Abstract
Phocaeicola vulgatus (formerly Bacteroides vulgatus), an anaerobic gut bacterium, produces several organic acids. Research on P. vulgatus is still in its infancy. However, a detailed understanding of P. vulgatus growth and metabolism is essential for its assessment as an organic acid producer. Media variations, including different initial glucose and NH4Cl concentrations and osmolalities, are significant means to yield higher organic acid titers. Furthermore, examining different nitrogen and carbon sources is important to evaluate the potential of P. vulgatus for growth on renewable resources. Cultivations were performed in an in-house built device for anaerobic online-monitoring of fluorescence and scattered light in microtiter plates. Results revealed that the highest organic acid concentrations were reached while using galactose, glucose, or xylose as a carbon source, high osmolalities, and 0.25 g L-1 NH4Cl. In addition, the organic acid composition changed with changing carbon and nitrogen sources. P. vulgatus was successfully further characterized, thereby contributing to a faster characterization of other anaerobic strains and paving the way for anaerobic organic acid production.

Abstract
Lactic acid (LA) is a crucial chemical which has been widely used for industrial application. Microbial fermentation is the dominant pathway for LA production and has been regarded as the promising technology. In recent years, many studies on LA production from various organic wastes have been published, which provided alternative ways to reduce the LA production cost, and further recycle organic wastes. However, few researchers focused on industrial application of this technology due to the knowledge gap and some uncertainties. In this review, the recent advances, basic knowledge and limitations of LA fermentation from organic wastes are discussed, the challenges and suitable envisaged solutions for enhancing LA yield and productivity are provided to realize industrial application of this technology, and also some perspectives are given to further valorize the LA fermentation processes from organic wastes. This review can be a useful guidance for industrial LA production from organic wastes on a sustainable view.

Abstract
Erythritol, as a new type of natural sweetener, has been widely used in food, medical, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and other fields due to its unique physical and chemical properties and physiological functions. In recent years, with the continuous development of strategies such as synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, omics-based systems biology and high-throughput screening technology, people's understanding of the erythritol biosynthesis pathway has gradually deepened, and microbial cell factories with independent modification capabilities have been successfully constructed. In this review, the cheap feedstocks for erythritol synthesis are introduced in detail, the environmental factors affecting the synthesis of erythritol and its regulatory mechanism are described, and the tools and strategies of metabolic engineering involved in erythritol synthesis are summarized. In addition, the study of erythritol derivatives is helpful in expanding its application field. Finally, the challenges that hinder the effective production of erythritol are discussed, which lay a foundation for the green, efficient and sustainable production of erythritol in the future and breaking through the bottleneck of production.

Abstract
Lactic acid is a versatile chemical with wide application in many industries. It can be produced by the fermentation of different sugars by various lactobacilli and investigations on lactic acid production from different substrates and by different strains are still in progress. The present study aimed to study lactic acid production from lactose by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum AC 11S and to choose a mathematical model describing in the best way the experimental data obtained. The influence of initial substrate concentration was investigated, and optimal pH and temperature were determined. An unstructured mathematical model was developed comprising equations for bacterial growth, substrate consumption, and product formation. The model was solved with different terms for specific growth rates considering substrate and/or product inhibition. The best bacterial growth and lactic acid production were achieved at pH = 6.5 and 30 °C. Production of lactic acid was mainly growth-associated, and at initial substrate concentration over 15 g/L, a considerable product inhibition was observed. The parameters of different models were determined and compared. The modified Gompertz equation gave the best fit when solving only the equation for biomass growth at different initial substrate concentrations. Solving the entire set of differential equations for bacterial growth, substrate consumption, and product formation, the best results were obtained when using a variant of the logistic equation for biomass growth. This variant included a term for product inhibition and described in the best way all experimental data. Solving the model for different biomass concentrations showed that an increase in biomass led to a shorter lag phase and the stationary phase was reached faster. The results obtained, optimum conditions and the kinetic model, are good bases for studying pH-controlled fermentation, as well as a continuous process.

Abstract
Livestock and poultry wastewater poses a potent risk factor for environmental pollution accelerating disease load and premature deaths. It is characterized by high chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, suspended solids, heavy metals, pathogens, and antibiotics, among other contaminants. These contaminants have a negative impact on the quality of soil, groundwater, and air, and is a potential hazard to human health. Depending on the specific characteristics of wastewater, such as the type and concentration of pollutants present; several physical, chemical and biological strategies have been developed for wastewater treatment. This review aims at providing comprehensive overview of the profiling of livestock wastewater from the dairy, swine and poultry sub-sectors along with the biological (annamox and genetically modified bacteria) and physico-chemical treatment methodologies, and valorisation for the generation of value-added products such as bioplastics, biofertilizers, biohydrogen and microalgal-microbial fuel cells. Additionally, future perspectives for efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment are contemplated.

Abstract
Efficient extracellular electron transfer (EET) of exoelectrogens is critical for practical applications of various bioelectrochemical systems. However, the low efficiency of electron transfer remains a major bottleneck. In this study, a modular engineering strategy, including broadening the sources of the intracellular electron pool, enhancing intracellular nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) regeneration, and promoting electron release from electron pools, was developed to redirect electron flux into the electron transfer chain in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Among them, four genes include gene SO1522 encoding a lactate transporter for broadening the sources of the intracellular electron pool, gene gapA encoding a glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and gene mdh encoding a malate dehydrogenase in the central carbon metabolism for enhancing intracellular NADH regeneration, and gene ndh encoding NADH dehydrogenase on the inner membrane for releasing electrons from intracellular electron pools into the electron-transport chain. Upon assembly of the four genes, electron flux was directly redirected from the electron donor to the electron-transfer chain, achieving 62% increase in intracellular NADH levels, which resulted in a 3.5-fold enhancement in the power density from 59.5 ± 3.2 mW/m2 (wild type) to 270.0 ± 12.7 mW/m2 (recombinant strain). This study confirmed that redirecting electron flux from the electron donor to the electron-transfer chain is a viable approach to enhance the EET rate of S. oneidensis.

Abstract
The antifungal effect of metabolites produced by a new strain of Lactiplantibacillus (Lpb.) plantarum LPP703, isolated from naturally fermented yak yogurt, was investigated. The results showed that Lpb. plantarum LPP703 significantly inhibited four fungal species, including Penicillium sp., Rhizopus delemar, Aspergillus flavus, and Aspergillus niger. The metabolites produced after 20 h of Lpb. plantarum LPP703 fermentation showed the highest antifungal activity against Penicillium sp. Compared with the control group, the Lpb. plantarum LPP703 metabolites-treated Penicillium sp. spores were stained red by propidium iodide, indicating that the cell membrane of the fungal spores was damaged. Moreover, the antifungal effect of the Lpb. plantarum LPP703 metabolites on Penicillium sp. was not changed after heating or treatment with various proteases, but showed a sharp decrease when the pH value was regulated to 5.0 or above. The oleamide, trans-cinnamic acid, and citric acid were the three most abundant in the Lpb. plantarum LPP703 metabolites. Molecular docking predicated that the oleamide interacted with the active site of lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase (CYP51, a crucial enzyme for fungal membrane integrity) through hydrogen bonds and had the lowest docking score, representing the strongest binding affinity to CYP51. Taken together, the metabolites from a new strain of Lpb. plantarum, LPP703, had potent antifungal activity against Penicillium sp., which might be associated with the damage of the active ingredient to fungal membrane integrity. This study indicated that Lpb. plantarum LPP703 and its metabolites might act as biological control agents to prevent fungal growth in the food industry.

Abstract
Lactobacilli have been widely concerned for decades. Bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus have been commonly employed in fermented food to improve the appearance, smell, and taste of food or prolong its shelf-life. They comprise 261 species (by March 2020) that are highly diverse at the phenotypic, ecological, and genotypic levels. Some Lactobacilli strains have been documented to be essential probiotics, which are defined as a group of living microorganisms that are beneficial to the health of the host when ingested in sufficiency. However, the characterization, high-density fermentation, and the production of a directed vat set (DVS) starter of Lactobacilli strains used in the food industry have not been systematically reported. This paper mainly focuses on reviewing Lactobacilli as functional starter cultures in the food industry, including different molecular techniques for identification at the species and strain levels, methods for evaluating Lactobacilli properties, enhancing their performance and improving the cell density of Lactobacilli, and the production techniques of DVS starter of Lactobacilli strains. Moreover, this review further discussed the existing problems and future development prospects of Lactobacilli in the food industry. The viability and stability of Lactobacilli in the food industry and gastrointestinal environment are critical challenges at the industrial scale. The new production equipment and technology of DVS starter of Lactobacilli strains will have the potential for large-scale application, for example, developing low-temperature spray drying, freezing granulation drying, and spray freeze-drying.

Abstract
Microalgae and cyanobacteria are photosynthetic microorganisms' sources of renewable biomass that can be used for bioplastic production. These microorganisms have high growth rates, and contrary to other feedstocks, such as land crops, they do not require arable land. In addition, they can be used as feedstock for bioplastic production while not competing with food sources (e.g., corn, wheat, and soy protein). In this study, we review the macromolecules from microalgae and cyanobacteria that can serve for the production of bioplastics, including starch and glycogen, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), cellulose, polylactic acid (PLA), and triacylglycerols (TAGs). In addition, we focus on the cultivation of microalgae and cyanobacteria for wastewater treatment. This approach would allow reducing nutrient supply for biomass production while treating wastewater. Thus, the combination of wastewater treatment and the production of biomass that can serve as feedstock for bioplastic production is discussed. The comprehensive information provided in this communication would expand the scope of interdisciplinary and translational research.

Abstract
Lactic acid is the meekest hydroxyl carboxylic acid (2-hydroxy propionic acid) which is a colorless, odorless, hygroscopic, organic compound with no toxic effect, a very inevitable and versatile chemical used in the Food, cosmetics, textile, and pharmaceutical industries for very long years. Lactic acid was produced as non-racemic when specific microbial strains were used; therefore, microbial fermentation gained more attention. Albeit the substratum used for the microbial fermentation price is much exorbitant. Wherefore, identifying the best and cheap substrates is a bottleneck for the scientific community. Sugarcane molasses is the best source of components for microbial growth and cheap raw material for Lactic acid fermentation. This study produced sustainable lactic acid from sugarcane molasses by the Bacillus amyloliquefaciens J2V2AA strain with a higher production of 178 gm/L/24 h. The produced lactic acid was characterized and analyzed by UV-Visible Spectrum, FTIR Spectrum, TLC, and HPLC.

Abstract
Lactate, a hydroxycarboxylic acid commercially produced by microbial fermentation, is widely applied in diverse industrial fields. Lactate exists in two stereoisomeric forms (d-lactate and l-lactate). d-Lactate and l-lactate are often simultaneously present in many biological samples. Therefore, a biosensor able to detect both d- and l-lactate is required but previously unavailable. Herein, an allosteric transcription factor LldR from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, which responds to both d-lactate and l-lactate, was combined with amplified luminescent proximity homogeneous assay technology to develop a d,l-lactate biosensor. The proposed biosensor was optimized by mutation of DNA sequence in binding site of LldR. The optimized biosensor BLac-6 can accurately detect the concentration of lactate independent on ratio of the two isomers in pending test samples. The biosensor was also tentatively used in quantitative analysis of d-lactate, l-lactate, or d,l-lactate in fermentation samples produced by three recombinant strains of Klebsiella oxytoca. With its desirable properties, the biosensor BLac-6 may be a potential choice for monitoring the concentration of lactate during industrial fermentation.

Abstract
The second (lignocellulosic biomass and industrial wastes) and third (algal biomass) generation feedstocks gained substantial interest as a source of various value-added chemicals, produced by fermentation. Lactic acid is a valuable platform chemical with both traditional and newer applications in many industries. The successful fractionation, separation, and hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass result in sugars' rich raw material for lactic acid fermentation. This review paper aims to summarize the investigations and progress in the last 5 years in lactic acid production from inexpensive and renewable resources. Different aspects are discussed-the type of raw materials, pretreatment and detoxification methods, lactic acid-producers (bacteria, fungi, and yeasts), use of genetically manipulated microorganisms, separation techniques, different approaches of process organization, as well as main challenges, and possible solutions for process optimization.

Abstract
This study optimized the co-valorization of corn cob wastes (CCW) and dairy wastewater for simultaneous saccharification and lactic acid (LA) production (sDWW-SSF). Subsequently, the kinetics of Lactobacillus plantarum growth and LA production was assessed using the optimized conditions under microaerophilic (sDWW-SSFmicroaerophilic) and anaerobic (sDWW-SSFanaerobic) conditions, and thereafter compared to De Man, Rogosa and Sharpe (MRS) medium modified with pretreated CCW (mMRS-SSFmicroaerophilic). Optimized sDWW-SSF conditions produced maximum LA concentration and conversion of 11.15 ± 0.42 g/L and 18.90 ± 0.75%, respectively. Kinetic studies revealed that although the mMRS-SSFmicroaerophilic system obtained a higher maximum specific growth rate (μmax) and maximum potential LA concentration (Pm) compared to the wastewater-based bioprocesses, the data obtained for the latter were comparable when taking the resources and costs into consideration. These findings represent the potential to eliminate the use of valuable resources in lignocellulosic bioprocesses and provide insights on innovation towards driving a sustainable economy in line with the food-energy-water nexus.

Abstract
Microalgae have been studied and tested for over 70 years. However, biodiesel, the prime target of the algal industry, has suffered from low competitiveness and current steps toward banning the internal combustion engine all over the world. Meanwhile, interest in reducing CO2 emissions has grown as the world has witnessed disasters caused by global warming. In this situation, in order to maximize the benefits of the microalgal industry and surmount current limitations, new breakthroughs are being sought. First, drop-in fuel, mandatory for the aviation and maritime industries, has been discussed as a new product. Second, methods to secure stable and feasible outdoor cultivation focusing on CO2 sequestration were investigated. Lastly, the need for an integrated refinery process to simultaneously produce multiple products has been discussed. While the merits of microalgae industry remain valid, further investigations into these new frontiers would put algal industry at the core of future bio-based economy.

Abstract
Lactic acid (LA) is an essential commodity chemical, with bio-based LA ruling the market share. Macroalgae are a desirable feedstock for LA fermentation due to their high carbohydrate and low lignin content. Ulva sp., Gracilaria sp., and Sargassum cristaefolium were evaluated as a feedstock for LA fermentation. Mild acid-thermal hydrolysis (sulfuric acid concentrations < 5%) resulted in superior reducing sugar recovery. Gracilaria sp. attained maximum reducing sugar recovery (0.39 g/g biomass) and lactate yield (0.94 g/g). LA fermentation of fucose-rich hydrolysate of Sargassum cristaefolium is demonstrated for the first time, with 0.81 g/g LA yield and 0.36 g/g reducing sugars. Ulva sp. attained 0.21 g/g reducing sugars and 0.85 g/g LA yield. The efficiency of macroalgae for lactate bioconversion was in the order: red macroalgae > green macroalgae > brown macroalgae. L. rhamnosus and L. plantarum could efficaciously utilize seaweed sugars for LA production. Macroalgae can potentially replace lignocellulosic biomass as a feedstock in LA fermentation.

Abstract
Microalgae-based carbon dioxide (CO2) biofixation and biorefinery are the most efficient methods of biological CO2 reduction and reutilization. The diversification and high-value byproducts of microalgal biomass, known as microalgae-based biorefinery, are considered the most promising platforms for the sustainable development of energy and the environment, in addition to the improvement and integration of microalgal cultivation, scale-up, harvest, and extraction technologies. In this review, the factors influencing CO2 biofixation by microalgae, including microalgal strains, flue gas, wastewater, light, pH, temperature, and microalgae cultivation systems are summarized. Moreover, the biorefinery of Chlorella biomass for producing biofuels and its byproducts, such as fine chemicals, feed additives, and high-value products, are also discussed. The technical and economic assessments (TEAs) and life cycle assessments (LCAs) are introduced to evaluate the sustainability of microalgae CO2 fixation technology. This review provides detailed insights on the adjusted factors of microalgal cultivation to establish sustainable biological CO2 fixation technology, and the diversified applications of microalgal biomass in biorefinery. The economic and environmental sustainability, and the limitations and needs of microalgal CO2 fixation, are discussed. Finally, future research directions are provided for CO2 reduction by microalgae.

Abstract
This work aimed to study the efficiency of polyvinyl-alcohol-immobilized Actinobacillus succinogenes ATCC55618 for succinic acid (SA) production. Batch fermentation (pH 7, 45% CO2 gas at 0.04 vvm) using glucose (40 g L-1) resulted in SA titer, 26.7 g L-1; productivity, 3.33 g L-1h-1; yield, 0.621 g g-1. Fed-batch mode with cyclic extrication of SA from the medium markedly enhanced the yield to 0.699 g g-1 and concentration to 59.5 g L-1. Batch fermentation using sugars derived from Chlorella vulgaris ESP-31 without yeast extract gave a SA productivity, concentration, and yield of 1.82 g L-1h-1, 36.1 g L-1, and 0.720 g g-1, respectively. Furthermore, continuous fermentation (at 6 h HRT) with microalgal sugar improved the productivity and yield to 3.53 g L-1h-1 and 0.62 g g-1, respectively, which is comparable to those obtained by using glucose. This study reports the highest productivity for SA fermentation using microalgae-derived sugars.

Dilute acid pretreatment of the OFI cladodes (OFIC) was performed for extracting maximum fermentable sugars by optimizing process parameters using statistical optimization method. The best results were obtained with HCl 1% (v/v), temperature 120 °C, residence time 40 min, granulation 350 µm and substrate loading 5% (w/v), the sugar concentration reached 24 g/L with low concentration of hydroxymethylfurfural. The feasibility of producing lactic acid from OFI fruit peel (OFIFP) as a source of carbon was also investigated. Lactobacillus plantarum was shown to have a capacity for lactic acid production from OFIC350 (granulation 350 µm) hydrolysate and OFIFP extract without detoxification. The highest lactic acid yields of 0.46 and 0.78 g/g were obtained from enzymatic hydrolysate of pretreated OFIC350 and OFIFP extract, respectively.

Abstract
Lactic acid is an important platform chemical used in the food, agriculture, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. It serves as a building block for the production of polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable polymer, which can replace traditional petroleum-based plastics and help to reduce environmental pollution. Cost-effective production of optically pure l- and d-lactic acids is necessary to achieve a quality and thermostable PLA product. This paper evaluates research advances in the bioproduction of l- and d-lactic acids using microbial fermentation. Special emphasis is given to the development of metabolically engineered microbial strains and processes tailored to alternative and flexible feedstock concepts such as: lignocellulose, glycerol, C1-gases, and agricultural-food industry byproducts. Alternative fermentation concepts that can improve lactic acid production are discussed. The potential use of inducible gene expression systems for the development of biosensors to facilitate the screening and engineering of lactic acid-producing microorganisms is discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exhausted sugar beet pulp pellets (ESBPP) were used as raw material for lactic acid (LA) fermentation. The enzymatic hydrolysis of ESBPP was performed with the solid obtained after the fungal solid-state fermentation of ESBPP as a source of hydrolytic enzymes. Subsequently, a medium rich in glucose and arabinose was obtained, which was used to produce LA by fermentation. For LA production, two Lactobacillus strains were assayed and the effects of the supplementation of the hydrolysate with a nitrogen source and the mode of pH regulation of the fermentation were investigated. Moreover, a kinetic model for LA fermentation by Lactobacillus plantarum of ESBPP hydrolysates was developed. RESULTS L. plantarum produced a LA concentration 34% higher than that produced by L. casei. The highest LA concentration (30 g L-1 ) was obtained with L. plantarum when the hydrolysate was supplemented with 5 g L-1 yeast extract and the pH was controlled with CaCO3 . The concentration of acetic acid differed depending on the concentration of CaCO3 added, producing its maximum value with 27 g L-1 CaCO3 . The proposed kinetic model was able to predict the evolution of substrates and products depending on the variation of the pH in the hydrolysate, according to the amount of CaCO3 added. CONCLUSIONS ESBPP can be revalorised to produce LA. A pure LA stream or a mixture of LA and acetic acid, depending on the pH control method of the fermentation, can be produced. Thus, this control is of great interest depending on the destination of the effluent. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Lactic acid and its derivatives are widely used in pharmaceutical, leather, textile and food industries. However, until now there have been few systematic reports on fed-batch fermentation for efficient production and high concentration of l-lactic acid by lactic acid bacteria. This study describes the obtainment of L (+) lactic acid from sucrose using the Lactobacillus casei Ke11 strain through different feeding strategies using an accessible pH neutralizer such as CaCO3. The exponential feeding strategy can increase lactic acid production and productivity (175.84 g/L and 3.74 g/L/h, respectively) with a 95% yield, avoiding inhibition by high initial substrate concentration and, combined with the selected agent controller, avoids the cellular stress that could be caused by the high osmotic pressure of the culture media. The purification of the acid using charcoal and celite, followed by the use of a cation exchange column proved to be highly efficient, allowing a high yield of lactic acid, high removal of sugars and proteins. The described process shows great potential for the production of lactic acid, as well as the simple, efficient and low-cost purification method. This way, this work is useful to the large-scale fermentation of L. casei Ke11 for production of l-lactic acid.

Abstract
Monascus pigments are a kind of high-quality natural edible pigments fermented by Monascus filamentous fungi, which have been widely used in food, cosmetics, medicine, textiles, dyes and chemical industries as active functional ingredients. Moreover, Monascus pigments have a good application prospect because of a variety of biological functions such as antibacterial, antioxidation, anti-inflammatory, regulating cholesterol, and anti-cancer. However, the low productivity and color value of pigments restrict their development and application. In this review, we introduced the categories, structures, biosynthesis and functions of Monascus pigments, and summarized the current methods for improving the productivity and color value of pigments, including screening and mutagenesis of strains, optimization of fermentation conditions, immobilized fermentation, mixed fermentation, additives, gene knockout and overexpression technologies, which will help to develop the foundation for the industrial production of Monascus pigments.

Abstract
This study describes the impact of utilising different strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for the fermentation of papaya puree and their effect on the quality parameters and bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds during simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Papaya was processed into puree; pasteurised and fermented at 37 °C for 2 days; and stored for 7 days at 4 °C using LAB strains Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 75 (L75*D2; L75*D7), Weissella cibaria64 (W64*D2; W64*D7) and Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides 56 (L56*D2; L56*D7), respectively. Non-fermented samples at 0 (PPD0), 2 (PPD2) and 7 days (PPD7) served as controls. pH was reduced with fermentation and was lowest in L56*D2 (3.03) and L75*D2 (3.16) after storage. The colour change (ΔE) increased with the fermentation and storage of purees; L75*D7 showed the highest ΔE (13.8), and its sourness reduced with storage. The fermentation by W64*D7 and L75*D7 increased the % recovery of chlorogenic, vanillic, syringic, ellagic, ferulic acids, catechin, epicatechin and quercetin in the intestinal fraction compared to the L56*D7 and PPD7. Fermentation by W64*D7 and L75*D7 significantly improved the antioxidant capacity of the dialysed fraction compared to the L56*D7 or PPD7. L56*D7-fermented papaya puree showed the highest inhibitory effect of α-glucosidase activity followed by L75*D7. L75*D7 had a significantly higher survival rate. LAB fermentation affected the bioacessibilities of phenolics and was strain dependent. This study recommends the use of Lpb. plantarum 75 for fermenting papaya puree.

Abstract
Bacteria have been used in the food industry to produce flavors, dyes, thickeners, and to increase food value, because bacterial fermentations favor the obtention of different metabolites such as tannins and different nutritional compounds in food. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum was one the first species to be studied for industrial purposes, and its efficacy to obtaining tannins using fermentation processes. Bacterial fermentation helps to obtain a product with an added value of better quality and without the need to use strong solvents that can reduce their quality and safety. To release tannins, it is necessary to subject the substrate to different conditions to activate the enzyme tannin acyl hydrolase (tannase). The tannase-released compounds can have beneficial effects on health such as antioxidant, anticancer and cardioprotective properties, among others. Therefore, this review analyzes tannase release and other metabolites by fermentation processes.

Abstract
Biowaste valorization into lactic acid (LA) by treatment with indigenous microbiota has recently gained considerable attention. LA production from date pulp waste provides an opportunity for resource recovery, reduces environmental issues, and possibly turns biomass into wealth. This study aimed to compare the performance of batch and cyclic fermentation processes in LA production with and without enzymatic pretreatment. The fermentation studies were conducted in the absence of an external inoculum source (relying on indigenous microbiota) and without the addition of nutrients. The highest LA volumetric productivity (3.56 g/liter/day), yield (0.07 g/g-TS), and concentration (21.66 g/L) were attained with enzymatic pretreated date pulp in the cyclic-mode fermentation at the optimized conditions. The productivity rate of LA was enhanced in the cyclic-mode as compared to the batch process. Enzymatic pretreatment increased the digestibility of cellulose that led to higher LA yield. An Artificial Neural Network model was developed to optimize the process parameters and to predict the LA concentration from date pulp waste in both fermentation processes. The main advantage of the ANN approach is the ability to perform quick predictions without resource-consuming experiments. The model predicted optimal conditions well and demonstrated good agreement between experimental and predicted data.

Abstract
The stability of fermentative hydrogen production from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) was evaluated in this work using a strategy of effluent recycling. Three pretreatment conditions were applied on the recycled effluent: a) no heat shock treatment, b) one initial heat shock treatment (90 °C, 30 min) and c) systematic heat shock treatment at the beginning of each fermentation. When a systematic heat shock was applied, a maximal hydrogen yield of 17.2 ± 3.8 mLH2/gVS was attained. The hydrogen productivity was improved by 331% reaching a stable value of 1.51 ± 0.29 mLH2/gVS/h, after 8 cycles of effluent recycling. This strategy caused a sharp decrease of diversity with stable co-dominance of hydrogen- and lactate-producing bacteria, ie. Clostridiales and Lactobacillales, respectively. For the other conditions, a sharp decrease of the hydrogen yields was observed showing the importance of applying a heat shock treatment for optimal hydrogen production with effluent recycling.

Abstract
Lactic acid is an organic compound produced via fermentation by different microorganisms that are able to use different carbohydrate sources. Lactic acid bacteria are the main bacteria used to produce lactic acid and among these, Lactobacillus spp. have been showing interesting fermentation capacities. The use of Bacillus spp. revealed good possibilities to reduce the fermentative costs. Interestingly, lactic acid high productivity was achieved by Corynebacterium glutamicum and E. coli, mainly after engineering genetic modification. Fungi, like Rhizopus spp. can metabolize different renewable carbon resources, with advantageously amylolytic properties to produce lactic acid. Additionally, yeasts can tolerate environmental restrictions (for example acidic conditions), being the wild-type low lactic acid producers that have been improved by genetic manipulation. Microalgae and cyanobacteria, as photosynthetic microorganisms can be an alternative lactic acid producer without carbohydrate feed costs. For lactic acid production, it is necessary to have substrates in the fermentation medium. Different carbohydrate sources can be used, from plant waste as molasses, starchy, lignocellulosic materials as agricultural and forestry residues. Dairy waste also can be used by the addition of supplementary components with a nitrogen source.
