Depression and physical health as serial mediators between interpersonal problems and binge-eating behavior among hospital nurses in South Korea

The influence of cyberbullying victimization on adolescents' engagement in non-suicidal self-injurious behavior: A longitudinal multi-mediation analysis

BACKGROUND

Cyberbullying victimization during adolescence may induce an increased risk for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, the longitudinal mediating mechanism underlying the association of cyberbullying victimization with adolescents' NSSI over time has not been studied fully.

OBJECTIVE

The current study aimed to examine the longitudinal mediating mechanism underlying relationship between cyberbullying victimization and NSSI. Based on Nock's (2009) integrated developmental model of NSSI, this study explored the mediating effects of psychological distress and maladaptive beliefs following cyberbullying victimization in this relationship.

PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING

A total of 773 Chinese adolescents (48.4 % males, T3 mean age = 16.37 ± 0.49 years) participated in this study and completed self-report questionnaires.

METHODS

We employed a three-wave (called T1, T2, and T3) longitudinal design. The participants completed all of the questionnaires at T1, completed questionnaires on psychological distress and maladaptive beliefs at T2, and completed the NSSI list at T3. Correlation analysis, structural equation modeling (SEM), and a bootstrap procedure were used to test our expectations.

RESULTS

Correlation analysis indicated that cyberbullying victimization, maladaptive beliefs, psychological distress, and NSSI were significantly and positively correlated with each other. The results of mediation analysis revealed that early cyberbullying victimization (T1) had a direct association with adolescents' subsequent NSSI (T3), and early cyberbullying victimization (T1) indirectly predicted adolescents' subsequent NSSI (T3) via the parallel and sequential mediating effects of maladaptive beliefs (T2) and psychological distress (T2).

CONCLUSIONS

Victims of cyberbullying are often prone to engaging in NSSI. Interventions that target students with NSSI should focus on intervening in their maladaptive beliefs and psychological distress following cyberbullying victimization.

Interpersonal sensitivity on college freshmen's depression: A moderated moderation model of psychological capital and family support

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of depressive symptoms has become very high among college freshmen, with interpersonal sensitivity serving as an important predictor of depression. Combining internal and external positive resources can effectively prevent and alleviate depression. This study explores the moderating role of psychological capital (PsyCap) in the relationship between interpersonal sensitivity and depression, as well as the moderating effect of familial support on the conditional influence of PsyCap among Chinese college freshmen.

METHODS

A cross-sectional mental health survey was performed and the anonymous self-reported questionnaires, including the Patient Health Questionnaire, interpersonal sensitivity subscale of Symptom Checklist-90, Psychological Capital Questionnaire 24, and Perceived Social Support from Family, were distributed to the freshmen. Pearson's coefficient was employed to describe correlations between variables. The PROCESS macro and slope difference tests were used to explore the moderating role of PsyCap and family support in the relationship between interpersonal sensitivity and depression.

RESULTS

The prevalence of depression among freshmen was 30.89% (694/2,247). The correlation analysis revealed that depression negatively related to PsyCap (r = -0.187, p < 0.001) and family support (r = -0.193, p < 0.001) and positively related to interpersonal sensitivity (r = 0.399, p < 0.001). The moderation analysis showed that PsyCap negatively moderated the positive relationship between interpersonal sensitivity and depression (β = -0.159, p < 0.001). We also found that family support played a moderating role in the conditional influence of PsyCap (β = 0.076, p < 0.01). The slope difference test further showed that family support weakened the effect of interpersonal sensitivity on depression in freshmen when they had low PsyCap.

CONCLUSION

More attention should be paid to freshmen's mental health and interpersonal interaction problems. For freshmen with interpersonal sensitivity and depression, mental health departments can conduct PsyCap development interventions to alleviate psychological symptoms. Freshmen themselves should also seek family support in time, but those individuals with high PsyCap should seek an appropriate level of family support to maintain their autonomy.

Binge Eating Disorder Is a Social Justice Issue: A Cross-Sectional Mixed-Methods Study of Binge Eating Disorder Experts' Opinions

BACKGROUND

Binge eating disorder is an autonomous DSM-V diagnosis characterized by discrete rapid consumption of objectively large amounts of food without compensation, associated with loss of control and distress. Environmental factors that contribute to binge eating disorder continue to evolve. This mixed-methods cross-sectional study assessed whether there is consensus among experts in the field about environmental factors that influence adult binge eating disorder pathology.

METHODS

Fourteen expert binge eating disorder researchers, clinicians, and healthcare administrators were identified internationally based on federal funding, PubMed-indexed publications, active practice in the field, leadership in relevant societies, and/or clinical and popular press distinction. Semi-structured interviews were recorded anonymously and analyzed by ≥2 investigators using reflexive thematic analysis and quantification.

RESULTS

Identified themes included: (1) systemic issues and systems of oppression (100%); (2) marginalized and under-represented populations (100%); (3) economic precarity and food/nutrition insecurity/scarcity (93%); (4) stigmatization and its psychological impacts (93%); (5) trauma and adversity (79%); (6) interpersonal factors (64%); (7) social messaging and social media (50%); (8) predatory food industry practices (29%); and (9) research/clinical gaps and directives (100%).

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, experts call for policy changes around systemic factors that abet binge eating and for greater public education about who can have binge eating disorder. There is also a call to take and account for the narratives and life experiences of individuals with binge eating disorder to better inform our current understanding of the diagnosis and the environmental factors that impact it.
