Abstract
Microalgae are a diverse group of photosynthetic microorganisms that can be exploited to produce sustainable food and feed products, alleviate environmental pollution, or sequester CO2 to mitigate climate change, among other uses. To optimize resource use and integrate industrial waste streams, it is essential to consider factors such as the biology and cultivation parameters of the microalgal strains, as well as the cultivation system and processing technologies employed. This paper reviews the main commercial applications of microalgae (including cyanobacteria) and examines the biological and biotechnological aspects critical to the sustainable processing of microalgal biomass and its derived compounds. We also provide an up-to-date overview of the microalgal sector in Europe considering the strain, cultivation system and commercial application. We have identified 146 different microalgal-derived products from 66 European microalgae producers, and 49 additional companies that provide services and technologies, such as optimization and scalability of the microalgal production. The most widely cultivated microalga is 'spirulina' (Limnospira spp.), followed by Chlorella spp. and Nannochloropsis spp., mainly for human consumption and cosmetics. The preferred cultivation system in Europe is the photobioreactor. Finally, we discuss the logistic and regulatory challenges of producing microalgae at industrial scale, particularly in the European Union, and explore the potential of new genomic techniques and bioprocessing to foster a sustainable bioeconomy in the microalgal sector.

Abstract
Interactions between bacteria and microalgae have been studied in natural environments and in industrial consortia. As results of co-evolution for millions of years in nature, they have developed complex symbiotic relationships, including mutualism, commensalism and parasitism, the nature of which is decided by mechanisms of the interaction. There are two main types of molecular interactions between microalgae and bacteria: exchange of nutrients and release of signalling molecules. Nutrient exchange includes transport of organic carbon from microalgae to bacteria and nutrient nitrogen released from nitrogen-fixing bacteria to microalgae, as well as reciprocal supply of micronutrients such as B vitamins and iron. Signalling molecules such as phytohormones secreted by microalgae and quorum sensing molecules secreted by bacteria have been shown to positively affect growth and metabolism of the symbiotic partner. However, there are still a number of potential microalgae-bacteria interactions that have not been well explored, including cyclic peptides, other quorum signalling molecules, and extracellular vesicles involved in exchange of genetic materials. A more thorough understanding of these interactions may not only result in a deeper understanding of the relationships between these symbiotic organisms but also have potential biotechnological applications. Upon new mechanisms of interaction being identified and characterized, novel bioprocesses of synthetic ecology might be developed especially for wastewater treatment and production of biofertilizers and biofuels.

Abstract
The Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strain is a widely used model for studying algal lipid metabolism. This research investigated the effects of exogenous α-lipoic acid (ALA) on growth and lipid accumulation under salt stress. After 7-day ALA treatment, the biomass (0.95 g/L) and lipid content (0.47 g/L) increased by 163.8 % and 168.6 %, respectively, compared to the salt-stressed. After 7 days of culture, the relative expression levels of lipid biosynthesis genes, including ME, accD, ACSF3, and DGAT1 in the ALA + NaCl group were significantly upregulated by 2.8-, 4.3-, 3.6-, and 4.3-fold, respectively, compared with the control group. Biochemical analyses revealed increased primary/secondary metabolites and antioxidant levels, alongside reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS). Transcriptome analysis showed upregulation of genes involved in carbon fixation, lipid biosynthesis, pyruvate metabolism, carotenoid synthesis, and peroxisome pathways. These findings elucidate mechanisms by which ALA mitigated salt stress and enhanced lipid production, establishing key technologies for premium lipid feedstocks.

Abstract
Selenium is a crucial micronutrient for human well-being, with significant contributions to antioxidant, anti-ageing, and antiviral activities. However, over one billion people globally struggle with selenium deficiency, leading to a pressing need for selenium supplementation. Conventional selenium-enrich food from plants and animals provides challenges in achieving precise selenium supplementation. Thus, it is crucial to discover selenium carriers that can be cultured in a controlled environment. Multiple studies have shown that microalgae are excellent carriers for selenium enrichment due to their rapid growth, suitability for plant consumption, ease of industrialization, high efficiency in converting organic selenium, and many others. This review focuses on single-celled microalgae, comprehensively reviewing their metabolic pathway, biological transformation, and valuable forms of selenium. Additionally, it forecasts the current application status and prospects of selenium-enriched microalgae in agriculture and global human health. This review provides a reference for the industrial supply of precise selenium-rich raw materials.

Abstract
The increasing interest in hydrogel matrices and their diverse applications has fueled extensive research. However, single-component gels have a limited adjustable performance range, and multi-component gels raise concerns about biological safety, hindering their widespread use. This study focuses on harnessing high-speed shearing and ultrasound-assisted methods to incorporate active natural Haematococcus pluvialis (HP), creating novel composite hydrogels in conjunction with biological macromolecule gellan gum, and eliminating the need for structural modifications or chemical crosslinking. Rich astaxanthin, proteins, polysaccharides, and other components in HP can fill and promote the formation of a unified functional network. The study aims to explore the potential of HP as a rheology regulator and investigate its impact on the rheological properties of the gels. Various rheological models, including Power-Law, Herschel-Bulkley, and Arrhenius, were employed for comparative analysis. This pioneering report on gellan/HP hydrogels holds significant importance as they exhibit optimized elasticity, thermal stability, enhanced injectability, and self-recovery, making them suitable for a wide range of applications in specialized medical food and biomedicine.

Abstract
Arthospira platensis and Spirulina platensis microalgae are a rich source of pro-health metabolites (% d.m.): proteins (50.0-71.3/46.0-63.0), carbohydrates (16.0-20.0/12.0-17.0), fats (0.9-14.2/6.4-14.3), polyphenolic compounds and phenols (7.3-33.2/7.8-44.5 and 4.2/0.3 mg GAE/g), and flavonoids (1.9/0.2 QUE/g) used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations. This review summarises the research on the chemical profile, therapeutic effects in dermatological problems, application of Arthrospira and Spirulina microalgae, and contraindications to their use. The pro-health properties of these microalgae were analysed based on the relevant literature from 2019 to 2024. The antiviral mechanism of microalgal activity involves the inhibition of viral replication and enhancement of immunity. The anti-acne activity is attributed to alkaloids, alkanes, phenols, alkenes, phycocyanins, phthalates, tannins, carboxylic and phthalic acids, saponins, and steroids. The antibacterial activity generally depends on the components and structure of the bacterial cell wall. Their healing effect results from the inhibition of inflammatory and apoptotic processes, reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, stimulation of angiogenesis, and proliferation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes. The photoprotective action is regulated by amino acids, phlorotannins, carotenoids, mycosporins, and polyphenols inhibiting the production of tyrosinase, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and free oxygen radicals in fibroblasts and the stimulation of collagen production. Microalgae are promising molecular ingredients in innovative formulations of parapharmaceuticals and cosmetics used in the prophylaxis and therapy of dermatological problems. This review shows the application of spirulina-based commercial skin-care products as well as the safety and contraindications of spirulina use. Furthermore, the main directions for future studies of the pro-health suitability of microalgae exerting multidirectional effects on human skin are presented.

Abstract
Recent advances in research techniques have enabled rapid progress in the study of spirulina, an ancient edible cyanobacteria. Nowadays, spirulina species are classified into three genera: Spirulina, Arthrospira, and Limnospira. The latter now refers to industrially manufactured spirulina strains. Whole-genome sequencing revealed gene clusters involved in metabolite production, and the physiology of spirulina. Omics technologies demonstrated the absence of hazardous compounds in spirulina cells, confirming the safety of this biomass as a food product. Spirulina is a good source of different chemicals used in food manufacturing, food supplements, and pharmaceuticals. Spirulina's enrichment with inherent biologically active substances makes it a potential supplier of natural products for dietary and pharmaceutical applications. Spirulina is also a prospective component of both terrestrial and space-based life support systems. Here, we review current breakthroughs in spirulina research and clarify fallacies that can be found in both professional literature and public media.

Abstract
Genetically engineered cyanobacterial strains that have improved growth rate, biomass productivity, and metabolite productivity could be a better option for sustainable bio-metabolite production. The global demand for biobased metabolites with nutraceuticals and health benefits has increased due to their safety and plausible therapeutic and nutritional utility. Cyanobacteria are solar-powered green cellular factories that can be genetically tuned to produce metabolites with nutraceutical and pharmaceutical benefits. The present review discusses biotechnological endeavors for producing bioprospective compounds from genetically engineered cyanobacteria and discusses the challenges and troubleshooting faced during metabolite production. This review explores the cyanobacterial versatility, the use of engineered strains, and the techno-economic challenges associated with scaling up metabolite production from cyanobacteria. Challenges to produce cyanobacterial bioactive compounds with remarkable nutraceutical values have been discussed. Additionally, this review also summarises the challenges and future prospects of metabolite production from genetically engineered cyanobacteria as a sustainable approach.

Abstract
Bioactive compounds derived from microalgae have garnered considerable attention as valuable resources for drugs, functional foods, and cosmetics. Among these compounds, photosynthetic pigments and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have gained increasing interest due to their numerous beneficial properties, including anti-oxidant, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor effects. Several microalgae species have been identified as rich sources of bioactive compounds, including the Chlorophyceae Dunaliella and Haematococcus, the Bacillariophyta Phaeodactylum and Nitzschia, and the dinoflagellate Crypthecodinium cohnii. However, most of the reported microalgae species primarily grow through autotrophic mechanisms, resulting in low yields and high production costs of bioactive compounds. Consequently, the utilization of heterotrophic microalgae, such as Chromochloris zofingiensis and Nitzschia laevis, has shown significant advantages in the production of astaxanthin and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), respectively. These heterotrophic microalgae exhibit superior capabilities in synthesizing target compounds. This comprehensive review provides a thorough examination of the heterotrophic production of bioactive compounds by microalgae. It covers key aspects, including the metabolic pathways involved, the impact of cultivation conditions, and the practical applications of these compounds. The review discusses how heterotrophic cultivation strategies can be optimized to enhance bioactive compound yields, shedding light on the potential of microalgae as a valuable resource for high-value product development.

Abstract
Derived from bountiful marine organisms (predominantly algae, fauna, and microorganisms), marine polysaccharides and marine oligosaccharides are intricate macromolecules that play a significant role in the growth and development of marine life. Recently, considerable attention has been paid to marine polysaccharides and marine oligosaccharides as auspicious natural products due to their promising biological attributes. Herein, we provide an overview of recent advances in the miscellaneous biological activities of marine polysaccharides and marine oligosaccharides that encompasses their anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, anti-diabetes mellitus, and anticoagulant properties. Furthermore, we furnish a concise summary of the underlying mechanisms governing the behavior of these biological macromolecules. We hope that this review inspires research on marine polysaccharides and marine oligosaccharides in medicinal applications while offering fresh perspectives on their broader facets.

Abstract
Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) contains bioactive metabolites and has been used to treat various ailments, including cancer. Similarly, marine microalgae are considered a sustainable food supplement with anticancer and antioxidant properties. This study investigated the cytotoxicity of different extracts prepared from I. obliquus and microalgae using cultured human and canine cancer cell lines (MCF-7, HepG2, HOS, D-17, and DH-82). MTS cell viability assay was used to study the cytotoxicity of I. obliquus and microalgae extracts, and a synergy matrix effect was used to study the combined effect of the extracts. Isobologram analysis and the highest single agent synergy model were applied to study and validate the synergy between the extracts from I. obliquus and microalgae. Ethanol-based extraction and supercritical water extract significantly inhibited the growth of various mammalian cancer cells compared to aqueous extracts. Osteosarcoma cells were more susceptible to the supercritical extracts of I. obliquus and chlorophyll-free and sugar-free ethanol extracts of microalgae. A combination of ethanol-based I. obliquus extract and chlorophyll-free microalgae extract resulted in a synergistic interaction with various tested cancer cells. This study provides experimental evidence supporting the potential therapeutic application of I. obliquus and microalgae extracts with a synergistic effect to inhibit the growth of various mammalian cancer cells. Additional in vivo studies are required to fully explore possible therapeutic applications of these unique mixtures to be used in treating cancers.

Abstract
Microalgae are emerging as a promising source for augmenting the supply of essential products to meet global demands in an environmentally sustainable manner. Despite the potential benefits of microalgae in industry, the high energy consumption for harvesting remains a significant obstacle. This review offers a comprehensive overview of microalgae harvesting technologies and their industrial applications, with particular emphasis on the latest advances in flocculation techniques. These cutting-edge methods have been applied to biodiesel production, food and nutraceutical processing, and wastewater treatment. Large-scale harvesting is still severely impeded by the high cost despite progress has been made in laboratory studies. In the future, cost-effective microalgal harvesting will rely on efficient resource utilization, including the use of waste materials and the reuse of media and flocculants. Additionally, precise regulation of biological metabolism will be necessary to overcome algal species-related limitations through the development of extracellular polymeric substance-induced flocculation technology.

Abstract
In recent years, algal-derived glycans and oligosaccharides have become increasingly important in health applications due to higher bioactivities than plant-derived oligosaccharides. The marine organisms have complex, and highly branched glycans and more reactive groups to elicit greater bioactivities. However, complex and large molecules have limited use in broad commercial applications due to dissolution limitations. In comparison to these, oligosaccharides show better solubility and retain their bioactivities, hence, offering better applications opportunity. Accordingly, efforts are being made to develop a cost-effective method for enzymatic extraction of oligosaccharides from algal polysaccharides and algal biomass. Yet detailed structural characterization of algal-derived glycans is required to produce and characterize the potential biomolecules for improved bioactivity and commercial applications. Some macroalgae and microalgae are being evaluated as in vivo biofactories for efficient clinical trials, which could be very helpful in understanding the therapeutic responses. This review discusses the recent advancements in the production of oligosaccharides from microalgae. It also discusses the bottlenecks of the oligosaccharides research, technological limitations, and probable solutions to these problems. Furthermore, it presents the emerging bioactivities of algal oligosaccharides and their promising potential for possible biotherapeutic application.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia due to impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance, or both. Oxidative stress and chronic low-grade inflammation play crucial roles in the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus. There has been a growing interest in applying natural products to improve metabolic derangements without the side effects of anti-diabetic drugs. Microalgae biomass or extract and their bioactive compounds have been applied as nutraceuticals or additives in food products and health supplements. Several studies have demonstrated the therapeutic effects of microalgae and their bioactive compounds in improving insulin sensitivity attributed to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pancreatic β-cell protective properties. However, a review summarizing the progression in this topic is lacking despite the increasing number of studies reporting their anti-diabetic potential. In this review, we gathered the findings from in vitro, in vivo, and human studies to discuss the effects of microalgae and their bioactive compounds on diabetes mellitus and the mechanisms involved. Additionally, we discuss the limitations and future perspectives of developing microalgae-based compounds as a health supplement for diabetes mellitus. In conclusion, microalgae-based supplementation has the potential to improve diabetes mellitus and be applied in more clinical studies in the future.

Abstract
Microalgae are widely recognized as a promising bioresource for producing renewable fuels and chemicals. Microalgal biorefinery has tremendous potential for incorporation into circular bioeconomy, including sustainability, cascading use, and waste reduction. In this study, genetic engineering was used to enhance the growth, lipid and lutein productivity of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii including strains of CC400, PY9, pCHS, and PG. Notably, CRISPRi mediated on phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC1) gene to down-regulate the branch pathway from glycolysis to partitioning more carbon flux to lipid was explored under meso-thermophilic condition. The best chassis PGi, which has overexpressed chaperone GroELS and applied CRISPRi resulting in the highest biomass of 2.56 g/L and also boosted the lipids and lutein with 893 and 23.5 mg/L, respectively at 35 °C. Finally, all strains with CRISPRi exhibited higher transcriptional levels of the crucial genes from photosynthesis, starch, lipid and lutein metabolism, thus reaching a CO2 assimilation of 1.087 g-CO2/g-DCW in mixotrophic condition.

Abstract
Over the years, microalgae have been a source of useful compounds mainly used as food and dietary supplements. Recently, microalgae have been used as a source of metabolites that can participate in the synthesis of several nanoparticles through inexpensive and environmentally friendly routes alternative to chemical synthesis. Notably, the occurrence of global health threats focused attention on the microalgae application in the medicinal field. In this review, we report the influence of secondary metabolites from marine and freshwater microalgae and cyanobacteria on the synthesis of nanoparticles that were applied as therapeutics. In addition, the use of isolated compounds on the surface of nanoparticles to combat diseases has also been addressed. Although studies have proven the beneficial effect of high-value bioproducts on microalgae and their potential in medicine, there is still room for understanding their exact role in the human body and translating lab-based research into clinical trials.
