Abstract
This study investigated the effects of different aeration intensities on organic matter (OM) degradation, greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) as well as humification during plant residue composting. Three intermittent aeration intensities of 0.084 (Tlow), 0.19 (Tmedium) and 0.34 (Thigh) L min-1kg-1 DM with 30 min on/30 min off were conducted on a lab-scale composting experiment. Results showed that OM mineralization in Thigh was more evident than Tlow and Tmedium, resulting in the highest humic acid content. Humic acid content in Tmedium and Thigh was 15.7% and 18.5% higher than that in Tlow. The average O2 concentration was 4.9%, 9.5% and 13.6% for Tlow, Tmedium and Thigh. Compared with Tmedium and Thigh, Tlow reduced CO2 and N2O emissions by 18.3%-39.6% and 72.4%-63.9%, but the CH4 emission was highest in Tlow. But the total GHG emission was the lowest in Thigh. Linear Discriminant Analysis Effect Size analysis showed that the core bacteria within Tlow mainly belonged to Anaerolineaceae, which was significantly negatively correlated to the emission of CH4. Thermostaphylospora, Unclassified_Vicinamibacteraceae and Sulfurifustis were identified as core bacteria in Tmedium and Thigh, and these genus were significantly postively correlated to CO2 and N2O emissions. Redundancy analysis showed that total orgnic carbon, O2 and electrical conductivity were the key factors affecting the evolution of bacterial community.

Abstract
Fungi play a crucial role in straw composting due to the synergistic degradation effects of their secreted lignocellulose hydrolases. An efficient straw-composting system relies on thermophilic fungi and their lignocellulose hydrolases. Thermomyces lanuginosus, a typical thermophilic fungus in compost, lacks cellulase genes. A versatile Thermomyces strain capable of degrading cellulose, T. lanuginosus M85, which grows at 67 °C, was developed and transformed using the AgCMCase of Aspergillus glaucus. The R6 transformant exhibited high-level expression of the AgCMCase. Significant quantities of active cellulase produced by R6 were detected in the cellulose fermentation broth, peaking within 6-8 days. Compost analysis indicated that R6 increased the internal compost temperatures and prolonged high-temperature durations. Correspondingly, more reducing sugars and humus were released, which could promote plants growth. In summary, a cellulase-producing strain of T. lanuginosus capable of efficiently converting straws into organic fertilizers was engineered. This innovation holds considerable promise for sustainable and circular agricultural practices.

Abstract
Excavating nitrogen-fixing bacteria with high-temperature tolerance is essential for the efficient composting of animal dung. In this study, two strains of thermophilic nitrogen-fixing bacteria, NF1 (Bacillus subtilis) and NF2 (Azotobacter chroococcum), were added to cow dung compost both individually (NF1, NF2) and mixed together (NF3; mixing NF1 and NF2 at a ratio of 1:1). The results showed that NF1, NF2, and NF3 inoculants increased the total Kjeldahl nitrogen level by 38.43%-55.35%, prolonged the thermophilic period by 1-13 d, increased the seed germination index by 17.81%, and the emissions of NH3 and N2O were reduced by 25.11% and 42.75%, respectively. Microbial analysis showed that Firmicutes were the predominant bacteria at the thermophilic stage, whereas Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the predominant bacteria at the mature stage. These results confirmed that the addition of the isolated strains to cow dung composting improved the bacterial community structure and benefited nitrogen retention.

Abstract
The resource-based treatment of Chinese cabbage waste by anaerobic fermentation can effectively mitigate air, soil, and groundwater pollution. However, the compatibility between fermentative microorganisms and the environment might be a crucial limiting factor for the resource recycling of Chinese cabbage waste. Therefore, the gain effect of microbial consortia (JMRS, JMRST, JMRSZ, JCCW, JCCWT and JCCWZ) induced by adaptive domestication for efficient conversion of Chinese cabbage waste by anaerobic fermentation were explored in this study. A total of 42 single subsamples with same weights were randomly divided into seven treatments: sterile deionized water (Control); anaerobic fermentation inoculated with JMRS (MRS); anaerobic fermentation inoculated with JMRST (MRST); anaerobic fermentation inoculated with JMRSZ (MRSZ); anaerobic fermentation inoculated with JCCW (CCW); anaerobic fermentation inoculated with JCCWT (CCWT); anaerobic fermentation inoculated with JCCWZ (CCWZ) and samples were taken on days 30 and 60 after anaerobic fermentation. The results exhibited that all the treatments contributed to high levels of lactic acid (178.77-201.79 g/kg dry matter) and low levels of ammonia-N (12.99-21.03 g/kg total nitrogen). Meanwhile, MRSZ enhanced (p < 0.05) acetic acid levels (1.53 g/kg dry matter) and resulted in the lowest yeast counts. Microbiologically, the addition of microbial consortia decreased the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) scores of Massilia and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Moreover, MRSZ enriched (p < 0.05) Lactobacillus hilgardii, and decreased (p < 0.05) the abundance of bacteria containing mobile elements and potentially pathogenic bacteria. In conclusion, JMRSZ improved the efficient conversion of Chinese cabbage waste for resource utilization.

Abstract
This study aims to evaluate whether different doses of Bacillus-based inoculum inoculated in chicken manure and sawdust composting will provide distinct effects on the co-regulation of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), nutrient conversions and microbial topological structures. Results indicate that the Bacillus-based inoculum inhibits NH3 emissions mainly by regulating bacterial communities, while promotes H2S emissions by regulating both bacterial and fungal communities. The inoculum only has a little effect on total organic carbon (TOC) and inhibits total sulfur (TS) and total phosphorus (TP) accumulations. Low dose inoculation inhibits total potassium (TK) accumulation, while high dose inoculation promotes TK accumulation and the opposite is true for total nitrogen (TN). The inoculation slightly affects the bacterial compositions, significantly alters the fungal compositions and increases the microbial cooperation, thus influencing the compost substances transformations. The microbial communities promote ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), TN, available phosphorus (AP), total potassium (TK) and TS, but inhibit nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), TP and TK. Additionally, the bacterial communities promote, while the fungal communities inhibit the nitrite nitrogen (NO2--N) production. The core bacterial and fungal genera regulate NH3 and H2S emissions through the secretions of metabolic enzymes and the promoting or inhibiting effects on NH3 and H2S emissions are always opposite. Hence, Bacillus-based inoculum cannot regulate the NH3 and H2S emissions simultaneously.

Abstract
Vegetable waste (VW) is a potential organic fertilizer resource. As an important way to utilize vegetable wastes, aerobic composting of VW generally has the problems of long fermentation cycle and incomplete decomposition of materials. In this study, 0.3-1.2% of potassium persulfate (KPS) was added to promote the maturity of compost. The results showed that the addition of KPS promoted the degradation of materials, accelerated the temperature rise of compost. KPS also promoted the formation of humic substances (HS). Compared with the control, HS contents of treatments with KPS addition increased by 7.81 ~ 17.52%. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis reveal the mechanism of KPS affecting the composting process: KPS stimulated the degradation of various organic substances such as lignin at high temperature stage, and the degradation of lignin could accelerate the release and decomposition of other components; KPS made the structure of the material looser, with more voids and pores, and more specific surface area of the material, which was more suitable for microbial degradation activities. Therefore, the addition of KPS can promote the decomposition of organic matter in the early stage of composting, accelerate the process of thermophilic phase, and shorten the composting process and improve product maturity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Beet filter cake (BFC) is a by-product of sugar beet processing, which is difficult to dispose of and involves severe environmental concerns. Spirulina platensis is a microalga with a high protein content essential for human and animal nutrition. The present study aimed to utilize the beet filter cake extract (BFCE) to produce Spirulina platensis commercially. However, the cultivation of S. platensis on BFCE to produce economically single-cell protein has not been reported previously. RESULTS The batch experiment revealed the maximum dry weight at Zarrouk's medium (0.4 g/L) followed by 0.34 g/L in the treatment of 75% BFCE. The highest protein content was 50% in Zarrouk's medium, followed by 46.5% in 25% BFCE. However, adding a higher concentration of 100% BFCE led to a protein content of 31.1%. In the adaption experiment, S platensis showed an increase in dry cell weight and protein content from 25 to 75% BFCE (0.69 g/L to 1.12 g/L and 47.0% to 52.54%, respectively) with an insignificant variation compared to Zarrouk's medium (p ≤ 0.05), indicating that S. platensis can be economically produced when cultivated on 75% BFCE The predicated parameters from response surface methodology were NaNO3 (2.5 g/L), NaHCO3 (0.67 g/L), BFCE (33%) and pH = 8, which resulted in biomass yield and protein content (0.56 g/L and 52.5%, respectively) closer to that achieved using the standard Zarrouk's medium (0.6 g/L and 55.11%). Moreover, the total essential amino acid content was slightly higher in the optimized medium (38.73%) than SZM (36.98%). CONCLUSIONS Therefore, BFCE supplemented medium could be used as a novel low-cost alternative growth medium for producing a single-cell protein with acceptable quantity and quality compared to the standard Zarrouk's medium.
