Effects of different SRT on anaerobic digestion of MSW dosed with various MSWI ashes

Variability of Micro- and Macro-Elements in Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Municipal Sewage Sludge and Food Industrial By-Products

The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of selected industrial food wastes on the fate of micro- and macro-elements within an anaerobic digestion process (AD), as well as define the relationship between their content and AD efficiency. Orange peels, (OP), orange pulp (PL) and brewery spent grain (BSG) were used as co-substrates, while municipal sewage sludge (SS) was applied as the main component. The introduction of co-substrates resulted in improvements in feedstock composition in terms of macro-elements, with a simultaneous decrease in the content of HMs (heavy metals). Such beneficial effects led to enhanced methane production, and improved process performance at the highest doses of PL and BSG. In turn, reduced biogas and methane production was found in the three-component digestion mixtures in the presence of OP and BSG; therein, the highest accumulation of most HMs within the process was also revealed. Considering the agricultural application of all digestates, exceedances for Cu, Zn and Hg were recorded, thereby excluding their further use for that purpose.

Review on anaerobic digestion of rice straw for biogas production

India is an agrarian country producing a large amount of rice straw as an agricultural residue. These residues are burnt openly leading to severe environmental pollution and health hazards. Among several options available, anaerobic digestion of rice straw into biomethane gas and digestate is a promising technology. The current paper reviews the characteristics, principles of rice straw and the process variables (temperature, volatile fatty acids, and pH, carbon to nitrogen ratio, metal elements and organic loading rate) that affect the performance of the rice straw digestion and process strategies which may alleviate the barriers and may improve the biomethane yield. Co-digestion of rice straw with nitrogen-rich substrates is proven to be an effective way to balance the carbon to nitrogen ratio, in turn, leads to nutrient balance and enhance the biomethane yields of anaerobic co-digestion system. Moreover, pretreatment is another effective strategy; physical, chemical and biological pretreatments are reviewed in the article which improved the performance of digester. The utilisation of rice straw along with other co-substrates and appropriate pretreatment may be a recommended sustainable solution for preventing environmental and health hazards.

Sludge pre-treatments change performance and microbiome in methanogenic sludge digesters by releasing different sludge organic matter

In this study, temporal impacts of thermal, alkaline/acid and thermal-alkaline sludge pre-treatments on digestion performance and microbiome were investigated and compared in methanogenic sludge digesters. Results showed that thermal and alkaline/acid pre-treatments were efficient in releasing intracellular and EPS organic matter, respectively. The thermal-alkaline pre-treatment showed synergistic impacts of both thermal and alkaline/acid pre-treatments by releasing the major portion of sludge organic matter from solid- to liquid-phase, which result in 60-65% organic carbon removal in subsequent sludge digestion and further optimizing digestion temperature had negligible improvement. The 16S rRNA gene-based analyses suggested that organic matter released from sludge pre-treatments is a major deterministic parameter in shaping sludge microbiome. Pre-treatment specific lineages were identified in different sludge digesters, whereas several taxa were identified as common functionally active populations in sludge digestion. This study provided mechanistic insights into impacts of pre-treatments on digestion performance and microbiome in methanogenic sludge digesters.

Operational Parameters of Biogas Plants: A Review and Evaluation Study

The biogas production technology has improved over the last years for the aim of reducing the costs of the process, increasing the biogas yields, and minimizing the greenhouse gas emissions. To obtain a stable and efficient biogas production, there are several design considerations and operational parameters to be taken into account. Besides, adapting the process to unanticipated conditions can be achieved by adequate monitoring of various operational parameters. This paper reviews the research that has been conducted over the last years. This review paper summarizes the developments in biogas design and operation, while highlighting the main factors that affect the efficiency of the anaerobic digestion process. The study’s outcomes revealed that the optimum operational values of the main parameters may vary from one biogas plant to another. Additionally, the negative conditions that should be avoided while operating a biogas plant were identified.

Perspective on enhancing the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge (WAS) is an important bio-energy strategy that has been hindered by low conversion efficiency. This paper presents a comprehensive review of research on the sludge's property and enhancing AD of WAS, and proposes two perspectives of material structure and microbial activity on improving AD efficiency. In the first part of this review, the key principle problems for hindering AD efficiency are identified based on the concept of AD. Then, the possibility that the complex microstructure and composition of WAS are responsible for poor biodegradability is considered and main methods for enhancing AD are summarized. In the third part, according to the published works, the main knowledge gaps in research are recognized as the identification and specific activity adjustment of functional microbes, the understanding of key constituents of WAS and their interactions, the deciphering of complex structure of sludge organic substance, and the revealing of relationships between complex nature of WAS and biodegradability. Further discussions reveal that to enhance AD more studies should be centered on the sludge's structure and properties in future. However, this review is expected to provide the clear and accurate research directions for enhancing AD efficiency of WAS.

Impact of co-landfill proportion of bottom ash and municipal solid waste composition on the leachate characteristics during the acidogenesis phase

Incineration has become an important municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment strategy, and generates a large amount of bottom ash (BA). Although some BA is reused, much BA and pretreatment residues from BA recycling are disposed in landfill. When BA and MSW are co-landfilled together, acid neutralization capacity and alkaline earth metal dissolution of BA, as well as different components of MSW may change environmental conditions within the landfill, so the degradation of organic matter and the physical and chemical properties of leachate would be affected. In this study, the effect of co-landfilled BA and MSW on the leachate characteristics during the hydrolysis and acidogenesis phase was studied using different BA/MSW ratios and MSW compositions. The results showed that the co-landfill system increased leachate pH, electric conductivity and alkalinity. For MSW with a high content of degradable components, the release and degradation of total organic carbon (TOC) and volatile fatty acids (VFA) from MSW were promoted when the BA ratio by wet weight was less than 50%, and the biodegradability of leachate was improved. When the BA ratio exceeded 50%, the degradation of organic matters was inhibited. For MSW with low content of degradable components, when the proportion of BA was less than 20%, the release and degradation of TOC and VFA from MSW were promoted and alkalinity increased. When the BA ratio exceeded 20%, the degradation of organic matters was inhibited. The 50% BA ratio could improve the bio-treatability of leachate indicated by the leachate pH and C/N ratio. However, BA inhibited the release of nitrogen (TN and NH₄⁺-N) at all BA ratios and MSW compositions. At the same time, the addition of BA increased the risk of leachate collection system clogging due to the dissolution and re-precipitation of alkaline earth metals contained in BA.

Mechanical pretreatment of waste paper for biogas production

In the anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic materials such as waste paper, the accessibility of microorganisms to the fermentable sugars is restricted by their complex structure. A mechanical pretreatment with a Hollander beater was assessed in order to reduce the biomass particle size and to increase the feedstock' specific surface area available to the microorganisms, and therefore improve the biogas yield. Pretreatment of paper waste for 60min improves the methane yield by 21%, from a value of 210ml/gVS corresponding to untreated paper waste to 254ml/gVS. 30min pretreatment have no significant effect on the methane yield. A response surface methodology was used to evaluate the effect of the beating time and feedstock/inoculum ratio on the methane yield. An optimum methane yield of 253ml/gVS was achieved at 55min of beating pretreatment and a F/I ratio of 0.3.
