Abstract
Heart rate variability (HRV) is a widely recognized biomarker for autonomic nervous system regulation, applicable in clinical and athletic settings to monitor health and recovery. Despite its extensive use, HRV measurement reliability is influenced by numerous factors, necessitating controlled conditions for accurate assessments. This study investigates the reliability of short-term HRV measurements in various settings and positions, aiming to establish consistent protocols for HRV monitoring and interpretation. We assessed morning HRV in 34 healthy, physically active adults across supine and standing positions, at home and in the laboratory, over a 24-hour period. Environment significantly impacted standing HRV. Home measurements exhibited slightly lower variance compared to lab settings, underscoring the importance of environment control. Our findings confirm the high reliability of HRV measurements, indicating their robustness in capturing autonomic changes, provided a rigorous methodology is employed. Here we show that effective and reliable HRV assessment is possible across various conditions, contingent upon strict management of confounding factors. This research supports the utility of HRV as a non-invasive diagnostic tool, emphasizing its importance in health management and potential in broadening applications to diverse populations. Future studies are encouraged to expand these assessments to include varied demographic and clinical profiles, enhancing HRV integration into routine health evaluations.

Abstract
Objective. Heart rate variability (HRV) is an important indicator of cardiac autonomic function. Given its clinical significance, reliable HRV assessment is crucial. Here, we assessed test-retest stability, as a key aspect of reliability, quantifying the consistency of a measure when repeated under the same conditions.Approach. This observational study includes healthy individuals. A 20 min electrocardiogram was recorded at rest in a supine position and during deep breathing in two lab sessions within one week, at the same time of day. HRV indices from time domain, frequency domain, nonlinear dynamics, and information-theoretic complexity were assessed using a validated toolbox. Additionally, heart rate variations per respiratory cycle were evaluated during deep breathing. Lifestyle factors such as perceived stress, mood, physical activity, sleep quality were assessed prior to both sessions. Intra-class correlation (ICC) and coefficients of variation (CVs) were used to assess the concordance between the two measurements and the relative deviation, respectively.Main results. From 62 screened individuals, 51 participants were recruited from the local community. One participant opted out for personal reasons, and another with frequent premature beats was excluded, leaving a final sample of 49 individuals. Most self-rated psychological and lifestyle indicators showed substantial agreement, though participants reported less stress and better mood in the second session. At rest, ICC of HRV ranged from 0.50 to 0.83, with CV from 5% to 41%. Spectral HRV measures were less reliable than time domain parameters. Nonlinear and time domain features had substantial to nearly perfect agreement. Complexity measures had low CVs but limited test-retest correlation. The stability indices of HRV during deep breathing were not significantly different from those during rest. Test-retest differences in root mean square of the successive beat-to-beat interval difference were not sufficiently explained by lifestyle factors.Significance.Test-retest stability of HRV depends considerably on chosen measures. Our data suggest that HRV can be assessed reliably using time-domain indices at rest.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-lasting symptoms (>12 weeks) following a COVID-19 infection are defined as the post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS), often manifesting as fatigue and reduced exercise capacity. Thus, exercise has been suggested as a non-pharmacological therapy. AIM To investigate the effects of endurance vs. concurrent exercise on physical function, symptoms and quality of life in individuals with PCS, that did not need hospital admission during acute COVID-19. DESIGN Parallel-group, single-center, randomized controlled trial. SETTING This study was conducted at the University of Vienna. POPULATION Adult individuals with a SARS-CoV-2 infection at least 12 weeks prior to enrollment who reported at least one symptom specific to PCS and did not experience post-exertional malaise. METHODS Participants were randomized to either 12 weeks of supervised endurance training (ED) or concurrent training (CT), or a non-exercising control group (C). As the primary outcome, VO2peak was assessed pre and post intervention. Secondary outcomes were handgrip and lower body strength, heart rate variability, symptoms, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and concentration performance. The main effects for time and group as well as the time*group interaction were assessed via a 2x2 analysis of variance. Additionally, within-group pre-post testing was performed. RESULTS Taking the study protocol into account, 42 subjects could be included in the analysis (N.=14 in each group). A significant time*group interaction favoring both exercise conditions was found for VO2peak (partial Eta2=0.267; ED: +3.9 mL/min/kg; CT: +3.2 mL/min/kg). The Fatigue Severity Score significantly decreased in ED (Hedges' g=0.63) and CT (Hedges' g=0.82) from pre to post, but not in C. Breathlessness and lower body strength improved most in CT. Significant within-group improvements in HRQoL and the number of PCS symptoms occurred in all groups. CONCLUSIONS Both exercise regimes led to increases in VO2peak and lower fatigue scores in subjects with PCS. Improvements in HRQoL occurred in all groups, however more pronounced after the exercise interventions. No definite conclusion about the superiority of either training modality can be drawn. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT The results show that in this population both exercise regimes are feasible and safe and lead to improvements in various health domains.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Digital technologies can play an important role in improving the limited accessibility of healthcare services in rural regions (e.g., via remote assessment). However, whether remote fitness assessments (RFA) of selected physical and cognitive fitness parameters are feasible both in younger and older persons and whether they can reproduce laboratory tests needs yet to be established. Thus, this study aimed to address this knowledge gap by investigating the feasibility, and reproducibility of RFA in younger and middle-aged to older adults (MOA). METHODS A total of 31 younger adults and 32 MOAs participated in this study. At an interval of seven days, laboratory-based and remote assessments (via videoconferencing software) were conducted which included the quantification of the following parameters: (i) measurement of heart rate variability [HRV]; followed by (ii) cognitive testing to examine the level of attention, executive functions (oral Trail Making Test [A and B]), working memory, verbal short-term memory (digit span memory test and word list test (immediate recall)) and episodic memory (word list test (delayed recall)); followed by (iii) physical fitness assessments including performance tests of balance (balance test), functional strength ability of the lower limbs (5-time-sit-to-stand-test) and endurance capacity (3-min step test). Parameters of absolute and relative reliability were determined to assess the reproducibility of the laboratory-based and remote assessments. RESULTS The selected physical and cognitive fitness parameters showed moderate to excellent relative reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.52-0.95). The parameters of absolute reliability (Bland-Altman plot and standard error of measurement [SEM]) provide evidence for good reproducibility of HRV parameters and measures of physical fitness, whereas measures of cognitive fitness showed moderate to good reproducibility. On a descriptive level, the absolute and relative reliability of the selected measures of physical and cognitive fitness did not vary as a function of participants' age. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that RFA of selected measures of physical and cognitive fitness is feasible and reproduces corresponding laboratory results to a moderate to excellent level in both younger adults and MOA. Data showed that the reproducibility of laboratory-based and remote assessments is not influenced by the age of the participants. These findings support the use of digital technologies to improve the accessibility of healthcare services (e.g., in remote areas). However, as the reproducibility varies considerably across the different parameters, further studies are needed to evaluate the effects of an optimised standardisation of the remote assessments and confounding factors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Heart rate variability (HRV) is determined by the variation of consecutive cardiac electrical excitations, usually from RR intervals of an EKG. The sequence of intervals is a time series that yields three HRV parameter categories: time domain, frequency domain, and nonlinear. Parameter estimates are based on widely different EKG sample times: short-term (~5-10 minutes), longer (24 hours), and ultra-short (<5 minutes). Five-minute intervals are useful to evaluate intervention effects that change HRV in a single session by comparing pre-to-post values. This approach relies on knowing the minimal detectible change (MDC) that indicates a real change in clinical and research studies. The specific aims of this pilot study were to (1) evaluate HRV power and its spectral distribution among contiguous five-minute intervals, (2) compare the power distribution in a five-minute interval with a full 45-minute assessment, and (3) provide data to aid estimation of the MDC between pre- and post-interventions during a single session. Methods: Twelve self-reported healthy young adults participated after signing an approved consent. Participation required subjects who had no history of cardiovascular disease or were taking vasoactive substances. Persons with diabetes were not eligible. While subjects were supine, EKG leads were placed, and EKG was recorded for 45 minutes at 1000 samples/sec. The 45 minutes were divided into nine five-minute contiguous intervals, and the spectral density in each was determined. Total power and spectral percentages within each interval were assessed in the very low (VLF, 0.003-0.04 Hz), low (LF, 0.04-0.15 Hz), and high (HF, 0.15-0.4 Hz) frequency bands. These were compared among intervals and to the full 45-minute sample. The MDC was determined by comparing powers in five-minute intervals separated by 10 minutes. The standard error of the measurement (SEME) for each pair was calculated from the square root of the mean square error (√MSE). MSE was based on a two-factor analysis of variance, and MDC was 2×√2×SEME. RESULTS Differences in total power and spectral power distribution among intervals were not statistically significant. The total mean power±SD was 4561±1434 ms². The maximum difference in total power was 7.85%. The mean power for the VLF, LF, and HF bands was respectively 1713±1736 ms², 1574±1072 ms², and 1257±1016 ms². The maximum percentage difference in spectral power across all intervals for VLF, LF, and HF was respectively 3.75%, 8.5%, and 7.4%. The percentage of power in the VLF, LF, and HF bands was respectively 37.9%, 36.1%, and 25.9%. The ratios of spectral to total power for VLF, LF, and HF bands were respectively 0.80±0.07, 1.20±0.11, and 1.22±0.10. MDC percentage values were 21.0±4.9% for the HF band, 25.7±1.4% for the LF band, and 30.4±5.5% for the VLF band. CONCLUSION Results offer initial estimates of variations in HRV power in the VLF, LF, and HF bands in contiguous five-minute intervals and estimates of the minimum detectible "real" changes between intervals separated by 10 minutes. The pattern of variation and data are useful in experimental planning in which HRV spectral power changes are assessed subsequent to a short-duration intervention during a single session. MDC values (21.0% in the HF band to 30.4% in the VLF band) provide initial estimates useful for estimating the number of participants needed to evaluate the impact of an intervention on spectral components of HRV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Short-term (5 min) heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is widely used in assessing autonomic nervous system activity during exercise. While shortening the HRV measurement duration can help improve its application efficiency, its accuracy needs to be verified. This study investigated the agreement between ultra-short-term (UST) HRV (3 or 4 min) and standard 5 min HRV and explored the optimal recording duration under resting and post-exercise conditions. METHODS Fourteen participants exercised on a cycle ergometer at 60% of their maximum peak power. Data were collected during the rest condition (Pre-E) and three post-exercise conditions (Post-E1, Post-E2, and Post-E3), with indicators of the standard deviation (SDNN) of the ultra-short and short-term RR intervals and the root mean square (RMSSD) of the continuous difference between RR intervals. Repeated measures ANOVA, Cohen's d statistic, Bland-Altman analysis, and interclass correlation coefficients (ICC) assessed the agreement between UST-HRV and ST-HRV. RESULTS The consistency results of SDNN and RMSSD in resting and post-exercise were different. At the Pre-E, Post-E2, and Post-E3 phases, no statistical differences for SDNN and RMSSD were observed, with ICCs surpassing 0.9, indicating a high level of agreement. However, at Post-E2, there was a significant difference between 3 min RMSSD and 5 min RMSSD (p < 0.05), as well as between 3 min SDNN, 4 min SDNN, and 5 min SDNN (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the limits of agreement were observed to decrease as the time duration increased in Bland-Altman plots. CONCLUSIONS UST-HRV analysis is a reliable substitute for standard 5 min HRV assessment, particularly during resting conditions. For post-exercise measurements, assessing the appropriateness of a 3- or 4 min duration based on the exercise's length is recommended to ensure accuracy and reliability.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the inter-day reliability of time-domain, frequency-domain, and nonlinear HRV metrics in healthy highly active younger and older adults. The study also assessed the effect of age on the HRV metrics. METHODS Forty-four older adults (34 M, 10F; 59 ± 5 years;V ˙ O 2peak = 40.9 ± 7.6 ml kg-1 min-1) and twenty-two younger adults (16 M, 6F; 22 ± 4 years;V ˙ O 2peak = 47.2 ± 12.8 ml kg-1 min-1) attended the laboratory. Visit one assessed aerobic fitness through an exercise test. In visits two and three, participants completed a 30-min supine RR interval measurement to derive the HRV metrics. RESULTS The younger group (YG) and older group (OG) demonstrated poor to good day-to-day relative and absolute reliability for all HRV metrics (OG, ICCs = 0.33 to 0.69 and between day CVs = 3.8 to 29.2%; YG, ICCs = 0.37 to 0.93 and between day CVs = 3.5 to 36.5%). There was a significant reduction in ApEn (P < 0.001), SampEn (P = 0.031), RMSSD (P < 0.001), SDNN (P < 0.001), LF power (P < 0.001) and HF power (P < 0.001), HRV metrics with ageing. There was no significant effect of age the complexity metrics DFA α1 (P = 0.107), α2 (P = 0.147) and CI-8 (P = 0.493). CONCLUSION HRV metrics are reproducible between days in both healthy highly active younger and older adults. There is a decline in linear and nonlinear HRV metrics with age, albeit there being no age-related change in the nonlinear metrics, DFA α1, α2 and CI-8.

Abstract
Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is an index of parasympathetic nervous system activity reflecting respiratory influences on heart rate. This influence is typically measured as high frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) or root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) of adjacent inter-beat intervals. Examining the long-term stability of its measurement is important as levels of resting RSA have been conceptualized as a marker of individual differences; in particular, of an individual's autonomic regulation and affect-related processes, including emotion regulation. At present, it is not known if resting RSA levels reflect stable differences over a long-term period (i.e., >1 year). Even less is known about how RSA stability differs as a function of depression history and whether it relates to depression risk trajectories. In the present study, we examined the 1.5-year test-retest reliability of resting RSA using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) in 82 adults: n = 41 with a history of depression (ever-depressed); n = 41 controls with no depression history (never-depressed). HF-HRV was fairly stable in both groups (ever-depressed ICC = 0.55, never-depressed ICC = 0.54). RMSSD was also fairly stable in ever-depressed adults (ICC = 0.57) and never-depressed controls (ICC = 0.40). ICC values for both indices did not differ between groups per overlapping 95% confidence intervals. Therefore, RSA stability as assessed by both frequency (HF-HRV) and time domain (RMSSD) measures was not attenuated by a depression history. Implications and the need for future research are discussed.

Abstract
Electrical currents are didactic contents widely applied in the training of physiotherapy students, but the treatment is considered a stressful situation for both the patient who receives it and the student who applies it. The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress-associated autonomic response of physiotherapy students receiving interferential current by measuring and analysing heart rate variability. An observational case-control study was conducted. Ninety healthy male volunteers, all physiotherapy degree students, were enrolled while attending laboratory practice during the 2020-2021 academic year. Participants were randomly allocated to a sham electrotherapy group (44 subjects), in which heart rate variability was recorded for 10 min, both at rest and during the application of sham technique on the lower back (10 min), and an electrotherapy group (46 subjects), applying the same procedure with the electrical current flowing. Outcome measures included baseline (seated position) and postintervention (prone position) time domain parameter, diameters of the Poincaré plot 1 and 2, stress score, and sympathetic/parasympathetic ratio. The sham electrotherapy group exhibited significant increases in time domain parameter (p = 0.027) and diameters of the Poincaré plot 1 (p = 0.032), with a small effect size (d ≤ 0.5). The electrotherapy group exhibited significant increases in time domain parameter and diameters of the Poincaré plot 1 and 2 (p < 0.001) and decreases in the stress score and sympathetic/parasympathetic ratio (p < 0.001), with a large effect size (d > 0.8) other than for the time domain parameter (d = 0.42), indicating increased parasympathetic and decreased sympathetic activity. After interventions, there were significant differences between groups in diameters of the Poincaré plot 2 (p < 0.001), stress score (p = 0.01) and sympathetic/parasympathetic ratio (p = 0.003), with moderate effect size (d > 0.5). The application of the interferential current technique produces stress-associated autonomic response characterized by greater parasympathetic activity and decreased sympathetic activity. Further studies are needed to determine possible adverse effects.

Abstract
Objectives Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) can reduce both stress and depressive symptoms. However, the impact of mindfulness on stress level in depressed subjects remains unclear. This study aims to assess electrophysiological correlates of mindfulness in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) at baseline, under stress exposure, and in relaxation following stress exposure. Methods Perceived mindfulness was assessed with the Freiburger Mindfulness Inventory (FMI) in 89 inpatients (mean age 51) with MDD [mean Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) 30]. Electrophysiological parameters [resting heart rate (RHR), heart rate variability (HRV), respiration rate, skin conductance, and skin temperature] were recorded at 5-min baseline, 1-min stress exposure, and 5-min self-induced relaxation. Results Freiburger Mindfulness Inventory was strongly inversely correlated with symptom severity measured by BDI (r = –0.53, p < 0.001). No correlations between FM score and electrophysiological parameters in any of the three conditions (baseline, stress exposure, relaxed state) could be found. The factor openness was associated with higher VLF (very low frequency of HRV) in the baseline condition. However, this correlation was no more significant after regression analysis when corrected for respiratory rate, age, and sex. Conclusion Autonomous nervous reactivity in depression was not associated with perceived mindfulness as measured by FMI score and presented electrophysiological parameters, despite the strong inverse correlation between state mindfulness and symptom severity.

Abstract
Elevated resting heart rate variability (HRV) in the high frequency range has been proposed to be protective against worrying when facing environmental stressors. Yet, prospective studies using real-life stressors are still scarce. The present study set out to replicate the previous finding of reduced resting HRV predicting COVID-19-associated worries in a larger, more homogenous sample over a longer period of time (N = 123; age: 42.32 [SD:10.72]; 65.9 % female; average time lag: six years). In addition, we were interested in investigating the specificity of this effect with respect to worry content, other physiological markers of autonomic functions, and additional potentially relevant covariates with a special focus on a potential moderating effect of sex on this association. In regression analyses adjusting for age, sex, BMI and smoking status, the interaction between HRV and sex was significant, with women depicting a stronger association between HRV and COVID-19 associated worries. Further sensitivity analyses revealed the specificity of the effect for HRV as distinct from mean heart rate, as well as its dependence on previous COVID-19 infection, but not COVID-19 vaccination status and chronic stress level. These data are in line with theories that propose that higher HRV levels can be protective against the deleterious effects of real-life environmental stressors. However, our results also point to the specificity of this effect, especially with respect to worry content and sex.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Psychopathology (and depression in particular) is a cardiovascular risk factor independent from any co-occurring pathology. This link is traced back to the mind-heart-body connection, whose underlying mechanisms are still not completely known. To study psychopathology in relation to the heart, it is necessary to observe the autonomic nervous system, which mediates among the parts of that connection. Its gold standard of evaluation is the study of heart rate variability (HRV). To investigate whether any association exists between the HRV parameters and sub-threshold depressive symptoms in a sample of healthy subjects. METHOD In this cross-sectional study, two short-term HRV recordings (5 min - supine and sitting) have been analyzed in 77 healthy subjects. Here we adopted a three-fold approach to evaluate HRV: a set of scores belonging to the time domain; to the frequency domain (high, low, and very low frequencies) and a set of 'nonlinear' parameters. The PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) scale was used to detect depressive symptoms. RESULTS Depressive symptoms were associated only with a parameter from the non-linear approach and specifically the long-term fluctuations of fractal dimensions (DFA-α2). This association remained significant even after controlling for age, gender, BMI (Body-Mass-Index), arterial hypertension, anti-hypertensive drugs, dyslipidemia, and smoking habits. Moreover, the DFA-α2 was not affected by the baroreflex (postural change), unlike other autonomic markers. CONCLUSIONS Fractal analysis of HRV (DFA-α2) allows then to predict depressive symptoms below the diagnostic threshold in healthy subjects regardless of their health status. DFA-α2 may be considered as an imprint of subclinical depression on the heart rhythm.

Abstract
There is an increasing demand for automatic classification of standard 12-lead electrocardiogram signals in the medical field. Considering that different channels and temporal segments of a feature map extracted from the 12-lead electrocardiogram record contribute differently to cardiac arrhythmia detection, and to the classification performance, we propose a 12-lead electrocardiogram signal automatic classification model based on model fusion (CBi-DF-XGBoost) to focus on representative features along both the spatial and temporal axes. The algorithm extracts local features through a convolutional neural network and then extracts temporal features through bi-directional long short-term memory. Finally, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) is used to fuse the 12-lead models and domain-specific features to obtain the classification results. The 5-fold cross-validation results show that in classifying nine categories of electrocardiogram signals, the macro-average accuracy of the fusion model is 0.968, the macro-average recall rate is 0.814, the macro-average precision is 0.857, the macro-average F1 score is 0.825, and the micro-average area under the curve is 0.919. Similar experiments with some common network structures and other advanced electrocardiogram classification algorithms show that the proposed model performs favourably against other counterparts in F1 score. We also conducted ablation studies to verify the effect of the complementary information from the 12 leads and the auxiliary information of domain-specific features on the classification performance of the model. We demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the XGBoost-based fusion model to classify 12-lead electrocardiogram records into nine common heart rhythms. These findings may have clinical importance for the early diagnosis of arrhythmia and incite further research. In addition, the proposed multichannel feature fusion algorithm can be applied to other similar physiological signal analyses and processing.

Abstract
Background and Purpose Most studies on heart rate variability (HRV) in professional athletes concerned linear, time-, and frequency-domain indices, and there is lack of studies on non-linear parameters in this group. The study aimed to determine the inter-day reliability, and group-related and individual changes of short-term symbolic dynamics (SymDyn) measures during sympathetic nervous system activity (SNSa) stimulation among elite modern pentathletes. Methods Short-term electrocardiographic recordings were performed in stable measurement conditions with a 7-day interval between tests. SNSa stimulation via isometric handgrip strength test was conducted on the second day of study. The occurrence rate of patterns without variations (0V), with one variation (1V), two like (2LV), and two unlike variations (2UV) obtained using three approaches (the Max–min, the σ, and the Equal-probability methods) were analyzed. Relative and absolute reliability were evaluated. Results All SymDyn indices obtained using the Max–min method, 0V, and 2UV obtained using the σ method, 2UV obtained using the Equal-probability method presented acceptable inter-day reliability (the intraclass correlation coefficient between .91 and .99, Cohen’s d between −.08 and .10, the within-subject coefficient of variation between 4% and 22%). 2LV, 2UV, and 0V obtained using the Max–min and σ methods significantly decreased and increased, respectively, during SNSa stimulation—such changes were noted for all athletes. There was no significant association between differences in SymDyn parameters and respiratory rate in stable conditions and while comparing stable conditions and SNSa stimulation. Conclusion SymDyn indices may be used as reliable non-respiratory-associated parameters in laboratory settings to detect autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity modulations in elite endurance athletes. These findings provide a potential solution for addressing the confounding influence of respiration frequency on HRV-derived inferences of cardiac autonomic function. For this reason, SymDyn may prove to be preferable for field-based monitoring where measurements are unsupervised.

Abstract
Individuals with aphasia may have impairments in cognition, higher incidences of depression, and a variety of post-stroke functional impairments. However, evaluating these issues is challenging since most assessments require some degree of linguistic processing and task instructions are often verbal. Heart rate variability has shown to be an objective marker for cognitive functioning in neurologically healthy individuals, depression and post-stroke depression, and post-stroke functional impairments. However, before the utility of heart rate variability is established in persons with aphasia, its test-retest reliability needs to be established. The purpose of this study was to assess test-retest reliability of heart rate variability metrics in persons with aphasia. Heart rate variability was recorded at rest while in a sitting position in twenty-one persons with aphasia at two time points. Heart rate variability metrics were mostly moderately reliable. The majority of participants had resting heart rate variability parasympathetic and sympathetic indexes similar to those of neurologically healthy individuals. Further research is needed to establish the test-retest reliability of heart rate variability metrics in different postures and breathing conditions in persons with aphasia.

Abstract
There is growing research into contributing processes and biological correlates of moral inclinations. Recently, a negative association between utilitarianism and resting heart rate variability (HRV) as an indicator of cardiac vagal tone / parasympathetic activity was reported. We aimed to replicate and extend these findings by additionally investigating the sympathetic parameter electro-dermal activity (EDA), but found no associations in the total sample (N = 157). However, when taking sex and the use of combined oral contraceptives (COC) into account, we found a positive association between HRV and estimated deontology in women using COC and men, while in free cycling women there was a negative association. While no direct replication, our results also point to associations between higher HRV and decreased endorsement of harmful actions that serve a greater good. Unlike HRV, EDA showed no associations with moral judgements. In addition, there were correlations between personality traits and moral judgement.

Abstract
Heart rate variability (HRV) rapidly gains attention as an important marker of cardiovascular autonomic modulation. Moreover, there is evidence for a link between the autonomic deficit measurable by reduced HRV and the hypoactivity of the cholinergic system, which is prominently affected in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Despite the positive influence of physical exercise on cognition and its promising association with HRV, previous studies did not explore the effect of long-term physical exercise in older adults with AD. Taking advantage of a longitudinal study we analyzed the effect of a 20-week dual task training regime (3 × 15-min per week) on the vagal mediated HRV index RMSSD (root mean square of successive RR interval differences) during physical exercise and the short-term memory performance in a AD cohort (N = 14). Each training contained physical exercise on a bicycle ergometer while memorizing 30 successively presented pictures as well as the associated post-exercise picture recognition memory test. Linear-mixed modeling revealed that HRV-RMSSD significantly increased over the intervention time. Moreover, the reaction time in the picture recognition task decreased while the accuracy remained stable. Furthermore, a significantly negative relationship between increased fitness measured by HRV-RMSSD and decreased reaction time was observed. This feasibility study points to the positive effects of a dual task regime on physical and cognitive fitness in a sample with impaired cognitive performance. Beyond this, the results show that the responsiveness of parasympathetic system as measured with HRV can be improved in patients with dementia.

Abstract
Vagally mediated heart rate variability (HRV) is a psychophysiological indicator of mental and physical health. Limited research suggests there is reduced vagal activity and resulting lower HRV in patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD); however little is actually known about the association between HRV and symptoms of depression and whether the association mirrors symptom improvement following psychotherapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between antidepressant therapy, symptom change and HRV in 50 inpatients (68% females; 17–68 years) with a diagnosis of MDD. Severity of depressive symptoms was assessed by self-report (Beck Depression Inventory II) and the Hamilton Rating Scale of Depression. Measures of vagally mediated HRV (root mean square of successive differences and high-frequency) were assessed at multiple measurement points before and after inpatient psychotherapeutic and psychiatric treatment. Results showed an expected negative correlation between HRV and depressive symptoms at intake. Depressive symptoms improved (d = 0.84) without corresponding change in HRV, demonstrating a de-coupling between this psychophysiological indicator and symptom severity. To our knowledge, this study is the first to examine an association between HRV and depressive symptoms before and after psychotherapy. The observed de-coupling of depression and HRV, and its methodological implications for future research are discussed.

Abstract
We evaluated the efficacy of heart rate variability (HRV)-guided training in adolescent athletes during a 2-week, high altitude (≈1900 m) training camp. Sixteen middle- and long-distance runners (4 female/12 male, 16.9 ± 1.0 years, 65.44 ± 4.03 mL·kg-1·min-1) were divided into 2 matched groups, both of which received the same training plan, but one of which acquired postwaking HRV values that were used to tailor the training prescription. During the camp, seven athletes in the HRV-guided group combined for a total of 32 training adjustments, whereas there were only 3 runners combined for 14 total training adjustments in the control group. A significant group by time interaction (p < 0.001) for VO2max was driven by VO2max improvements in the HRV group (+2.8 mL·kg-1·min-1, +4.27%; pBonf = 0.002) that were not observed in the control condition (+0.8 mL·kg-1·min-1, +1.26%; pBonf = 0.643). After returning from the camp, all athletes in the HRV group set a personal best, and six out of eight achieved their best positions in the National Championship, whereas only 75% of athletes in the control group set a personal best and five out of eight achieved their best positions in the National Championship. These data provide evidence in support of HRV-guided training as a way to optimize training prescriptions in adolescent athletes.

Abstract
Observed individual variability in cardiac baroreflex sensitivity (cBRS) and heart rate variability (HRV) is extensive, especially during exposure to stressors such as heat. A large part of the observed variation may be related to the reliability (consistency) of the measurement. We therefore examined the test-retest reliability of cBRS and HRV measurements on three separate occasions in 14 young men (age: 24 (SD 5) years), at rest and during whole-body heating (water-perfused suit) to raise and clamp oesophageal temperature 0.6°C, 1.2°C and 1.8°C above baseline. Beat-to-beat measurements of RR interval and systolic blood pressure (BP) were obtained for deriving HRV (from RR), and cBRS calculated via (i) the spontaneous method, α coefficients and transfer function analysis at each level of heat strain, and (ii) during forced oscillations via squat-stand manoeuvres (0.1 Hz) before and after heating. Absolute values and changes in all cBRS estimates were variable but generally consistent with reductions in parasympathetic activity. cBRS estimates demonstrated poor absolute reliability (coefficient of variation ≥25%), but relative reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient; ICC) of some frequency estimates was acceptable (ICC ≥0.70) during low-heat strain (ICC: 0.56-0.74). After heating, forced oscillations in BP demonstrated more favourable responses than spontaneous oscillations (better reliability, lower minimum detectable change). Absolute reliability of HRV estimates were poor, but relative reliability estimates were often acceptable (≥0.70). Our findings illustrate how measurement consistency of cardiac autonomic modulation estimates are altered during heat stress, and we demonstrate the possible implications on research design and data interpretation.

Abstract
Research on reliability of heart rate variability (HRV) parameters in athletes has received increasing attention. The aims of this study were to examine the inter-day reliability of short-term (5 min) and ultra-short-term (1 min) heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RespRate) and HRV parameters, agreement between short-term and ultra-short-term parameters, and association between differences in HR, RespRate and HRV parameters in elite modern pentathletes. Electrocardiographic recordings were performed in stable measurement conditions with a week interval between tests. Relative reliability was evaluated by intra-class correlation coefficients, absolute reliability was evaluated by within-subject coefficient of variation, and agreement was evaluated using Bland-Altman (BA) plot with limits of agreement and defined a priori maximum acceptable difference. Short-term HR, RespRate, log transformed (ln) root mean square of successive normal-to-normal interval differences (lnRMSSD), ln high frequency (lnHF) and SD2/SD1 HRV indices and ultra-short-term HR, RespRate and lnRMSSD presented acceptable, satisfactory inter-day reliability. Although there were no significant differences between short-term and ultra-short-term HR, RespRate and lnRMSSD, no parameter showed acceptable differences with BA plots. Differences in time-domain and non-linear HRV parameters were more correlated with differences in HR than with differences in RespRate. Inverse results were observed for frequency-domain parameters. Short-term HR, RespRate, lnRMSSD, lnHF, and SD2/SD1 and ultra-short-term HR, RespRate and lnRMSSD could be used as reliable parameters in endurance athletes. However, practitioners should interpret changes in HRV parameters with regard to concomitant differences in HR and RespRate and caution should be taken before considering 5 min and 1 min parameters as interchangeable.
