changes through vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication and explore whether emotional or rational communication content is better in promoting cooperative lane change. A total of 960 lane-changing datapoints from 30 participants in a driving simulation environment were collected. The participants' behavior, driving-related data, and emotional responses were recorded and analyzed. The results revealed that the trigger time to collision (TTC) between the lane changer and the following vehicle in the target lane and communication types were all important factors influencing the willingness of drivers to cooperate. V2V communication could significantly increase the willingness of the driver in the following vehicle to cooperate compared to the traditional method in which desire to change lanes is conveyed with only turn lights. The effect of different communication contents on willingness to cooperate did not vary significantly; however, emotional communication was superior to rational communication in some cases. This indicates that changing lanes owing to an emergency was more likely to be successful. The results of this study can provide a reference for V2V communication design for a safer and more comfortable driving experience.

Evaluation of Multimodal and Multi-Staged Alerting Strategies for Forward Collision Warning Systems

V2X is used for communication between the surrounding pedestrians, vehicles, and roadside units. In the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) of Phase One scenarios in V2X, multimodal modalities and multiple warning stages are the two main warning strategies of FCW. In this study, three warning modalities were introduced, namely auditory warning, visual warning, and haptic warning. Moreover, a multimodal warning and a novel multi-staged HUD warning were established. Then, the above warning strategies were evaluated in objective utility, driving performance, visual workload, and subjective evaluation. As for the driving simulator of the experiment, SCANeR was adopted to develop the driving scenario and an open-cab simulator was built based on Fanatec hardware. Kinematic parameters, location-related data and eye-tracking data were then collected. The results of the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) indicate that the multimodal warning is significantly better than that of every single modality in utility and longitudinal car-following performance, and there is no significant difference in visual workload between multimodal warning and the baseline. The utility and longitudinal driving performance of multi-staged warning are also better than those of single-stage warning. Finally, the results provide a reference for the warning strategy design of the FCW in Intelligent Connected Vehicles.
