Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Nigella sativa (NS) oil has been used as an ointment for relief from abscesses, nasal ulcers, orchitis, eczema, and swollen joints. The nutritional and biological values of wheat germ oil (WGO) are imperative points for testing its wound healing properties in traumatic ulcer. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the ability of NS versus WGO in promoting the healing of induced traumatic ulcer in albino rats clinically and histologically. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was carried out after the approval of the Research Ethics Committee (REC) of the Faculty of Dentistry, Suez Canal University, in Ismailia, Egypt, on 60 albino rats with induced labial ulcer according to calculated sample size. All animals were anaesthetized with an intraperitoneal injection of 10% ketamine. The ulcer was produced on the labial mucosa corresponding to the midline between the lower two incisors of each rat. After induction of the ulcer, rats were randomly divided into four groups according to the treatment medicament: Group A (negative control group): 15 rats which remained without treatment; Group B (positive control): 15 rats which received daily a topical application of 1 ml of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and lidocaine gel; Group C (NS group): 15 rats which received a daily topical application of 1 mm of NS oil painted by a brush covering the whole area of the ulcer; and Group D (WGO group): 15 rats which received 1 mm of WGO. The ulcers were measured using a digital caliper and were recorded using a digital camera at days 0, 3, 7, and 9, the largest (D) and smallest (d) diameters of the lesion were recorded, and the ulcer area was calculated using the following formula: A=π×D/2×d/2. Tissue samples were taken for histological examination, and the labial mucosa was dissected out and embedded in paraffin wax blocks. The blocks were cut with microtome to obtain sections of 4-5 μm thickness to be stained with hematoxylin and eosin stain and Masson's trichrome stain. All sections were examined under a light microscope, and the presence of inflammatory cells and collagen tissue remodeling were evaluated. RESULTS Within the control group, there are statistically non-significant changes in the mean of the surface area of ulcer when comparing changes in 10 rats who survived till the seventh day and inflammatory cell count when comparing changes in five rats who were sacrificed at the seventhday. There was a significant decrease in surface area and inflammatory cell count in five rats who survived till the ninth day. Within the WGO group only, all survived rats had healed ulcer at the ninth day. There is a significant decrease in inflammatory cell count in five rats who survived till the ninth day. CONCLUSION WGO was significantly more effective in the treatment of animal-induced ulcer compared to NS oil or CPC and lidocaine oral gel.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Considering the lack of studies investigating salivary substitutes to control post-radiation caries for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), this study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and anticaries effects of BioXtra® on the microcosm biofilm formed on different enamel types (non-irradiated and irradiated) and from distinct saliva sources (control and HNC patients). MATERIALS AND METHODS Non-irradiated and irradiated enamel specimens were treated with BioXtra®, phosphate-buffered-saline (PBS; negative control), or 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX; positive control) for 1 min. Biofilm was produced from human saliva (healthy participants with normal salivary flow for the control group or irradiated HNC patients with hyposalivation for the HNC group), mixed with McBain saliva, under 0.2% sucrose exposure, daily submitted to the treatments (1 min), for 5 days. Bacterial metabolic activity, biofilm viability, CFU counting, and enamel demineralization were determined. RESULTS BioXtra® significantly reduced the bacterial metabolic activity for both enamel types and the inoculum sources, being more effective for the irradiated enamel or for the saliva from the control group. Similarly, BioXtra® significantly reduced the biofilm viability, the CFU for total microorganisms, mutans streptococci, and lactobacilli, and was able to significantly reduce the mineral loss and the lesion depth compared to PBS. CHX was an effective treatment to significantly reduce all parameters, performing better than BioXtra® and reinforcing its reliable efficiency as a positive control. CONCLUSION Regardless of the enamel type and the inoculum source, BioXtra® presented antibacterial, antibiofilm, and anticaries effects under this experimental model, which should be confirmed in further clinical studies.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study is to identify the effectiveness of the four different watermelon frost combination medications in the treatment of oral ulcers through network meta-analysis and rank them based on their performances. Methods Five randomized controlled studies of four distinct types of a combination medication for the treatment of oral ulcers were observed in numerous databases, and a network meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the odds ratio (OR) and sequence of the diverse treatments using Stata software (version 13.0). The underlined studies were categorized into two groups: the control group (watermelon frost alone) and the observation group (one of four watermelon frost combinations). Results The study comprised of 598 cases and the findings indicated that the pooled OR and 95% CI of oral ulcers that improved relative to watermelon frost alone were 3.26 (1.28 to 8.30) for watermelon frost and Kangfuxin fluid, 8.74 (2.94 to 26.02) for watermelon frost and erythromycin, 6.53 (1.81 to 23.50) for watermelon frost and metronidazole, and 2.62 (0.63 to 10.95) for watermelon frost and cydiodine buccal tablets. The study showed the significant efficacy of watermelon frost combination medications. In terms of clinical efficacy, the combination of watermelon frost and erythromycin was the most promising concomitant medication. It had an 86.3 surface under cumulative ranking (SUCRA). Conclusion All the studied watermelon frost combinations were effective against oral ulcers validating the use of watermelon frost for oral ulcers. The combination of watermelon frost and erythromycin is the most promising candidate among the four combinations for the treatment of oral ulcers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim: To make a narrative assessment of the agents currently in use, with a particular emphasis on the topical agents that we frequently utilize in our practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS Materials and methods: The main method of this work is a review of literary sources. We reviewed the literature (PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus) to support and explain the interventions we use in different cases of oral mucositis patients. We decided to combine our experience with evidence-based data. CONCLUSION Conclusions: Topical treatments alleviate and prevent oral mucositis. Topical medicines can assist maintain oral balance and moistness by modulating oral bacteria and replacing saliva.

Abstract
Background and Aim The use of drugs as a therapy for traumatic ulcers may lead to drug resistance and other side effects. Lactobacillus casei Shirota can affect the number of fibroblasts and blood vessels in wound healing. The aim of this study was to investigate the difference in the number of fibroblast cells and blood vessels after the topical and systemic administration of L. casei Shirota probiotics in Wistar rats with traumatic ulcer. Materials and Methods Overall, 36 healthy male Wistar rats aged 2-3 months old and weighing 175-250 g in body weight were used as a sample. Traumatic ulcer was made on the labial fornix incisive inferior. The subject rats were divided into groups: (1) A control group over 3 days, (2) a group that used distilled water over 7 days, (3) a group that underwent topical treatment over 3 days, (4) a group that used probiotics administered topically over 7 days, (5) a group that underwent systemic treatment over 3 days, and (6) a group that took oral probiotics for the traumatic ulcers over 7 days. The number of fibroblasts and blood vessels was observed through a hematoxylin-eosin examination. Results Based on the results of the study, a significant difference was observed in the number of fibroblasts (p=0.00) and blood vessels (p=0.018) in the 3-day topical group that underwent a 3-day systemic administration of probiotics compared with the number of fibroblast cells in the 7-day topical group and 7-day systemic group (p=0.00). Conclusion Overall, significant differences were observed in the number of fibroblasts and blood vessels in Wistar rats with traumatic ulcer after undergoing the topical and systemic administration of L. casei Shirota probiotics.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVES In addition to its antimicrobial effect, doxycycline has potent anti-inflammatory activity. In view of these pharmacological characteristics, its use in the management of inflammatory, autoimmune and granulomatous diseases has been proposed. The objective of this study was to investigate, through a systematic literature review, the effect of doxycycline on pain and healing of ulcerated lesions of the mouth. METHODS An electronic search was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines in PubMed, Cochrane Central Register, Web of Science, Bireme/LILACS and Scopus databases. Controlled, randomized clinical trials were selected. The concentration of doxycycline, frequency of application, pain relief and clinical remission of the lesions were analysed. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION According to the inclusion criteria, five articles were selected. In four of these studies, doxycycline was used in the treatment of aphthous stomatitis, and in one study, it was used in the treatment of herpes labialis. In all studies, the drug was used topically, both as a hydrogel and as a crushed tablet (along with a prosthetic adhesive). The groups treated with doxycycline showed faster healing of lesions and lower pain scores compared to placebo. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION The present study suggests that topical doxycycline has a positive effect on the treatment of recurrent aphthous ulceration and herpes labialis. Experimental animal studies and double-blind randomized clinical trials should be performed on other oral lesions, such as traumatic ulcers and mucositis.
