Abstract
Binge eating is defined as eating abnormally large amounts in a brief period of time. Many animal studies have examined the behavioural and physiological effects of binge eating of high-fat, high-sugar foods to model the consequences of human binge eating. The present systematic review of 199 rodent studies sought to identify the behavioural and physiological consequences of binge eating and determine whether changes were specific to binge eating or to general effects of exposure to a palatable diet. A meta-analysis of 18 rodent studies revealed that binge eating produces greater anxiety-like behaviour on the Elevated Plus-Maze with a small effect size and significant funnel plot asymmetry, suggesting that the true effect size is overestimated. A history of binge-like access generally increases progressive ratio breakpoint for the binged food, without altering 'liking' as measured by lick microstructure, suggesting that dissociable effects on 'wanting' but not 'liking' accompany binge eating behaviour and contribute to its persistence. Binge eating appears to enhance compulsive food-seeking behaviour and prevent stress-induced reductions in intake but does not appear to alter depression-like behaviour or locomotor activity. Notably, binge eating may produce comparable metabolic impairments to those observed after extended continuous exposure to a palatable diet despite no overall effects on body weight outcomes in most studies.

Abstract
Binge eating disorder is the most prevalent eating disorder, affecting both sexes but more commonly found in women. Given the frequent co-occurrence of psychiatric disorders, this study aimed to establish a standardized experimental intermittent protocol to investigate overeating associated with depression. A 10-day protocol induced uncontrolled eating behavior in C57BL/6J female mice. The first experiment included the following groups: naive group (chow ad libitum), control group (chow and sucrose solution ad libitum), and fasting groups (16 and 20 h) exposed to an intermittent sucrose solution (10 %) and chow regimen. Subsequently, the feeding test, open field test, elevated plus maze test, tail suspension test, and light/dark conflict test were conducted. Furthermore, monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B activities in brain structures and plasma corticosterone levels were assessed. Food overconsumption and depressive-like behavior were observed in both sucrose fasting groups, while risk-taking behaviors were specifically observed in the 20-hour fasting sucrose group. While both fasting sucrose groups caused reduced hippocampal MAO-A activity, only the F20 sucrose group inhibited MAO-B in the cortex and hypothalamus. Moreover, both fasting sucrose groups exhibited elevated corticosterone levels. In a separate design (Experiment 2), groups with 16 and 20 h of fasting alone (without sucrose) did not show the same behavioral results as the intermittent fasting sucrose groups, thus avoiding fasting bias. Based on these results, the 20-hour sucrose fasting group was chosen as the ideal protocol for mimicking overeating behavior associated with depression to investigate future therapeutic approaches for this comorbidity.

Abstract
SCOPE The effects of diet cycling on cognition and fecal microbiota are not well understood. METHOD AND RESULTS Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were cycled between a high-fat, high-sugar "cafeteria" diet (Caf) and regular chow. The impairment in place recognition memory produced by 16 days of Caf diet was reduced by switching to chow for 11 but not 4 days. Next, rats received 16 days of Caf diet in 2, 4, 8, or 16-day cycles, each separated by 4-day chow cycles. Place recognition memory declined from baseline in all groups and was impaired in the 16- versus 2-day group. Finally, rats received 24 days of Caf diet continuously or in 3-day cycles separated by 2- or 4-day chow cycles. Any Caf diet access impaired cognition and increased adiposity relative to controls, without altering hippocampal gene expression. Place recognition and adiposity were the strongest predictors of global microbiota composition. Overall, diets with higher Caf > chow ratios produced greater spatial memory impairments and larger shifts in gut microbiota species richness and beta diversity. CONCLUSION Results suggest that diet-induced cognitive deficits worsen in proportion to unhealthy diet exposure, and that shifting to a healthy chow for at least a week is required for recovery under the conditions tested here.

Abstract
Alternate day fasting (ADF) which involves the repetition of a 2-day cycle of a day of free access to food followed by a day of limited or no access to food, is an effective dietary intervention for weight loss in both humans and rats. We have previously reported that when presented with a high energy (HE) and standard chow diet, rats maintained on an ADF schedule displayed decreased HE diet preference compared to controls. Both male and female ADF rats increased overall intake of chow. However, this increase was driven by both meal size and meal number for males and only number of meals for females. Administration of cholecystokinin (CCK) or the glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist Exendin-4 (Ex-4) reduces food intake. It appears that CCK decreases food intake primarily through satiety signals whereas GLP-1 signaling may reduce intake by satiety and reward cues. Here, female and male rats were administered (i.p.) saline, 3.0 µg/kg Ex-4 (3 h before test), 3.0 µg/kg CCK (15 min before test) or a combination of both. Next, all rats were presented 23-h access to both HE diet and chow following food-restriction (ADF) or free access to chow (CON). Compared to saline-control sessions, administration of the combination of Ex-4 and CCK, but not Ex-4 or CCK alone, resulted in a decrease in both HE and chow intake early in the session for male ADF rats but the combination primarily decreased chow diet intake early in the session for female ADF rats. Thus, it appears that under these energy homeostatic conditions, administration of Ex-4 or CCK alone does not affect intake in ADF rats, but the combination produces decreases in feeding that are more than the sum of their individual effects. These findings support a role for the combination of GLP-1 and CCK signaling in the changes in diet preference induced by an alternate day fasting paradigm differentially in female and male rats.

Abstract
The antidepressant medication fluoxetine (FLX) is frequently prescribed for the management of mood-related illnesses in the adolescent population-yet its long-term neurobehavioral consequences are not understood. To investigate how juvenile FLX exposure influences feeding behavior in adulthood, we conducted two experiments. In Experiment 1, adolescent male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were administered with 20 mg/kg/day FLX (postnatal day [PND] 35-49) and exposed to a binge access paradigm in adulthood (PND72+) to evaluate potential alterations for sweetened-fat preference. No long-term FLX-induced differences in preference for sweetened fat versus chow, nor total caloric intake, were noted; however, females displayed higher preference for sweetened fat compared to males. In Experiment 2, PND35 male rats received FLX (PND35-49) and were exposed to chronic variable stress (CVS) in adulthood (PND74-88). During treatment, FLX decreased body weight and intake (meal size), but not total meal number. Also, no differences in meal pattern parameters were observed after FLX completion. Likewise, no differences in meal pattern parameters to a palatable diet (45% fat, 17% sucrose) presented from PND74 to PND88, even after CVS, were observed. Our findings indicate that juvenile FLX reduces body weight gain acutely via reduced meal size intake; however, no long-term changes in ad libitum feeding behavior or binge access to a palatable stimulus are evident.

Abstract
Despite numerous studies on the neurobiology of depression, the etiological and pathophysiological mechanisms of this disorder remain poorly understood. A large number of animal models and tests to evaluate depressive-like behavior have been developed. Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) is the most common and frequently used model of depression, and the sucrose preference test (SPT) is one of the most common tests for assessing anhedonia. However, not all laboratories can reproduce the main effects of CUMS, especially when this refers to a decrease in sucrose preference. It is also unknown how the state of anhedonia, assessed by the SPT, relates to the state of anhedonia in patients with depression. We analyzed the literature available in the PubMed database using keywords relevant to the topic of this narrative review. We hypothesize that the poor reproducibility of the CUMS model may be due to differences in sucrose consumption, which may be influenced by such factors as differences in sucrose preference concentration threshold, water and food deprivation, and differences in animals’ susceptibility to stress. We also believe that comparisons between animal and human states of anhedonia should be made with caution because there are many inconsistencies between the two, including in assessment methods. We also tried to offer some recommendations that should improve the reproducibility of the CUMS model and provide a framework for future research.
