Effect of Microwave Plasma Pre-Treatment on Cotton Cellulose Dissolution

The utilization of cellulose to its full potential is constrained by its recalcitrance to dissolution resulting from the rigidity of polymeric chains, high crystallinity, high molecular weight, and extensive intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding network. Therefore, pretreatment of cellulose is usually considered as a step that can help facilitate its dissolution. We investigated the use of microwave oxygen plasma as a pre-treatment strategy to enhance the dissolution of cotton fibers in aqueous NaOH/Urea solution, which is considered to be a greener solvent system compared to others. Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Powder X-ray Diffraction analyses revealed that plasma pretreatment of cotton cellulose leads to physicochemical changes of cotton fibers. Pretreatment of cotton cellulose with oxygen plasma for 20 and 40 min resulted in the reduction of the molecular weight of cellulose by 36% and 60% and crystallinity by 16% and 25%, respectively. This reduction in molecular weight and crystallinity led to a 34% and 68% increase in the dissolution of 1% (w/v) cotton cellulose in NaOH/Urea solvent system. Thus, treating cotton cellulose with microwave oxygen plasma alters its physicochemical properties and enhanced its dissolution.

Interaction Mechanisms and Application of Ozone Micro/Nanobubbles and Nanoparticles: A Review and Perspective

Ozone micro/nanobubbles with catalytic processes are widely used in the treatment of refractory organic wastewater. Micro/nanobubble technology overcomes the limitations of ozone mass transfer and ozone utilization in the application of ozone oxidation, and effectively improves the oxidation efficiency of ozone. The presence of micro/nanobubbles keeps the catalyst particles in a dynamic discrete state, which effectively increases the contact frequency between the catalyst and refractory organic matter and greatly improves the mineralization efficiency of refractory organic matter. This paper expounds on the characteristics and advantages of micro/nanobubble technology and summarizes the synergistic mechanism of microbubble nanoparticles and the mechanism of catalyst ozone micro/nanobubble systems in the treatment of refractory organics. An interaction mechanism of nanoparticles and ozone microbubbles is suggested, and the proposed theories on ozone microbubble systems are discussed with suggestions for future studies on systems of nanoparticles and ozone microbubbles.

Influence of the On-time on the Ozone Production in Pulsed Dielectric Barrier Discharges

Understanding the production mechanisms of ozone and other reactive species in atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) has become increasingly important for the optimization and commercial success of these plasma devices in emerging applications, such as plasma medicine, plasma agriculture, and plasma catalysis. In many of these applications, input power modulation is exploited as a means to maintain a low gas temperature. Although the chemical pathways leading to ozone production/destruction and their strong temperature dependence are relatively well understood, the effect of the on-time duration on the performance of these modulated DBDs remains largely unexplored. In this study, we use electrical and optical diagnostics, as well as computational methods, to assess the performance of a modulated DBD device. The well-established Lissajous method for measuring the power delivered to the discharge is not suitable for modulated DBDs because the transients generated at the beginning of each pulse become increasingly important in short on-time modulated plasmas. It is shown that for the same input power and modulation duty-cycle, shorter on-time pulses result in significantly enhanced ozone production, despite their operation at slightly higher temperatures. The key underpinning mechanism that causes this counter-intuitive observation is the more efficient net generation rate of ozone during the plasma on-time due to the lower accumulation of NO2 in the discharge volume.
