Abstract
The food processing industry is one of the world's largest consumers of potable water. Agri-food wastewater systems consume about 70% of the world's fresh water and cause at least 80% of deforestation. Food wastewater is characterized by complex composition, a wide range of pollutants, and fluctuating water quality, which can cause huge environmental pollution problems if discharged directly. In recent years, food wastewater has attracted considerable attention as it is considered to have great prospects for resource recovery and reuse due to its rich residues of nutrients and low levels of harmful substances. This review explored and compared the sources and characteristics of different types of food wastewater and methods of wastewater treatment. Particular attention was paid to the different methods of resource recovery and reuse of food wastewater. The diversity of raw materials in the food industry leads to different compositional characteristics of wastewater, which determine the choice and efficiency of wastewater treatment methods. Physicochemical methods, and biological methods alone or in combination have been used for the efficient treatment of food wastewater. Current approaches for recycling and reuse of food wastewater include culture substrates, agricultural irrigation, and bio-organic fertilizers, recovery of high-value products such as proteins, lipids, biopolymers, and bioenergy to alleviate the energy crisis. Food wastewater is a promising substrate for resource recovery and reuse, and its valorization meets the current international policy requirements regarding food waste and environment protection, follows the development trend of the food industry, and is also conducive to energy conservation, emission reduction, and economic development. However, more innovative biotechnologies are necessary to advance the effectiveness of food wastewater treatment and the extent of resource recovery and valorization.

Abstract
Microbial production of succinic acid (SA) at an industrially relevant scale has been hindered by high downstream processing costs arising from neutral pH fermentation for over three decades. Here, we metabolically engineer the acid-tolerant yeast Issatchenkia orientalis for SA production, attaining the highest titers in sugar-based media at low pH (pH 3) in fed-batch fermentations, i.e. 109.5 g/L in minimal medium and 104.6 g/L in sugarcane juice medium. We further perform batch fermentation using sugarcane juice medium in a pilot-scale fermenter (300×) and achieve 63.1 g/L of SA, which can be directly crystallized with a yield of 64.0%. Finally, we simulate an end-to-end low-pH SA production pipeline, and techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment indicate our process is financially viable and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 34-90% relative to fossil-based production processes. We expect I. orientalis can serve as a general industrial platform for production of organic acids.

Abstract
Solid-state fermentation (SSF) is a promising technology for producing value-added products from cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz). In this process, microorganisms are grown on cassava biomass without the presence of free-flowing liquid. Compared to other processing methods, SSF has several advantages, such as lower costs, reduced water usage, and higher product yields. By enhancing the content of bioactive compounds like antioxidants and phenolic compounds, SSF can also improve the nutritional value of cassava-based products. Various products, including enzymes, organic acids, and biofuels, have been produced using SSF of cassava. Additionally, SSF can help minimize waste generated during cassava processing by utilizing cassava waste as a substrate, which can reduce environmental pollution. The process has also been explored for the production of feed and food products such as tempeh and cassava flour. However, optimizing the process conditions, selecting suitable microbial strains, and developing cost-effective production processes are essential for the successful commercialization of SSF of cassava.

Abstract
The magnetic polymer microsphere is a promising adsorbent due to its high adsorption efficiency and good regeneration ability from wastewater. Cassava starch magnetic porous microspheres (AAM-MSMPMs) were synthesized by graft copolymerization in inverse emulsion. Mechanically activated cassava starch (MS) was used to graft skeletons, vinyl monomers [acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM)] as copolymerized unsaturated monomers, methyl methacrylate (MMA) as the dispersing agent, and polyethylene glycol/methanol (PEG2000/MeOH) as the porogen. It was found that the AAM-MSMPM adsorbent is superparamagnetic, the saturation magnetization is 14.9 emu·g-1, and it can be rapidly and directionally separated from Cd(II) ions in aqueous solution. The FTIR indicated that the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups were grafted into MS. The AAM-MSMPM had good speroidization and a uniform size. After the porogen was added, the particle size of the AAM-MSMPM decreased from 19.00 to 7.00 nm, and the specific surface area increased from 7.00 to 35.00 m2·g-1. The pore volume increased from 0.03 to 0.13 cm3·g-1. The AAM-MSMPM exhibited a large specific surface area and provided more adsorption active sites for Cd(II) ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the AAM-MSMPM for Cd(II) ions was 210.68 mg·g-1, i.e., 81.02% higher than that without porogen. Additionally, the Cd(II) ion adsorption process on the AAM-MSMPM can be described by Langmuir isothermal and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. A chemical reaction dominated the Cd(II) ion adsorption process on the AAM-MSMPM, and chemisorption was the rate-controlling step during the Cd(II) ion adsorption process. The AAM-MSMPM still had excellent stability after five consecutive reuses.

Abstract
Commonly known as a subsistence culture, cassava came to be considered a commodity and key to adding value. However, this tuber's processing for starch and flour production is responsible for generating a large amount of waste that causes serious environmental problems. This biomass of varied biochemical composition has excellent potential for producing fuels (biogas, bioethanol, butanol, biohydrogen) and non-energetic products (succinic acid, glucose syrup, lactic acid) via biorefinery. However, there are environmental challenges, leading to uncertainties related to the sustainability of biorefineries. Thus, the provision of information generated in life cycle assessment (LCA) can help reduce bottlenecks found in the productive stages, making production more competitive. Within that, this review concentrates information on the production of value-added products, the environmental impact generated, and the sustainability of biorefineries.

Abstract
The rapid use of petroleum resources coupled with increased awareness of global environmental problems associated with the use of petroleum-based plastics is a major driving force in the acceptance of natural fibers and biopolymers as green materials. Because of their environmentally friendly and sustainable nature, natural fibers and biopolymers have gained significant attention from scientists and industries. Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is a plant that has various purposes for use. It is the primary source of food in many countries and is also used in the production of biocomposites, biopolymers, and biofibers. Starch from cassava can be plasticized, reinforced with fibers, or blended with other polymers to strengthen their properties. Besides that, it is currently used as a raw material for bioethanol and renewable energy production. This comprehensive review paper explains the latest developments in bioethanol compounds from cassava and gives a detailed report on macro and nano-sized cassava fibers and starch, and their fabrication as blend polymers, biocomposites, and hybrid composites. The review also highlights the potential utilization of cassava fibers and biopolymers for industrial applications such as food, bioenergy, packaging, automotive, and others.

Abstract
The treatment of contaminants from lignocellulosic biorefinery effluent has recently been identified as a unique challenge. This study focuses on removing phenolic contaminants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from lignocellulosic biorefinery wastewater (BRW) applying a laccase-assisted approach. Cassava waste was used as a substrate to produce the maximum yield of laccase enzyme (3.9 U/g) from Pleurotus ostreatus. Among the different inducers supplemented, CuSO4 (0.5 mM) showed an eight-fold increase in enzyme production (30.8 U/g) after 240 h of incubation. The catalytic efficiency of laccase was observed as 128.7 ± 8.47 S-1mM-1 for syringaldazine oxidation at optimum pH 4.0 and 40 °C. Laccase activity was completely inhibited by lead (II) ion, mercury (II) ion, sodium dodecyl sulphate, sodium azide and 1,4 dithiothretiol and induced significantly by manganese (II) ion and rhamnolipid. After treating BRW with laccase, the concentrations of PAHs and phenolic contaminants of 1144 μg/L and 46160 μg/L were reduced to 96 μg/L and 16100 μg/L, respectively. The ability of laccase to effectively degrade PAHs in the presence of different phenolic compounds implies that phenolic contaminants may play a role in PAHs degradation. After 240 h, organic contaminants were removed from BRW in the following order: phenol >2,4-dinitrophenol > 2-methyl-4,6-dinitrophenol > 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol > acenaphthene > fluorine > phenanthrene > fluoranthene > pyrene > anthracene > chrysene > naphthalene > benzo(a)anthracene > benzo(a)pyrene > benzo(b)fluoranthene > pentachlorophenol > indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene > benzo(j) fluoranthene > benzo[k]fluoranthène. The multiple contaminant remediation from the BRW by enzymatic method, clearly suggests that the laccase can be used as a bioremediation tool for the treatment of wastewater from various industries.

Abstract
Cellulose, starch, chitosan, polylactic acid, and polyhydroxyalkanoates are seen as promising alternatives to conventional plastics in food packaging. However, the application of these biopolymers in the food packaging industry on a commercial scale is limited due to their poor performance and processing characteristics and high production cost. This review aims to provide an insight into the recent advances in research that address these limitations. Loading of nanofillers into polymer matrix could improve thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties of biopolymers. Blending of biopolymers also offers the possibility of acquiring newer materials with desired characteristics. However, nanofillers tend to agglomerate when loaded above an optimum level in the polymer matrix. This article throws light on different methods adopted by researchers to achieve uniform dispersion of nanofillers in bionanocomposites. Furthermore, different processing methods available for converting biopolymers into different packaging forms are discussed. In addition, the potential utilization of agricultural, brewery, and industrial wastes as feedstock for the production of biopolymers, and integrated biorefinery concept that not only keep the total production cost of biopolymers low but are also environment-friendly, are discussed. Finally, future research prospects in this field and the possible contribution of biopolymers to sustainable development are presented. This review will certainly be helpful to researchers working on sustainable food packaging, and companies exploring pilot projects to scale up biopolymer production for industrial applications.

Abstract
Due to the recent boom in urbanisation, economy, and global population, the amount of waste generated worldwide has increased tremendously. The World Bank estimates that global waste generation is expected to increase 70% by 2050. Disposal of waste is already a major concern as it poses risks to the environment, human health, and economy. To tackle this issue and maximise potential environmental, economic, and social benefits, waste valorisation - a value-adding process for waste materials - has emerged as a sustainable and efficient strategy. The major objective of waste valorisation is to transit to a circular economy and maximally alleviate hazardous impacts of waste. This review conducts bibliometric analysis to construct a co-occurrence network of research themes related to management of five major waste streams (i.e., food, agricultural, textile, plastics, and electronics). Modern valorisation technologies and their efficiencies are highlighted. Moreover, insights into improvement of waste valorisation technologies are presented in terms of sustainable environmental, social, and economic performances. This review summarises highlighting factors that impede widespread adoption of waste valorisation, such as technology lock-in, optimisation for local conditions, unfavourable regulations, and low investments, with the aim of devising solutions that explore practical, feasible, and sustainable means of waste valorisation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND β-amylase (EC 3.2.1.2) is an exo-enzyme that shows high specificity for cleaving the α-1,4-glucosidic linkage of starch from the non-reducing end, thereby liberating maltose. In this study, we heterologously expressed and characterized a novel β-amylase from Bacillus aryabhattai. RESULTS The amino acid-sequence alignment showed that the enzyme shared the highest sequence identity with β-amylase from Bacillus flexus (80.73%) followed by Bacillus cereus (71.38%). Structural comparison revealed the existence of an additional starch-binding domain (SBD) at the C-terminus of B. aryabhattai β-amylase, which is notably different from plant β-amylases. The recombinant enzyme purified 4.7-fold to homogeneity, with a molecular weight of ~ 57.6 kDa and maximal activity at pH 6.5 and 50 °C. Notably, the enzyme exhibited the highest specific activity (3798.9 U/mg) among reported mesothermal microbial β-amylases and the highest specificity for soluble starch, followed by corn starch. Kinetic analysis showed that the Km and kcat values were 9.9 mg/mL and 116961.1 s- 1, respectively. The optimal reaction conditions to produce maltose from starch resulted in a maximal yield of 87.0%. Moreover, molecular docking suggested that B. aryabhattai β-amylase could efficiently recognize and hydrolyze maltotetraose substrate. CONCLUSIONS These results suggested that B. aryabhattai β-amylase could be a potential candidate for use in the industrial production of maltose from starch.

Abstract
Processes for the enzymatic hydrolysis of polysaccharides in biorefineries are becoming increasingly important. The complex network of reactions involved in polysaccharide hydrolysis can be described by stochastic models that advance in steps of time. Such models have the potential to be important tools for guiding process design and operation, and several have been developed over the last two decades. We evaluate these models. Many of the current stochastic models for the hydrolysis of colloidal polysaccharides use empirical parameters that have no recognized biological meaning. Only one model uses classical parameters of enzyme kinetics, namely specificity constants and saturation constants. Recent stochastic models for the hydrolysis of insoluble cellulose give valuable insights into the molecular-level phenomenon that limit hydrolysis rates. We conclude that, if stochastic models of enzymatic polysaccharide hydrolysis are to become widely used tools for guiding process development, then further improvements are required.

Abstract
The anaerobic digestion is a process widely recognized as an interesting alternative for the treatment and stabilization of residual organic substrates. However, several technical limitations were observed based on the characteristics of the organic matter submitted to the process, such as the presence of high concentrations of soluble sugars or fats. The technology of anaerobic digestion in multiple stages is described as a viable option in the control of variables, optimizing the environmental conditions of the main microorganisms involved in the process, assuring high solid removal and methane production, besides allowing a higher energy yield through the generation of molecular fuel hydrogen. Several studies reviewed the process of anaerobic digestion in multiple stages in the treatment of food waste, although few report its use applied directly to agroindustrial residues. Thus, the present work aims to review the literature evaluating the scenario and viability of the multi-stage anaerobic digestion process applied to agroindustrial effluents. Effluents such as manipueira, vinasse, and dairy wastewater are substrates that present high yields when treated by AD processes with stage separation. The high concentration of easily fermentable sugars results in a high production of molecular hydrogen (co-product of the production of volatile acids in the acid phase) and methane (methanogenic phase). The great challenges related to the development of the sector are focused on the stability of the composition and yield of hydrogen in the acid phase, besides the problems resulting from the treatment of complex residues. Thus, the present study suggests that future works should focus on the technologies of new microorganisms and optimization of process parameters, providing maturation and scale-up of the two-stage anaerobic digestion technique.

Abstract
Due to the non-renewable nature of fossil fuels, microbial fermentation is considered a sustainable approach for chemical production using glucose, xylose, menthol, and other complex carbon sources represented by lignocellulosic biomass. Among these, xylose, methanol, arabinose, glycerol, and other alternative feedstocks have been identified as superior non-food sustainable carbon substrates that can be effectively developed for microbe-based bioproduction. Corynebacterium glutamicum is a model gram-positive bacterium that has been extensively engineered to produce amino acids and other chemicals. Recently, in order to reduce production costs and avoid competition for human food, C. glutamicum has also been engineered to broaden its substrate spectrum. Strengthening endogenous metabolic pathways or assembling heterologous ones enables C. glutamicum to rapidly catabolize a multitude of carbon sources. This review summarizes recent progress in metabolic engineering of C. glutamicum toward a broad substrate spectrum and diverse chemical production. In particularly, utilization of lignocellulosic biomass-derived complex hybrid carbon source represents the futural direction for non-food renewable feedstocks was discussed.

Abstract
Starch based bio-latex has been widely researched in the coating paper area for the purpose of partial replacement of petroleum-based binders. In this paper, a green and facile ball milling pretreatment was proposed to modify the starch granules before α-amylase hydrolysis by breaking up their crystalline structure, thus improving the accessibility and susceptibility of amylase into starch structure. It was found that the improved hydrolysis process after 8 h ball milling can generate suitable degree of polymerization of polysaccharides or oligosaccharides, which further facilitated the following H2O2 oxidation and SHMP crosslinking processes. In addition, a mechanism was also demonstrated to illustrate the improvement induced by ball milling pretreatment. The prepared bio-latex with crosslinking-structure performed excellent adhesive properties when substituted 25 % of petroleum-based latex during paper coating application, which showed great potential in improving the economic, cost, and environment benefits of traditional production of coated paper.
