Abstract
Microcystis aeruginosa is considered a harmful cyanobacterial species due to its ability to produce microcystins (MCs) and its increasing prevalence in estuarine environments. While previous studies have demonstrated the effects of individual environmental factors on either growth or toxin content of M. aeruginosa, potential interactive effects and resulting changes in its toxicity remain unclear. In this study, we first conducted an orthogonally designed growth experiment to assess potential effects of changes in temperature, salinity, pH, and nutrient conditions. Subsequently, we performed a full-factorial growth experiment focusing on temperature and salinity as key variables. Intracellular and extracellular MCs content, as well as phycocyanin levels, were measured during both exponential and stationary growth phases. Toxicity was further evaluated based on mortality and swimming behavior of the epibenthic copepod Nitokra spinipes and the planktonic copepod Acartia tonsa. Results showed that both growth rate and MCs content significantly increased with temperature (from 15 to 28 °C) but decreased with higher salinity (from 8 to 16 ppt). Moreover, cell density was significantly correlated with both intracellular and extracellular MCs contents. A significant interaction between temperature and salinity was observed. No correlation was found between intracellular MCs and phycocyanin contents. Finally, exposure to M. aeruginosa resulted in decreased swimming speed, increased inactivity, and higher mortality in A. tonsa, compared to the non-toxic Rhodomonas salina. Our study highlights the consequences of temperature and salinity on M. aeruginosa growth and toxin production, offering increased insights into the potential ecotoxicological risks of future blooms.

Abstract
Large-scale cultivation of cyanobacteria is often limited by the high cost of synthetic culture medium and the environmental impact of nutrient consumption. Cheese whey, a major agro-industrial waste product, is rich in organic and inorganic nutrients, making it a promising low-cost alternative for microbial growth while addressing waste bioremediation. This study investigates the growth performance and the biochemical composition of four different cyanobacterial species (Phormidium sp., Synechocystis sp., Chlorogloeopsis fritschii, and Arthrospira platensis), cultivated in cheese whey (CW). Pretreated CW was used at 20% and 100% v/v concentrations. All species grew satisfactorily in both concentrations, reaching biomass above 4 g L-1 (in 100% v/v CW) and 2 g L-1 (in 20% v/v CW). The highest μmax value (0.28 ± 0.02 d-1) was presented by Synechocystis sp. grown in 20% CW. Waste bioremediation of both 20 and 100% v/v CW demonstrated effective nutrient removal, with COD removal exceeding 50% for most species, while total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removals reached up to 33% and 32%, respectively. Biochemical composition analysis revealed high carbohydrate and protein content, while lipid content remained below 15% in all cases. Interestingly, C. fritschii accumulated 11% w/w polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) during the last day of cultivation in 20% v/v CW. These findings highlight the potential of C. fritschii as a valuable candidate for integration into bioprocesses aimed at sustainable bioplastic production. Its ability to synthesize PHAs from agro-industrial waste not only enhances the economic viability of the process but also aligns with circular economy principles. This study is a primary step towards establishing a biorefinery concept for the cultivation of cyanobacterial species in cheese whey-based wastewater streams.

Abstract
Biogas generated from anaerobic digestion can be upgraded to biomethane by photosynthetic biogas upgrading, using CO2 as a bioresource for algal (cyanobacteria and microalgae) cultivation. This allows the upgrading technology to offer economic and environmental benefits to conventional physiochemical upgrading techniques (which can be energy-intensive and costly) by co-generating biomethane with high-value biomass. However, a critical challenge in implementing this technology in temperate oceanic climatic conditions (as found in Japan, and the northwest coasts of Europe and of North America, with average temperatures ranging between 5 and 20 °C) is the selection of algal strains that must be capable of sustained growth under lower ambient temperatures. Accordingly, this paper investigated the selection of algae that met seven key criteria: optimal growth at high pH (9-11); at alkalinity of 1.5-2.5 g inorganic carbon per litre; operation at low temperature (5-20 °C); tolerance to high CO2 concentrations (above 20 %); capability for mixotrophic cultivation; ability to accumulate high-value metabolites such as photosynthetic pigments and bioactive fatty acids; and ease of harvesting. Of the twenty-six algal species assessed and ranked using a Pugh Matrix, Anabaena sp. and Phormidium sp. were assessed as the most favourable species, followed by Oscillatoria sp., Spirulina subsalsa, and Leptolyngbya sp. Adaptive laboratory evolution together with manipulation of abiotic factors could be effectively utilised to increase the efficiency and economic feasibility of the use of the selected strain in a photosynthetic biogas upgrading system, through improvement of growth and yield of high-value compounds.

Abstract
The biocompatibility and degradability of poly hydroxybutyrate (PHB) make it an important material for food packaging. Poly hydroxybutyrate (PHB) is less flexible than typical polymers and more brittle due to its strong crystalline structure and low melting temperature. Furthermore, while poly hydroxybutyrate (PHB) does not have antibiotic capabilities, the inclusion of additional materials such as phycocyanin can boost its antibiotic and antifungal effects. This research focuses on increasing the yield of phycocyanin from the microalgae Spirulina and selecting an optimal green extraction method, and on the other hand, on the synthesis of biodegradable polymers derived from poly hydroxybutyrate in combination with phycocyanin for food packaging applications. This study shows that higher wavelengths of light, an optimal temperature of about 33 degrees Celsius, pH adjustments using changing the composition of the culture medium by increasing metal compounds and using non-invasive, green and inexpensive extraction methods significantly increase biomass production and phycocyanin yield, which in previous research only one to two of the above parameters were considered for protein extraction, which this study has addressed more comprehensively. Also, the synthesis of biodegradable polymers with special properties for packaging applications, including green polymer poly hydroxybutyrate, phycocyanin and beeswax, which has not been done in previous research on modifying the properties of poly hydroxybutyrate using these two research materials, so that with 60% phycocyanin in combination with poly hydroxybutyrate, they show promising properties for food packaging applications. By examining the physical and chemical properties, thermal strength and degradability of the polymer compared to pure poly hydroxybutyrate, it shows further improvement in addition to antibiotic and antifungal properties.

Abstract
Arthrospira platensis (spirulina) is pivotal to the global microalgae industry, valued for its nutritional and bioactive properties. However, its sustainable production is challenged by freshwater scarcity and biological contaminants. This study introduces a salinity-biostimulants strategy to adapt a freshwater spirulina strain, CBD05, to near-seawater salinity (3 %). Exogenous glycine betaine (GB) and nitric oxide (NO), typical salinity enhancers, improved biomass productivity (0.36 g L-1 d-1), C-phycocyanin (C-PC) yield (83 mg L-1 d-1), and the economic output-to-input ratio was significantly enhanced. Metabolomic analysis linked salt tolerance to elevated amino acid accumulation, protein synthesis, and glycolysis, while transcriptional evidence highlighted enhanced carbon fixation and nitrogen assimilation towards C-PC synthesis upon addition of GB and NO. This strategy also demonstrated high resistance to Microcystis aeruginosa, a common contaminant in open systems. It provides a sustainable and cost-effective approach for industry-oriented spirulina production in freshwater-limited regions.

Abstract
This paper aims to review the production, extraction, stability and food application of phycocyanin. Currently, light source modulation and organic solvent cultivation of high biomass phycocyanin is an important research direction. The development of nitrogen oxygen balanced system-assisted culture environments to raise production will become a trend, the green and sustainable characteristics of which compensate for the drawbacks of the former. Microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and ultrasonic cell rupture technologies address the drawbacks of solvent extraction and achieve a significant increase in purity. Biorefining technology may become the trend to achieve the highest purity and efficiency in large-scale production of phycocyanin. For the stability of phycocyanin, the development of complexes is a trend, but it should consider the suitability of the materials complex with them for production as foodstuffs. Phycocyanin is mainly developed as a natural pigment, and the main point is the coloring power and stability of natural pigments.

Abstract
Arthrospira platensis holds promise for biotechnological applications due to its rapid growth and ability to produce valuable bioactive compounds like phycocyanin (PC). This study explores the impact of salinity and brewery wastewater (BWW) on the mixotrophic cultivation of A. platensis. Utilizing BWW as an organic carbon source and seawater (SW) for salt stress, we aim to optimize PC production and biomass composition. Under mixotrophic conditions with 2% BWW and SW, A. platensis showed enhanced biomass productivity, reaching a maximum of 3.70 g L-1 and significant increases in PC concentration. This study also observed changes in biochemical composition, with elevated protein and carbohydrate levels under salt stress that mimics the use of seawater. Mixotrophic cultivation with BWW and SW also influenced the FAME profile, enhancing the content of C16:0 and C18:1 FAMES. The purity (EP of 1.15) and yield (100 mg g-1) of PC were notably higher in mixotrophic cultures, indicating the potential for commercial applications in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. This research underscores the benefits of integrating the use of saline water with waste valorization in microalgae cultivation, promoting sustainability and economic efficiency in biotechnological processes.

Abstract
Microalgae are a source of a wide variety of commodities, including particularly valuable pigments. The typical pigments present in microalgae are the chlorophylls, carotenoids, and phycobiliproteins. However, other types of pigments, of the family of water-soluble polyphenols, usually encountered in terrestrial plants, have been recently reported in microalgae. Among such microalgal polyphenols, many flavonoids have a yellowish hue, and are used as natural textile dyes. Besides being used as natural colorants, for example in the food or cosmetic industry, microalgal pigments also possess many bioactive properties, making them functional as nutraceutical or pharmaceutical agents. Each type of pigment, with its own chemical structure, fulfills particular biological functions. Considering both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, some species within the four most promising microalgae groups (Cyanobacteria, Rhodophyta, Chlorophyta and Heterokontophyta) are distinguished by their high contents of specific added-value pigments. To further enhance microalgae pigment contents during autotrophic cultivation, a review is made of the main related strategies adopted during the last decade, including light adjustments (quantity and quality, and the duration of the photoperiod cycle), and regard to mineral medium characteristics (salinity, nutrients concentrations, presence of inductive chemicals). In contrast to what is usually observed for growth-related pigments, accumulation of non-photosynthetic pigments (polyphenols and secondary carotenoids) requires particularly stressful conditions. Finally, pigment enrichment is also made possible with two new cutting-edge technologies, via the application of metallic nanoparticles or magnetic fields.

Abstract
As food safety continues to gain prominence, phycocyanin (PC) is increasingly favored by consumers as a natural blue pigment, which is extracted from microalgae and serves the dual function of promoting health and providing coloration. Spirulina-derived PC demonstrates exceptional stability within temperature ranges below 45 °C and under pH conditions between 5.5 and 6.0. However, its application is limited in scenarios involving high-temperature processing due to its sensitivity to heat and light. This comprehensive review provides insights into the efficient production of PC from microalgae, covers the metabolic engineering of microalgae to increase PC yields and discusses various strategies for enhancing its stability in food applications. In addition to the most widely used Spirulina, some red algae and Thermosynechococcus can serve as good source of PC. The genetic and metabolic manipulation of microalgae strains has shown promise in increasing PC yield and improving its quality. Delivery systems including nanoparticles, hydrogels, emulsions, and microcapsules offer a promising solution to protect and extend the shelf life of PC in food products, ensuring its vibrant color and health-promoting properties are preserved. This review highlights the importance of metabolic engineering, multi-omics applications, and innovative delivery systems in unlocking the full potential of this natural blue pigment in the realm of food applications, provides a complete overview of the entire process from production to commercialization of PC, including the extraction and purification.

Abstract
Spirulina is a promising feedstock for c-phycocyanin, a blue pigment-protein, commercially incorporated in many food products for its desirable bright blue attributes, exceptional bioavailability, and inherent therapeutic properties. Remarkably, enhancing c-phycocyanin synthesis in Spirulina would facilitate economic viability and sustainability at large-scale production, as the forecasted market value is $ 409.8 million by 2030. Notably, the lighting source plays a key role in enhancing c-phycocyanin in Spirulina, and thus, strategies to filter/concentrate the photons of respective wavelengths, influencing light spectra, are beneficial. Enveloping open raceway ponds and greenhouses by luminescent solar concentrators and light filtering sheets enables solar spectral conversion of the sunlight at desirable wavelengths, emerges as a promising strategy to enhance synthesis of c-phycocyanin in Spirulina. Nevertheless, the conduction of techno-economic assessments and evaluation of scalability at large-scale cultivation of Spirulina are essential for the real-time implementation of lighting strategies.

Abstract
Due to their unique biochemical and spectroscopic properties, both heme and phycocyanobilin are widely applied in the medical and food industries. Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 contains both heme and phycocyanin, and is capable of synthesizing phycocyanin using heme as a precursor. The aim of this study was to uncover viable metabolic targets in the porphyrin pathway from Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 to promote the accumulation of heme and phycocyanin in the recombinant strains of microalgae. A total of 10 genes related to heme synthesis pathway derived from Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 and 12 genes related to endogenous heme synthesis were individually overexpressed in strain PCC 6803. The growth rate and pigment content (heme, phycocyanin, chlorophyll a and carotenoids) of 22 recombinant algal strains were characterized. Quantitative real-time PCR technology was used to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the changes in physiological indicators in the recombinant algal strains. Among the 22 mutant strains, the mutant overexpressing the haemoglobin gene (glbN) of strain PCC 6803 had the highest heme content, which was 2.5 times higher than the wild type; the mutant overexpressing the gene of strain PCC 7942 (hemF) had the highest phycocyanin content, which was 4.57 times higher than the wild type. Overall, the results suggest that genes in the porphyrin pathway could significantly affect the heme and phycocyanin content in strain PCC 6803. Our study provides novel crucial targets for promoting the accumulation of heme and phycocyanin in cyanobacteria.

Abstract
In order to rapidly screen microalgae species as feedstocks for antioxidants, extracts were obtained from 16 microalgae strains (under 11 genera, 7 classes) using two methods: a one-step extraction with ethanol/water and a three-step fractionating procedure using hexane, ethylacetate, and water successively. Measuring the total phenol content (TPC), total carotenoid content (TCC), and antioxidant activity of the extracts, indicating TPC and TCC, played an important role in determining the antioxidant activity of the microalgae. A weighted scoring system was used to evaluate the antioxidant activity, and the scores of microalgal samples from two extraction methods were calculated using the same system. Among the investigated microalgae, Euglena gracilis SCSIO-46781 had the highest antioxidant score, contributing to high TPC and TCC, followed by Arthrospira platensis SCSIO-44012, Nannochloropsis sp. SCSIO-45224, Phaeodactylum tricornutum SCSIO-45120, and Nannochloropsis sp. SCSIO-45006, respectively. Additionally, the above-mentioned five strains are currently being applied in commercial production, indicating this system could be effective not only for screening microalgal antioxidants, but also for screening microalgal species/strains with strong adaptation to environmental stress, which is a critical trait for their commercial cultivation.
