Abstract
Bone defect repair is a complicated clinical problem, particularly when the defect is relatively large and the bone is unable to repair itself. Magnesium and its alloys have been introduced as versatile biomaterials to repair bone defects because of their excellent biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, bone-mimicking biomechanical features, and non-toxic and biodegradable properties. Therefore, magnesium alloys have become a popular research topic in the field of implants to treat critical bone defects. This review explores the popular Mg alloy research topics in the field of bone defects. Bibliometric analyses demonstrate that the degradation control and mechanical properties of Mg alloys are the main research focus for the treatment of bone defects. Furthermore, the additive manufacturing (AM) of Mg alloys is a promising approach for treating bone defects using implants with customized structures and functions. This work reviews the state of research on AM-Mg alloys and the current challenges in the field, mainly from the two aspects of controlling the degradation rate and the fabrication of excellent mechanical properties. First, the advantages, current progress, and challenges of the AM of Mg alloys for further application are discussed. The main mechanisms that lead to the rapid degradation of AM-Mg are then highlighted. Next, the typical methods and processing parameters of laser powder bed fusion fabrication on the degradation characteristics of Mg alloys are reviewed. The following section discusses how the above factors affect the mechanical properties of AM-Mg and the recent research progress. Finally, the current status of research on AM-Mg for bone defects is summarized, and some research directions for AM-Mg to drive the application of clinical orthopedic implants are suggested.

Abstract
To further improve the comprehensive performance of Mg-based alloy, hot extrusion combined with multi-pass equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was applied to process Mg-3 wt%Zn-0.2 wt%Ca alloy and 1 wt%β-TCP/Mg-3 wt%Zn-0.2 wt%Ca biocomposites. The microstructure evolution, mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, and cell biocompatibility of the experimental specimens were systematically investigated. The average grain size of 13.4 ± 0.6 μm in MgZnCa alloy and 9.6 ± 0.3 μm in composites materials can be achieved by six ECAP passes. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of 388.4 ± 7.3 MPa and the strain at failure of 14.3 ± 1.5% were confirmed in MgZnCa alloy, while the UCS of 405.3 ± 7.4 MPa and the strain at failure of 9.8 ± 1.9% were achieved by the addition of β-TCP after six ECAP passes. In spite of different compositions, the minimum corrosion rate of 0.895 mm·Y−1 and 1.117 mm·Y−1 can be achieved by two ECAP passes at 593 K. The cytocompatibility evaluation revealed that the experimental materials processed by six ECAP passes had no significant cytotoxicity to L929 cells, and the addition of β-TCP improved the cytocompatibility.

Abstract
The present study investigates Mg–2Zn–1Ca/XMn alloys as biodegradable implants for orthopedic fracture fixation applications. The effect of the presence and progressive addition of manganese (X = 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 wt.%) on the degradation, and post-corrosion compressive response were investigated. Results suggest that the addition of manganese at 0.5 wt.% improved the corrosion resistance of Mg–2Zn–1Ca alloys. The pH values stabilized for the 0.5Mn-containing alloy and displayed a lower corrosion rate when compared to other Mg–2Zn–1Ca/Mn alloys. Mg–2Zn–1Ca showed a progressive reduction in the compressive strength properties at the end of day 21 whereas Mg–2Zn–1Ca/0.3Mn and Mg–2Zn–1Ca/0.5Mn samples showed a decrease until day 14 and stabilized around the same strength range after day 21. The ability of Mg–2Zn–1Ca/0.5Mn alloy to develop a network of protective hydroxide and phosphate layers has resulted in the corrosion control of the alloy. Mg–2Zn–1Ca/0.7Mn displays segregation of Mn particles at the grain boundaries resulting in decreased corrosion protection. The mechanism behind the corrosion protection of Mg–2Zn–1Ca alloys was discussed.

Abstract
The development of biodegradable Zn matrix composites has been considered a promising approach to achieving enhanced mechanical properties, controllable degradation rate, good biocompatibility, and good osseointegration as orthopedic implants. However, scant literature regarding Zn matrix composites has been reported because of the great difficulty in dispersing the nano-sized bioactive reinforcements uniformly within the Zn matrix. In the present study, a novel and effective method were employed to obtain Zn matrix composites reinforced by uniformly dispersed beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) via graphene oxide (GO)-assisted hetero-agglomeration and subsequent spark plasma sintering process. A very low-content (0.04 vol%) few-layered GO was used as a coupling reagent to connect the Zn matrix and nano-sized TCP particles. In an appropriate polarity solvent, the negatively charged GO sheets could combine with both the positively charged Zn powder and TCP particles by electrostatic attraction and charge neutralization. Due to the nature of hetero-agglomeration, the flexible GO sheet could adhere to the large Zn powder and attracted a certain amount of TCP particles to form a Zn/GO/TCP sandwich structure by charge neutralization thereby forming a uniform dispersion of TCP particles within Zn matrix. After the spark plasma sintering (SPS) process, the TCP particles incorporated with very thin ZnO layers (thickness of a few dozen nanometers) formed a homogeneous and unique 3D network-like distribution in as-sintered TCP/Zn composites. A unique "snap pea"-like structure was confirmed at the grain boundary of α-Zn grains, which consisted of the TCP particles as "pea" and thin ZnO layer as "pod". Due to the uniform dispersion of bioactive TCP particles and unique structure of the TCP incorporating grain boundary, as-sintered 3TCP/Zn matrix composites possessed yield strength (YS) of 140.8 ± 7.7 MPa, failure strain of 36.0 ± 2.8%, the moderate degradation rate of 19.1 ± 3.3 μm·y-1 and good cytocompatibility to MC3T3-E1 cells. Moreover, osteogenic differentiation activity evaluation revealed that the addition of TCP could significantly improve the expressions of the osteogenic differentiation-related gene (ALP) in MC3T3-E1 cells, thereby resulting in improved osteogenic capability. Therefore, biodegradable 3TCP/Zn matrix composites fabricated by GO-assisted hetero-agglomeration and subsequent SPS process could be a promising material as orthopedic implants.

Insight into the Role and Mechanism of Nano MgO on the Hot Compressive Deformation Behavior of Mg-Zn-Ca Alloys. METALS 2020. Abstract
Aiming to investigate the role and mechanism of nano MgO on the hot compressive deformation behavior of Mg alloys, the Mg-3Zn-0.2Ca alloy (MZC, in wt%) and the 0.2MgO/Mg-3Zn-0.2Ca alloy (MZCM, in wt%) were investigated systematically in the temperature range of 523–673 K and the strain rate range of 0.001–1 s−1. MZCM shows finer grains and second phase because of the refinement effects of added MgO. Flow behavior analysis shows that the addition of nano MgO promotes the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of MZC. The flow stress of MZCM is lower than that of MZC during deformation at 523–623 K but exhibits a reverse trend at 673 K and 0.1–1 s−1. The constitutive analysis indicates that dislocation climb is the dominant deformation mechanism for MZC and MZCM. The addition of nano MgO particles decreases the stress sensitivity and deformation resistance for thermal deformation and improves the plasticity of the MZC. Besides, according to the processing map constructed at strains of 0.7 and corresponding microstructure evolution, MZCM exhibits higher power dissipation efficiency and smaller instability regions than MZC, and the optimum hot working condition for MZCM was determined to be at 623–653 K and 0.01–0.001 s−1.

Abstract
Amphotericin B (AmB) exhibits potential antileishmanial activity, with only a little rate of recurrence. However, low bioavailability and severe nephrotoxicity are among the major shortcomings of AmB-based therapy. Various AmB nanoformulations have been developed, which to an extent, have reduced its toxicity and increased the drug efficacy. To further reduce the nonspecific tissue distribution and the cost of the treatment, the current AmB-based formulations require additional improvements. Combination of natural bioenhancers with AmB is expected to further increase its bioavailability. Therefore, we developed a nanoformulation of AmB and piperine (Pip), a plant alkaloid, known to enhance the bioavailability of various drugs, by entrapping them in guar gum, a macrophage targeting polymer. Owing to the ease of oral delivery, these nanoparticles (NPs) were coated with eudragit to make them suitable for oral administration. The formulated eudragit-coated AmB and Pip-loaded NPs (Eu-HDGG-AmB-Pip-NPs) exhibited controlled release of the loaded therapeutic agents and protected the drug from acidic pH. These NPs exhibited effective suppression of growth of both promastigotes and amastigotes of Leishmania donovani parasite under in vitro. In vivo evaluation of these NPs for therapeutic efficacy in golden hamster-L. donovani model demonstrated enhanced drug bioavailability, non-nephrotoxic nature, and potential antileishmanial activity with up to 96% inhibition of the parasite. Abstract
Magnesium (Mg) and some of its alloys have attracted extensive interests for biomedical applications as they exhibit biodegradability and low elastic modulus that is closer to natural bones than the currently used metallic implant materials such as titanium (Ti) and its alloys, stainless steels, and cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloys. However, the rapid degradation of Mg alloys and loss of their mechanical integrity before sufficient bone healing impede their clinical application. Our literature review shows that magnesium matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) reinforced with nanoparticles possess enhanced strength, high corrosion resistance, and good biocompatibility. This article provides a detailed analysis of the effects of nanoparticle reinforcements on the mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, and biocompatibility of MMNCs as promising biodegradable implant materials. The governing equations to quantitatively predict the mechanical properties and underlying synergistic strengthening mechanisms in MMNCs are elucidated. The potential, recent advances, challenges and future research directions in relation to nanoparticles reinforced MMNCs are highlighted. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Critically reviewing magnesium metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) for the biomedical application. Clear definitions of strengthening mechanisms using reinforcement particle in the magnesium matrix, as there were controversial in governing equations of strengthening parameters. Providing better understanding of the effect of particle size, volume fraction, interfacial bonding, and uniform dispersion of reinforcement particles on MMNCs.
