Near infrared-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting: Review and future prospects

Manipulation of interfacial charge dynamics for metal-organic frameworks toward advanced photocatalytic applications

Compared to other known materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have the highest surface area and the lowest densities; as a result, MOFs are advantageous in numerous technological applications, especially in the area of photocatalysis. Photocatalysis shows tantalizing potential to fulfill global energy demands, reduce greenhouse effects, and resolve environmental contamination problems. To exploit highly active photocatalysts, it is important to determine the fate of photoexcited charge carriers and identify the most decisive charge transfer pathway. Methods to modulate charge dynamics and manipulate carrier behaviors may pave a new avenue for the intelligent design of MOF-based photocatalysts for widespread applications. By summarizing the recent developments in the modulation of interfacial charge dynamics for MOF-based photocatalysts, this minireview can deliver inspiring insights to help researchers harness the merits of MOFs and create versatile photocatalytic systems.

Epitaxial grown [hk1] oriented 2D/1D Bi2O2S/Sb2S3 heterostructure with significantly enhanced photoelectrochemical performance

Bismuth oxysulfide (Bi2O2S) is a layered material with high carrier mobility, excellent light absorption characteristic and good stability. However, there are few reports about the use of Bi2O2S in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. In this paper, Bi2O2S nanosheets (NSs) films were prepared on FTO substrates by one-step hydrothermal method, which broke the traditional powder state of Bi2O2S prepared. Based on the high lattice matching between antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) and bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) obtained from the topological transformation of partial Bi2O2S, Sb2S3 nanorods (NRs) with [hk1] predominant orientation were epitaxially grown on the surface of Bi2O2S to establish a transport channel for rapid carrier migration. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) electron transport layer with oxygen vacancies was introduced into the back to capture and release electrons, further reducing the recombination rate. The photocurrent density of TiO2/Bi2O2S/Sb2S3-annealed photoelectrode at 1.23 V vs. RHE was 4.37 mA/cm2, which was 13.7 times that of monomer Bi2O2S. In addition, the TiO2/Bi2O2S/Sb2S3-annealed photoelectrode had lower charge transfer resistance and the IPCE value up to 48.22%. This study is of great significance for the application of Bi2O2S based photoelectrodes in the field of PEC water splitting.

Dual-plasmonic Au@Cu7S4 yolk@shell nanocrystals for photocatalytic hydrogen production across visible to near infrared spectral region

Near infrared energy remains untapped toward the maneuvering of entire solar spectrum harvesting for fulfilling the nuts and bolts of solar hydrogen production. We report the use of Au@Cu7S4 yolk@shell nanocrystals as dual-plasmonic photocatalysts to achieve remarkable hydrogen production under visible and near infrared illumination. Ultrafast spectroscopic data reveal the prevalence of long-lived charge separation states for Au@Cu7S4 under both visible and near infrared excitation. Combined with the advantageous features of yolk@shell nanostructures, Au@Cu7S4 achieves a peak quantum yield of 9.4% at 500 nm and a record-breaking quantum yield of 7.3% at 2200 nm for hydrogen production in the absence of additional co-catalysts. The design of a sustainable visible- and near infrared-responsive photocatalytic system is expected to inspire further widespread applications in solar fuel generation. In this work, the feasibility of exploiting the localized surface plasmon resonance property of self-doped, nonstoichiometric semiconductor nanocrystals for the realization of wide-spectrum-driven photocatalysis is highlighted.

Understanding the charge transfer dynamics of the Cu2WS4-CNT-FeOOH ternary composite for photo-electrochemical studies

Ternary transition metal chalcogenide (Cu2WS4) is a semiconductor with a band gap of 2.1 eV and could be a promising candidate for photoelectrochemical water splitting and solar energy conversion applications. Despite numerous reports on ternary transition metal chalcogenides, this semiconductor's ultrafast charge transfer dynamics remain unknown. Here, we report on charge carrier dynamics in a pristine Cu2WS4 system with the aid of ultrafast transient (TA) pump-probe spectroscopy and a hot carrier transfer process from Cu2WS4 to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and FeOOH has been observed. Furthermore, we have explored Cu2WS4-FeOOH having a type-II composite for photo-electrochemical (PEC) water oxidation and modified this with the addition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes to expedite the charge-transfer processes and photo-anodic performance. The photo-electrochemical studies demonstrate that the Cu2WS4-CNT, Cu2WS4-FeOOH, and Cu2WS4-CNT-FeOOH provide nearly 3-, 8- and 12-fold enhancement in photocurrent density relative to the bare Cu2WS4 photo-anode at 1.23 V vs. RHE. These photo-electrochemical studies support the results obtained from the TA investigation and further prove the higher charge separation in the ternary composite system. These studies probe the excited states and provide evidence of longer charge separation in the binary and ternary composites, responsible for their remarkable photo-electrochemical performance.

In Situ Filling of the Oxygen Vacancies with Dual Heteroatoms in Co3O4 for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting is a crucial area in sustainable energy development, and the development of highly efficient bifunctional catalysts that exhibit activity toward both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of paramount importance. Co₃O₄ is a promising candidate catalyst, owing to the variable valence of Co, which can be exploited to enhance the bifunctional catalytic activity of HER and OER through rational adjustments of the electronic structure of Co atoms. In this study, we employed a plasma-etching strategy in combination with an in situ filling of heteroatoms to etch the surface of Co₃O₄, creating abundant oxygen vacancies, while simultaneously filling them with nitrogen and sulfur heteroatoms. The resulting N/S-V_O-Co₃O₄ exhibited favorable bifunctional activity for alkaline electrocatalytic water splitting, with significantly enhanced HER and OER catalytic activity compared to pristine Co₃O₄. In an alkaline overall water-splitting simulated electrolytic cell, N/S-V_O-Co₃O₄ || N/S-V_O-Co₃O₄ showed excellent overall water splitting catalytic activity, comparable to noble metal benchmark catalysts Pt/C || IrO₂, and demonstrated superior long-term catalytic stability. Additionally, the combination of in situ Raman spectroscopy with other ex situ characterizations provided further insight into the reasons behind the enhanced catalyst performance achieved through the in situ incorporation of N and S heteroatoms. This study presents a facile strategy for fabricating highly efficient cobalt-based spinel electrocatalysts incorporated with double heteroatoms for alkaline electrocatalytic monolithic water splitting.

Engineering Cu/NiCu LDH Heterostructure Nanosheet Arrays for Highly-Efficient Water Oxidation

The development of stable and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction is of great significance for electro-catalytic water splitting. Bimetallic layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising OER catalysts, in which NiCu LDH has excellent stability compared with the most robust NiFe LDH, but the OER activity is not satisfactory. Here, we designed a NiCu LDH heterostructure electrocatalyst (Cu/NiCu LDH) modified by Cu nanoparticles which has excellent activity and stability. The Cu/NiCu LDH electrocatalyst only needs a low over-potential of 206 mV and a low Tafel slope of 86.9 mV dec^-1 at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and maintains for 70 h at a high current density of 100 mA cm^-2 in 1M KOH. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that there was a strong electronic interaction between Cu nanoparticles and NiCu LDH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the electronic coupling between Cu nanoparticles and NiCu LDH can effectively improve the intrinsic OER activity by optimizing the conductivity and the adsorption energy of oxygen-containing intermediates.

CuO nanorod arrays by gas-phase cation exchange for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting

CuO has been considered a promising candidate for photoelectrochemical water splitting electrodes owing to its suitable bandgap, favorable band alignments, and earth-abundant nature. In this paper, a novel gas-phase cation exchange method was developed to synthesize CuO nanorod arrays by using ZnO nanorod arrays as the template. ZnO nanorods were fully converted to CuO nanorods with aspect ratios of 10-20 at the temperature range from 350 to 600 °C. The as-synthesized CuO nanorods exhibit a photocurrent as high as 2.42 mA cm^-2 at 0 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode) under 1.5 AM solar irradiation, demonstrating the potential as the photoelectrode for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting. Our method provides a new approach for the rational fabrication of high-performance CuO-based nanodevices.

Development of Binder-Free Three-Dimensional Honeycomb-like Porous Ternary Layered Double Hydroxide-Embedded MXene Sheets for Bi-Functional Overall Water Splitting Reactions

In this study, a honeycomb-like porous-structured nickel-iron-cobalt layered double hydroxide/Ti₃C₂T_x (NiFeCo-LDH@MXene) composite was successfully fabricated on a three-dimensional nickel foam using a simple hydrothermal approach. Owing to their distinguishable characteristics, the fabricated honeycomb porous-structured NiFeCo-LDH@MXene composites exhibited outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for pair hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions in alkaline medium. The developed NiFeCo-LDH@MXene electrocatalyst required low overpotentials of 130 and 34 mV to attain a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 for OER and HER, respectively. Furthermore, an assembled NiFeCo-LDH@MXene‖NiFeCo-LDH@MXene device exhibited a cell voltage of 1.41 V for overall water splitting with a robust firmness for over 24 h to reach 10 mA cm^-2 current density, signifying outstanding performance for water splitting reactions. These results demonstrated the promising potential of the designed 3D porous NiFeCo-LDH@MXene sheets as outstanding candidates to replace future green energy conversion devices.

Hotspots in action: near-infrared light mediated photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution on high index faceted plasmonic gold nanoarchitectures

Photo-induced electrochemical water splitting is a fascinating approach to overcome the present energy demands as well as environmental issues. To this end, near-infrared (NIR) photocatalysts stand out as promising candidates (where 53% of the solar light is NIR light) to solve the present energy crisis but the lack of NIR-activated photocatalysts has remained a great challenge for decades. Herein, for the first time, we report the synthesis of high-index faceted plasmonic Au nano-branched 12 tip nanostars, which can absorb the whole spectral region of electromagnetic radiation (UV-vis-NIR), for efficient water splitting. Moreover, the plasmonic hot spots on the Au 12 tip nanostars significantly promote the photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under NIR light (915 nm) with long-term stability. Remarkably, the Au 12 tip nanostars exhibit 250-fold enhancement of activity under 915 nm laser irradiation and 6.5-fold enhancement of activity under 532 nm laser irradiation, as compared to the Au NPs. Furthermore, the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) study confirmed that the significant photoelectrochemical (PEC) enhancement in the NIR light region could be attributed to the hot-electron injection/plasmonic hot spot mechanism upon localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) excitation. Overall, we anticipate that the present work would help to develop new NIR photoelectrocatalysts for meeting future energy demands.

Photoelectrochemical performance of a spin coated TiO2 protected BiVO4-Cu2O thin film tandem cell for unassisted solar water splitting

A tandem cell consisting of a Mo-BiVO₄/TiO₂/FeOOH photoanode–Cu₂O/TiO₂/MoS₂ photocathode was prepared for unassisted solar water splitting. The protective TiO₂ layer was prepared by a cost-effective spin coating technique. The individual Mo-BiVO₄/TiO₂/FeOOH photoanode and the Cu₂O/TiO₂/MoS₂ photocathode yielded a current density of ∼0.81 mA cm⁻² at 1.23 V vs. RHE and ∼−1.88 mA cm⁻² at 0 V vs. RHE, respectively under 100 mW cm⁻² xenon lamp illumination. From the individual photoelectrochemical analysis, we identify the operating points of the tandem cell as 0.66 V vs. RHE and 0.124 mA cm⁻². The positive current density from the operating points proves the possibility of non-zero operation of the tandem cell. Finally, a two-electrode Mo-BiVO₄/TiO₂/FeOOH-Cu₂O/TiO₂/MoS₂ tandem cell was constructed and analysed for unassisted operation. The obtained unassisted current density of the tandem cell was ∼65.3 μA cm⁻² with better stability compared to the bare BiVO₄-Cu₂O tandem cell. The results prove that the spin coated TiO₂ protective layer can be a viable approach to protect the photoelectrodes from photocorrosion with better stability and enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance.

Mo-BiVO₄/TiO₂/FeOOH photoanode–Cu₂O/TiO₂/MoS₂ photocathode tandem cells with photoelectrochemical stability testing.

Intriguing electronic, optical and photocatalytic performance of BSe, M2CO2 monolayers and BSe-M2CO2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) van der Waals heterostructures

Using density functional (DFT) theory calculations, we have investigated the electronic band structure, optical and photocatalytic response of BSe, M₂CO₂ (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) monolayers and their corresponding BSe–M₂CO₂ (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. Optimized lattice constant, bond length, band structure and bandgap values, effective mass of electrons and holes, work function and conduction and valence band edge potentials of BSe and M₂CO₂ (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) monolayers are in agreement with previously available data. Binding energies, interlayer distance and Ab initio molecular dynamic simulations (AIMD) calculations show that BSe–M₂CO₂ (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) vdW heterostructures are stable with specific stacking and demonstrate that these heterostructures might be synthesized in the laboratory. The electronic band structure shows that all the studied vdW heterostructures have indirect bandgap nature – with the CBM and VBM at the Γ–K and Γ-point of BZ for BSe–Ti₂CO₂, respectively; while for BSe–Zr₂CO₂ and BSe–Hf₂CO₂ vdW heterostructures the CBM and VBM lie at the K-point and Γ-point of BZ, respectively. Type-II band alignment in BSe–M₂CO₂ (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) vdW heterostructures prevent the recombination of electron–hole pairs, and hence are crucial for light harvesting and detection. Absorption spectra are investigated to understand the optical behavior of BSe–M₂CO₂ (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) vdW heterostructures, where the lowest energy transitions are dominated by excitons. Furthermore, BSe–M₂CO₂ (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) vdW heterostructures are found to be potential photocatalysts for water splitting at pH = 0, and exhibit enhanced optical properties in the visible light zones.

Growth of CeO2 nanocubes showing size-dependent optical and oxygen evolution reaction behaviors

CeO₂ nanocubes with average sizes of 9, 13, and 18 nm have been synthesized by preparing a slightly basic aqueous mixture of Ce(NO₃)₃, Na₂SO₄, and NH₄OH and heating the solution to 100 to 150 °C in 4 or 9 h. The nanocubes possess high crystalline quality. Their band gaps decrease gradually beyond the quantum confinement regime from 3.57 eV to 3.45 eV with increasing particle sizes. The 9 nm CeO₂ nanocubes have the most positive valence band energy and correspondingly they exhibit the best electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction activity. Since band gaps of semiconductor nanocrystals can be tuned substantially through particle size control to yield different band energies, this fact can be utilized to enhance the electrochemical and photocatalytic properties.

Yolk-shell nanostructures: synthesis, photocatalysis and interfacial charge dynamics

Solar energy has long been regarded as a promising alternative and sustainable energy source. In this regard, photocatalysts emerge as a versatile paradigm that can practically transform solar energy into chemical energy. At present, unsatisfactory conversion efficiency is a major obstacle to the widespread deployment of photocatalysis technology. Many structural engineering strategies have been proposed to address the issue of insufficient activity for semiconductor photocatalysts. Among them, creation of yolk-shell nanostructures which possess many beneficial features, such as large surface area, efficient light harvesting, homogeneous catalytic environment and enhanced molecular diffusion kinetics, has attracted particular attention. This review summarizes the developments that have been made for the preparation and photocatalytic applications of yolk-shell nanostructures. Additional focus is placed on the realization of interfacial charge dynamics and the possibility of achieving spatial separation of charge carriers for this unique nanoarchitecture as charge transfer is the most critical factor determining the overall photocatalytic efficiency. A future perspective that can facilitate the advancement of using yolk-shell nanostructures in sophisticated photocatalytic systems is also presented.

Factors influencing the adsorption and photocatalysis of direct red 80 in the presence of a TiO2: Equilibrium and kinetics modeling

Among the different photocatalysts, TiO2 ( Eg = 3.1 eV, zero charge point (pHpzc = 6.3), and surface = 55 m2/g) is currently the most efficient and the most studied semiconductor due to its strong photocatalytic activity, non-toxicity, and chemical stability. The elimination of DR-80 on TiO2 is studied by adsorption in batch mode and by application of heterogeneous photocatalysis onto TiO2 under UV irradiation. The effects of contact time (0–60 min), initial pH (3–11), dose of the adsorbent (0.5–3 g L−1), and DR-80 concentration (40–60 mg L−1) on the adsorption of DR-80 by TiO2 are studied for optimization of these parameters. The kinetic parameters, rate constants, and equilibrium adsorption capacities are calculated and discussed for each applied theoretical model. The adsorption of DR-80 is well described by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The fitting of the adsorption isotherms shows that the models of Langmuir and Temkin offering a better fit and an adsorption 64.102 mg/g at 25 °C of DR-80 are eliminated. The results showed that the photocatalytic efficiency strongly depends on the pH while the initial rate of photodegradation is proportional to the catalyst dose, and becomes almost constant above a threshold value. It was found that the photodegradation is favored at low DR-80 concentrations in accordance with the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model with the constants Kad = 6.5274 L/mg and KL–H = 0.17818 mg L−1 min. However, the adsorption is improved for high DR-80 concentrations. It is found that the degradation depends on both the temperature and the pH with a high elimination rate at high temperature. The photocatalyst TiO2 has a better activity for the degradation of DR-80, compared to some commercial catalysts that have been described in the literature.

Ultrathin Z-scheme 2D/2D N-doped HTiNbO5 nanosheets/g-C3N4 porous composites for efficient photocatalytic degradation and H2 generation under visible light

To realize highly efficient utilization of solar energy for solving problems of environmental pollution and energy shortage has attracted increasing attention. Herein, a two-step exfoliation-restacking process was employed to construct ultrathin Z-scheme two-dimensional (2D)/2D N-doped HTiNbO₅ nanosheets/g-C₃N₄ (RTCN) heterojunction composites with the increased specific surface areas, showing the enhanced photocatalytic performance for rhodamine B (RhB) degradation and hydrogen (H₂) generation under visible light irradiation. A 2D/2D heterojunction structure was formed between N-doped H⁺-restacked HTiNbO₅ nanosheets (N-RTNS) and g-C₃N₄, which was beneficial for the effectively spatial separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The improved photocatalytic activities may be attributed to the synergistic effects of the increased specific surface area, N-doping and 2D/2D heterostructure. The active species of holes (h⁺), hydroxyl (•OH) and superoxide (•O₂^-) radicals contributed to RhB photodegradation. A Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was proposed over RTCN-2 composite, showing dual advantages of the highly redox ability and efficient charge carrier separation.

Photocatalytic partial oxidation of methanol to methyl formate under visible light irradiation on Bi-doped TiO2 via tuning band structure and surface hydroxyls

Preparing visible light responsive catalysts for partial oxidation of methanol to methyl formate is a challenging issue. This work addresses the synthesis, characterization and theoretical calculation of Bi doped TiO₂ catalysts as well as their photocatalytic performance and reaction mechanism for MF synthesis from methanol. The catalysts were prepared by a simple wet chemical method. The results of the characterization and theoretical calculation evidenced that bismuth was intercalated in the lattice of anatase by the substitution of titanium. Impurity levels were formed in the valence band, conduction band and between the two bands. The Bi 6s and 5p orbitals contributed to the formation of the impurity levels. The photo-excited electrons transited from the valence band via impurity levels, formed by Bi 6s orbitals, to the conduction band. The doping of Bi enhanced surface hydroxyls, reduced the band gaps and raised the valence band edges (VBE) of the Bi doped catalyst. The Bi doped catalysts were visible light responsive due to the reduced band gap. The surface hydroxyls were beneficial to the methanol conversion, and the rise of the VBE enhanced the redox potential of the photogenerated holes. Only moderate redox potentials and sufficient surface hydroxyls could lead to high methanol conversion and MF selectivity. This study is of great significance to the development of the photocatalytic synthesis theory and provides a green route for MF synthesis from methanol.

Bi-doped titania is well studied for photocatalytic partial oxidation of methanol to methyl formate under visible light irradiation.

Phyto-inspired and scalable approach for the synthesis of PdO-2Mn2O3: a nano-material for application in water splitting electro-catalysis

A modified co-precipitation method has been used for the synthesis of a PdO-2Mn₂O₃ nanocomposite as an efficient electrode material for the electro-catalytic oxygen evolution (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Palladium acetate and manganese acetate in molar ratio 1 : 4 were dissolved in water, and 10 ml of an aqueous solution of phyto-compounds was slowly added until completion of precipitation. The filtered and dried precipitates were then calcined at 450 °C to obtain a blackish brown colored mixture of PdO-2Mn₂O₃ nanocomposite. These particles were analyzed by ultra violet visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for crystallinity, optical properties, and compositional and morphological makeup. Using Tauc's plot, the direct band gap (3.18 eV) was calculated from the absorption spectra. The average crystallite sizes, as calculated from the XRD, were found to be 15 and 14.55 nm for PdO and Mn₂O₃, respectively. A slurry of the phyto-fabricated PdO-2Mn₂O₃ powder was deposited on Ni-foam and tested for electro-catalytic water splitting studies in 1 M KOH solution. The electrode showed excellent OER and HER performance with low over-potential (0.35 V and 121 mV) and Tafel slopes of 115 mV dec^-1 and 219 mV dec^-1, respectively. The outcomes obtained from this study provide a direction for the fabrication of a cost-effective mixed metal oxide based electro-catalyst via an environmentally benign synthesis approach for the generation of clean energy.

Enhanced stability and ultrahigh activity of amorphous ripple nanostructured Ni-doped Fe oxyhydroxide electrode toward synergetic electrocatalytic water splitting

The development of high-performance catalysts for oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) is paramount for cost-effective conversion of renewable electricity to fuels and chemicals. Here we report, highly efficient, ultra-durable and earth-abundant Ni@Fe-NP electrocatalysts developed by solvothermal method for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The newly developed oxygen electrode show prolonged stability and high catalytic-activity in line with water oxidation keeping alkaline condition which requires overpotential of only 211 mV at current density of 10 mA cm⁻². Collectively, the as-prepared amorphous Ni@Fe-NP rippled nanostructured electrode is the most effective oxygen evolution electrode in alkaline solution. Therefore, this study will offer exciting new avenues for designing self-supported electrode materials towards water splitting and other applications.

The development of high-performance catalysts for oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) is paramount for cost-effective conversion of renewable electricity to fuels and chemicals.

Controllable growth of MoS2 nanosheets on TiO2 burst nanotubes and their photocatalytic activity

Microwave-assisted synthesis of an RGO/CdS/TiO2 step-scheme with exposed TiO2 {001} facets and enhanced visible photocatalytic activity

Semiconductor-based heterojunction photocatalysts with a special active crystal surface act as an essential part in environmental remediation and renewable energy technologies. In this study, an RGO/CdS/TiO₂ step-scheme with high energy {001} TiO₂ facets was successfully fabricated via a microwave-assisted solvothermal method. The photocatalytic performance of as-prepared samples was assessed by degrading methylene blue under visible light irradiation. We found that the photocatalytic activity of the RGO/CdS/TiO₂ step-scheme heterojunction was related to the proportion of TiO₂. A ternary sample with a TiO₂ content of 10 wt% exhibited superior photocatalytic performance, and approximately 99.7% of methylene blue was degraded during 50 min of visible illumination which was much higher than the percentages found for TiO₂, CdS, RGO/TiO₂, and RGO/CdS. The greatly improved photocatalytic performance is due to the exposure of the reactive {001} surface of TiO₂ and the formation of a CdS/TiO₂ heterojunction step-scheme, which effectively inhibits the recombination of charge carriers at the heterogeneous interfaces. Moreover, the incorporation of graphene further enhances the visible light harvesting and serves as an electron transport channel for rapidly separating photogenerated carriers. Based on the PL, XPS, photoelectrochemical properties and the free radical capturing experiment results, a possible photodegradation mechanism was proposed.

The photocatalytic enhancement of RGO/CdS/TiO₂ is due to the high-energy {001} surface of TiO₂ and CdS forming a stepped heterojunction, which is dispersed on the surface of reduced graphene oxide.
