Abstract
The industrialization of hydrogen production through dark fermentation of food waste faces challenges, such as low yields and unpredictable fermentation processes. Biochar has emerged as a promising green additive to enhance hydrogen production in dark fermentation. Our study demonstrated that the introduction of Fe-modified biochar (Fe-L600) significantly boosted hydrogen production during thermophilic dark fermentation of food waste. The addition of Fe-L600 led to a remarkable 31.19% increase in hydrogen yield and shortened the time needed for achieving stabilization of hydrogen production from 18 h to 12 h. The metabolite analysis revealed an enhancement in the butyric acid pathway as the molar ratio of acetic acid to butyric acid decreased from 3.09 to 2.69 but hydrogen yield increased from 57.12 ± 1.48 to 76.78 ± 2.77 mL/g, indicating Fe-L600 improved hydrogen yield by regulating crucial metabolic pathways of hydrogen production. The addition of Fe-L600 also promoted the release of Fe2+ and Fe3+ and increased the concentrations of Fe2+ and Fe3+ in the fermentation system, which might promote the activity of hydrogenase and ferredoxin. Microbial community analysis indicated a substantial increase in the relative abundance of Thermoanaerobacterium after thermophilic dark fermentation. The relative abundances of microorganisms responsible for hydrolysis and acidogenesis were also observed to be improved in the system with Fe-L600 addition. This research provides a feasible strategy for improving hydrogen production of food waste and deepens the understanding of the mechanisms of biochar.

Abstract
In this consortium, DSM 1313 was responsible for degrading lignocellulose by cellulosome, while the highly efficient hydrogen-producing bacterium MJ1 consumed the sugar produced by DSM 1313 to grow and produce more hydrogen. The results showed that the maximum hydrogen production of 259.57 mL/g substrate was obtained at the inoculation ratio (OD600) of 2:1 (DSM 1313:MJ1) and substrate concentration of 10 g/L, 70.84 % higher than pure culture. Furthermore, MJ1 dominated the co-culture system by using various sugars resulting from the biodegradation of substrate, thereby relieving the inhibition of sugar on DSM 1313 and leading to more hydrogen production. In the co-culture system, the value of extracellular oxidation-reduction potential and the ratio of NAD+/NADH was lower than that of pure culture. Additionally, at the gene level, [NiFe]-hydrogenase and [FeFe]-hydrogenase related enzymes were significantly up-regulated, leading to a two-fold increase in hydrogenase activity of co-culture compared with pure culture.

Abstract
Staggering amounts of food waste are produced in Australia, and this review provides food waste based biorefinery opportunities in moving towards a circular economy in Australia. The current food waste scenario in Australia including an overview of primary food waste sources, government regulation, and current management practices is presented. The major food waste streams include fruit and vegetable (waste from wine grapes, citrus, apple, potato, and tomato), nuts (almond processing waste), seafood (Fish waste), dairy whey, sugarcane bagasse, and household and businesses. The composition of these waste streams indicated their potential for use in biorefineries to produce value-added products via various pathways combining direct extraction and biological and thermochemical conversion. Finally, the efforts made in Australia to utilize food waste as a resource, as well as the challenges and future directions to promote the development of concrete and commercially viable technologies for food waste biorefinery, are described.

Abstract
The staggering increase in pollution associated with a sharp tightening in global energy demand is a major concern for organic substances. Renewable biofuel production through simultaneous waste reduction is a sustainable approach to meet this energy demand. This study co-fermentation of dairy whey and SCB was performed using mixed and pure bacterial cultures of Salmonella bongori, Escherichia coli, and Shewanella oneidensis by dark fermentation process for hydrogen production. The maximum H2 production was 202.7 ± 5.5 H2/mL/L, 237.3 ± 6.0 H2/mL/L, and 198 ± 9.9 H2/mL/L obtained in fermentation reactions containing dairy whey, solid and liquid hydrolysis of pretreated sugarcane bagasse as mono-substrates. The H2 production was greater in co-substrate by 347.3 ± 18.5 H2/mL/L under optimized conditions (pH 7.0, temperature 37 °C, substrate concentration 30:50 g/L) than expected in mono-substrate conditions, which confirms that co-fermentation of different substrates enhances the H2 potential. Fermentation medium during bio-H2 production under GC analysis has stated that using mixed cultures in dark fermentation favored acetic acid and butyric acid. Co-substrate degradation produces ethyl alcohol, benzoic acid, propionic acid, and butanol as metabolic by-products. The difference in the treated and untreated substrate and carbon enrichment in the substrates was evaluated by FT-IR analysis. The present study justifies that rather than the usage of mono-substrate for bio-H2 production, the co-substrate provided highly stable H2 production by mixed bacterial cultures. Fabricate the homemade single-chamber microbial fuel cell to generate electricity. Abstract
The sustainable production of chemicals and biofuels from non-fossil carbon sources is considered key to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Clostridium sp. can convert various substrates, including the 1st-generation (biomass crops), the 2nd-generation (lignocellulosic biomass), and the 3rd-generation (C1 gases) feedstocks, into high-value products, which makes Clostridia attractive for biorefinery applications. However, the complexity of lignocellulosic catabolism and C1 gas utilization make it difficult to construct efficient production routes. Accordingly, this review highlights the advances in the development of three generations of feedstocks with Clostridia as cell factories. At the same time, more attention was given to using agro-industrial wastes (lignocelluloses and C1 gases) as the feedstocks, for which metabolic and process engineering efforts were comprehensively analyzed. In addition, the challenges of using agro-industrial wastes are also discussed. Lastly, several new synthetic biology tools and regulatory strategies are emphasized as promising technologies to be developed to address the aforementioned challenges in Clostridia and realize the efficient utilization of agro-industrial wastes.

Abstract
The global climate crisis and the ongoing increase in fossil-based fuels have led to an alternative solution of using biomass for fuel production. Sugarcane bagasse (SCB) is an agricultural residue with a global production of more than 100 million metric tons and it has various applications in a biorefinery concept. This review brings forth the composition, life cycle assessment, and various pretreatments for the deconstruction techniques of SCB for the production of valuable products. The ongoing research in the production of biofuels, biogas, and electricity utilizing the bagasse was elucidated. SCB is used in the production of carboxymethyl cellulose, pigment, lactic acid, levulinic acid, and xylooligosaccharides and it has prospective in meeting the demand for global energy and environmental sustainability.

Abstract
Present study aims at sustainable utilization of sugarcane bagasse (SCB) for production of valuable prebiotic xylooligosaccharides (XOS) along with second generation ethanol. Fractionation of SCB into hemicellulose rich liquid fraction and cellulose rich solid residue was achieved using alkaline treatment. Carbohydrate rich precipitate obtained from liquid fraction was utilized for XOS production using inhouse produced endoxylanase. XOS production from SCB xylan was optimized by employing response surface methodology. Under optimized conditions, maximum XOS yield was 227.72 mg/g of carbohydrate rich precipitates. The solid residue obtained after alkaline pretreatment was used for ethanol fermentation by prehydrolysis and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (P-SSF) process using cellulolytic enzyme cocktail and Saccharomyces cerevisiae SM1. Maximum ethanol concentration, productivity and yield were 79.76 ± 0.16 g/L, 0.83 g/L/h and 69.38%, respectively by employing P-SSF process. Based on the experimental data it can be predicted that bioconversion of 100 g raw SCB can yield 6.26 g of XOS (DP 2-DP 5), 15.95 g ethanol and 1.44 g of xylitol. Present investigation reports an integrated process for effective bioconversion of SCB into value added products by maximum utilization of cellulosic and hemicellulosic fractions simultaneously using indigenously produced fungal enzymes.

Abstract
Waste-to-hydrogen (WtH) technologies are proposed as a dual-purpose method for simultaneous non-fossil-fuel based hydrogen production and sustainable waste management. This work applied the life cycle assessment approach to evaluate the carbon saving potential of two main WtH technologies (gasification and fermentation) in comparison to the conventional hydrogen production method of steam methane reforming (SMR) powering fuel cell electric buses in Glasgow. It was shown that WtH technologies could reduce CO2-eq emissions per kg H2 by 50-69% as compared to SMR. Gasification treating municipal solid waste and waste wood had global warming potentials of 4.99 and 4.11 kg CO2-eq/kg H2 respectively, which were lower than dark fermentation treating wet waste at 6.6 kg CO2-eq/kg H2 and combined dark and photo fermentation at 6.4 kg CO2-eq/kg H2. The distance emissions of WtH-based fuel cell electric bus scenarios were 0.33-0.44 kg CO2-eq/km as compared to 0.89 kg CO2-eq/km for the SMR-based scenario.

Abstract
Lignin condensation reactions are hard to avoid or control during separation, which is a deterrent to lignin isolation and post-conversation, especially for the full utilization of lignocelluloses. Selective protection of β-aryl ether linkages in the isolation process is crucial to lignin valorization. Herein, a two-step acid/alkali separation method assisted with l-cysteine for eucalyptus lignin separation is developed, and the isolated l-cysteine lignins (LCLs) are comprehensively characterized by 2D NMR, 31P NMR, thioacidolysis, etc. Compared to the two-step control treatment, a much higher β-O-4 content is preserved without reducing the separation efficiency assisted by l-cysteine, which is also significantly higher than alkali lignin and kraft lignin. The results of hydrogenolysis show that LCLs generate a much higher monomer yield than that of control sample. Structural analysis of LCLs suggests that lignin condensation reaction, to some extent, is suppressed by adding l-cysteine during the two-step acid/alkali separation. Further, mechanistic studies using dimeric model compound reveals that l-cysteine may be the α-carbon protective agent in the two-step separation. The role of l-cysteine in the two-step lignin isolation method provides novel insights to the selective fractionation of lignin from biomass, especially for the full valorization of lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract
Lignin is by far the most abundant natural renewable aromatic polymer in nature, and its reserves are second only to cellulose. In addition to the rich carbon content, the structure of lignin contains functional groups such as benzene rings, methoxyl groups, and phenolic hydroxyl groups. Lignin degradation has become one of the high value, high quality and high efficiency methods to convert lignin, which is of great significance to alleviating the current energy shortage and environmental crisis. This article introduces the hydrolysis methods of lignin in acidic, alkaline, ionic liquids and supercritical fluids, reviews the heating rate, the source of lignin species and the effects of heating rate on the pyrolysis of lignin, and briefly describes the metal catalysis, oxidation methods such as electrochemical degradation and photocatalytic oxidation, and degradation reduction methods using hydrogen and hydrogen supply reagents. The lignin degradation methods for the preparation of fuels and chemicals are systematically summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of different methods, the selectivity under different conditions and the degradation efficiency of different catalytic combination systems are compared. In this paper, a new approach to improve the degradation efficiency is envisioned in order to contribute to the efficient utilization and high value conversion of lignin.

Abstract
In this study, Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum MJ2 and biochar were used to enhance thermophilic hydrogen production from sugarcane bagasse. MJ2 bioaugmentation notably increased the hydrogen production by 95.31%, which was further significantly improved by 158.10% by adding biochar. The addition of biochar promoted the degradation of substrate, improved the activities of hydrogenase and electron transfer system, and stimulated microbial growth and metabolism. Microbial community analysis showed that the relative abundance of Thermoanaerobacterium was significantly increased by bioaugmentation and further enriched by biochar. PICRUSt analysis showed that MJ2 combined with biochar promoted metabolic pathways related to substrate degradation and microbial metabolism. This study provides a novel enhancement method for hydrogen production of the cellulolytic microbial consortium by exogenous hydrogen-producing microorganism combined with biochar and deepens the understanding of its functional mechanism.

Abstract
The increase in global population size over the past 100 decades has doubled the requirements for energy resources. To mitigate the limited fossil fuel available, new clean energy sources being environmental sustainable for replacement of traditional energy sources are explored to supplement the current scarcity. Biomass containing lignin and cellulose is the main raw material to replace fossil energy given its abundance and lower emission of greenhouse gases and NOx when transformed into energy. Bacteria, fungi and algae decompose lignocellulose leading to generation of hydrogen, methane, bioethanol and biodiesel being the clean energy used for heating, power generation and the automobile industry. Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) uses microorganisms to decompose biomass in wastewater to generate electricity and remove heavy metals in wastewater. Biomass contains cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and other biomacromolecules which need hydrolyzation for conversion into small molecules by corresponding enzymes in order to be utilized by microorganisms. This paper discusses microbial decomposition of biomass into clean energy and the five major ways of clean energy production, and its economic benefits for future renewable energy security.
