Efficiency of La-doped TiO2 calcined at different temperatures in photocatalytic degradation of β-blockers

Effect of Doping TiO2 NPs with Lanthanides (La, Ce and Eu) on the Adsorption and Photodegradation of Cyanide-A Comparative Study

Free cyanide is a highly dangerous compound for health and the environment, so treatment of cyanide-contaminated water is extremely important. In the present study, TiO₂, La/TiO₂, Ce/TiO₂, and Eu/TiO₂ nanoparticles were synthesized to assess their ability to remove free cyanide from aqueous solutions. Nanoparticles synthesized through the sol-gel method were characterized by X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and specific surface area (SSA). Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were utilized to fit the adsorption equilibrium experimental data, and pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models were used to fit the adsorption kinetics experimental data. Cyanide photodegradation and the effect of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the photocatalytic process were investigated under simulated solar light. Finally, reuse of the nanoparticles in five consecutive treatment cycles was determined. The results showed that La/TiO₂ has the highest percentage of cyanide removal (98%), followed by Ce/TiO₂ (92%), Eu/TiO₂ (90%), and TiO₂ (88%). From these results, it is suggested that La, Ce, and Eu dopants can improve the properties of TiO₂ as well as its ability to remove cyanide species from aqueous solutions.

Comparative Study of the Effect of Doping ZnTiO3 with Rare Earths (La and Ce) on the Adsorption and Photodegradation of Cyanide in Aqueous Systems

Cyanide is a highly toxic compound that can pose serious health problems to both humans and aquatic organisms. Therefore, the present comparative study focuses on the removal of total cyanide from aqueous solutions by photocatalytic adsorption and degradation methods using ZnTiO₃ (ZTO), La/ZnTiO₃ (La/ZTO), and Ce/ZnTiO₃ (Ce/ZTO). The nanoparticles were synthesized by the sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and Specific surface area (SSA). The adsorption equilibrium data were fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Adsorption kinetics were also evaluated using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models and the intraparticle diffusion model. Likewise, the photodegradation of cyanide under simulated sunlight was investigated and the reusability of the synthesized nanoparticles for cyanide removal in aqueous systems was determined. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of doping with lanthanum (La) and cerium (Ce) to improve the adsorbent and photocatalytic properties of ZTO. In general, La/ZTO showed the maximum percentage of total cyanide removal (99.0%) followed by Ce/ZTO (97.0%) and ZTO (93.6%). Finally, based on the evidence of this study, a mechanism for the removal of total cyanide from aqueous solutions using the synthesized nanoparticles was proposed.

Facile Synthesis of Gram-Scale Mesoporous Ag/TiO2 Photocatalysts for Pharmaceutical Water Pollutant Removal and Green Hydrogen Generation

This work demonstrates a two-step gram-scale synthesis of presynthesized silver (Ag) nanoparticles impregnated with mesoporous TiO₂ and evaluates their feasibility for wastewater treatment and hydrogen gas generation under natural sunlight. Paracetamol was chosen as the model pharmaceutical pollutant for evaluating photocatalytic performance. A systematic material analysis (morphology, chemical environment, optical bandgap energy) of the Ag/TiO₂ photocatalyst powder was carried out, and the influence of material properties on the performance is discussed in detail. The experimental results showed that the decoration of anatase TiO₂ nanoparticles (size between 80 and 100 nm) with 5 nm Ag nanoparticles (1 wt %) induced visible-light absorption and enhanced charge carrier separation. As a result, 0.01 g/L Ag/TiO₂ effectively removed 99% of 0.01 g/L paracetamol in 120 min and exhibited 60% higher photocatalytic removal than pristine TiO₂. Alongside paracetamol degradation, Ag/TiO₂ led to the generation of 1729 μmol H₂ g^-1 h^-1. This proof-of-concept approach for tandem pollutant degradation and hydrogen generation was further evaluated with rare earth metal (lanthanum)- and nonmetal (nitrogen)-doped TiO₂, which also showed a positive response. Using a combination of ab initio calculations and our new theory model, we revealed that the enhanced photocatalytic performance of Ag/TiO₂ was due to the surface Fermi-level change of TiO₂ and lowered surface reaction energy barrier for water pollutant oxidation. This work opens new opportunities for exploiting tandem photocatalytic routes beyond water splitting and understanding the simultaneous reactions in metal-doped metal oxide photocatalyst systems under natural sunlight.

The Effect of La3+ on the Methylene Blue Dye Removal Capacity of the La/ZnTiO3 Photocatalyst, a DFT Study

Theoretically, lanthanum can bond with surface oxygens of ZnTiO₃ to form La-O-Ti bonds, resulting in the change of both the band structure and the electron state of the surface. To verify this statement, DFT calculations were performed using a model with a dispersed lanthanum atom on the surface (101) of ZnTiO₃. The negative heat segmentation values obtained suggest that the incorporation of La on the surface of ZnTiO₃ is thermodynamically stable. The bandgap energy value of La/ZnTiO₃ (2.92 eV) was lower than that of ZnTiO₃ (3.16 eV). TDOS showed that the conduction band (CB) and the valence band (VB) energy levels of La/ZnTiO₃ are denser than those of ZnTiO₃ due to the participation of hybrid levels composed mainly of O2p and La5d orbitals. From the PDOSs, Bader's charge analysis, and ELF function, it was established that the La-O bond is polar covalent. MB adsorption on La/ZnTiO₃ (-200 kJ/mol) was more favorable than on ZnTiO₃ (-85 kJ/mol). From the evidence of this study, it is proposed that the MB molecule first is adsorbed on the surface of La/ZnTiO₃, and then the electrons in the VB of La/ZnTiO₃ are photoexcited to hybrid levels, and finally, the MB molecule oxidizes into smaller molecules.

Synthesis of new composite based on TiO2 immobilized in glass fibers for photo-catalytic degradation of chlorobenzene in aqueous solutions

In this study photo-catalytic degradation of chlorobenzene from aqueous solutions using CQD decorated Fe-doped TiO₂ immobilized in Glass Fibers (GF) was investigated. Characteristics of the synthesized photo-catalyst were determined by EF-SEM, EDX, BET, XRD, FTIR, and DRS analysis. Additionally, DRS analysis demonstrated adding CQD to the TiO₂-Fe reduced its band gap energy from 2.96 eV to 2.91eV, while that was 3.10 eV for undoped TiO₂. Among that three photo-catalysts, GF/CQD_(4.5 wt%) decorated Fe-TiO₂ composite had performance nearly 100.0%, when pH was 5 and low concentration of chlorobenzene. In addition, GF/CQD_(4.5 wt%) decorated Fe-TiO₂ composite show it could be well applied for five times and with a little reduction on the performance. Also, no detectable Fe found to be released from the composite. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for E. coli bacteria was 12.2 mg L^-1 of chlorobenzene residual. Our findings show the catalyst was successful for chlorobenzene removal in the wastewater effluent. In conclusion, present hybrid composite could successfully and safely remove chlorobenzene from synthetic aqueous solution.

Design and Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of TiO2-Lanthanides Systems and Evaluation of Photocatalytic Activity under UV-LED Light Irradiation

The TiO2-Eu and TiO2-La systems were successfully synthesized using the microwave method. Based on the results of X-ray diffraction analysis, it was found that regardless of the analyzed systems, two crystal structures were noted for the obtained samples: anatase and rutile. The analysis, such as XPS and EDS, proved that the doped lanthanum and europium nano-particles are present only on the TiO2 surface without disturbing the crystal lattice. In the synthesized systems, there were no significant changes in the bandgap energy. Moreover, all the obtained systems were characterized by high thermal stability. One of the key objectives of the work, and a scientific novelty, was the introduction of UV-LED lamps into the metronidazole photo-oxidation pathway. The results of the photo-oxidation study showed that the obtained TiO2 systems doped with selected lanthanides (Eu or La) show high efficiency in the removal of metronidazole, and at the same consuming nearly 10 times less electricity compared to conventional UV lamps (high-pressure mercury lamp). Liquid-chromatography mass-spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis of an intermediate solution showed the presence of fragments of the degraded molecule by m/z 114, 83, and 60, prompting the formulation of a plausible photodegradation pathway for metronidazole.

La-Doped ZnTiO3/TiO2 Nanocomposite Supported on Ecuadorian Diatomaceous Earth as a Highly Efficient Photocatalyst Driven by Solar Light

Currently, there is great interest in the use of TiO2 for photocatalytic remediation of wastewater. Doping, heterojunction, and immobilization on porous materials are effective methods to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of this semiconductor oxide. In this study, ZnTiO3/TiO2 (ZTO) and ZnTiO3/TiO2/La (ZTO/La) nanocomposites were successfully prepared and immobilized on diatomaceous earth (DE). The composition and texture of the composites prepared were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX), and specific surface area (SSA). The adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity of the composites were determined via degradation of methylene blue (MB) in batch reactors. The materials evaluated were prepared in the shape of 0.2 cm (diameter) and 1.0 cm (length) cylindrical extrudates. The results indicate that the ZTO/La-DE composite exhibited higher efficiency for the removal of MB under solar irradiation than both ZTO-DE and DE. The pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model were better suited to explain the adsorption process. The highest degradation percentage of MB obtained was 96% after 150 min of irradiation. The results indicate that synthesized composite could be used for the removal of cationic dyes in wastewater.

Water-Active Titanium/Molybdenum/Mixed-Oxides: Removal Efficiency of Organic Water Pollutants by Adsorption and Photocatalysis and Toxicity Assessment

A new titanium/molybdenum/mixed-oxides (TMO) contact-type heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared by a simple, low-cost, and environmentally-friendly mixing-calcination solid-state method. A microstructural investigation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showsirregularly shaped agglomerated morphology of TMO that consists of firmly connected globular TiO2 and rod-like MoO3 particles. The detailed structure and optical bandgap investigation by X-ray diffraction, Raman, and UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed the TMO’s composition of ~37 wt.% rutile TiO2, ~25 wt.% of anatase TiO2, and ~38 wt.% of molybdite MoO3 phase and an absorption threshold of around 380 nm, which implies more probability of desirable higher visible light absorption. The removal efficiency of pesticides quinmerac (QUI) and tembotrione (TEM), and pharmaceuticals metoprolol (MET), amitriptyline (AMI), ciprofloxacin (CIP),and ceftriaxone (CEF) from water in the presence of starting pure TiO2, MoO3, and prepared TMO were investigated under different pH values and UV irradiation/simulated sunlight (SS). Each starting metal-oxide precursors and prepared TMO showed a different affinity for adsorption of tested pesticides and pharmaceuticals, and, in general, better photocatalytic degradation efficiency under UV irradiation than under simulated sunlight. The highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency under UV irradiation was 81.6% for TEM using TMO; using TiO2 was 65.0% for AMI, and using MoO3 was 79.3% for CEF after 135 min. However, TMO showed a very high synergic adsorption/photocatalytic under-SS efficiency in the removal of CIP of almost 80% and under UV irradiation of 90% CIP removal after 75 min. The toxicity of catalysts, starting compounds, and their intermediates formed during the removal process was assessed using a rat hepatoma cell line (H-4-II-E). The highest hepatotoxic effects were obtained by using UV irradiated QUI and MET suspension with TMO for up to 60 min.

Photo-catalytic degradation of bisphenol-a from aqueous solutions using GF/Fe-TiO2-CQD hybrid composite

In this photocatalytic study, removal of bisphenol-A from aqueous solution was studied using the GF/Fe-TiO2-CQD composite. Due to its health and environmental effects, this compound should be disposed of sources that are mainly industrial wastewater. The phis-chemical properties of the composite were determined by traditional analyzes of EF-SEM, EDX, BET, XRD, FTIR and DRS. In this study, different ratios of CQD in the composite (1.5, 4.5 and 7.5 wt%), pH, and bisphenol-A concentration as variable parameters were investigated. All analyzes, EF-SEM, EDX, BET, XRD, FTIR, show that the GF/Fe-TiO2-CQD composite is well coated on glass fibers (GF) and all the elements in the catalyst are present. On the other hand, DRS analysis showed that CQD reduces the band gap of Fe-TiO2 from 2.96 eV to 2.91 eV, it was 3.10 eV for TiO2. Among different catalysts, GF/Fe-TiO2-CQD4.5wt% has the best performance. The results showed that for GF/Fe-TiO2-CQD4.5wt%, optimum for the process was at pH = 6 in low concentration of bisphenol-A. The first order model for the photocatalytic degradation process were well studied. In addition, GF/Fe-TiO2-CQD4.5wt% showed that it can be used many times with a minimal reduction in performance. As a result, the GF/Fe-TiO2-CQD4.5wt% composite can successfully remove bisphenol-A form in synthetic aqueous solution. However, it is necessary to further studies to applied that for real water source in water and wastewater treatment plants.

Kinetics, mechanism and toxicity of intermediates of solar light induced photocatalytic degradation of pindolol: Experimental and computational modeling approach

In this work, we have investigated the stability of pindolol (PIN), a non-selective β₁-blocker detected in the river and wastewater of hospitals, in water solution under solar irradiation. Further, detailed insights into the stability of PIN were obtained by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. The kinetics of PIN photocatalytic degradation and mineralization has been studied using four commercial photocatalysts ZnO and TiO₂ (P25, Hombikat, and Wackherr). It was found that the major role in degradation of PIN play the reactive hydroxyl radicals. The structures of degradation intermediates were suggested by LC-ESI-MS/MS and DFT calculations. Also, DFT calculations were used to refine molecular structures of intermediates and obtain their geometries. Toxicity of PIN and its mixtures formed during photocatalytic degradation were investigated using mammalian cell lines (H-4-II-E, HT-29, and MRC-5). The H-4-II-E cell line was the most sensitive to PIN and its photodegradation mixtures. The computational results were combined with the experimental data on the amounts of degradation intermediates for determination of the intermediates that were principally responsible for the toxicity. Intermediate with two hydroxyl groups, positioned on indole ring in meta and para positions, was proposed as the one with the highest contribution to toxicity.

Photocatalytic decomposition of methanol over La/TiO2 materials

Lanthanum-modified TiO₂ photocatalysts (0.2-1.5 wt% La) were investigated in the methanol decomposition in an aqueous solution. The photocatalysts were prepared by the common sol-gel method followed by calcination. The structural (X-ray diffraction, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), textural (N₂ physisorption), and optical properties (diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoelectrochemical measurements) of all synthetized nanomaterials were correlated with photocatalytic activity. Both pure TiO₂ and La-doped TiO₂ photocatalysts proved higher yields of hydrogen in comparison to photolysis. The photocatalyst with optimal amount of lanthanum (0.2 wt% La) showed almost two times higher amount of hydrogen produced at the same time as in the presence of pure TiO₂. The photocatalytic activity increased with both increasing photocurrent response and decreasing amount of lattice and surface O species. It has been shown that both direct and indirect mechanisms of methanol photocatalytic oxidation participate in the production of hydrogen. Both direct and indirect mechanisms take part in the formation of hydrogen.
