Abstract
Recently, omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFAs) have gained substantial interest due to their specific structure and biological functions. Humans cannot naturally produce these fatty acids (FAs), making it crucial to obtain them from our diet. This comprehensive review details n-3 LC-PUFAs and their role in promoting and maintaining optimal health. The article thoroughly analyses several sources of n-3 LC-PUFAs and their respective bioavailability, covering marine, microbial and plant-based sources. Furthermore, we provide an in-depth analysis of the biological impacts of n-3 LC-PUFAs on health conditions, with particular emphasis on cardiovascular disease (CVD), gastrointestinal (GI) cancer, diabetes, depression, arthritis, and cognition. In addition, we highlight the significance of fortification and supplementation of n-3 LC-PUFAs in both functional foods and dietary supplements. Additionally, we conducted a detailed analysis of the several kinds of n-3 LC-PUFAs supplements currently available in the market, including an assessment of their recommended intake, safety, and effectiveness. The dietary guidelines associated with n-3 LC-PUFAs are also highlighted, focusing on the significance of maintaining a well-balanced intake of n-3 PUFAs to enhance health benefits. Lastly, we highlight future directions for further research in this area and their potential implications for public health.

Abstract
Purpose Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is a promising and significant measure for the treatment of tumors. However, the internal situation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is complex, separate SDT treatment is difficult to play a good therapeutic effect. Here, we used SDT combined with MG-132 to mediate apoptosis and autophagy of HCC cells to achieve the purpose of treatment of cancer. Methods To determine the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the change of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), HepG2 cells were stained by 2,7-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) and 5,5',6,6'-Tetrachloro-1,1',3,3'-tetraethyl-imidacarbocyanine iodide (JC-1) staining to determine the IR-820@NBs-mediated SDT to achieve HCC therapy through the mitochondrial pathway. Cell counting kit 8 (CCK-8) assay and flow cytometry were used to detect cell viability and apoptosis rate of HepG2 cells. Autophagy was detected by mCherry-GFP-LC3B fluorescence labeling. Chloroquine (Cq) pretreatment was used to explore the relationship between autophagy and apoptosis. To detect the ability of HepG2 cells migration and invasion, cell scratch assay and transwell assay were used. Results The successfully prepared IR-820@NBs could effectively overcome the shortcomings of IR-820 and induce lethal levels of ROS by ultrasound irradiation. As a dual agonist of apoptosis and autophagy, MG-132 could effectively enhance the efficacy of SDT in the process of treating HCC. After pre-treatment with Cq, the cell activity increased and the level of apoptosis decreased, which proved that apoptosis and autophagy were induced by combined therapy, autophagy, and apoptosis have the synergistic anti-tumor effect, and part of apoptosis was autophagy-dependent. After combined therapy, the activity and invasive ability of HCC cells decreased significantly. Conclusion SDT combined with MG-132 in the process of treating liver cancer could effectively induce apoptosis and autophagy anti-tumor therapy, which is helpful to the research of new methods to treat liver cancer.

Abstract
Dietary nutrition intake is essential for human beings and influences various physiological and pathological actions in the human body. Among various nutritional factors, dietary intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been shown to have various beneficial effects against inflammatory diseases. In addition to their therapeutic potency against inflammation, omega-3 PUFAs have also been shown to have anti-tumor effects via various mechanisms, such as cell arrest and apoptosis. To date, limited information is available on these effects in cutaneous malignancies. In this review, we focused on the effect of omega-3 PUFAs on skin cancers, especially malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, lymphoma, and squamous cell carcinoma and discussed the detailed molecular mechanism of the omega-3 PUFA-mediated anti-tumor response. We also explored the molecular mechanisms mediated by epigenetic modifications, cell adhesion molecules, and anti-tumor immune responses.

Abstract
Vegetable oils have their specific physicochemical properties due to which they are playing vital role in human nutritional diet for health benefits. Cottonseed oil is obtained from various species of cotton seeds that are famous to be grown mainly for their fiber quality. The most prominently used specie is Gossypium hirsutum. It is obvious that the seeds of different variety of cotton vary as grown in diverse agroclimatic conditions with respect to oil, fats and protein contents. Cottonseed oil is routinely used for cooking and food manufacturing products. Cottonseed oil obtained after proper extraction/processing steps from crude state to refined oil in a variety of ways. Cotton crop is considered for their dual-use purpose, for fiber quality and oil production to promote health benefits in the world. Keeping in view the above facts, this review clearly demonstrated an overview about physicochemical and functional properties of cottonseed oil to promote health benefits associated with the use of this oil. The overall characteristics and all concerned health benefits of CSO will further improve their usefulness is a compact way. We have summarized a brief multi-dimensional features of CSO in all aspects up to the best of our knowledge for the end researchers who can further research in the respective aspect.

Abstract
The group of conjugated fatty acids known as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers have been extensively studied with regard to their bioactive potential in treating some of the most prominent human health malignancies. However, CLA isomers are not the only group of potentially bioactive conjugated fatty acids currently undergoing study. In this regard, isomers of conjugated α-linolenic acid, conjugated nonadecadienoic acid and conjugated eicosapentaenoic acid, to name but a few, have undergone experimental assessment. These studies have indicated many of these conjugated fatty acid isomers commonly possess anti-carcinogenic, anti-adipogenic, anti-inflammatory and immune modulating properties, a number of which will be discussed in this review. The mechanisms through which these bioactivities are mediated have not yet been fully elucidated. However, existing evidence indicates that these fatty acids may play a role in modulating the expression of several oncogenes, cell cycle regulators, and genes associated with energy metabolism. Despite such bioactive potential, interest in these conjugated fatty acids has remained low relative to the CLA isomers. This may be partly attributed to the relatively recent emergence of these fatty acids as bioactives, but also due to a lack of awareness regarding sources from which they can be produced. In this review, we will also highlight the common sources of these conjugated fatty acids, including plants, algae, microbes and chemosynthesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Despite advances in chemotherapeutic agents and surgical approaches for its management, gastrointestinal cancer still accounts for 27% of new cancer cases and 35% of cancer related mortality worldwide. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities and are used as immuno-nutrients. METHODS A literature search was conducted to identify primary research reporting on applications of the omega-3 PUFAs in gastrointestinal cancer. RESULTS Reported laboratory studies indicate a clear role for omega-3 PUFAs in preventing cancer development at various stages including cancer cell proliferation, survival, angiogenesis, inflammation and metastasis. In clinical settings, omega-3 PUFAs have been reported to improve the immune response, maintain lean body mass, improve quality of life and improve overall survival in patients with colorectal and pancreatic cancer. In contrast to other GI cancers, there is a strong connection between inflammation and oesophageal cancer. CONCLUSIONS Little work has been done exploring the role for omega-3 PUFAs in oesophageal cancer prevention and management. The authors are conducting a clinical trial investigating the use of parenteral omega-3 PUFAs supplementary to the standard of care (epirubicin, oxaliplatin and capecitabine palliative chemotherapy) in patients with advanced oesophagogastric cancer as a promising new therapeutic approach.

Abstract
We examined the effect of a high-fat diet from senescence as a means of preventing malnutrition among the elderly. The senescence-accelerated mouse P8 was used and divided into three groups. The 6C group was given a normal diet until 6 months old. The 12N group was given a normal diet until 12 months old. The 12F group was given a normal diet until 6 months old and then a high-fat diet until 12 months old. In the oral fat tolerance test, there was a decrease in area under the curve for serum triacylglycerol level in the 12N group and a significant increase in the 12F group, suggesting that the attenuation of lipid absorption ability with aging was delayed by a high-fat diet from senescence. To examine this mechanism, histological analysis in the small intestine was performed. As a result, the degeneration of villi with aging was inhibited by the high-fat diet. There was also a significant decrease in length of villus in the small intestine in the 12N group and a significant increase in the 12F group. The high-fat diet from senescence inhibited the degeneration of villi with aging in the small intestine, and inhibited the attenuation of lipid absorption ability.

Abstract
Abstract
In this study, the physiological effects of fatty acids with conjugated double bonds were widely examined in vitro and in vivo. Initially, a method for determination of conjugated fatty acids in food and biological samples was established. I then clarified that the oxidative stability of conjugated fatty acids was improved by the form of triacylglycerol and addition of an antioxidant, and the influence of this effect on the metabolism and pharmacokinetics of conjugated fatty acids was clarified in vivo. In addition, antitumor, anti-angiogenesis, and antiobesity effects of conjugated fatty acids were found for the first time, thus demonstrating the usefulness of conjugated fatty acids. This communication mainly outlines the data obtained for conjugated linolenic acid. In addition, this review summarizes my research on conjugated fatty acid.

Abstract
Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (CCC) is a histological type of epithelial ovarian cancer that is less responsive to chemotherapy and associated with a poorer prognosis than serous and endometrioid carcinoma. Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma which produces reactive species has recently led to an explosion of research in plasma medicine. Plasma treatment can be applied to cancer treatment to induce apoptosis and tumor growth arrest. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that a medium exposed to plasma also has an anti-proliferative effect against cancer in the absence of direct exposure to plasma. In this study, we confirmed whether this indirect plasma has an anti-tumor effect against CCC, and investigated whether this efficacy is selective for cancer cells. Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma induced apoptosis in CCC cells, while human peritoneal mesothelial cells remained viable. Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma exhibits selective cytotoxicity against CCC cells which are resistant to chemotherapy.

Abstract
Malnutrition due to aging is partly caused by decreased absorption of nutrients by the gastrointestinal tract. However, the underlying mechanism is unclear and changes in lipid absorption with aging are poorly understood. In this study, changes in lipid absorption with aging were examined in mice aged 3 and 25 months. After overnight fasting, blood samples were collected from snipped tails and then soybean oil was administered orally. Three hours later, mice were sacrificed by decapitation and the liver, pancreas, small intestine and blood were collected. The increase in serum triacylglycerol after soybean oil administration was significantly lower in the older mice, indicating a decrease in lipid absorption with aging. Measurement of mRNA levels for triacylglycerol absorption-related genes showed that mRNA for pancreatic lipase tended to decrease in 25-month-old mice. There was no significant difference in the protein level of pancreatic lipase, but the enzyme activity showed a significant decrease in the older mice. To examine this mechanism, expression levels of mRNA for protein turnover-related genes in the pancreas were measured. The level of a proteasomal mRNA showed a significant decrease in 25-month-old mice. This suggests that the ability to degrade unfolded protein decreases in the aging pancreas, and that this leads to reduction of pancreatic lipase activity and a decrease in lipid absorption.

The levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), a biomarker of lipid peroxidation, were measured in plasma and liver in ApoE(-/-) mice aged 12 weeks (young) and 52 weeks (early stage of senescence). TBARS in plasma and liver were significantly increased by aging. Next, we examined the reasons why lipid peroxidation was promoted by aging, based on measurement of protein and mRNA levels for antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) in liver in ApoE(-/-) mice aged 12 and 52 weeks. The levels of superoxide dismutase 1 and 2 in liver were significantly decreased by aging. The mRNA level of catalase was also significantly decreased and the mRNA levels of superoxide dismutase 1, superoxide dismutase 2 and glutathione peroxidase 1 all showed a tendency to decrease with age. These results suggest that lipid peroxidation is caused by reduction of antioxidant activity with aging and that this promotes senescence and shortens lifespan in ApoE(-/-) mice.

Abstract
The anti-cancer activity of vanadium and fish oil has been shown in a large number of studies. This study was undertaken to analyze the combined effect of vanadium and fish oil on 7,12-dimethylbenz(α)anthracene (DMBA)-induced mammary carcinogenesis in female Sprague-Dawley rats. The whole experiment was divided into three parts: (1) DNA strand breaks study, (2) morphological analysis, and (3) histological and immunohistochemical study. Rats were treated with DMBA (0.5 mg/0.2 ml corn oil/100 g body weight) by a tail vein injection. Rats received vanadium (w/v) as ammonium monovanadate at a concentration of 0.5 ppm (4.27 µmol/L) in the drinking water and given ad libitum and/or fish oil (0.5 ml/day/rat) by oral gavage. Histology, morphology, DNA strand breaks, cell proliferation, and apoptosis of the mammary tissue were assessed in this study. Treatment with vanadium or fish oil alone significantly reduced the DNA strand breaks, palpable mammary tumors, tumor multiplicity, and cell proliferation but the maximum protection effect was found in the group that received both vanadium and fish oil and the combination treatment offered an additive effect (P < 0.05). Furthermore, vanadium and fish oil significantly increased the TUNEL-positive apoptotic cells (P < 0.05) but the increase was maximal with combination treatment and had an additive effect. These results affirm the benefits of administration of vanadium and fish oil in the prevention of rat mammary carcinogenesis which was associated with reduced DNA strand breaks, palpable mammary tumors and cell proliferation and increased TUNEL-positive apoptotic cells.

Abstract
Various factors have been reported to influence lipid metabolism and cause metabolic syndrome. However, the influence of allergy on the liver that plays important role of lipid metabolism has not been clarified. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of allergy on lipid metabolism of liver. A model of atopic dermatitis was developed in the NC/Nga mouse using picryl chloride to induce allergy. Lipid metabolism parameters were measured and the mechanism of changes in these parameters was examined using DNA microarray analysis and quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR. Triacylglycerol accumulation was promoted in the liver in the mouse atopic dermatitis model despite reductions in food intake, body weight gain, and serum glucose. As this mechanism, it was thought that atopic dermatitis caused the suppression of fatty acid β-oxidation. These results suggest that atopic dermatitis causes lipid accumulation in the liver.

Abstract
Lipid metabolism in a child may be altered when the mother has a high-fat diet (HFD), but it is unclear whether the lipid metabolism of future offspring (grandchildren) is also changed under these circumstances. In this study, we examined the influence of intake of an HFD beyond one generation on offspring in normal mice. Parent mice fed an HFD were bred and the resultant second and third generations were also fed an HFD. The diets used in the study had approximately 20% more energy than a standard chow diet. Changes in lipid metabolism were examined in each generation. Intake of an HFD from generation to generation promoted lipid accumulation in the white adipose tissue of female mice, increased lipid, glucose and insulin levels in the serum, increased the activities of enzymes associated with fatty acid metabolism in the liver, promoted lipid accumulation in hepatocytes and adipocytes and increased the mRNA levels of Cdkn1a in the liver and white adipose tissue. These results suggest that activation of Cdkn1a promoted lipid accumulation in the liver and white adipose tissue of third-generation female mice that were offspring from earlier generations fed HFDs. Moreover, intake of a high-energy diet beyond one generation led to offspring with obesity, fatty liver and hyperinsulinemia.

Abstract
The bioactive properties of the conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers have long been recognised and are the subject of a number of excellent reviews. However, despite this prominence the CLA isomers are not the only group of naturally occurring dietary conjugated fatty acids which have shown potent bioactivity. In a large number of in vitro and in vivo studies, conjugated α-linolenic acid (CLNA) isomers have displayed potent anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anti-obese and anti-carcinogenic activity, along with the ability to improve biomarkers of cardio-vascular health. CLNA isomers are naturally present in high concentrations in a large variety of seed oils but can also be produced in vitro by strains of lactobacilli and bifidobactena through the activity of the enzyme linoleic acid isomerase on α-linolenic acid. In this review, we will address the possible therapeutic roles that CLNA may play in a number of conditions afflicting Western society and the mechanisms through which this activity is mediated.

Abstract
It was recently shown that administration of 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) extracted from mulberry suppresses an increase in postprandial blood glucose in humans. These findings are of interest, but other physiological functions of DNJ are unknown. This study examined the effects of oral administration of DNJ (1 mg/kg of body weight/day) or mulberry extracts enriched in DNJ (meDNJ; 100 or 200 mg of extract/kg of body weight/day, equivalent to 0.53 or 1.06 mg of DNJ/kg of body weight/day) in male Sprague-Dawley rats for 4 weeks. DNJ and meDNJ enhanced expression of adiponectin mRNA in white adipose tissue; increased plasma adiponectin levels, enhanced expression of AMPK mRNA, activated the beta-oxidation system, and suppressed lipid accumulation in the liver. Intake of DNJ and meDNJ did not cause hepatic dysfunction and led to a reduction of oxidative stress. These results indicate the efficacy and safety of DNJ and meDNJ.

Abstract
The plasma membranes of all eukaryotic cells contain heterogeneous self-organising intrinsically unstable liquid ordered domains or lipid assemblies in which key signal transduction proteins are localised. These assemblies are classified as 'lipid rafts' (10-200 nm), which are composed mostly of cholesterol and sphingolipid microdomains and therefore do not integrate well into the fluid phospholipid bilayers. In addition, caveolae represent a subtype of lipid raft macrodomain that form flask-shaped membrane invaginations containing structural proteins, i.e. caveolins. With respect to the diverse biological effects of long-chain PUFA, increasing evidence suggests that n-3 PUFA and perhaps conjugated fatty acids uniquely alter the basic properties of cell membranes. Because of its polyunsaturation, DHA and possibly conjugated linoleic acid are sterically incompatible with sphingolipid and cholesterol and, therefore, appear to alter lipid raft behaviour and protein function. The present review examines the evidence indicating that dietary sources of n-3 PUFA can profoundly alter the biochemical make up of lipid rafts/caveolae microdomains, thereby influencing cell signalling, protein trafficking and cell cytokinetics.

Abstract
The anti-angiogenic effects of conjugated docosahexaenoic acid (CDHA), which was prepared by an alkaline treatment of docosahexaenoic acid and contained conjugated double bonds, were investigated in vitro and in vivo. CDHA inhibited tube formation by the bovine aortic endothelial cell (BAEC), and also inhibited the proliferation of BAEC at a concentration of CDHA that suppressed tube formation, but did not influence cell migration. The inhibition of BAEC growth caused by CDHA was accompanied by a marked change in cellular morphology. Nuclear condensation and brightness were observed in Hoechst 33342-stained cells treated with CDHA, indicating that CDHA induced apoptosis in BAEC. We also evaluated the angiogenesis inhibition of CDHA in vivo. The vessel formation which was triggered by tumor cells was clearly suppressed in mice orally given CDHA. Our findings suggest that CDHA has potential use as a therapeutic dietary supplement for minimizing tumor angiogenesis.

Abstract
Antiangiogenic therapy using drugs and food components is a recognized strategy for the prevention of various angiogenesis-mediated disorders such as tumor growth, diabetic retinopathy, and rheumatoid arthritis. Our preliminary cell culture studies, using both bovine aortic endothelial cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) on screening for food-derived antiangiogenic compounds, showed tocotrienol (T3), an unsaturated version of vitamin E, to be a potential angiogenic inhibitor. We therefore investigaged the in vivo antiangiogenic properties of T3 using 2 well-characterized angiogenic models [mouse dorsal air sac (DAS) assay and the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay]. In the DAS assay, the increased neovascularization (angiogenesis index, 4.8 +/- 0.6) in tumor cell-implanted mice was suppressed (angiogenesis index, 2.7 +/- 0.6) by dietary supplementation of 10 mg T3-rich oil/d (equivalent to 4.4 mg T3/d). In the CAM assay, T3 (500-1000 microg/egg) inhibited new blood vessel formation on the growing CAM and increased the frequency of avascular zone (36-50%). To evaluate the antiangiogenic mechanism, we conducted cell-culture studies and found that T3 significantly reduced fibroblast growth factor -induced proliferation, migration, and tube formation in HUVEC (P < 0.05), with delta-T3 having the highest activity. Western blot analysis revealed that delta-T3 suppressed the phosphorylation of phosophoinositide-dependent protein kinase (PDK) and Akt, and increased the phosphorylation of apoptosis signal-regulating kinase and p38 in fibroblast growth factor-treated HUVEC, indicating that the antiangiogenic effects of T3 are associated with changes in growth factor-dependent phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase /PDK/Akt signaling as well as induction of apoptosis in endothelial cells. Our findings suggest that T3 has potential as a therapeutic dietary supplement for preventing angiogenic disorders, and therefore future clinical study will be required to evaluate the efficacy and safety of T3.
