Abstract
INTRODUCTION The number of new cancer cases among older adults is rising, yet their social support needs remain unmet due to diminishing social networks with age. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, online technologies have provided increased opportunities for social support for this demographic via digital platforms such as online peer support groups, online communities, and chat rooms. This scoping review explores the current state of the use of online social support for older adults with cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS This scoping review was based on the Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework with the extension proposed by Levac and colleagues. The protocol was registered on Open Science Framework (OSF). PubMed, Elsevier Embase (including Medline), and EBSCO CINAHL Complete were searched to identify eligible studies. The review findings were presented in a narrative synthesis. RESULTS Out of 6542 references, we included three studies. Two studies investigated older patients' preferences for different types of peer support through surveys and questionnaires, and the third examined the feasibility of an online platform for older women with breast cancer. Barriers identified include a lower interest and familiarity, sense of involvement, and emotional impact of a new diagnosis. However, factors such as socio-demographic characteristics and positive motivation for using online peer support act as facilitators. DISCUSSION This scoping review is the first to examine the literature on online social support specifically for older adults with cancer, revealing a paucity of research. Further research is required to understand the potential need and interest in online social support for this population, especially as technology becomes more integrated into daily life post-COVID.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In today's fast-paced society, stress has become a widespread phenomenon, garnering increasing attention for its impact on cancer. This study aims to investigate the current status and research hotspots of chronic stress in cancer research from 2014 to 2024, with the goal of providing valuable insights for future studies. METHODS We retrieved 618 articles published between 2014 and 2024 from the Web of Science database and analyzed them using R software, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. RESULTS There is an overall upward trend in chronic stress-related cancer research, with China leading in publications, followed by the United States, India, Australia, and Italy. The journal most cited is Brain Behavior and Immunity. Key themes identified include 'inflammation', 'breast cancer', 'anxiety', 'psychological stress', and 'oxidative stress'. The primary focus of the research is the impact of chronic stress on various cancer types, the underlying molecular mechanisms, and the implications of chronic stress-related treatments on cancer outcomes. CONCLUSION Chronic stress is increasingly recognized as a Carcinogenic factors. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of chronic stress-related cancer research from 2014 to 2024, offering valuable guidance for future research in this field.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The estimated number of new cases among older adults with cancer has been increasing. Considering the decrease in social networks as adults age, their need for social support is often unmet. Notably, an increasing number of older adults with cancer have access to social support through online technologies, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, which heightened the need for online social support. Little is known, however, about the extent to which online social support for older people with cancer has developed. This scoping review aims to explore the developments in online social support for older adults with cancer. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We will search PubMed, Elsevier Embase (including Medline) and EBSCO CINAHL Complete to identify eligible studies based on predefined criteria. Screening of articles and data extraction will be carried out independently by two reviewers, with conflicts resolved by a third reviewer. This scoping review will be based on the Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework with the extension proposed by Levac and colleagues. The review findings will be presented in a narrative analysis using tables. This protocol is registered on Open Science Framework at https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/Z9XJ7. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION No ethical approval is needed. The findings will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and presented at conferences.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the comprehensive needs of lung cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors and to explore the relationships between comprehensive needs and social support and disease perception, moreover, to analyse associated factors of comprehensive needs. METHODS The study was conducted in a teaching hospital in Jiaxing Province, China. A total of 141 patients with lung cancer completed a battery of self-report questionnaires, including the Comprehensive Needs Assessment Tool in Cancer for Patients (CNAT), Social Supportive Rating Scale (SSRS), Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ), and demographic and clinical characteristics questionnaire. RESULTS The level of comprehensive needs was highest in the domain "medical demand" (42.17 ± 26.57), and the item with the highest level of comprehensive needs was "I need information about the financial support for my medical expenses" (2.00 ± 1.07). Statistically significant correlations were identified between the comprehensive needs score, social support, and disease perception. The multiple regression analysis showed that immunotherapy course, whether irAEs occur, social support, and disease perception were factors influencing patients' comprehensive needs. CONCLUSIONS The most prevalent needs in lung cancer patients were found in the "medical needs" domain. Additionally, immunotherapy course, whether irAEs occur, disease perception, and social support were associated with comprehensive needs among lung cancer patients. It is essential to combine the associated factors to accurately evaluate patient needs. We should pay more attention to proposing the comprehensive measures for these patients and providing more individualized supportive care during the lengthy treatment period.

Abstract
The involvement of psychological stress and Natural Killer T (NKT) cells in the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis has been identified in the progression of this disease. Psychological stress can impact disease occurrence, relapse, and severity through its effects on the Hypothalamic- Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis and immune responses. NKT cells are believed to play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis, with recent evidence suggesting their distinct functional alterations following activation of the HPA axis under conditions of psychological stress. This review summarizes the associations between psychological stress, NKT cells, and multiple sclerosis while discussing the potential mechanism for how NKT cells mediate the effects of psychological stress on this disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mice hemizygous in tyrosine hydroxylase (TH-HZ), the limiting enzyme in catecholamine synthesis, show premature immunosenescence, which in females is associated with a shorter lifespan than the corresponding controls (WT). The coexistence of TH-Hz with WT improves the immune function in both males and females in adulthood. OBJECTIVE To test whether cohabitation for two months of mature male TH-HZ with WT improves the immune function of the former and whether this impacts the lifespan. MATERIAL AND METHODS Mature male ICR-CD1 mice (13 ± 1 months) TH-HZ coexisted with WT (2:4 ratio in each cage) for two months. Peritoneal leukocytes were extracted from all animals at baseline, one month, and two months after cohabitation, and macrophage phagocytic capacity, macrophage and lymphocyte chemotaxis, natural killer (NK) antitumor activity, and lymphoproliferative capacity in response to the mitogens concanavalin A and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were assessed. The animals were maintained under these conditions until their natural death. RESULTS The TH-HZ, which start, in general, with lower values than the WT in the immune functions studied, improved them after two months of cohabitation, becoming similar to those of the controls. This improvement was already observed in NK activity after one month of cohabitation. The TH-HZ presented lower mean longevity than WT, but when they cohabited with WT, it was similar to the latter. CONCLUSION The coexistence of TH-HZ male mice with WT mice for two months at mature age improves these genetically modified animals' immune response and longevity.

Abstract
Advances in the understanding of psychoneuroimmunology in the past decade have emphasized the notion that stress and cancer are interlinked closely. Durable chronic stress accelerated tumorigenesis and progression, which is unfavorable for clinical outcomes of cancer patients. Available evidence has provided unprecedented knowledge about the role and mechanisms of chronic stress in carcinogenesis, the most well-known one is dysfunction of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). With abnormal activation of neuroendocrine system, stress-related hormones contribute to increased oncogenes expression, exacerbated chronic inflammation and impaired immunologic function. In addition, accumulating studies have demonstrated that diverse stress interventions including pharmacological approaches, physical exercises and psychological relaxation have been administered to assist in mental disorders reduction and life quality improvement in cancer patients. In this review, we systematically summarize the connection and mechanisms in the stress-immune-cancer axis identified by animal and clinical studies, as well as conclude the effectiveness and deficiencies of existing stress management strategies.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare disease free survival experienced by women who received usual oncologic care compared to a cohort of women who received naturopathic oncology care in addition to usual care. METHODS Women with breast cancer who received naturopathic oncology (NO) care in Western Washington State (WA) (N = 176) were recruited to a prospective study of clinical health-related quality of life outcomes and then matched to women who received usual care (UC) only (N = 334). RESULTS Among 510 women with breast cancer stages 1 to 3, a total of 50 women (10%) experienced a disease-free survival (DFS) ending event within the observation period; 23 (6.8% of those in the UC cohort, and 27 (15.3% of those in the NO cohort (P < .05). Although, women in the 2 cohorts received similar surgical, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment, women with breast cancer who received naturopathic oncology adjunctive care were less likely to use anti-estrogen therapy, and experienced poorer DFS (logrank test, P < .05). However, differences in DFS could not be shown to be due to cohort differences in anti-estrogen therapy, baseline HRQOL, or naturopathic oncology therapies prescribed. The stage 3 women in the naturopathic oncology group had more advanced disease at diagnosis. They were more likely to have 5 or more metastatic lymph nodes at baseline (18.5%) compared to their usual care matched control group (13%). Women in the naturopathic oncology group also had higher grade tumors at diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS Results show that recurrence of breast cancer was associated with more advanced malignant lymph node involvement; and that naturopathic oncology services provided in 2009-2015 did not improve disease-free survival in these high-risk breast cancer patients.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of iNKT (human invariant natural killer T) cells with the key marker of ovarian cancer (OC) - CA125 (cancer antigen125) in serum. The study reports the assessment of iNKT cells in peripheral blood and tissue of benign and borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) and in the advanced-stage ovarian cancer. The study groups were as follows: 25 women with benign ovarian tumors, 11 women with BOTs, and 24 women with primary advanced-stage ovarian cancers. The control group consisted of 20 patients without the ovarian pathology. The rates of iNKT lymphocytes in the peripheral blood and tissue specimens were evaluated by a flow cytometry. Significant differences in the percentage of iNKT+/CD3+ of CD3+ lymphocytes, iNKT+/CD3+/CD161+ among CD3+ and iNKT+/CD3+/CD161+ among CD3+/iNKT+ between the control group and patients with ovarian tumors in the peripheral blood and tumor tissue were identified. Significant correlations were noticed between the proportion of lymphocytes iNKT+/CD3+/CD161+ among CD3+/iNKT cells in blood and in cancer tissue of both benign and malignant tumors. In the OC group, neither the ratio of iNKT cells in the blood (P = 0.07), nor the intra-tumor NKT-cell infiltration (P = 0.5) were independent prognostic factors for the follow-up. An increased rate of iNKT cells was detected in benign ovarian tumors compared to OCs. In patients with ovarian cancer, a higher rate of iNKT cells in tumor tissue was present related to that noted in the patient's blood. In addition, a correlation was discovered between the CA125 serum marker and NKT cells from the ovarian cancer tissue. This article has for the first time demonstrated a negative relationship between serum levels and NKT lymphocyte count from ovarian tissue. The inflammatory process in ovarian cancer tissue and the potential infiltration of endothelial immune cells, may result in a reduced number of NKT cells in the tumor microenvironment and increased circulation of the CA125 marker. Presented findings underscore new aspects of the iNKT cells involvement in the ovarian cancer development.

Abstract
The social environment can influence the functional capacity of nervous and immune systems, and consequently the state of health, especially in aged individuals. Adult female tyrosine hydroxylase haploinsufficient (TH-HZ) mice exhibit behavioral impairments, premature immunosenescence and oxidative- inflammatory stress. All these deteriorations are associated with a lower lifespan than wild type (WT) counterparts. The aim was to analyze whether the cohabitation with WT animals could revert or at least ameliorate the deterioration in the nervous and immune systems that female TH-HZ mice show at adult age. Female TH-HZ and WT mice at age of 3-4 weeks were divided into following groups: control TH-HZ (5 TH-HZ mice in the cage; TH-HZ100%), control WT (5 WT mice in the cage; WT100%), TH-HZ > 50% and WT < 50% (5 TH-HZ with 2 WT mice in each cage) as well as TH-HZ < 50% and WT > 50% (2 TH-HZ and 5 WT mice in each cage). At the age of 37-38 weeks, all mice were submitted to a battery of behavioral tests, evaluating sensorimotor abilities, exploratory capacities and anxiety-like behaviors. Subsequently, peritoneal leukocytes were extracted and several immune functions as well as oxidative and inflammatory stress parameters were analyzed. The results showed that the TH-HZ < 50% group had improved behavioral responses, especially anxiety-like behaviors, and the immunosenescence and oxidative stress of their peritoneal leukocytes were ameliorated. However, WT mice that cohabited with TH-HZ mice presented higher anxiety-like behaviors and deterioration in immune functions and in their inflammatory stress parameters. Thus, this social environment is capable of ameliorating the impairments associated with a haploinsufficiency of the th gene. Graphical Abstract.

Abstract
Older adults with cancer have increasing needs in physical, cognitive, and emotional domains, and they can experience decline in all domains with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Social support plays a key role in supporting these patients, mitigating negative effects of diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and improving cancer outcomes. We review the importance of social support in older adults with cancer, describe the different components of social support and how they are measured, discuss current interventions that are available to improve social support in older adults, and describe burdens on caregivers. We also highlight Dr. Arti Hurria's contributions to recognizing the integral role of social support to caring for older adults with cancer.

Abstract
Mounting preclinical and clinical evidence continues to support a role for the neuroendocrine system in the modulation of tumor biology and progression. Several studies have shown data supporting a link between chronic stress and cancer progression. Dysregulation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis has been implicated in promoting angiogenesis, tumor cell proliferation and survival, alteration of the immune response and exacerbating inflammatory networks in the tumor microenvironment. Here, we review how SNS and HPA dysregulation contributes to disturbances in immune cell populations, modifies cancer biology, and impacts immunotherapy response. We also highlight several interventions aimed at circumventing the adverse effects stress has on cancer patients.

Abstract
The range of psychosocial stress factors/processes (eg, chronic stress, distress states, coping, social adversity) were reviewed as they relate to immune variables in cancer along with studies of psychosocial interventions on these stress processes and immune measures in cancer populations. The review includes molecular, cellular, and clinical research specifically examining the effects of stress processes and stress-management interventions on immune variables (eg, cellular immune function, inflammation), which may or may not be changing directly in response to the cancer or its treatment. Basic psychoneuroimmunologic research on stress processes (using animal or cellular/tumor models) provides leads for investigating biobehavioral processes that may underlie the associations reported to date. The development of theoretically driven and empirically supported stress-management interventions may provide important adjuncts to clinical cancer care going forward.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have demonstrated an association between social support and lower morbidity and mortality. Delay in seeking medical care is associated with poor health outcomes. The relationship between social support and delay in seeking medical care has not been established. We sought to determine whether lack of social support is associated with higher rates of delays in seeking needed medical care. METHODS This is a cross-sectional observational study using data from the 2013 and 2014 Centers for Disease Control Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Participants who were asked questions about delays in medical care and social support were included. The primary outcome was a self-reported delay in seeking needed medical care. The primary independent variable of interest was a dichotomised measure of social support. Multivariable logistic regression was performed, adjusting for demographics, socioeconomic status, comorbidities and access to care. RESULTS Participants without social support were more likely to report delaying needed medical care when compared with participants with social support (38%vs19%, p<0.001). The association between lack of social support and delays in care persisted after adjustment for demographics, socioeconomic status, comorbidities and access to care (OR 1.72; 95% CI 1.45 to 2.06; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Lack of perceived social support is associated with patient-reported delay of needed medical care. This association may contribute to the poor health outcomes experienced by those with a lack of social support.

Abstract
This study aimed at evaluating the functional activation and activating receptors expression on resting, short- and long-term NK and NK-like T cells from blood of ovarian neoplasia patients. Blood from patients with adnexal benign alterations (n = 10) and ovarian cancer (grade I-IV n = 14) were collected after signed consent. Effector cells activation was evaluated by the expression of the CD107a molecule. Short-term culture was conducted overnight with IL-2 and long-term culture for 21 days, by a method designed to expand CD56(+) lymphocytes. Short-term culture significantly increased NK cells activation compared to resting NK cells (p<0.05), however, the long-term procedure supported an even higher increase (p<0.001). Resting NK-like T cells showed poor activation, which was not altered by the culture procedures. The long-term culture effectively increased the expression of the activating receptors on NK and NK-like T cells, either by increasing the number of cells expressing a given receptor and/or by up-regulating their expression intensity. As a conclusion, the long-term culture system employed, resulted in a high number of functional NK cells. The culture system was particularly efficient on the up-regulation of NKp30 and DNAM-1 receptors on NK cells.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to (1) explore the needs of cancer patients regarding common nursing professional social support from the perspective of physicians and nurses, (2) identify what type of needs clinical nurses actually fulfill and what remains to be improved, and (3) analyze the potential reasons for the gap between the identified needs and those that are fulfilled. METHODS A qualitative approach using focus group interviews was adopted to explore the perception and provision of cancer patients' needs regarding nursing professional social support. A purposive sample of 32 health care professionals was recruited from two teaching hospitals in Anhui province, China. Five focus group interviews were conducted and all interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim. A content analysis was performed with the data. RESULTS The healthcare professionals perceived various nursing professional support needs of cancer patients; these include informational, emotional/psychological, and technical support needs; the mobilization of social resources; and palliative care during certain stages. The findings also indicated that there are still many unmet needs, especially needs related to the mobilization of social resources and palliative care. The reasons for the deficiencies in the fulfillment of these needs varied and included both subjective and objective aspects, such as the patients' lack of awareness of how to search for professional support, a shortage of professional staff, and the lack of a culturally appropriate assessment tool. CONCLUSIONS Cancer patients' supportive care needs were not always fully provided by nurses, even when these needs were identified by healthcare professionals. Nursing professional social support needs should be assessed quickly and effectively so that the appropriate interventions can be offered to cancer patients.

Abstract
In this study, the lived experiences of women undergoing ovarian cancer surgery were explored, aiming to provide a patient perspective on being newly diagnosed and starting treatment for ovarian cancer. The study period ran from the first visit in the outpatient clinic, till 8 weeks later, when the women had either begun chemotherapy or completed their recovery. Ten women participated in two qualitative research interviews each, before and after surgery. By applying a phenomenological-hermeneutic text interpretation methodology, the findings were systematically identified, put into meaning-structures, interpreted and discussed. This process constituted the theme: 'Hoping for the best, preparing for the worst'. Final diagnostics and treatment start were extensive life events, where life itself was threatened, although hope and will were present. The women intuitively prepared themselves for the diagnosis and treatment. However, the ability to prepare was influenced by personal lifestyle, social conditions, coping strategies, and experiences of hope. The ability to prepare could be strengthened by providing adjusted information, psychosocial support and physical optimisation during the perioperative period. By offering targeted family counselling and taking good care of the women's general health and well-being, hope could be sustained and early cancer rehabilitation initiated.

Abstract
This review focuses on the contributions of stress-related behavioral factors to cancer growth and metastasis and the biobehavioral mechanisms underlying these relationships. Behavioral factors that are important in modulation of the stress response and the pivotal role of neuroendocrine regulation in the downstream alteration of physiologic pathways relevant to cancer control, including the cellular immune response, inflammation, and tumor angiogenesis, invasion, and cell signaling pathways are described. Consequences for cancer progression and metastasis, as well as quality of life, are delineated. Behavioral and pharmacologic interventions with the potential to alter these biobehavioral pathways for patients with cancer are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are few studies of QoL among long-term gynecologic cancer survivors; available data suggest significant sequelae of disease and treatment. Research clarifying circumstances that improve difficult survivorship trajectories is lacking. PURPOSE The present study examines whether social support moderates the relationship between physical functioning and psychological outcomes by testing the stress-buffering hypothesis. METHODS Participants (N = 260) were gynecologic cancer survivors (cervical, n = 47; endometrial, n = 133; ovarian, n = 69; vulvar, n = 11). Compromised physical health was conceptualized as multidimensional. Social support (SNI, PSS-Fa, PSS-Fr, ISEL) was tested as a buffer of adverse psychological outcomes (IES-R, CES-D). RESULTS Results for traumatic stress provided evidence for buffering; whereas social support was of general benefit for depressive symptoms. Effects varied by source and type of support. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that circumstances for gynecologic cancer survivors burdened with physical symptoms may be worse for those with fewer support resources, providing needed insight into a common target of psychosocial interventions for cancer survivors.

Abstract
The immune system's efficacy in detecting and destroying cancer cells varies considerably throughout the stages of cancer development and its role may be critical particularly during the surgical period. Although surgery causes tumor cells to shed into the blood, immune cells have the capacity to destroy these tumor cells. However, surgery also suppresses cytotoxic capacity. It is particularly during this surgical period that psychological factors can have a significant dampening or strengthening impact on surgery-related immunomodulation response, thus exerting an effect on survival. This review describes the immune changes during the peri-surgical period and the influences psychological factors have on immune function, including the immune effects caused by psychological interventions in cancer patients. We recommend that future studies exploring the role of psychological factors on immune function and survival focus more on their influence during the peri-surgical period.

Abstract
Studies suggest that stress can be a co-factor for the initiation and progression of cancer. The catecholamine stress hormone, norepinephrine (NE), may influence tumor progression by modulating the expression of factors implicated in angiogenesis and metastasis. The goal of this study was to examine the influence of NE on the expression of VEGF, IL-8, and IL-6 by the human melanoma cell lines, C8161, 1174MEL, and Me18105. Cells were treated with NE and levels of VEGF, IL-8, and IL-6 were measured using ELISA and real-time PCR. The expression of beta-adrenergic receptors (beta-ARs) mRNA and protein were also assessed. Finally, immunohistochemistry was utilized to examine the presence of beta1- and beta2-AR in primary and metastatic human melanoma biopsies. We show that NE treatment upregulated production of VEGF, IL-8, and IL-6 in C8161 cells and to a lesser extent 1174MEL and Me18105 cells. The upregulation was associated with induced gene expression. The effect on C8161 cells was mediated by both beta1- and beta2-ARs. Furthermore, 18 of 20 melanoma biopsies examined expressed beta2-AR while 14 of 20 melanoma biopsies expressed beta1-AR. Our data support the hypothesis that NE can stimulate the aggressive potential of melanoma tumor cells, in part, by inducing the production VEGF, IL-8, and IL-6. This line of research further suggests that interventions targeting components of the activated sympathetic-adrenal medullary (SAM) axis, or the utilization of beta-AR blocking agents, may represent new strategies for slowing down the progression of malignant disease and improving cancer patients' quality of life.
